Hi all, I'm in the process of refinishing the brightwork on our Monk 36. As much as possible, I've been removing bits of teak to take home to my shop to do the work. The next bit I want to do is the ladder (a.k.a stairs) to the flybridge. I can see two bungs at the base of the stringers that cover the two screws that hold the base of the stringer to the deck. However, there is no obvious way that the top of the stringers have been attached to either the underside of the flybridge deck or the main cabin aft bulkhead. I have attempted to access the area inside the main cabin where I estimate the fasteners would be, but to completely expose the area would require removing the cabinetry above and around the refrigerator. Something I am not keen to. So, before I dismantle half the interior of the boat, I thought I would ask if anyone knows exactly how the top of the ladder stringers are attached to the boat? Thx, Paul

Can you post some photos of the top and bottom with different angles?

  • May 19, 2023

Hi Comodave, Here are a few photos. As you can see, the base of the stringer is screwed to the deck. But there is no indication how the top of the stringer is secured. I suspect that the tops of the stringers are either fastened from the inside through the bulkhead or flybridge deck, or adhered to the underside of the flybridge deck and the ladder is anchored at the base of the stringers.

Well, it certainly isn’t obvious how it is attached, is it. I might just refinish it in place. The only easy way I can see to remove it would be to use a multi tool to cut through the top and/or the vertical edge. But that would likely do some damage.

Refinish it in place.

Well, if'n it was me, I'd take out the bottom screws & see what happens. It's possible the top has pegs that go into holes you can't see, held in place by the wedge action jammed under there. You're gonna refinish it anyway, all that costs ya is a couple of plugs

Benthic2

Longshot advice: Sometimes a magnet will find fasteners but stainless is iffy and brass is a no-go Sometimes you can use a thin wire like dental floss to slide between the wood and fiberglass. A brief search turned up a dozen year old thread about TF member Birdsong doing some pretty intensive rebuild of his decks.

Thanks for your thoughts. Yeah, I've considered both options, refinish in place or remove the two anchor screws. The problem with removing the anchor screws and hoping that the ladder is just wedged in is that, like many other projects I've started on my boat, there are unanticipated consequences and a messy can of worms may pop open. I think I'll just contend with the gymnastics of refinishing in place. Thx again.

Probably the best approach. It will involve a bit of gymnastics but remember it is a boat…

hmason

My 2 cents is to leave the ladder steps unfinished. If you stain or refinish them with varnish they will be VERY slippery when wet and could well cause a serious accident. After 25 years of GB ownership I've learned to never refinish ladder steps.

Agree on slippery steps. Maybe finish the ladder then put something like SeaDek on the steps for nonskid.

  • May 21, 2023

OK, I was trying to avoid stirring up a hornet's nest. When I say "refinish," I mean paint. I didn't say so at the start because I know that some folks think it is sacrilegious to paint teak, but I am getting tired of maintaining the varnish in high traffic areas. As an experiment, two years ago I painted the bulwark cap. I think it looks good. So much so that many people don't even notice that it is painted, as opposed to being varnished, until I point it out to them. And, I haven't had to look at it since. So, this last winter, I removed and painted the swim platform. I refitted it this spring and painted the transom steps at the same time. I agree that finished surfaces can be slippery, so when I painted the transom step treads, I mixed in an anti-skid additive. I did the same when I painted my dinghy deck about three years ago. It picks up a bit more dirt, but works great. So, I will use the same approach for the flybridge ladder. For those that are curious, I used Epifanes Yacht Enamel #11 and Interlux Intergrip Nonskip Compound.

If it were my boat I would paint it too.

The Flybridge: An Uplifting Experience for Boaters

Introduction:.

Boating enthusiasts seeking an elevated experience on the water often turn to flybridges, a distinctive feature found on many modern boats. This article aims to shed light on flybridges, highlighting their benefits, potential pitfalls, and use cases, while providing a concise guide to help boaters make an informed decision when considering a boat with a flybridge.

What is a Flybridge?

A flybridge is an upper deck located above the main helm station on a boat. It offers an enhanced vantage point, providing commanding views of the surroundings and creating a spacious additional area for relaxation and entertainment. Typically accessed via a staircase or ladder, the flybridge offers a unique perspective, allowing boaters to soak in panoramic views while enjoying the open air.

Ranger Tug 43 CB flybridge view

Benefits of a Flybridge:

  • Superior Visibility: The elevated position of a flybridge provides excellent visibility, enabling captains to navigate with confidence and monitor their surroundings effectively.
  • Enhanced Social Space: The additional deck space on the flybridge allows for increased seating capacity, making it an ideal spot for hosting guests and socializing during a cruise.
  • Privacy and Escape: When anchored or moored, the flybridge can serve as a private retreat away from the main deck, providing tranquility and seclusion.

Considerations and Warnings:

  • Height Restrictions: Boaters should be mindful of height limitations such as low bridges or overhanging structures that may restrict access to certain waterways or marinas.
  • Weather Exposure: While the open-air nature of the flybridge offers a refreshing experience, it also exposes occupants to the elements, requiring suitable protection from sun, wind, and rain.

Use Cases for Most Boaters: Flybridges are particularly well-suited for the following scenarios:

  • Cruising and Sightseeing: Flybridges offer an unparalleled vantage point for enjoying scenic coastal cruises, allowing passengers to take in breathtaking views.
  • Entertaining Guests: The spaciousness and social nature of the flybridge make it a desirable location for hosting gatherings and enjoying quality time with friends and family.
  • Sportfishing: The elevated position enhances visibility for spotting fish, making flybridges popular among sportfishing enthusiasts.

Azimut motor yacht fly 60 showing the front of the flybridge

Instances you should not consider a flybridge:

  • Performance Boaters: For boaters who prioritize speed and maneuverability, a flybridge may not be the best option. The additional weight and height can affect the boat’s center of gravity, potentially impacting its performance.
  • Trailerable Boats: If you frequently transport your boat on a trailer or have limited storage space, a flybridge may pose challenges due to its added height. Trailering and finding suitable storage accommodations might be more cumbersome with a flybridge-equipped boat.
  • Solo Boaters or Small Crews: Operating a flybridge requires going up and down stairs or a ladder, which may not be ideal for solo boaters or those with a small crew. Maneuvering between the main deck and flybridge can be more time-consuming and potentially pose safety concerns when handling the boat alone.
  • Budget Constraints: Flybridge-equipped boats often come with a higher price tag compared to boats without this feature. If budget constraints are a primary concern, opting for a boat without a flybridge may be a more cost-effective choice.
  • Low Bridge Areas: Boaters planning to navigate through waterways with low bridges or other height restrictions should carefully consider whether a flybridge is suitable. The added height of the flybridge may limit access to certain areas, potentially restricting your boating options.

A Short Guide for Considering a Boat with a Flybridge:

  • Determine Your Boating Style: If you enjoy socializing, sightseeing, or fishing, a flybridge may greatly enhance your boating experience.
  • Assess Navigational Needs: Consider the waterways you plan to navigate and ensure that height restrictions will not limit your access.
  • Evaluate Budget and Space Requirements: Flybridge-equipped boats often come at a premium, so carefully assess your budget and the space available for mooring or storage.

In conclusion, flybridges offer a unique and rewarding experience for boat owners and enthusiasts alike. With their superior visibility, expanded social space, and versatility, they elevate the boating experience to new heights. By understanding the benefits, considerations, and appropriate use cases, boaters can confidently decide whether a boat with a flybridge aligns with their needs and preferences.

Fabritec F44: This DIY flybridge is the ultimate home build project

  • Top stories

Most DIY projects are a little rough around the edges, but when Jimmy Callow decided to build himself a new boat only the best would do

I’ve seen a few home-built boats in my time and while I’m in awe of anyone who manages to complete any project of this complexity, if you look closely the end result is often a little rough around the edges. That’s hardly surprising when you look at what goes into building a boat.

It requires so many different skills from designing to plumbing, to woodworking, to electrical and mechanical engineering, that it’s almost impossible for one person to do it all. Even if by some miracle you have the correct skills, you still only get one chance to do it rather than honing your skills over time on a production line.

So when I heard that a chap called Jimmy Callow had built himself a 44ft flybridge boat from scratch, I envisaged some floating caravan with a basic interior knocked up in his back garden. Until I saw the photographs. It not only looked the part with a classy, contemporary exterior but it was powered by a pair of Volvo D6 engines and seemed to have an interior that could have come straight out of a Fairline or Princess . This needed further investigation.

Small beginnings

Fast forward a couple of weeks and I’m sitting with Jimmy on his boat in Bray marina near Windsor. The camera wasn’t lying. In the flesh it really does look like a modern production boat complete with LED lighting, bespoke touch-screen controls and top quality designer fittings.

Recommended videos for you

It even has its own branding with the make and model name proudly emblazoned along the superstructure – Fabritec F44. If it were on display at a boat show you would quite naturally assume it had just rolled off a production line – and not a high-volume, low-price one either. It genuinely is that good. So how did he do it?

The story starts back in 1988 when Jimmy was 19. He and his father took an old rain-filled 18ft cuddy cruiser in part exchange for a kitchen they’d fitted. It was an inauspicious start but it gave Jimmy the boating bug as he pottered around the rivers and waterways of North Kent.

Before long he started yearning for something bigger that he could stay aboard but money was tight and buying even a good secondhand 30-footer was out of reach. Then in 1994 he stumbled across an unfinished Colvic Sunquest 34 flybridge that had been repossessed by the bank.

The engines, steering and electrics had already been fitted but not the interior, and crucially the bank was keen to get shot of it. Sensing an opportunity, Jimmy snapped it up. He had always been good with his hands and running a furniture manufacturing business meant he had access to most of the tools and materials he’d need to design and build his own interior for it.

It took him the best part of two years to complete but the end result was a comfortable family boat that allowed Jimmy, his wife Karen and two young daughters to enjoy as a family. Initially they kept it in Gillingham marina using it as a base from which to explore the Medway and Thames before deciding to move it permanently up river to Bray Marina.

Jimmy’s basis for the new project was a Colvic Sunquest 44. Photo: Alamy

“On the coast we often had to change our plans due to bad weather but on the river we could enjoy a longer season and even if it was too windy to take it out of the marina we could still stay on board and use it as a weekend cottage,” explains Jimmy.

They kept the boat for 19 years but in 2014, with their daughters now in their late teens, the time came to upgrade once again. “Space was tight and the Colvic was getting harder to maintain, if we were going to carry on boating as a family we needed something bigger. It was now or never.”

Buying a brand new 40-footer wasn’t an option but Jimmy was determined to find a replacement with at least two good-sized cabins and all the mod cons they’d need to keep them safe and comfortable for the next 20 years.

diy-flybridge-Fabritec-F44-hull-moudling-credit-jimmy-callow

Zenon Yachts adopted most of Jimmy’s design changes and took care of moulding the bare hull, deck and flybridge ready for transport to Jimmy’s furniture factory

As before he searched the secondhand market for something suitable but soon came to the conclusion that nothing quite fitted the bill for his budget. Most of the flybridges he looked at were designed for sunny climes whereas he wanted something that was just as cosy on a cold winter’s day on the Thames.

That meant powerful heating and air-conditioning systems, a high output generator so that they wouldn’t be reliant on shore power, a domestic sized galley with plenty of storage and a practical but stylish interior that would feel like a true home from home. Once again he came to the conclusion that building his own boat might be the only viable solution to the problem.

Moving on up

“I hunted around for a suitable starting point and came across a company called Zenon Yachts building Colvic Sunquest 44 hulls for the Norwegian market. I knew the model had a good reputation for seakeeping as the hull was designed by John Bennett but certain aspects of the styling looked quite dated. I worked out how it could be modernised and discussed my ideas with Zenon Yachts.

diy-flybridge-Fabritec-F44-windows-fitted-credit-jimmy-callow

From that point on Jimmy took care of the entire fit out, including stainless steel work, glazing, engine installation, plumbing, electrics and fabricating the whole interior

“We agreed to work together to update the design with new portholes, windows and windscreen as well as a new flybridge and folding radar arch. We approached Trend Marine to make the windows, who agreed but only if we bought at least three sets of them. Luckily, Zenon Yachts managed to get two orders for the redesigned boat from Norway and I agreed to buy the third. We templated the existing moulds and made new plugs and tools to fit the revised windows.”

Zenon set to work moulding the new hulls and in 2011 the bare hull and superstructure was delivered to Jimmy’s factory, FabriTec Furniture Ltd, on the back of a lorry where he’d already built a rolling cradle to wheel it inside the workshop. He paid £60,000 for the mouldings but unlike his previous project, the rest of it was completely bare: no engines, no electrics, no sterngear, no plumbing, no interior – just an empty fibreglass shell.

“There were always things that weren’t quite right with our previous boat so I said that if I ever did it again I would build the whole boat from scratch. This was my chance.”

diy-flybridge-Fabritec-F44-hull-reinforcements-credit-jimmy-callow

The structural reinforcements for the hull and lower deck start to take shape

His first challenge was to design and fit a set of stainless guardrails and canopy frames but rather than outsource it to a metal fabricator, he bought some steel-bending equipment and taught himself how to shape the tubes to fit his new designs. “Dad always taught me that if someone else can do it so can you – I’ve grown up with that philosophy so learning a new skill doesn’t faze me.”

He did bring in a specialist welder to ensure the joins were neat and strong but that aside, he drew, shaped, assembled and installed a complete set of handrails for his new boat.

With the stainless steel work complete, Jimmy turned his hand to fitting the Trend Marine windows and portholes. Unlike the aluminium-framed windows of the original Colvic Sunquest 44, these were flush-fitting frameless designs that required Jimmy to learn yet another skill in order to fit and seal them correctly.

diy-flybridge-Fabritec-F44-coachroof-lattice-credit-jimmy-callow

Jimmy built a latticework of frames to support every panel and retain a layer of insulation

Bare necessities

Next on the list were the engines and sterngear. Jimmy was keen to fit Volvos because of the worldwide network of servicing agents and initially looked at fitting a pair of 370hp D6s before settling on the more powerful 435hp variants, which he purchased from Coastal Rides in Dover.

He wanted the simplicity of shafts rather than IPS or sterndrives even though that meant designing and building his own engine bearers and mounts that would precisely align with the shafts and P-brackets. Thankfully his knowledge of CAD (Computer-Aided Design) enabled him to design and triple check all his measurement before committing to anything.

During the course of the build Jimmy reckons he made over 2,500 CAD drawings and spent over 2,500 hours on research and design alone. This, he insists, is the key to both the accuracy and quality of the finished boat, and ultimately saved many more hours and expense than relying on trial and error to get things right.

diy-flybridge-Fabritec-F44-saloon-seating-in-build-credit-jimmy-callow

The saloon seating was designed to conceal the heating and air con units

Sure enough, the engines and shafts slotted neatly into place, allowing Jimmy to move on to the interior fit out. In many ways this was the hardest part to crack not just because it’s the part of the build that it is permanently on show but also because it involved sourcing all the right fittings and materials to ensure it looked the part and stood the test of time.

Before starting work on it, he and Karen went to every boat show they could looking for inspiration and ideas to draw on for their new boat, pulling up carpets, opening drawers and checking for suppliers’ names. At times Karen would stand guard by the cockpit while Jimmy rootled away inside, on other occasions they’d simply explain what they were doing and even ask for advice if the designer or builders were on hand.

Cabin fever

With no internal bulkheads fitted, their first job was to design a layout that suited their needs but also created a strong internal framework to support the hull and superstructure – GRP hulls are inherently flexible without one.

The original 44s had a galley-down layout with two double cabins but Jimmy and Karen decided to bring the galley up into the saloon and use the space below for a third bunk cabin. With the layout agreed, Jimmy designed and built an entire structural framework of supports, deck beams, bulkheads and paneling with additional insulation to keep it warm in winter. “It’s probably a bit overkill,” admits Jimmy. “But I wanted to be certain it was safe.”

Structure completed, he set to work planning and installing the electrical systems needed to power the boat. The building blocks of this were designed and supplied by Energy Solutions using a 10KVA Fischer Panda generator with six domestic batteries and two for the engine starter motors. Once again, Jimmy himself installed all the cabling and switchboards as well as the LED lighting, bow and stern thrusters.

Next on the list was the galley and saloon. “Karen wanted a four-ring induction hob and an oven as well as a full-sized domestic fridge. They are all made by Bosch and fitted by me.”

The dinette seating and helm position take shape inside the saloon

However, it isn’t just the equipment that looks the part, the work surfaces are all Corian while the half-height bulwarks that act as both the entrance to the galley and handholds for guests moving forward are topped with rectangular section grab rails covered with a matt effect soft-touch coating.

“I stole that idea from a Fairline Squadron 42 ,” admits Jimmy. “ I manufactured the railings out of plywood then found the guys who supplied the coating to Fairline and sprayed them with the same stuff.”

The saloon seating, meanwhile, was designed around the Eberspächer air-conditioning system so as to keep it out of view but still easily accessible for maintenance. Hinged bases in the side returns create extra storage and the whole lot was mocked up in cardboard then manufactured in the FabriTec factory before being installed on the boat. Although it uses real wood veneers, they have been overlaid with a melamine finish that won’t fade or wear.

Flying start

The two helm stations were even more complex to make, involving countless hours of design and templating to ensure the Raymarine navigation equipment all fitted as planned and the ergonomics were correct. There’s even a customised touchscreen boat management system complete with FabriTec branding and a virtual profile of the F44 to control the lighting, tanks, power and diagnostics just like you’d find on a modern Princess.

Karen took care of all the colours schemes, carpets and upholstery choices, which were one of the few things outsourced to Quayside & Leisure in Cannock, Staffordshire. Many of these were inspired by what she’d seen at boat shows and the end result looks just as refined.

If this sounds like a lot of work, it was. It took Jimmy four years and as estimated 5,000 man hours of work to complete the build. Every day as soon as the furniture factory closed for the night, Jimmy would stay on to work on his boat late into the evening.

diy-flybridge-Fabritec-F44-galley-credit-hugo-andreae

The galley features top quality domestic spec Bosch appliances

“It nearly cost us our marriage,” admits Jimmy only half jokingly. “There were moments when I wanted to chuck it all in and get back to normal life but we stuck with it and it has delivered tenfold what we put into it.”

Nor was it a cheap undertaking. All in it cost them £220,000 to build even without accounting for the thousands of hours of labour that Jimmy put into it. It’s hard to say what it may be worth now but Jimmy did have it formally valued for insurance purposes back in 2015 at £450,000. More importantly from his point of view is that trying to find a new boat with three cabins and all the spec he wanted would have cost him more like £650,000.

Finally, in 2015 the moment came to launch their new boat. As before they chose Gillingham Marina and waited anxiously for the moment it was lowered into the water and christened Anna Mae after their daughters Ellie Mae and Alix Anna. After a quick check to ensure there were no leaks and two weeks of final commissioning, Jimmy arranged for an approved Volvo agent to accompany him on the formal sea trials needed to validate the engines’ warranty.

diy-flybridge-Fabritec-F44-running-shot-credit-hugo-andreae

Plans include cruises to the Baltic and the Med where its 30-knot speed will come in handy

“After plugging in their computers and asking me to increase the rpm by 500 revs at a time, the boat began to pick up speed. I kept telling them that I needed to slow down as there was a sailing boat close by, but he just told me ‘no keep going, keep going!’ We reached 30 knots flat out and then had to do it all again opening the throttles fully from a standing start to measure the acceleration. We hit 30 knots in 20 seconds. She passed with flying colours.”

Happy ever after

Since that baptism of fire back in 2015, Jimmy and Karen have moved Anna Mae back to the Thames. They spend every other weekend on her over the summer months cruising up to Abingdon or down to the Thames estuary with occasional longer forays along the coast to clear the engines’ throats.

The longer-term goal is to wind down their work commitments gradually and use the time to cruise further afield to Paris, the Baltic and eventually the warmer climes of the Mediterranean. “There is no way we could have afforded a boat like this if we hadn’t built it ourselves,” says Jimmy wistfully. “I still have to pinch myself that it actually belongs to us.”

After four years, 5,000 hours and £220,000, I think they’ve earned the right to call it theirs!

yacht flybridge ladder

I like the speed and layout of convertibles, they fit my style of cruising with a bit of fishing, but I hate going up and down the ladder. So I've looked at a few vessels with the idea of converting the ladder to something easier to get up and down. I understand this will likely hurt the resale value, so I want to do something cheaper and easier than full blown fiberglass stairs that can be reverted to the original style when I sell it in the future. My thought is to basically remove the existing ladder and replace it with something not as steep, bigger rungs and maybe a railing. Finding a good vessel on which this can be done has been more complicated than I thought. I think any design with a ladder facing port/starboard (ex: 2004 Viking 52) as opposed to forward/aft makes it too difficult. If you look only at forward/aft angled ladders, you then have to consider whether the ladder leads to a "hole" in the flybridge or a "notch" cutout. An example of what I mean would be a 2005 54 Hatteras with a hole vs a similar era 60ft Hatteras with a notch. With the hole you might hit your head coming up from the wrong angle. With those parameters in mind, does anyone have any recommendations for a vessel that might be a good fit? I'm mostly looking at 8-15 year old models in the 50-56ft range and am reluctantly starting to think this gets easier at 60ft. Eating into cockpit space does not bother me too much as long as it can be reversed. I've also looked at Tiara 4800's, smaller than I want but I do love the stairs. Mikelsons are nice too, but nothing available on the east coast. Fan of Maritimo, but haven't been able to find a good fit. I really like Hatteras 54 series II vintage vessels, but I think it might be difficult to pull off and have been considering a 60, but it's more boat than I need. Any input is appreciated, thank you.

Personally I wouldn’t pick a Silverton over a Viking or Hatteras because of stairs unless used mostly in sheltered waters. Ladders are a pain. In some cases you can redo them with a better angle and larger wider steps using up minimal space.
The Silverton has a Donald Blount hull design, who also has designed and consulted to Hatteras and Viking. That is a plus. Yes, they are executed differently, but to get built in steps that is your option for the last 8 to 15 years or a Sea Ray Sedan or an Australian option. I grew up with ladders and have no problem with them although I find I am in agreement with the OP and like the for/aft orientation better.

Luhrs convertible's have flybridge stairs. Might be too small for you though. The 41' is actually larger than 41 I think.

Can't suggest boats, although those with built-in stairs -- we have that -- solved our issues. But I've often thought maybe a circular staircase design could be made to replace a straight ladder... and would offer the advantage of being "reversible" if necessary somewhere down the road... -Chris

Flybridge Boats A Complete Guide

Flybridge boats, also known as flybridge yachts stand as a testament to the evolution of luxury boating. Combining functionality with opulence, these vessels offer more than just a boating experience; they are a symbol of maritime innovation and design excellence.

The Evolution of Flybridge Boats

Flybridge boats have their roots in the early 20th century, originating from military-grade vessels. They served as additional control stations over the wheelhouse, providing a strategic vantage point. This design was adopted and refined by luxury yacht builders , who transformed these utilitarian spaces into hubs of comfort and elegance. Modern flybridge yachts are distinguished by their elevated helm, sitting, and lounge areas, which provide panoramic views and a unique connection to the sea. This evolution from practicality to luxury symbolises the yachting industry's growth and the increasing demand for sophisticated maritime experiences.

Design and Aesthetics

The design of flybridge boats is a careful balance between aesthetic appeal and functional excellence. On smaller vessels, flybridges are often fully enclosed, offering protection and comfort in various weather conditions. For larger yachts, the flybridge becomes an expansive open-air lounge, equipped with state-of-the-art navigation systems, plush seating, and bespoke amenities. These spaces are thoughtfully designed to maximise both the usability of the area and the aesthetic appeal, often featuring customizable options to reflect the owner's personal style and preferences.

Unparalleled Features and Benefits

Enhanced Visibility and Control : The primary advantage of a flybridge is the exceptional visibility it provides. Situated at the highest point on the yacht, it offers an unobstructed 360-degree view, essential for navigation and docking. This elevated position allows captains to manoeuvre the yacht with precision, even in challenging conditions.

Social and Leisure Hub : The flybridge serves as a social epicentre on the yacht. It's typically furnished with luxurious seating, entertainment systems, wet bars, and sometimes even features like jacuzzis. This space is designed for relaxation and socialising, offering an unrivalled setting for guests to enjoy the journey together.

Ideal for Sunbathing and Recreation : The flybridge's elevated position is perfect for sunbathing and enjoying the sea breeze. It provides a serene spot for guests to unwind, often equipped with sun loungers and shade options. The design often incorporates elements that facilitate intimate gatherings, making it an ideal space for hosting parties or enjoying peaceful solitude.

Considerations and Trade-Offs

Owning a flybridge comes with its set of considerations:

Accessibility and Space : Accessing the flybridge typically requires climbing stairs or a ladder, which might be challenging for some individuals. This setup can also impact the layout of the main deck, sometimes reducing the available space.

Weather and Stability : Flybridges offer an exceptional experience on clear days, but their elevated position can be less advantageous in rough weather, affecting stability and comfort.

Cost and Maintenance : The addition of a flybridge can increase both the initial investment and the resale value of the yacht. However, it also entails additional costs for maintaining navigation equipment and other controls on both the main and upper helm stations.

Storage and Navigation Limitations : The increased height of the yacht due to the flybridge might limit access to certain waterways and increase storage fees, especially in dry-stack marinas.

Their evolution from practical military use to symbols of luxury and innovation underscores the dynamic nature of the yachting industry and its constant pursuit of excellence.

Any one got a lead/ideas on flybridge ladder treads for replacing the stock teak ones? Mine are shot and need to be replaced during my paint job while the boat is torn apart. She is a '73 45c.

I just went through that exercise since I wanted to replace my worn teak treads. searched all over the net and posted questions on the forums. got nowhere. then I was on ebay thinking I would buy a small sheet of anti skid starboard and cut my own. found a plastic company out of florida that was the seller on ebay. below was his quote: Here is your revised starboard quote 8- 3/4" white starboard anti skid 16 3/4" x 3 3/4" is $9.50 each 1- 3/4" white starboard anti skid 16 1/2" x 5 1/2" is $13.80 9- ad for 1/4" bullnoes on all sides top , bottom, and corners $5.00 each Total of $134.80 Free shipping to any lower 48 states. allen cesany | president yachtwindows.com oakland park, fl | 954.568.2002 I sent him my cc info on a thursday and I received the treads on monday. excellent work! i'm thrilled with the results. I used barrel screws to attach them to the aluminum support tread under each step. looks fantastic. I highly recommend. Tom

I got steps from sams (Steve) seven seasons ago. I got black star board look great. A little work to install but worth it.

madhatter1's Avatar

I have Starboard treads in use since 1996 and although we use the boat a lot thay are as new.
Do you have support under the tread or are they just fastened on the tube? Mine are 16" from inside pipe to pipe and I was thinking that starboard would flex too much.

MagnaBill is offline

I've got 1" thick King Starboard with the non slip pattern. It's great but it DOES flex so my stainless guy is going to put a bar under each one.

Vincentc's Avatar

Sounds like your steps are similar to the steps for my ladder coming up from the swim platform. I used 3/4 x 1" teak and glued 3 pieces together with 2 part epoxy to get the desired width. The center piece length was the distance between the support pipes and the same width as the pipe, 1". The outside pieces were longer to allow for the bolt through the pipe. I believe that teak came from worldpanel.com. Often you can find teak on ebay. With 5 coats of varnish, it looked good. You can sprinkle non skid on the second to last coat.

+ Vessel Walk Through or Overview:

Stepping aboard onto the Swim platform of this 2022 Prestige 590 Fly you immediately feel the transition from land to the open ocean when your feet touch the teak decking. You will immediately notice the vastness of the swim platform area and its conveniently located railing system for easy movement throughout the space.

To port you will find the large teak stairwell ascending to the aft deck/cockpit. This area offers a large aft seating console wrapped around a beautiful high-gloss teak table with folding leaves and polished stainless steel pedestal making alfresco dining a breeze. Teak decking is present throughout this area giving you comfort while barefoot or in your favorite deck shoes. Underneath the aft cockpit seating is the Crew space entry door w/ assisted gas shock leading into the climate controlled single crew berth. This space features a large tinted glass window for natural lighting extending across the beam of the vessel for natural lighting. In addition to the Grey Oak finish your Crew member will have their own private wet head to starboard in the space.

Moving forward of the Cockpit are the Heavy Duty Tinted Glass Sliding doors where you gain access to the Galley . The Aft Galley layout of the Prestige 590 Fly is extremely well thought out and functional while underway at sea. The Galley sports a large stacked refrigerator freezer set up w/ Custom Grey Oak Cabinet face, 3-Burner Glass Cooktop, and Miele Microwave Oven. Countertops are white Corian Stone and the ample Cabinet storage above and below the countertops is finished in Grey Oak Wood. This Galley layout really brings the outside in by always allowing the person in the Galley to be apart of the action.

Stepping up one step into the Salon the panoramic glass windows give you nearly a 360 degree view of your surroundings. There is an abundance of natural lighting and open feel of the Salon provides you with an airy space to enjoy the company of your family or guests aboard. Adding to the openness of the Salon is the large U-shaped sofa to port wrapped around an elegant fold-out Electric High-Lo Table. Across to starboard is a Custom Spit Sofa Arrangement making the entire Salon space a very conversational layout while adding a sliding Glass door for transitioning to the exterior foredeck space of the 590 Prestige.

Forward of the Salon you will find yourself descending down the companionway stairwell to the Forward accommodations of the 590. Directly forward is the VIP Stateroom sporting a Queen-Island style berth with the option to split the berth into a two single sleeper arrangement. The forward VIP has private ensuite access to the starboard guest head. The stateroom is finished in Grey Oak Cabinetry, plush carpeting throughout, and ample hanging locker storage for the extended trips at sea. Natural lighting prevalent due to the large glass Hull-side windows to port and starboard.

Exiting the forward VIP aft and to port is the Second Guest Stateroom featuring a split side-by-side bunk arrangement. The single berths can be combined into a larger sleeping platform via a slide system integrated in the floor. Present is a large Hanging Locker for storage, Hull side tinted glass window for natural lighting, and private entry doorway to the private ensuite head.

Completely Separate and private from the forward Guest Accommodations is the Full-Beam Master Stateroom . Exiting the Port Guest stateroom heading aft up the companionway stairs through the Salon towards the Galley is the private access stairwell to starboard leading down into the Master. This stairwell is positioned directly across from the Galley. This allows the Owner to have the utmost privacy when travelling aboard with family or guests making the Prestige 590 a highly sought after model in the Prestige Yachts lineup. Moving down the stairwell into the Master suite you will immediately notice how voluminous the room is. Full-beam across, it showcases a Large Island style berth w/ custom built-in end tables, and independent reading lamps. The Booth Style seating console to port is an excellent workspace, but doubles into a flip up vanity top with mirror and built-in storage. Large hull-side windows to port and starboard fill the space with natural light. The windows also have custom blackout shades for increased privacy. Plush Elegance carpeting throughout. Forward in the space is the dual entry into the head and walk-in closet space. Walking into the Master Head you can access the walk-in closet through the centerline walk in shower. The shower has doors on each side allowing you to exit into the head area or out the other side of the shower into the walk-in closet. The walk-in closet has a well thought out His/Her sides with custom built-in hanging space and integrated drawer storage. You can also exit the walk-in closet directly into the master stateroom via the Walk-in closet entry door which is forward and to port in the suite.

Exiting the interior of the vessel back out to the aft deck, you will see the large teak steps ascending into the expansive Flybridge of the 590 . The flybridge has several amenities throughout its space including electric grill and sink console, refrigeration, adjustable seating, and large Fiberglass hardtop. The layout is just as conversational as the Salon. There is a large L-shaped seating arrangement to starboard with a very large, finished wood table. Forward of the starboard seating is the expansive sun lounge with integrated lumbar backrests for comfort. Directly to port is the Helm Console that makes operating the 590 a breeze with its great visibility and ergonomic layout of the helm wheel and vessel control systems.

Walking down the flybridge ladder and then forward along the port and starboard walkways to the bow area you will find a massive yet comfortable sun lounge with adjustable seating and a pop-up finished wood table on a polished stainless steel base. The decking throughout the bow area is non-skid and features pop in stainless steel deck fittings for the Mediterranean Shade that breaks the sun off of the sun bed. In the bow you will also find convenient fold down stainless fender holder rings for securing fenders while underway. Forward of the sunbed is the anchor windlass and locker. The anchor locker has a fresh and saltwater washdown connection for convenience. Anchor windlass foot pedal controls are mounted in the foredeck allowing for anchor control at the bow. Wrapping the entire bow area for safety is the Stainless Steel Bow Rail standing at a generous height for easy movement throughout the foredeck.
