The Fastest & Biggest Catamaran Ferries

FerryGoGo

Catamaran Ferries are faster than traditional ‘monohull' ferries. These ferries can achieve much higher speeds. In Europe, you have several of these fast catamaran connections that you can take.

Take for instance the ferry on the connection between Hirtshals and Kristiansand:

Fjord FSTR Bron: https://www.fjordline.com/

The Fastest Ferry

The Franciso ferry remains the fastest ferry, built by Incat:

HSC Francisco is a High-Speed Catamaran built by Incat in Hobart, Tasmania. Powered by liquefied natural gas, she is currently the fastest passenger ship in service, reaching a speed of 58 knots (107 km/h; 67 mph). The propulsion is by two GE LM2500 water jets. Connecting Buenos Aires with Montevideo .

ferry en catamaran

A ferry connection is considered fast if more than 40 knots can be achieved. Only ferry catamarans make this. Boats that are often high and therefore have less friction with the water.

All fast Catamaran connections in Europe

Catamaran connections in Scandinavia and the Baltic Sea

  • Aarhus – Odden
  • Rønne – Ystad (2 pieces)
  • Gothenburg (Sweden) – Frederikshavn (Denmark)
  • Gran Canaria – Fuerteventura ( Leonora Christina )
  • Hirtshals (Denmark) and Kristiansand (Norway)
  • Viking FSTR – Helsinki to Tallinn (Very fast!)

Bajamar Express

You also have these ferries in the British Isles, including from Stranraer to Belfast and ferries from England to the Channel Islands. Since these often change locations, it is difficult to pin them to one location or connection.

You also recently have more of these High-Speed ferries available around Greece.

The Largest Catamaran Ferry

HSC-Express

The largest diesel-powered catamaran ferry is the  HSC Express 1 and 2  between Aarhus and Odden (as well as Rønne and Ystad) in Denmark. More information about this catamaran can be found  here on Wikipedia  . The newer variants of this Ferry. For example, the HSC Express 3 is slightly smaller, so it may well be the case that these will remain the fastest and largest catamarans in the world for a very long time.

UPDATE: By the way, the  Express 5  will eventually become the largest.

Sometimes you hear that the Hodor pleasure yacht (  Astilleros Armon  ) is the largest catamaran with 60 meters, but this is incorrect. It is much smaller than the HSC Express at  112.6 meters .

The Bajamar Express is a beauty, love to see more of these catamaran ferries in Europe!

The White Blue ferry is the Iris 6.1 Catamaran Passenger Ferry. I think the project failed:

” The philosophy underpinning the design concept was the need to achieve three important targets. Most importantly, it had to be able to transport passengers in comfort. In order to impose a mimimal environmental impact on ports, estuaries and banks, it had to generate a low wake at all operational speeds. Lastly, it had to meet these standards without negatively influencing the hull form, which was designed to maximise speed and economy.”

The ferry is still active somewhere in Croatia. When you spot it let us know 🙂

2024 Ferry Schedules from Napoli to Capri

All ferry schedules to and from capri. routes and timetables are updated based on information from the ferry and hydrofoil companies. the schedules may vary at any time..

From mid-April to mid-October the hydrofoils to Capri fill up easily and there can be long lines at the departure ports. We recommend booking tickets in advance.

Quick links

Notes Schedules change frequently. The times you find on this page refer to the current week. Double check your departure time a few days before travel. In the event of rough seas, call the ferry company or Capri tourist information office ( +39 081 837 0686 ) to check if there are delays or cancellations before heading to the departure port. You don't have to reserve or purchase a ferry ticket in advance; however, we do suggest it for travel on the weekends, holidays, and during the high-season months of July and August (especially for an afternoon return ferry from Capri). You can purchase tickets online in advance via our partner TraghettiLines .

Hydrofoils from Salerno to Capri run from May to mid-October. The departure piers are Molo Manfredi and Piazza della Concordia.

Ferries to Capri from Positano, Amalfi, and the other towns on the Amalfi Coast run from mid-April through October. The ports are all located in the center of town along the coastline. These routes are often canceled in case of rough seas.

Ferries between Ischia and Capri run from mid-April through October. Hydrofoils to Capri depart from Ischia Porto. info about Ischia and Procida

Schedules and Durations

Schedules vary between summer and winter. Summer schedules are generally valid from around Easter to the beginning of November. Schedules sometimes change during the season so we suggest double checking a few days before travel.

How long is the ferry trip between Naples and Capri? Ferry: 80 minutes High-speed ferry: 60 minutes Hydrofoil-Catamaran: 50 minutes How long is the ferry trip between Sorrento and Capri? High-speed ferry: 40 minutes Hydrofoil: 30 minutes

Taking your car to Capri

Cars and commercial vehicles can embark on ferries departing from Calata di Massa in Naples. Keep in mind that non-residents can only embark vehicles for the island starting in the beginning of November to around Easter. For the rest of the year, you cannot take cars or motorcycles to Capri. The only ports that allow vehicles to embark for Capri are Porta di Massa in Naples and Marina Piccola in Sorrento (on the Caremar high-speed ferry).

What happens in the event of rough seas?

Ferry routes may be suspended in the event of rough seas. Hydrofoils are the first routes that are canceled, while high-speed ferries and regular ferries are only canceled if the sea conditions are particularly dangerous. It is extremely rare for ferries to be completely suspended between April and the end of October. Call the ferry company or Capri tourist information office ( +39 081 837 0686) to check if there are delays or cancellations. If you suffer from seasickness, we suggest taking a ferry rather than a hydrofoil. If you do take a hydrofoil, choose one with a single solid hull rather than a catamaran-style ferry, which sits above the water on two parallel hulls leaving an empty space in the center. We do not recommend taking a catamaran between Naples and Capri when seas are particularly rough, as it can be a very unpleasant experience.

Information for people with limited mobility

All ferries and hydrofoils are accessible to those with limited mobility, regardless of the ferry company. That said, we suggest contacting the ferry company in advance to reconfirm accessibility and to request assistance while embarking and disembarking.

  • Fred. Olsen Express: differences between trimarans and catamarans

Beginner's guide to trimarans & catamarans

  • Ferry Tickets

Traveling in the Canaries with Fred. Olsen Express has never been faster , safer and more comfortable . The Spanish ferry operator recently expanded its modern fleet by adding 2 new trimarans .

Now, if you can’t tell the difference between a trimaran and a catamaran , the team of Ferryhopper is here to guide you through everything! Below, you can find detailed information about trimarans and catamarans, their features and benefits, and how to best visit the Canaries with Fred. Olsen Express!

A Fred. Olsen Express catamaran in Tenerife, Spain

Up-close view of a Fred. Olsen Express catamaran in Tenerife

What are the differences between trimarans and catamarans?

The most essential difference between trimarans and catamarans is in their naval design and infrastructures .

A catamaran , to begin with, benefits from the general structure of a long conventional ferry, which helps the vessel travel faster. Its deck, however, is balanced on 2 hulls instead of 1, making the vessel more comfortable and easier to navigate.

On the other hand, trimarans , also known as “multihulls”, include 3 hulls , upgrading the experience of traveling by ferry in every way imaginable!

Benefits of traveling by trimaran

So, what does a trimaran bring to the table other than its fantastic design that resembles a spaceship? The 3 hulls make the trimarans of Fred. Olsen Express more versatile and stable , even in rough conditions. Their comfort is combined with enhanced speed , allowing you to reach your destination by ferry easily and conveniently. Traveling in the Canaries is nothing but smooth sailing!

In longer trips, with stronger winds and waves, the trimaran reigns supreme. It’s also an ideal solution if you wish to avoid seasickness , as the hulls provide better and more balanced navigation . Catamarans, on the other hand, are appropriate for shorter trips, with calm waters and good weather conditions.

Traveling by trimaran with Fred. Olsen Express in the Canaries

Interested in traveling in the Canaries by trimaran? We can’t blame you! Two technologically advanced trimarans are now part of the fleet of Fred. Olsen Express: Bajamar Express and the Bañaderos Express . Not only do they provide passengers with maximum comfort and luxurious services , but their environmental footprint is also minimized.

So, if you wish to cruise through the Canaries comfortably, check out the ferry route from Tenerife to Gran Canaria , where trimarans are ready to sail! With Gold Class, there are even wind-protected terraces , so that you can enjoy beautiful views without worrying about getting seasick! There are still catamarans traveling between Tenerife and Gran Canaria , so choose the vessel that suits you best!

This Torres del Paine catamaran ferry service is used by people who wish to get to, or come back from, the French Valley; and those who may be coming from or going to Refugio Grey.

It is NOT POSSIBLE to make reservations. Passengers must turn up, line up and wait to board.

Information on Payment and Departure Times

It should be noted that payment for the Torres del Paine catamaran ferry service is required on board, in cash in local Chilean pesos, but during high season they often accept other HARD currencies, for example USD and the Euro. However, if ExperienceChile.Org is handling your travel itinerary WE CAN arrange tickets in advance – but these will not guarantee you space on a specific departure, you will STILL NEED to show up early and wait in line.

Departure Time Schedule is Further Below

Scheduling of the Torres del Paine catamaran ferry service is set at specific times, however, as this is a monopoly service, the owners can, at will, change the frequency of these departures to suit the economic reality associated with income derived from each sailing. In other words, if it looks to them like there will not be much demand in a particular day, they may well cancel a sailing.

Naturally, this does not help when it comes to planning travel itineraries, but it can happen, although not often.

Climate and Weather

Another influence on departure times is the state of the weather. If there is considerable wind the service can be suspended.

Ministers rejected £13.8m deal to buy catamaran and ploughed on with £400m ferry building fiasco

T he Scottish Government rejected the opportunity to buy a catamaran for just £13.8 million as an alternative to its disastrous £400million CalMac ferry building debacle .

A former expert adviser to SNP ministers has revealed he flagged the opportunity to purchase the 800-seat Galleons Passage from a shipyard in Asia in 2017 but believes officials knocked it back to spare their blushes.

The vessel which can also carry 100 cars would have been a near perfect fit for the for the crucial Arran crossing but Professor Alf Baird’s suggestion was not acted upon.

The Sunday Mail can reveal he believes the suggestion was rejected because the government did not want to highlight the fact a far cheaper alternative to its bungled Ferguson Marine contract was available.

Baird, a former director of the Maritime Research Group at Napier University and former member of the Scottish Government’s Expert Ferry Group, said: “In 2017, a 100-car and 800-passenger capacity catamaran nearing completion in an Asian yard became available, in part due to the then financial crisis in Venezuela where the ferry was originally destined.

“I made this opportunity known to the ScotGov Expert Ferry Group and proposed the vessel be acquired or chartered for use here, most likely for Arran.

“The price of the boat was put at £13.8million, which was considerably less than the two similar size vessels ordered at Ferguson’s – at that time for an expected price of £50million each.

“It was immediately available and could have helped alleviate pressure on the CalMac network.

“CalMac and the government’s ferry owner CMAL prepared a brief three-page response which, while suggesting a few minor hurdles, made clear that with some modification to piers which were planned anyway for the Arran route, the vessel could easily and quickly be brought into service.

“However there was no further action by government agencies or Transport Scotland and the vessel was quickly snapped up by the Trinidad and Tobago government and sailed there directly from the yard in Asia to begin operation between Port of Spain and Tobago.”

Former First Minister Humza Yousaf was Transport Minister at the time Baird suggested the catamaran purchase in 2017.

The Galleons Passage is now operational in the Caribbean while in Scotland the price of two traditional monohull ferries has rocketed to around £400million. Neither are yet in service nine years after being ordered.

The contract for two CalMac vessels was awarded to Ferguson Marine in 2015, and both were originally due for delivery in 2018.

But the construction has faced design challenges and delays, with the yard falling back into administration.

It was subsequently nationalised, but problems continued and the cost of the ships has risen to about four times the original £97million contract price.

Baird added: “From my perspective, as a member of the Ministers Expert Ferry Group at the time, the Scottish Government and its agencies rejected the offer of the catamaran primarily because they did not want it known that it was possible to acquire same capacity ferries for a fraction of the price of CMAL and CalMac in-house specified monohulls, and which also cost much less to operate.

“The same thing more or less occurred recently in 2021 when another nearly completed large car-ferry catamaran became available from a yard in Asia for a price of around £12million.

“This time the Mull and Iona Ferry Committee were informed and they undertook extensive research and lobbying work to demonstrate that such a vessel could be operated on the Mull-Oban route - again much cheaper than a typical £50million CMAL monohull.

“The ongoing tragedy is that CMAL currently has on order four 100-car ferries in Turkey at a cost of £50million each, when we know that it is possible to acquire at least two and possibly three catamarans for the same price.

“At least two catamarans could have already been operational in Scotland at low cost. We know now that catamarans can of course work on CalMac routes given the charter of Pentland Ferries MV Alfred for the past year and more.

“It is inexplicable why efforts to persuade CMAL, Transport Scotland and ultimately Scottish Government ministers to buy a catamaran have been ignored, and the public are paying a heavy price.”

Last year it emerged a Scottish entrepreneur who claimed he could create an £800million catamaran building operation on the River Clyde is now set to work with the government of Fiji.

Dr Stuart Ballantyne, a Scottish naval architect and executive chairman of Australian marine design, construction and management firm Sea Transport Corp, has said there was no interest from ministers and CMAL involving the creation of a fleet of 50 catamarans.

Anger at “abysmal” and “extortionate” Isle of Wight ferries in UK

Paul bond 23 august 2024.

  • facebook icon

Nearly 13,000 people have signed a petition demanding urgent action to improve the reliability and affordability of the ferry services between the Isle of Wight and the English mainland. Residents report considering leaving because of rising transport costs that restrict access to medical care and personal visits.

The petition accuses the ferry companies of using passengers as “cash cows.” Travel on and off the island, the organiser Simon Jackson writes, “is absolutely extortionate and simply cannot be afforded by many people now.”

The Isle of Wight is the largest and second-most populous island in England. Situated off the south coast, it has a population of around 140,000. Tourism accounts for 30 percent of the local economy. Access is chiefly by ferry, operated by two private companies.

Wightlink runs two vehicle ferry routes, from Lymington to Yarmouth and from Portsmouth to Fishbourne. It also operates a foot passenger catamaran service between Portsmouth and Ryde, which links up with the island’s limited train service. (Island Line is part of the South Western Railway private franchise). Red Funnel runs vehicle and passenger ferries between Southampton and Cowes.

ferry en catamaran

There is also a foot passenger hovercraft service from Southsea to Ryde, operated by Hovertravel. There have been several attempts to establish new small-scale private ferry operators out of Yarmouth.

Dissatisfaction with transport provision and its cost came to a head when services were drastically reduced as the COVID pandemic hit. Initially cut altogether, the passenger ferry was not covered by central government’s £6.5 million grant across the three companies to cover “lifeline” supplies and services.

When finally restored, the passenger ferry operated a severely curtailed timetable with the last foot passenger ferry to the mainland at 8.20pm. This encouraged retired headteacher Bronwyn Hamilton-Brown to set up the Wightlink Users Group (WUG) on Facebook 18 months ago, which now has more than 8,000 members. The Daily Mail cited the comments of a 71-year old resident who, having lived on the island for five years, was planning to leave as “You are completely cut off from society by this stupid stretch of water.”

The distance to the island from Lymington, Portsmouth, and Southampton is just four miles, six miles and 10 miles respectively.

WUG identifies its concerns as affordability, especially in scrapping fares for islanders requiring National Health Service (NHS) treatment on the mainland, and timetable improvements to allow later travel, better train connections and shorter delays between crossings.

Rising prices are a major concern. Both companies use dynamic pricing, making many crossings during peak tourist periods unaffordable.

Wightlink offers residents multilink passes offering lower prices, but these must be purchased in advance in one payment. Wightlink say their vehicle prices for residents start at £27.75 per sailing for a standard car, but this only applies if you spend £1,665 on a book of 60 single fares.

These passes cannot be used on every crossing, and only a limited number are allowed even when they can be used. Outside that limited applicability and availability, islanders report having had to pay up to a staggering £440 for a vehicle return during the summer.

The petition says ticket prices are damaging local business and tourism. While much of the evidence remains anecdotal, this seems to be borne out by July’s welfare benefit claims figures.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) reported 3,135 people on the island claiming “out of work benefits” in July, up by 190 on June when the tourist season was already underway. The figure is also up 600 on the equivalent period last year. The ONS figures misleadingly also include claimants of Universal Credit. This is not an out-of-work benefit, indicating that seasonal wages are not covering needs.

The crisis points to other infrastructural problems. The island’s population is older than the national average. A 2021 demography data report showed a greater proportion of population aged 50 years and over and a lower proportion of those aged 20-44 years than the average across England.

Young people (aged 0-19) accounted for 19.1 percent of the island’s population, compared to 23.6 percent across England. The 20-44-year-olds formed 23.6 percent of the population, against 32.3 percent nationally. Most strikingly, 21.4 percent of the population were aged 70 years and over, against a national average of 13.6 percent.

This inward migration of a relatively affluent group of older people disguises wider levels of rural and coastal poverty and deprivation and points to raised requirements for health provision which cannot be met locally. There is just one hospital, with few specialist departments. Patients must routinely travel to Portsmouth or Southampton for treatment and investigation.

The Isle of Wight is one of the “dental deserts” created by decades of underfunding and austerity. It is all but impossible to get NHS dental care on the island , and even the private dentists that have—for a price—provided some coverage are scaling back their work.

This makes the necessity of affordable travel even more apparent. Wightlink has a 50 percent discount for foot passengers and a £35-each-way cap on vehicle fares for those travelling to NHS hospital appointments. But this offer “does not apply to appointments with GPs, dentists, pharmacists or opticians.”

Even that £70 vehicle cap, won by WUG campaigning, is hardly satisfactory. WUG highlighted the case of Chris Tunnell, whose end-stage kidney disease requires urgent monthly dialysis in Portsmouth. Tunnell’s partner, Paula Brizelden, told press that they “get the [foot passenger] Catamaran and buses because we can’t afford to take the car.”

When Tunnell suffered sepsis and a stroke, his hospital trip was delayed because there was no ferry space available for the ambulance. Jackson’s petition denounces the ferries’ reliability as “abysmal.”

Wightlink claims their reliability remains high: 99.9 percent in June and 99.3 percent in July, with punctuality of 93.7 and 94 percent respectively. Wightlink claimed 29 cancellations across all routes, 26 due to mechanical breakdowns and three to staff shortage. During the period July 12-31, however, WUG members identified 40 cancellations on the Portsmouth-Fishbourne route alone.

Rather than logging cancellations, the company is issuing an “amended timetable” without the missing sailings so it can continue to claim high reliability. Last weekend, the company was forced to announce a “last resort” timetable because of staff shortages.

The escalation of mechanical problems and staff shortages at both companies points to their existence as financial assets dedicated to turning a profit, rather than service providers. Wightlink was originally Sealink, the ferry service of nationalised British Rail, sold off in 1984 for £66 million as part of the Thatcher government’s privatisation drive.

A £100 million management buy-in of Wightlink in 1995 was followed by a secondary management buy-out in 2001, worth £180 million.

In 2005, Macquarie European Infrastructure Fund bought the company. The Australian banking company’s aggressive profiteering from privatised public assets has had a devastating effect on infrastructure, as Thames Water demonstrates .

Macquarie sold Wightlink in 2015 to Balfour Beatty Infrastructure Partners (BBIP), which became Basalt Infrastructure Partners a year later. Basalt sold a 50 percent stake in Wightlink to Canadian investment company Fiera in 2019.

Always a private company, Red Funnel has also long been traded by financial corporations. Having bought Red Funnel in 1989 to forestall a hostile takeover, Associated British Ports Holdings sold it in 2001 to JP Morgan Partners. The Bank of Scotland backed a £60 million management buyout in 2004, and the new owners (including HBOS, Bank of Scotland’s holding company) sold it three years later to the Prudential’s Infracapital. In 2017, a consortium including the West Midlands Pension Fund bought the company.

Both companies have seen strike votes by their workers in recent years. In 2022, Red Funnel workers walked out several times in a pay dispute. In 2020, Wightlink workers voted for strike action against attacks on pension and roster agreements.

Until this year, the island returned one MP. The incumbent, Conservative Bob Seely, defended private provision of essential services while trying to sound concerned. His proposal was minor voluntary regulation of the ferry services and “more transparent ownership.”

Recent boundary changes created two small constituencies from this year. Seely stood for the new West Wight constituency and was so locally unpopular that the vote against him returned Richard Quigley as the Island’s first Labour MP. Tory Joe Robertson was elected for East Wight.

Robertson is pushing for government regulation as a means of protecting “competition” (i.e. private enterprise), saying, “People will need to put political differences aside and work together” to this end. Quigley—part of a Starmer government boasting it will be the most “pro-business” in history—has shown he is prepared to get on board, saying the ferries are “too big to let party politics get in the way.” Quigley said his concern was the effect the problems are having on business and the government’s “industrial strategy.”

The escalating crisis over cross-Solent travel stems from the profit system both parties defend. The issue is not how to game an existing pricing system structured for the benefit of financial corporations but providing an integrated transport and social care system for the benefit of all.

FAQ – Split – Vis Ferry

Both ferry routes 602 and 9602 are state lines , meaning that the state partly finances them, reason for this is to ensure that the people living on Island Vis have an affordable option to get to the mainland year around.

Basically neither Split port nor Vis port has a car queuing system, so normally cars, trucks, buses, would be loaded according to when they arrived at the port , but there is an exception, on Sat and Sun during July and August cars are loaded first on the first two car ferry departures to and from Vis.

Yes but only on the car ferry departures, for the bike you need to buy a ticket which costs the same as a foot passenger ticket.

You can bring your dog, if you follow the terms of Jadrolinija .

The Island buses between Vis and Komiza drive according to ferry and catamaran arrivals and departures.

Both are great options, you should take car ferry, if you like to sit outside and enjoy the views, and you should take the catamaran If you want the fastest trip.

2024 Split to Vis Ferry Prices

Below you can see the summer price list for the car ferry from Split to Vis, the foot passenger price for the catamaran is 8,23 € one way, while the catamaran price is 9,36 € one way.

It often happens that people travelling by, car or bus get a bit confused about how to calculate the price, so here are a few examples

ferry en catamaran

Car with passengers

If you are e.g. 3 adults and a regular car going on the ferry, the price calculations for one-way tickets are the following, car (Less than 5 meters in length, and two meters in height) = 47,25 € + 3 adults (3 * 8,23 €) = 24,69 €, so in total, your price will be 71,94 €. As there is no discount for return tickets the round trip price will be 143,87 € or roughly 47,91 € per person .

Jadrolinija Pricelist Split to Vis Ferry

Bus with passengers

For a bus the way of calculating is different,  if you have a bus with space for 30 people and 22 passengers , the price is 225,10 €, which includes the bus and the passengers!
