The Bahamas, officially the Commonwealth of The Bahamas, is a country consisting of more than 3,000 islands, cays, and islets. It is located in the Atlantic Ocean north of Cuba and Hispaniola (Dominican Republic and Haiti), northwest of the Turks and Caicos Islands, and southeast of the United States (nearest to the state of Florida). Its land area is 13,939 km2 (5,382 sq mi), with a population of 353,658. Its capital is Nassau. Geographically, the Bahamas lie in the same island chain as Cuba, Hispaniola and the Turks and Caicos Islands; the designation of Bahamas refers normally to the Commonwealth and not the geographic chain.
Originally inhabited by the Lucayans, a branch of the Arawakan-speaking Taino people, the Bahamas were the site of Columbus' first landfall in the New World in 1492. Although the Spanish never colonized the Bahamas, they shipped the native Lucayans to slavery in Hispaniola. The islands were mostly deserted from 1513 to 1648, when English colonists from Bermuda settled on the island of Eleuthera.
The Bahamas became a Crown Colony in 1718 when the British clamped down on piracy. After the American War of Independence, thousands of American Loyalists and enslaved Africans moved to the Bahamas and set up a plantation economy. The slave trade was abolished in the British Empire in 1807 and many Africans liberated from slave ships by the Royal Navy were settled in the Bahamas during the 19th century. Slavery itself was abolished in 1834 and the descendants form the majority of the Bahamas's population today.

On larger motor yachts and superyachts, expect to find amenities such as a cinema, swimming pool, hot tub, a spa, gym, beach club, and multiple deck areas for sunbathing, relaxation, and entertaining. Superyachts may also include a helipad and submersibles. The wide range of amenities and voluminous interior spaces of a motor yacht make them a popular choice with families and large groups of friends. For the best choice of motor yacht charters in The Bahamas, contact Northrop & Johnson.

Of course, on a crewed sailing yacht charter, you will also benefit from incredible service levels courtesy of a dedicated and highly professional, and knowledgeable crew. Known as one of the most popular Caribbean destinations with over 700 islands and 2,400 cays, the Bahamas is the perfect tropical vacation spot. The Bahamas are so beautiful that American Astronaut Scott Kelly named the islands “the most beautiful place in space” before sharing photos on Twitter of the Bahamas from space. You can find out what makes the islands so special when you sail across the waters on our Bahamas yacht charters.
The capital city of The Bahamas is Nassau, which has a high-energy type of vibe. The town itself was originally called Charles Town before being burned to the ground and rebuilt in 1684 by the Spanish. Once it was rebuilt, it was called Nassau, and today it is home to 70% of the population of the Bahamas. Although Nassau is magical, what makes the Bahamas incredibly unique is that each of its islands has its personality and attractions with some of the world’s best scuba diving, fishing, sailing, boating, and dining shopping experiences. With Nassau yacht charters, you can get a whole new perspective on the capital city.
Two of those unique experiences include the Exumas and Abacos. The Exumas are a chain of 365 cays spread over 100 miles. Known as paradise, these cays are home to sapphire waters, white-sand beaches, deserted cays, and the famous Big Major Cay, also known as Pig Beach. Admire the natural beauty of the land with a boat charter in the Bahamas. It is probably one of the only places in the world where you can go swimming with wild pigs. Then there is Abacos, another chain of islands for travelers looking to relax and unwind. The islands are a true heaven on earth location for boaters, sailors, snorkelers, divers, and fishermen. Whatever island you choose to spend your time on, our Bahamas catamaran charters are sure to make a lasting impression.
The Bahamas have a tropical climate, which means that travelers can visit them year-round. However, the best time to visit is between November and April. The region’s peak season starts in December, so visiting just before is ideal if you are looking to dodge the crowds. Hurricane season begins in June and lasts through November.
Chartering a boat will give you the ability to try several different activities, including diving, snorkeling, fishing, and one of the most famous activities in the area, swimming with wild pigs. Most of the cruising leaves from Nassau and sails to the Exumas, with attractions like iguana island or swimming with the pigs. If you leave from the Abacos, you can see Hopetown lighthouse.

Bimini yacht charters offer the perfect luxury vacation.
Bimini, situated east of Miami, Florida in the Bahamas, is a true island paradise, perfect for yacht charters. The Gulf Stream, with its warm waters and extensive sea life, flows north of the island providing the opportunity to Bimini yacht charter guests to spot dolphins, marlin, sea turtles, and manta rays.
Bimini consists of North and South Bimini islands. The main settlement of Alice Town, located on North Bimini, has shops, restaurants, and taverns along the main strip known as “The King’s Highway.” Many yacht charters in the Bahamas come to this beautiful location for the big-game fish, but the islands have so much more to offer.

Exotic, unspoiled, and captivating, Bimini offers any yacht charter guests the perfect island retreat for a romantic honeymoon , luxury vacation, or corporate retreat. Pinkish gold sand offsets the cobalt waters of this stunning island paradise, ready-made for a variety of blissful beachside excursions. Swim on secluded beaches, snorkel in a cluster of tropical fish, or simply soak in the rays of the sun while listening to island birdsong.
Calm waters, warm air, and large colonies of dolphins provide the perfect backdrop for spending the day under a summery sky. Or if you’d rather, journey to the local hotspots where the rum flows and island music entertains. Shopping and sunset bars offer the opportunity to take a respite from lounging on your yacht’s deck. But don’t linger too long inside…the pleasures of Bimini are embedded in the tropical landscape of this heavenly escape.
Scuba Diving
Snorkeling and diving yacht charters are popular in Bimini due to the vast array of marine life along the miles of coral reefs. Many shipwrecks in the area offer stunning underwater dive sites. The SS Sapona , for instance, was caught in a hurricane in 1926. It ran aground, leaving the top of the ship above water with the rest submerged. Some of the wood was stripped and used to build the Compleat Angler Hotel and Bar. Other interesting dive sites include “Bimini Road,” purportedly part of Atlantis, and the Gulf Stream drop-off, where the ocean floor drops an amazing 2,000 feet.
The Fountain of Youth
On North Bimini in a saltwater swamp surrounded by mangrove trees is “The Healing Hole,” a mineral-filled freshwater pool that is surrounded by winding underground tunnels. However, it is within the shallow pools of South Bimini that Juan Ponce de León found the fabled Fountain of Youth .
Shark Mounds
These sand dunes are formed in a variety of animal shapes, including the shark. Even though the animals can only been seen while flying over the islands, early maps depict the dune shapes. Controversy about the origin of the Shark Mounds exists still today.
Visit the Hemingway Museum on Your Bimini Yacht Charter
Ernest Hemingway moved to Bimini in 1935 to spend his days fishing and writing. He wrote To Have And Have Not here as well as his unfinished manuscript, In The Stream. The museum, located in the lounge of the Compleat Angler Hotel, features pictures and writings from his two-year stay here.
Explore Bimini Beaches
Of course, yacht charter guests love the beaches of Bimini. These unpolluted, soft, white sandy beaches are of the best in the Bahamas. The blue, clear water caresses the edge of the beach. The breeze is delightful and the sun is a smile in the sky. Remote beaches, such as Bimini Bay, Porgy Bay, and Paradise Point, are favorites of charterers.
Swim with Dolphins
Wild Atlantic Spotted Dolphins were found in the mid-1990s to have taken up residence in the warm salty waters of Bimini. It’s not uncommon for these enchanting creatures to come close during a swim or want to nestle nearby. No dive or snorkel equipment needed.
Big Game Fishing
Big game fishing is legendary in Bimini, home to one of the most historical fishing spots in the Bahamas chain known as Out Islands. Catch a 12-pound bonefish, blue marlin, or otherworldly giant gold and blue yellowfin tuna while on your Bahamian adventure. And don’t be surprised if you find a shark at the end of your fishing line.
Visit Alice Town
A cozy area of beachfront commerce and the center of the tourist trade on North Bimini Island, this tropical town features hotels, bars, and restaurants just a stone’s throw (or seashells) from the ocean. Leisurely stroll through the settlement dating back to 1848 and enjoy mid-day shopping or a refreshing pina colada at a family-owned bar.
There are many exciting activities for the whole family on your Bimini yacht charter. Call our charter specialists today to arrange the escape to paradise!

The global authority in superyachting
The 81.3-metre Oceanco Alfa Nero has finally returned to the charter market. This comes after the yacht was sold in July 2024 , ending the legal wranglings and issues surrounding her following the arrest in 2022.
Alfa Nero will be officially relaunched on the market during the Antigua Charter Yacht Show in December 2024. For the winter season, she will cruise the Caribbean and the Bahamas and be available in the Mediterranean for the summer 2025 season.
Speaking on her return to the market, Alfa Nero’ s central agent, Nicole Terry of Northrop and Johnson, said: “It’s somewhat poetic that Alfa Nero will be relaunched to the global charter market here [in Antigua] as it had become such a part of the island’s skyline. As a broker attending the show over the last couple of years, we all walked past Alfa Nero’s iconic aft pool and that sign. Every broker was “peaking over the fence”, curious about this icon and what had become of her.”
Indeed, the yacht has been sitting in English Harbour for two years. The 81.3-metre was then declared "abandoned" by the government of Antigua and Barbuda. During this time in June 2023, Alfa Nero was sold at auction to former Google CEO Eric Schmidt for $67,000,677 but the sale was not finalised due to legal complications.
Today, however, we see an imminent return to her former glory on the charter market following her sale, which saw the clearing of outstanding debts owed to creditors and the crew since the yacht’s arrival.
The yacht is now in the midst of a refit to return her to her former glory; ready to welcome brokers on board during her official presence at the Antigua Charter Show.
“There will be a quick haul out for an inspection, a new lick of anti-foul and a change of the anodes,” said Terry. “They’re renewing all the machinery, cleaning out all the air-conditioning ducting, professionally cleaning carpets and upholstery, sanding and recaulking the decks, marble polishing, wood polishing, and the laundry and galley machines are being serviced as well as the guest and crew elevators. Of course, full flag and class inspections and surveys are taking place. The yacht is an absolute hive of activity right now.”
Following the charter show, Alfa Nero will be officially available for charter in the Caribbean and The Bahamas, before returning to the Mediterranean for the summer in 2025. Northrop and Johnson also added that Alfa Nero is now taking bookings.
Having taken the industry by storm since her delivery in 2007, Alfa Nero is a welcome return. The yacht for charter famously has a sizeable swimming pool with a built-in current and an "infinity" on the aft end where the water overflows across a large sloping sheet of glass to create a waterfall effect. Her ground-breaking exteriors were penned by Nuvolari Lenard and her interiors are by Alberto Pinto.
Inside, Alfa Nero ’s styling is inspired by both pop art and Art Deco, with vibrant colour schemes, zig-zag woodwork and bold striped flooring creating a dynamic and visually arresting atmosphere.
Now available for charter with Northrop and Johnson , Alfa Nero has a weekly rate starting at $812,500.
