To help boat buyers in their yacht shopping, here’s an in-depth look at 10 used yachts priced under $1 million that are ready for new owners today.

2003 Ferretti Yachts 590 Motoryacht – Pretty Lady – Fort Lauderdale, Florida

The Ferretti Yachts 590 is a flybridge motoryacht penned for entertainment and relaxation. Gilman Yachts has this 2003 Ferretti 590, Pretty Lady , listed with a $499,000 asking price.

Exterior entertainment spaces aboard Pretty lady include a two-person sun pad on the foredeck, two forward-facing transom bench seats in the cockpit and a U-shaped dinette on the flybridge.

Inside, the split-level salon has a lounge area aft with a U-shaped settee to port and a chair to starboard. Staircases flank the salon amidships with the floating staircase to port leading up to the flybridge and the staircase to starboard leading belowdecks. A more formal dining spot, a C-shaped dinette, is forward and up three steps to starboard, directly adjacent to the helm station.

2005 Hinckley Yachts Talaria 40 – Elise – Portland, Maine

“The new [Hinckley] Talaria 40 is neither as sporty as her smaller sibling nor as soft on the senses as her larger sister. She fits nicely between the two, with accommodations that invite owners to spend more than a weekend aboard, even to prepare meals and sleep,” Yachting previously reported. 

Worth Avenue Yachts has Elise , a Hinckley Yachts Talaria 40 that combines classic downeast lines with angling features, listed for sale with a $599,000 price tag. While the yacht was originally delivered in 2005, it was transformed in 2012 after naval architect Mathew Smith, engineers from Volvo Penta and Hank Hinckley replaced the standard jet propulsion system with the latest Volvo Penta IPS pod-drive propulsion system, resulting in a “groundbreaking and first-of-its-kind modification,” according to Worth Avenue Yachts.

The yacht has “enhanced tracking, superior turning ability, and a more efficient midrange cruise compared to traditional jet-powered counterparts,” says the broker, adding, “ Elise goes a step further by offering dynamic positioning, allowing her to hold a specific GPS position at the touch of a button—an invaluable feature not only around docks but also during bridge wait times or while observing an upwind mark rounding in a sailing race.”

With the yacht’s previous owner being an avid fisherman, they added an array of features that enhance the fishing experience, including 27-foot Rupp removable outriggers, rod holders, a baitwell, a slightly modified cockpit, a removable rocket launcher and a livewell.

Belowdecks, owners and guests have access to the day head to port, the V-berth cabin forward and the galley to starboard. The galley is equipped with a Corian countertop, a two-burner Princess electric cooktop, a single-basin polished stainless-steel sink, a Sharp convection microwave oven, an Adler Barbour refrigerator/freezer and a U-Line ice maker.

The interior has two L-shaped settees and a fixed table to port. Twin low-hour (653) 435 hp Volvo Penta IPS600 diesels power the 40-footer.

Grand Banks Yachts built, and is currently selling Defiance , a Grand Banks 46 Eastbay SX, for $829,000. The 2012 Downeast Cruiser features a two-stateroom, two-head layout. It’s powered by twin 600 hp Cummins QSC 8.3 diesels with Zeus pod drives, which give the 46 Eastbay SX a 31-knot top hop.

The interior of the 46-footer has satin-finish teak with a teak-and-holly sole throughout the interior. A U-shaped dinette to port and a sofa to starboard complete the salon’s seating arrangement.

Belowdecks, owners and their guests will find the galley amidships with the en suite master stateroom and its queen berth forward in the bow. Galley appliances include a Princess Gourmet three-burner cooktop, a freezer, two refrigerator drawers, a microwave/convection oven, a stainless-steel sink and provision stowage.

2008 Huckins 60 – Marina – Naples, Florida

“Her reverse transom masks an integral swim platform, which seems a practical compromise to tradition and accounts for her length overall (60 feet, 3 inches). Her styling has been refined: It’s a bit softer and has more curves than Frank Huckins might have liked. Such features were not efficient in wood construction. The open, dance-floor-sized cockpit is a blank canvas for owners to equip to suit their entertainment needs, fishing and more. 

A few steps up from the cockpit is the bridge deck, which has the helm forward and two three-person sofas flanking the lounge space aft. A fixed, high-gloss folding table between them turns the lounge area into a formal dining spot.

Stepping belowdecks, there is a salon and open galley with three hullside windows on either side bathing the space in natural light, creating the sense of interior volume. Galley appliances include:

The most expensive superyacht for sale is H3 . What began as a refit project escalated into a three-year rebuild that completely transformed the 95-metre Indian Empress. Twenty two years after her initial delivery, she was relaunched as the 105.3-metre H3, with virtually nothing left from her original design except the hull (which had also been extended a further 10 metres). This "rebirth" won her international acclaim and a World Superyacht Award . Her amenities are too numerous to mention but some standouts include a large pool with a waterfall feature, a huge spa and wellness area with a hairdresser and nail salon, a gymnasium and a climate-controlled winter garden in the owner's suite.

Lady Lara joined the market in September 2023, marking the first time she had been available for sale since her delivery in 2015. She boasts a range of entertainment amenities, including two swimming pools – the largest of which can be transformed into a dancefloor – and a custom surround sound set-up. The second pool is found on the sundeck with a swim-up bar, with a large daybed and sunlounger also on this level. Accommodation is for a total of 16 guests across eight cabins and the master suite is positioned on a dedicated owner's deck. DAR was delivered in 2018 and won Motor Yacht of the Year "by a good margin" at the World Superyacht Awards the following year. The upper deck sports a fresh water pool with counter current and the yacht also has a gymnasium with floor-to-ceiling windows. A six-person elevator serves all guest decks, with an owner's party of up to 14.

Pelorus was delivered in 2003 as the 11th largest superyacht in the world and easily the largest yacht to be built by Lürssen at the time. She was commissioned by a Saudi businessman who enjoyed a single cruise aboard his new vessel before a new buyer made an offer too good to refuse. Exterior designer Tim Heywood stocked the yacht with a top deck lido featuring two swimming pools, two helicopter pads and a vast sea-level platform that is revealed by opening the transom. The immense task of designing the interior was carried out by Terence Disdale, who opted to use natural materials wherever possible to maintain a "casual" atmosphere to offset the yacht’s imposing frame. Pelorus can welcome 18 guests with room for an additional 46 crew members.

Savannah 's boundary-pushing design landed her the Motor Yacht of the Year Award at the World Superyacht Awards in 2016. She was the first superyacht to receive a completely metallic paint job and was equipped with a first-of-its-kind hybrid power plant, making Savannah one of the first truly "eco-conscious" members of the international fleet – though she's more popularly known for her Nemo Lounge. Another first, the lounge is designed with a semi-submerged sheet of glazing that provides an incredible view beneath the waterline. The glass wall is also fitted with a drop-down screen for impromptu cinema nights.

With rotating seating areas, an interactive, 18-metre-high forest wall and 800 square metres of windows, Luminosity set a new standard for yacht design when she was delivered in 2022. Accommodation is across an impressive 11 cabins, not including the dedicated owner's deck with its own helicopter pad.  Meanwhile, her counter-flow swimming pool is the exterior centrepiece, kitted out with underwater speakers, an adjustable bottom and a custom chandelier inspired by a diamond. An accompanying four-degree plunge pool is decorated with on-theme visual cues such as mirror-backed acrylic "ice-cubes".

Builder : Lürssen Length : 74m Designers : Winch Design

Constructed to Lloyd’s classification, Aurora ' s key figures include an impressive volume of 2,113GT (split across four decks) and a beam of 13.2 metres, while a crew of 22 waits on an owner’s every need. 1920s Art Deco-inspired interiors house up to 16 guests in eight stately cabins. Among these is the private owner’s suite which features wraparound views and access to a private lounge foredeck. She also features an intimate top deck observation lounge with a daybed and a lounge with three bar stools forward, while a gym and Jacuzzi are found aft.

Phoenix 2  takes a page (or two) from Art Deco styling with her cherry velvet flooring and gilded details. The owner commissioned Winch Design to create her intricate cityscape-inspired design concept, including a 5.7-metre phoenix figurehead modelled after the Chrysler building's mounted eagles. Roaring highlights include a sommelier room, multiple swimming pools, a plush cinema room and a custom Steinway for some musical accompaniment at mealtimes. Accommodation is for up to 14 guests in seven cabins, including a full-beam owner's cabin accessible via a glass spiral staircase.

Builder : AKYACHT Length : 85m Designers : Michael Leach Design , Marco Yachts , H2 Yacht Design

After beginning life as a 77-metre explorer 14 years ago, the completion of Victorious was long-awaited. Key features include an indoor pool in the beach club, cocktail lounge, observation saloon and a wine and cigar “clubroom” which features its own fireplace. Accommodation is for 24 guests in 12 cabins, with further quarters for a crew of 22. The owner's suite is located up on the bridge deck and benefits from direct access to the Jacuzzi and sunpads aft. Sunken Superyacht Likely to Cost Insurers at Least $150 Million, Experts Say

Insurers of the Bayesian superyacht that sank this month, killing tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch and six others, could be on the hook for at least $150 million, according to the first estimates by industry experts.

The British-flagged 56-meter-long (184-foot-long) yacht, which the experts estimated cost around $40 million, capsized and went down on Aug. 19 within minutes of being hit by a pre-dawn storm while anchored off northern Sicily.

The superyacht’s hull was insured against physical damage by yacht insurance provider OMAC and a consortium of insurers including Travelers Cos. Inc., Navium Marine, and Convex, Reuters reported last week.

Yacht Insurer OMAC Is Hull Carrier for Yacht Sunk Off Sicily, Sources Say

Its protection and indemnity (P&I) insurance, which typically covers third-party liability claims including for environmental damage, injury and death, was provided by British Marine.

The hull was likely insured for around $40 million, while the P&I cover would be larger, insurance sources said.

“Our understanding is that the cost of the boat was between $40 and $50 million, so the limit of the hull & machinery policy was probably around those values,” said Marcos Alvarez, managing director, global financial institution ratings at Morningstar DBRS.

The P&I policy would likely be “several multiples” of the hull policy, or $200-300 million, Alvarez added, noting it would also likely cover liability payments even if the captain or crew are found to be negligent.

Prosecutors in the town of Termini Imerese, near Palermo, are investigating the captain and two other crew members. An investigation does not imply guilt or mean formal charges will follow. Prosecutors have said the probe would take time and require salvaging the wreck.

Oscar Seikaly, CEO of broker NSI Insurance Group, that provides yacht insurance, estimated the hull value at $40-70 million, but said P&I cover might not total more than $100 million.

P&I insurance would also cover recovery of the Bayesian, said Francesco Dubbioso, country manager for Italy for insurer Alta Signa Europe, who estimated the superyacht’s value at $30 million to $40 million.

Reuters is the first to report the potential insurance costs. OMAC, Travelers and Navium Marine did not immediately respond to Reuters’ for comment. Convex declined to comment.

The Bayesian disaster, which has puzzled experts who said the boat would have been built to withstand a severe storm, adds to recent woes for yacht insurers, who have faced a raft of hurricane losses in the past few years.

Premium rates have risen by four to five times in the past couple of years in parts of the U.S. and the Caribbean, and yacht insurers have cut the amount of cover they provide because of the risks, Seikaly said.

As a result, insurers have increased rates and re-evaluated their guidelines and risk appetite, according to industry experts.

As well as hurricanes, insured losses have mostly stemmed from severe storms, floods, and other weather events in North America, the Caribbean, and Europe, according to a report by broker Marsh.

Seikaly said four clients had last week been ready to buy boats but changed their minds because of the high cost of insurance.

Climate change was also likely to add to yacht insurers’ worries, Seikaly added, as it throws up more unexpected events.

“Whoever thought a storm in the Mediterranean in the month of August is going to sink a ship?”

How Steward CEO Ralph de la Torre used hospital funds as a ‘piggy bank’

Steward Healthcare was once a titan in the healthcare industry. Now, it’s bankrupt — critics might add “morally bankrupt” as well. Hospitals are closing their doors. Workers are uncertain of their future. And, new reporting from the Globe finds, patients’ lives are at risk.

This all happened under CEO Ralph de la Torre’s leadership. Under his watch, Steward Health Care amassed a staggering amount of debt. Report after report has revealed de la Torre’s operational failures and mounting financial losses — all while enriching himself with multimillion-dollar apartments, yachts, luxury vacations and more.

New reporting from the Boston Globe’s Spotlight team is exposing just how dubious the CEO’s financial dealings were.

Spotlight reporter Hanna Krueger joined GBH’s All Things Considered host Arun Rath to detail how mismanagement at the top led to the company’s downfall. What follows is a lightly edited transcript.

Arun Rath: Your reporting starts with just one example of how de la Torre used Steward funds for his own benefit. In this case, it’s about a $10 million donation to a school — which sounds wonderful. But at this point, Steward’s already in financial trouble, and there’s more to that than it sounds. Could you give us some more detail on that context there?

Hanna Krueger: Yeah. So, just to frame this, Steward was in deep financial distress at this point. Of course, that wasn’t terribly transparent to people on the outside, but Steward itself knew that, and the vendors who weren’t being paid knew that.

We have a scene in the story where there’s a financial executive of a vendor sitting in the parking lot outside a hospital emailing Ralph and other executives on the Steward team and just begging for the bill that is outstanding to his company to be paid.

And then, fast forward two months from then — you have Ralph de la Torre standing at a podium at this children’s K-12 prep school just outside Dallas, and he’s parading this $10 million donation in his mother’s name to build a STEM center.

Like you said, that’s great. Philanthropy is great. However, the bankruptcy filing shows that at least $3 million of that donation came from Steward itself, which means this company — which is meant to serve low-income communities and was just in great financial duress — was being used to prop up the personal reputation of its CEO.

[Editor’s note: Steward Health Care declined to comment to GBH News, and declined to comment for the Globe’s story. A personal spokesperson for de la Torre did not respond to the Globe’s requests for comment, and the CEO didn’t respond to the Globe’s messages sent to his personal or company email accounts.]

Rath: The whole sort of narrative of not just this piece but the range of pieces in this investigation, it seems like it starts off with [de la Torre] coming from a good place originally. At what point in the timeline did the financial dealings head south?

Krueger: I mean, yeah, like you said, the Steward model was a titan in the healthc are industry. It presented, potentially, a new frontier. I think we’ve seen now that — at least the way that Steward handled it — is not feasible. It’s not durable. And in many ways, it was corrupt.

I mean, in 2021, I think the company was already reporting over $300 million in losses; in 2022, it was $200 million in losses. And then, obviously, this May, they have now filed a $9 billion bankruptcy suit.

The company just fell downwards. It expanded rapidly in the early 2010s and went across the U.S. and into Malta and Colombia. But, now, it is folding in on itself, and it’s being presented — a bit — as a house of cards. And the one person who seems to [have] been unscathed by all this financial trouble is the CEO.

Rath: You mentioned how vendors knew something was going wrong [because] they weren’t getting paid. There must have been other signs. How did this go unnoticed for so long?

Krueger: I mean, it’s a good question, and I think it’s something that the Spotlight team is focusing on in our future stories, as well. But there should have been — and could have been — more accountability for Steward in any of the states that it operates. [Steward] federally received CARES Act money.

I think it’s just a lesson in how we let for-profit health care systems run unchecked, and now, we are realizing the dire consequences of that. We’ve had reporting that shows patients who have suffered, and one woman who died because a Steward hospital didn’t have the necessary equipment to save her life.

There are millions of dollars in lawsuits against Steward by small-time vendors that just weren’t paid. And, as we also know, we’re slated to lose something like 1,200 jobs in Massachusetts alone. Then, multiply that across the United States, where they have over 30 hospitals in several states.

The consequences are catastrophic, and it is a good question to ask why this was let to happen.

Rath: Talking about questions unanswered — de la Torre is refusing to go before a Senate committee at a hearing next week. What’s your reaction to that and your sense of what consequences there could be for him and for Steward?

Krueger: Yeah. I mean, I wish I could say I’m surprised, but having been in de la Torre’s world for the past few months, this was an outcome that I expected. He’s obstinate and clearly, as the self-dealing shows, has himself at top-of-mind, and it didn’t come as a great surprise that he would fight back against this Congressional subpoena.

I think he knows what they’ll do, which is, in part, point to reporting like ours, and those jets that everybody’s seen, and the boats that everybody has seen — these multimillion-dollar assets that allowed him to live a lavish, luxurious lifestyle while his hospitals crumbled and failed. I think he is avoiding that spotlight because it would not be a good look for him.

What will happen? I guess it depends on how strong the members of the health committee want to be. They could hold him in contempt; I don’t know if they will. They’ve said a lot of words, but it will be up to those senators as to whether or not they’ll take action on this.

Rath: This is a question that you can’t really fairly answer, but I’ll ask it anyway. There are a lot of for-profit health care companies in America. You just have to wonder how many other Steward Health Cares might be out there since this went undiscovered for so long.

Krueger: Yeah. I mean, I think we can learn a lot from what happened with Steward and why what happened with Steward was allowed to happen. It very well might be a phenomenon that infects a lot of for-profit healthcare systems.

I will say that, while private executives do enjoy a considerable amount of latitude in compensation, travel and spending, there were lines that were crossed here — and it could have fallen on the board of directors to keep de la Torre in check. In fact, that’s one of the only entities that could have done it.

But instead, he was left to just treat Steward’s bank accounts as his personal piggy bank. We document one example where he used the Steward money to purchase an €8 million apartment in Madrid — and then also pay for the renovations on the Steward dollar.
