THE HISTORY AND EVOLUTION OF THE BAVARIA SHIPYARD

  • Bavaria Yachts , history of the construction sites

The birth of the Bavaria shipyard

The Bavaria Yachtbau shipyard was founded in 1978 by Winfried Herrmann in Germany. Herrmann was an aeronautical engineer with a passion for sailing. He started building sailing boats for his own use, and then decided to found his own company to produce high quality boats at affordable prices.

The evolution of Bavaria models

Since its foundation, Bavaria Yachtbau has experienced a significant development as a European yacht builder. The first Bavaria models were mainly cruising yachts. Later on, the yard moved into the construction of motor yachts.

Bavaria’s first sailing yacht models were the Bavaria 707, 808 and 909. These yachts, designed for coastal cruising, were a great success in Europe.

Over the years, Bavaria has continued to develop its range of sailing yachts, with models such as the Bavaria 30, 36, 40, 50 and 55 Cruiser. These models are praised for their modern design, their performance at sea and their interior comfort.

In parallel, Bavaria is developing a range of motor yachts, with models such as the Bavaria Sport 29, 35, 43, 46 and 50 , as well as the R-Line range . These motor yachts are also very popular with European yachtsmen, thanks to their performance, style and interior comfort.

The development of Bavaria

Over the years, Bavaria has continued to innovate by using modern construction techniques, such as vacuum construction and epoxy resin, to produce lighter, stronger and faster boats. In addition, Bavaria has developed partnerships with world-renowned designers such as Farr Yacht Design and BMW Group Designworks USA to create innovative and stylish boat designs.

Notably, the latest line of boats is designed by BMW’s subsidiary, Designworks USA. Although the company’s founder, Herrmann, ran the company until 2008, he later sold his shares to a private investor.

In 2010, Bavaria Yachtbau expanded its operations by acquiring the French shipyard Dufour and the Italian shipyard Cantiere del Pardo (manufacturer of the Grand Soleil brand ). However, the Dufour brand was sold in 2013. In 2014, Bavaria Yachtbau continued its expansion strategy by acquiring Nautitech Catamarans.

Bavaria boats, a perfect fusion of comfort, performance and quality

In summary, Bavaria boats range in size from 8.20 meters to 15.90 meters. Today the production of sailing boats represents 60% of the annual production. While motor boats represent 40% of the annual production. Since the creation of the shipyard, 30 000 yachts have been built.

Yachts estranged from any navigable waters sounds perplexing at first. But the answer lies in Bavaria Yachts’ history; because revolution often happens where you least expect it. Bavaria Yachts, located in the small town of Giebelstadt in Würzburg, has not always manufactured yachts. With no navigable waters in sight, Winfried Herrmann’s idea to turn his company for plastic windows into a top-notch shipyard sprung from seeing a grand opportunity for true innovation. In 1978, Herrmann realised his ambitious plan and started to specialise in building yachts. The primary difference to other shipyards? Herrmann’s optimised manufacturing process.

Bavaria Yachts – a brief history

Bavaria Yachts C45

In 1978, Winfried Herrmann began building boats in Giebelstadt a town not far from Frankfurt in Germany. Winfried was a keen sailor and entrepreneur and had recognised the workforce expertise and technology being used in the PVC window factory he ran with his partner Georg Haubner. The window factory was already successful on the site and they wondered if the manufacturing techniques could be transferred to building yachts. And so the story of Bavaria Yachts begins…

GRP had been the established method of boat manufacturer for many years, so taking the knowledge that he had learned with window manufacturer was truly a game-changer for the yacht industry.

Industrial scale yacht production at an unbeatable price

Bavaria Yachts C45

Seizing on the idea that yachts could be built on an industrial scale and offered at an unbeatable price, the first yacht rolled off the production line and so Bavaria Yachts was born.

The new venture was launched at the Interboot Boat Show and two Bavaria yachts were presented to the public. A seven-metre and an eight-metre modern yacht took pride of place on the stand. They both had raised foredecks which meant the yachts had lots of space below deck – befitting of the new company slogan of “better living at sea”.

The two business owners clearly wanted to make their mark within the sector and provided a range of value-added services for new customers. They carried out customer surveys at boat fairs and recognised that new customers also needed a suitable marina berth for their new yachts – so they sourced and supplied those too.

By 1979, a new 5,000 square metre yacht production facility was launched and Axel Monhaupt was appointed as the house-designer. Within a matter of months, five yachts a week were leaving the production line – truly something to rival the traditional yacht making methods of other factories.

Bavaria Yacht Expansion Plans

In the 1980s, the yacht and charter agent Josef Meltl joined Bavaria Yachts and added valuable market expertise that was also instrumental for the successful entry into the charter market that was to follow very soon.

From here things developed at a rapid pace. The Bavaria Yacht design team became well respected in the fast yacht racing space and by 2001 the company had branched out into manufacturing motorboats. Like their sailing yachts they immediately became successful. The production quality and price point were two factors that ensured Bavaria Yachts would continue to be a success.

Within two years the yard had been enlarged to 71,000 square metres and Bavaria Yachts was building over 2,000 boats a year. The team were now using sophisticated manufacturing methods like working with their suppliers to deliver engines already unpacked, and with the gearbox already bolted on. These new supply methods meant there was no need to unpack and assemble the engines at the yard, they were simply lifted straight into the boats and bolted down in place.

Bavaria Multihull Yachts

Bavaria Nautic Open 40

In 2014, Bavaria Yachts also entered the multihull market with the purchase of the French catamaran manufacturer Nautitech. In 2015, the Bavaria Nautitech 46 Open was launched as the first catamaran newly developed under Bavaria Yachts.

Despite incredible growth over 35 years, the business was met with financial difficulty and filed for bankruptcy in April 2018. However, by September of the same year a new investment team was found, and the yard was secured before the shipyard was due to close.

Bavaria Yachts has come a long way since those early models. Today, about 550 employees work in Giebelstadt and produce over 450 sailing yachts and motorboats.

The production ethos of Winfried Herrmann is still very much at the core of the company. Over the years the manufacturing techniques have been refined with things like state-of-the-art vacuum infusion technology and the use of modular interiors.

In 1978, the first yacht of the Bavaria brand came off the stocks at a shipyard in the German city of Gibelshdat. It was the 807. The founder of the company, Winfred Hermann, could not have imagined at the time that in a few years his production would have the most modern facilities to produce a wide range of yachts.

This manufacturer of plastic windows decided to re-equip its factory for the production of inexpensive cruise yachts, and the assembly of models on an on-line conveyor became a feature of the shipyard's work. This made it possible to speed up the production of finished products, divide functions among the working staff, improve quality control at each stage of assembly . Over time, Bavaria became the first company in the yachting world to use robotic technology in the construction of yachts and boats.

Constantly feeling the pulse of the market, this company has been mastering the production of motor boats since 2003 . Today their share in the total number of manufactured products is 40%.

Today BAVARIA-Yachtbau is a shipyard with 200 thousand sq. m. production space . 70 thousand sq.m. were allocated directly for the body molding shops, workshops, carpentry shops and five assembly lines. The model range of the manufacturer includes 40 models of sailing cruising catamarans and planing yachts with a flybridge with a hull length from 9 to 18 meters. The main production facilities with a staff of 600 are located in the German Giebelstadt. In La Rochelle, France, the company employs 250 people to assemble Nautitech catamarans. Every year 2 thousand motor and sailing yachts leave the stocks of this leader of the yachting industry with an excellent combination of price and quality. It is for him that many experts on the yacht and boat market call BAVARIA-Yachtbau a people's brand.

The shipyard's own test center in Markbraith am Main also takes an active part in the technological chain. The work of this division allows you to research, test, modify yachts, bring innovations to their designs. The center's specialists work on each model until the quality inspectors of the shipyard give their approval for its serial launch. In the structure of the center, there is a test pool, in which yachts, before falling into the hands of their owners, are tested for their strength and reliability indicators.

All Bavaria yachts and boats are certified and meet the most stringent quality standards .

Beneteau Vs Bavaria: 5 Differences You Should Know

' src=

While Beneteau has been in the boat-building business much longer than Bavaria Yachts, the two companies build similar boats.

They both produce a range of motor and sailing yachts, and both have acquired or bought a sailing catamaran brand – Beneteau bought Lagoon as part of the Jeanneau group in 1995, and Nautitech Catamarans became part of the Bavaria Yachtbeau Holdings in 2014.

In this article, we shall be comparing the two brands and the five differences you should know:

Table of Contents

history of bavaria yachts

Beneteau Yachts can trace its history as a boat-building company back to 1884, when the company’s founder, Benjamin Beneteau, started a boatyard building wooden sailing fishing trawlers in Croix-de-Vie, France.

His grandchildren, Annette Beneteau Roux and her brother Andre Beneteau, took over the reins in the mid-1960s and introduced the first line of fiberglass fishing boats.

Unbeknown to both Annette and Andre, they had created a new market segment, which would be referred to as the recreational fishing boat. By 1972 the company had moved into modest new premises, and the first semi-industrial production line of fiberglass boats had begun.

By 1976, the company realized that the sailing population was ready for bigger and faster sailing boats with the addition of some interior comforts. The first of the First was introduced at the Paris Boat Show, becoming legendary in its class.

Today Beneteau is considered the largest producer of leisure boats in the world. The company employs more than 7,500 people across the globe, producing more than 10,000 hulls a year, and is still a family-run company.

While Beneteau can trace its boat-building heritage back to 1884, Bavaria is a relatively ‘newcomer’ to the market.

Bavaria Yachts was founded in 1978 in Gibelstadt, Germany, by Winfried Herrmann, a PVC window manufacturer who was also an avid sailor.

He recognized the potential of his factory and his workforce to produce sailing yachts and started a separate division for manufacturing boats within his window business.

By the early 1980s, the window business was in trouble. However, Josef Meltl, a successful yacht broker at the time, recognized the potential in Bavaria Yachts and came in as a 50% partner.

With this new injection of capital, Winfried Herrman could reach his dream.

“To produce industrial yachts in order to offer them at unbeatable bargain prices and to give many customers the opportunity to purchase a new yacht for themselves.”

[Quote courtesy of Bavariayachts.com]

This target of building affordable boats that many could afford helped Bavaria grow at an unprecedented rate. The company expanded from building only sailboats to including motor boats in 2001, and just like the sailboats, they were an immediate success.

By 2006, the company had expanded and employed over 600 people while producing more than 3,500 boats per year. At the height of this success, Herman and Meltl sold Bavaria Yachts to a US investment company, Bains Capital, for an undisclosed amount (rumored to be around 1.3 billion Euros!).

The timing was perfect for the two partners, but a disaster for Bains Capital – the following financial crash of 2008/9 hit the world, and the annual production of Bavaria yachts fell from 3,500 boats to less than 1,000.

Bains Capital sold the company for a huge loss.

After changing ownership several times, today, the company is owned by a small equity company that bought Bavaria in 2018. Bavaria Yachts has approximately 550 employees that work in the original Giebelstadt premises and produce more than 450 sailing yachts and motorboats per year.

While nowhere near being the biggest producer of leisure craft in the world, Bavaria is, however, the largest manufacturer in Germany.

Here are the five differences you should know between Beneteau and Bavarian boats!

2. Construction Methods & Materials

Bavaria and Beneteau claim to use the best materials and components, the latest techniques, and the best craftsmen to build their boats, but the similarities end there.

Beneteau is a well-oiled production line that depends on an intelligent Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) system, which enables them to manage complicated, modern boat-building processes in-house.

This PLM system is combined with Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) tools to ensure the optimization of materials, components, space, and manpower to drastically increase the company’s performance and profitability.

In addition, Beneteau has its own in-house carpentry division where all the interior wooden fixtures and fittings are made. Tables and doors, couches and cupboards, companionway steps, fiddles, and other decorative pieces are manufactured, stained, and polished in this 27,000 m² cabinetmaking workshop, making it the biggest in Europe.

With its more than 130-year history, Beneteau has been a pioneer in implementing new materials and techniques and has its own Research and Development (RD) team dedicated to continuous improvements.

Meanwhile, Bavaria Yachts uses more low-tech, traditional methods for building their boats. While Bavaria is at the forefront of German pleasure boat engineering, they still lay up each hull by hand.

The original factory in Giebelstadt, near Würzburg, has just four production lines, each 125 meters long, plus a carpenter’s workshop where each yacht is constructed. There are two halls to manufacture hulls and decks housed in a large area measuring 200,000 m².

How Reliable Are Beneteau Boats? Find out here!

Each boat is built to order at Bavaria, and no two boats are identical. So, construction slots are allocated depending on the order, and a well-organized team works at each station along the line.

The production line has roughly 30 different stations where different tasks are performed (wiring, plumbing, internal bulkheads, furniture installation, etc.). Each boat takes about 6 – 8 weeks to produce.

While not as automated as Beneteau, the Bavaria factory production line is a well-oiled, modern production style. Short distances between each stage enable quick decisions within the team, and good organization ensures the best efficiency with high cost‐effectiveness.

This enables Bavaria to compete with Beneteau on price, which is all to the customer’s advantage.

3. Sailing Yacht Models

While Beneteau and Bavaria produce very similar style sailing yachts, the main difference is the different model options.

The following is a list of the different new models on offer by each brand today:

Oceanis 30.1 Cruiser 34
Oceanis 34.1 Cruiser 37
Oceanis 38.1 Cruiser 41
Oceanis 40.1 Cruiser 41S
Oceanis 46.1 Cruiser 46

First 44 C57
First 53 Vision 42
First 14 SE Vision 46
First 18 SE Easy 9.7
First 24 SE
First 27 SE
Figaro Beneteau 3

As you can see, both companies concentrate on mid-size cruiser/racer-style sailing boats with very spacious and modern accommodations down below.

However, the difference is that Beneteau does offer entry-level dinghy-style sailboats with their First 14, First 24, and high-performance First 14 SE, First 18 SE, and First 24 SE boats that are perfect for competing in international one-design regattas.

In addition, as Beneteau is at the forefront of innovative design, they are the first to offer a production foiling one-design monohull. The Figaro Beneteau 3 combines modern technology and innovation resulting from a collaboration between Group Beneteau’s top experts and VPLP Design.

This is a major coup for Beneteau as VPLP Design is responsible for some of the world’s most innovative racing boats, including the last two winners of the Vendee Globe.

4. Motor Boat Models

While most people will associate both Beneteau and Bavaria with sailing yachts, both companies build a range of motor boats.

As Beneteau’s beginnings came from sailing fishing boats, it was only natural that they should develop a range of motorized fishing boats, which they did in the early 70s. The first of the Antares range was designed by Andre Beneteau, who had a passion for line fishing.

Bavaria, by contrast, only started manufacturing their first motorboats in 2001, but they were immediately a huge success.

Let’s take a look a the various models each company offers:

As you would expect from a more established company with a long history of producing motor boats, the Beneteau offerings are more extensive in their size range and different models.

5. Warranties

If you decide on a new Beneteau or Bavaria, you might be interested to know about the differences in their limited warranties.

Their website shows Beneteau offers a 7-year structural warranty plus 3-year parts and labor warranty on every new boat. However, you must report any defect to an official Beneteau dealer who will diagnose and validate your claim according to Beneteau’s general warranty terms.

Interestingly, we found no reference to Bavaria’s warranty on their website. However, after further research, we did find a warranty description on one of their dealership’s websites which states:

“Your new boat is covered by a manufacturer’s warranty against all manufacturing defects for 1 year plus a 5-year structural hull guarantee as set out in detail in your HANDOVER NOTES booklet. Please make sure you take the time to read this.”

[Courtesy clippermarine.co.uk]

As with all warranties, it is important to read the small print before finalizing any purchase.

Final Thoughts:

Bavaria and Beneteau do produce very similar boats in the mid-range size, both motor and sail.

However, if you want to buy a Beneteau or a Bavaria, your choice will come down to personal preference on layout, finishing, and performance. Perhaps the difference in warranty will help you decide.

While we have listed the differences, prices are very comparable for both brands. So if you are deciding between two similar boats, make sure sure you compare each boat with the same inventory before deciding.

If you are one of those doubters of production boats, don’t forget that both brands are favored by charter companies worldwide. These companies put many hours on their boats for up to 5 years of service before being sold to the second-hand market.

BAVARIA YACHTS

Bavaria is a German shipyard established in 1978 in the north of Bavaria. It is located south of Würzburg. Bavaria History was made when the administrator sold it for the first time in 2007. Then in 2009, History repeated itself, and Bavaria was sold to Anchorage advisors and Oaktree capital management. In December 2012, the brand expanded and bought the Dufour and Italian Cantiere del Pardo (big sun) ship. Unfortunately, the banking crash saw company values fall significantly. During the last ten years, growth has been steady but nowhere near the levels pre 2010. Production of Bavaria Yachts has been affected by the covid crisis in the same way all manufacturers have.

The sailing yacht from BAVARIA YACHTS

A BAVARIA yacht is the perfect interaction of many elements. Everything is built around the extensive expertise of German engineering. It is an art that looks back on a long and successful tradition in boat building. Today it is possible to implement all this knowledge with a high degree of precision and quality. We make use of the best materials, the best equipment and exquisite craftsmanship to create something that is the essence of every BAVARIA: the joy of yachting.

history of bavaria yachts

The BAVARIA C38 combines perfect sailing characteristics, easy handling and maximum use of the interior space. Distinctive design features, such as the BAVARIA V-bow and Chines at the stern, guarantee safe and fast sailing characteristics and an incredible amount of space below deck.

history of bavaria yachts

The BAVARIA C42 is the logical progression from the BAVARIA C-LINE, but has its own distinct character. A modern, innovative hull shape with chines and a V-shaped bow developed by BAVARIA YACHTS guarantee both the best sailing performance and an unusually large amount of space below decks.

Our aim was to make the BAVARIA C50 nothing less than a new benchmark in the 50-foot sailing yacht category. It offers an elegant, flat hull line and stunningly dynamic silhouette. Everything is clear and minimalist, reflecting our understanding of good, modern yacht design. No other yacht offers so much space, so much comfort and so many possibilities.

history of bavaria yachts

The jury said: “European Yacht of the Year 2015”. We say: that comes as no surprise! That is because you would be hard pressed to find another sailing yacht in its class that offers more space, more comfort, more luxury if you want it, and is also this easy to handle.

Experience the pure joy of yachting.

The fascination of sailing.

We give our very best every day so that you can enjoy the most beautiful moments on the water. Sailing is the epitome of lightness and is synonymous with letting yourself drift. These feelings are at the centre of the design and construction of our exclusive sailing boats and yachts. We spare no effort and regularly put everything to the test so that you can glide across the water without a care in the world.

A sailing yacht with comfort and individuality for every type of sailor

BAVARIA YACHTS is one of the most modern manufacturers of sailing yachts in the world. Our shipyard in Giebelstadt, Franconia, produces exclusive yachts for discerning customers. Around 700 employees produce sailing and motor yachts there every day.

Our portfolio leaves nothing to be desired: The BAVARIA C-LINE and CRUISER LINE sailing yacht series offer the right model for every sailor with customised configuration options. We also offer a wide range of motorboats for the highest demands at sea.

history of bavaria yachts

Solid wood and yet light on board

More than 45 years of experience in boat building go into the woodworking for the construction of our sailing yachts. Although modern machines make it easier for the boat builders to work in our in-house joinery, their judgement and expertise in working with different types of wood remain the most important tools. Mahogany, teak, oak or walnut, our boats offer individuality and a feel-good ambience.

And every sailing yacht contains the perfect balance of solid wood and robust laminates. The weight of the interior fittings also contributes to the solid sea behaviour and excellent sailing characteristics that characterise every sailing boat from our shipyard in Giebelstadt.

Sandwich construction for a long life of the sailing yacht

Isophthalic acid resins in the outer layers, which are used during lamination, ensure the highest quality in the hulls of our boats. They provide effective protection against osmosis and thus ensure the longevity of your sailing boat or motorboat.

The hull and deck of a BAVARIA consist of a sandwich construction with foam inserts. On sailing yachts, they are reinforced with aluminium plates where fittings are mounted. At the "wedding", the deck and hull are screwed and glued together, the most beautiful moment for us as a manufacturer - and the first step towards the finished yacht.

Unrivalled precision for outstanding sailing yacht quality

Mast foot, cleats, blocks, winches, railing supports, cockpit windows, hatches, etc: More than 40 items belong on the deck and in the cockpit of every BAVARIA. An efficient layout is an absolute must. To ensure that every piece of equipment is in the perfect place, we combine the many years of experience of our product managers, designers and boat builders with the precision of modern CAD/CAM software. This enables the exact planning, development and production of prototypes, finished products and smooth production processes. Later, when building the deck, aluminium plates are incorporated into the sandwich construction at key points in order to achieve above-average stability.

Computer-controlled milling machines and drills are used during production exactly where the product team has previously specified - to the millimetre. The millimetre-precise execution of milling and drilling determines the subsequent tightness. In order to be able to carry out this elementary work with consistently high quality, we had our own CNC system developed years ago, which is unrivalled in the yacht and boat building industry to date.
