Bannenberg & Rowell is the direct descendant of the convention-breaking studio established by Jon Bannenberg – the universally acknowledged father of modern yacht design – in the early 1960s. Dickie Bannenberg and Simon Rowell continue the vision of the founder, and lead the design team in new directions : working with all the major shipyards; designing residences for private clients and real estate developers; collaborating with furniture designers and developing other creative partnerships.

The process of creating a yacht remains a uniquely bespoke and intimate experience. It should be a pleasure from start to finish. Let us work with you to create a new member of the most famous fleet in yachting.

The evolution of yacht design – yachting style

Evolution of yacht design, Superyacht builders, Marine boat construction, Future hull marina architecture

The future of yacht design

Author: Joanna Lewis

Yacht design is constantly evolving as yacht designers push the boundaries of traditional design and new technologies come to the fore.

Here we take a look at some of the most pioneering yacht design trends changing the yachting industry for the better.

Interior yacht design trends

Yacht interiors now have a strong focus on flexible layouts that are more open-plan. Furthermore, there is a growing trend for onboard spaces that blur the boundaries between a yacht’s interior and exterior areas. Vast glass sliding doors that can be fully opened, retractable roofs, and fold-down balconies are designed to completely eliminate any boundary between a yacht’s interior and exterior.

The latest interior yacht design trends are also harnessing exciting new materials such as sustainable textured wood, recycled glass, natural stone, and fine fabrics with a firm nod to organic forms that mimic nature.

Finally, advances in digital technology are transforming interiors, with vast tech windows or walls that offer virtual views and streaming services.

Exterior yacht design trends

One key advancement in technology has been glass, which has led to a slew of eye-catching vessels with vast glass superstructures. Not only does the use of glass create head-turning vessels, but this material also floods the interior with light, while providing owners and their guests with breathtaking views of the ocean.

Vast beach clubs are now the norm on modern-day vessels, enhancing an owner’s connection to the water and direct access to the sea. It is common to see multiple exterior decks for relaxing and entertaining.

Thanks to advances in hull designs, modern yachts now boast enhanced seakeeping and energy efficiencies.

There is no question that the world of yacht design is constantly evolving as designers seek to create ever more eye-catching vessels that meet the demands and lifestyle habits of today’s yachting enthusiasts

Lurssen MADSUMMER For Charter Profile

Integrity and the relentless pursuit of the deal defines Moran Yacht & Ship - I am grateful that you were on this journey with me. This magical machine KISMET is the second yacht I’ve had built with Moran Yacht & Ship. KISMET has brought joy, hope, and the gift of discovery to many lives - including my own. You have made this world a better place! Owner, KISMET
By way of background, my business interests include controlling stakes in 3 publicly traded companies which operate vessels in the 500 to 5000dwt range. On average, one new vessel a year would be added to the fleet. As a result, I have access to in-house marine architects, engineers and construction supervisors. Consequently, when I decided to build my first large motor yacht, I did not feel I needed the services of a company like Moran Yacht & Ship. In any event, I was persuaded to let them negotiate on my behalf while I simultaneously held discussions with other building options. Moran Yacht & Ship understands yachts, their incredibly complex systems, and what constitutes a practical solution to various owners’ ideas. In short, I would not consider building another yacht without engaging Moran Yacht & Ship to provide the services they are so good in delivering. Former Owner, NORTHERN STAR

winch design and burgess collaborate on project ace, described as "the perfect superyacht"

What makes the perfect superyacht? Experts weigh in with 72m Project Optima

British studio Winch Design has collaborated with brokerage firm Burgess on a yacht concept known as Project Optima. Billed as "the perfect superyacht", the 72-metre is the culmination of feedback from yacht owners, crew, and shipyards from across northern Europe, Italy and Turkey. The result is a semi-custom platform with charter and resale appeal and several desirable leisure features, including a private owner's deck, a 100-square-metre beach club and spa and storage for a 9.6-metre limo tender.

BOAT takes a closer look...

What is the perfect size for a superyacht?

72 metres, 1700gt, five decks.

"At a smaller size there are a large number of series or semi-custom build options available, which are dominating the market in that sector. At larger sizes, we find that our clients are often wanting to get more engaged in the development of the whole concept for the project so for this approach this really sat in a nice, sweet spot.

For example, if a client wants a traditional or plumb bow, or the elevator to also serve the lower deck cabins and beach club, this has already been considered and can be included, together with any other client-specific requests and customisation requirements." (Crispin Baynes, partner and sales broker at Burgess).

"72 metres is the perfect size to accommodate the features and square metres requested by the majority of clients. It’s also a manageable tonnage when it comes to regulatory complexity, whereby shipyards can offer a very competitive build time and a great level of customisation at an attractive price – all factors which are important in today’s market." (Jim Dixon, managing partner and creative director at Winch Design).

How has Winch Design's "signature yachts" influenced Project Optima's look?

"Both the exterior and interior design of Winch yachts have always been characterised by a 'signature', making them unique and instantly recognisable. Project Optima is no different. The design is pure, balanced, beautifully proportioned, and carries a 'blade' signature along her long aft superstructure lines, which enables an individualised exterior with different material and colour options. We hope this will appeal to not one, but a succession of multiple owners." (James Russell, head of exteriors at Winch Design).

How many shipyards did you go to with this concept? How did their feedback inform the design?

"We discussed the design with a number of shipyards ranging from northern European, Italian and Turkish yards. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive. Firstly, the design and technical platform proposed are feasible and in-line with their own design philosophies and secondly, the project aligns well with the requests and discussions that they are having with their own clients at the moment.

A couple of shipyards felt that a slightly larger version of the same design may suit their client base and Winch Design have been working on that. Watch this space." (Ed Beckett, senior partner and naval architect at Burgess)

What was the level of crew input given? How did their feedback inform the design?

"[Project Optima] was developed hand in glove with the Burgess Management team which is filled with ex-yacht crew, from captains and deck officers to engineers and interior crew. We drove the mantra hard that a yacht with a good operational setup will deliver a better experience for the guests on board.

Things which can easily be overlooked in favour of few additional square metres of guest interior have been driven into this project – appropriate crew numbers, flow of crew and provisions around the yacht, storage - and not just one large deck store but good functional storage distributed around the yacht. This is an absolutely fundamental part of creating a successful yacht." (Lucy Medd, partner head of crew services at Burgess).

Who else did you speak to?

"We sent the design to a number of our trusted clients who have experience chartering, owning and building their own yachts, or multiple yachts, with careful commercial considerations in their own designs.

Tips we garnered, that you only know from active yachting, ranged from window heights for seated views, to smart floor lighting at night, design-led accessibility options, guest pantries, hidden kids’ activity tables, a ship’s office that can convert to an office or "beauty room", flower fridges, beer taps, sauna and cold plunges, and bigger galleys for chef’s table or ‘kitchen party’ options. Which we baked back into the current go-to-market design package for Project Optima." (Crispin Baynes, partner and sales broker at Burgess).

How have you maximised Project Optima’s charter appeal?

"The layout of Project Optima places attention on the principal guest by offering a forward-facing master suite with 180 degree, floor-to-ceiling panoramic views. The "best in class" 100-square-metre waterside beach club and spa is also at the heart of any great charter experience, as is the 5.2-metre deck pool above. In fact, the entire aft area of the yacht is dedicated to relaxation, socialising and casual wellbeing. Another important feature is the central elevator which connects to main deck to the sundeck, allowing guests of all ages to connect easily from their cabins." (Jim Dixon, managing partner and creative director at Winch Design).

"Project Optima is also in a 'sweet spot', able to achieve a high volume of charters whilst also securing a very attractive charter rate versus annual running cost." (Ben Harwood, senior partner and head of charter at Burgess).

How have you maximised Project Optima’s resale value?

"The project has a fantastic design edge without being radical or too polarising in opinion and the features and functionality are top drawer for a project of this size. We have taken care to ensure that Project Optima has global appeal and that the design and layout isn’t skewed particularly towards one market.

Project Optima is not just a design that looks good – it comes with a huge amount of unique industry IP so it will work well too. This yacht is one that will be thoroughly enjoyed by the guests and the crew alike." (Ed Beckett, senior partner and naval architect at Burgess)

Tribale 120 Gran Turismo

There is no shortage of automotive-inspired yachts on the market—take the Tecnomar Lamborghini 63 , the Candela C-8 Polestar , and the Brabus Shadow 900 for starters—but that hasn’t stopped Tribale Yachts from diving into vehicular designs.

The first model, which is already under construction at Tribale’s yard in Pisa, Italy, spans 120 feet from pointed bow to sculpted stern. Penned by designer Michele Dragoni, the 120 Gran Turismo will be topped with an aluminum superstructure to ensure it is light on the water and quick to build. The vessel will also feature a raised pilothouse that provides “optimal visibility and control at high speeds,” according to Tribale.

Tribale 120 Gran Turismo

The 120 Gran Turismo can soar across the seas like a GT, too. The yacht can be powered by twin MAN V-12 engines capable of churning out 2,000 hp or two Cat C32 engines with 1,790 kW of grunt. Every detail has been designed to enhance speed, handling, and efficiency, according to the yard.

The yacht offers way more space than the average GT, though. The sprawling interior can be outfitted with five or six generous cabins for 10 or 12 guests and three cabins for six crew. The scenic owner’s suite occupies a prime position on the main deck, while the guest cabins are spread across the lower deck and the crew quarters are positioned in the bow. Every space has been meticulously crafted with the finest materials and attention to detail, Tribale says. Other highlights include a plush sundeck and a sizable swim platform.

Tribale’s lineup currently comprises four catamaran models, three crossovers, and two explorers. Work on the flagship, Tribale 165 Explorer is due to commence later this year. The yard also has a new Essence range in the pipeline, with three models of 45, 83, and 123 feet “coming soon.”

Who was on superyacht that sank off Sicily?

Twenty-two people were on board the Bayesian superyacht including British technology tycoon Mike Lynch, his wife and 18-year-old daughter, and Morgan Stanley International boss Jonathan Bloomer.

Details have emerged of the 22 people who were on board the superyacht that sank off the coast of Sicily.

The British-flagged vessel named Bayesian was carrying 12 passengers and 10 members of crew when it got into difficulty in the early hours of Monday.

Seven bodies have now been recovered. The other 15 people on board were rescued.

Here's what we know about those who were on the yacht.

British technology tycoon Mike Lynch was among the original six people missing. On Thursday, divers confirmed his body had been recovered.

Raised in Ilford, east London by Irish parents, the 59-year-old made millions with the software company Autonomy he set up in 1996.

He had an estimated net worth of £852m, according to the 2023 Sunday Times Rich List, and is believed to have owned the yacht.

Off the back of Automomy's global success, Mr Lynch was given the roles of science adviser to former prime minister David Cameron and non-executive director of the BBC.

The Cambridge maths and sciences graduate sold the firm for £8.64bn to US giant Hewlett Packard (HP) in 2011.

Dubbed the "British Bill Gates", Mr Lynch has been in the headlines in recent months over a high-profile fraud case related to the sale of Autonomy to HP in 2011.

HP accused him of deliberately overstating the value of the company before it was acquired by the American technology firm. Mr Lynch denied any wrongdoing.

In June, a US jury cleared him of all charges .

Hannah Lynch

Mr Lynch's 18-year-old daughter Hannah Lynch was also on board. A body believed to be that of the teenager was recovered on Friday from the yacht wreckage.

She had been on holiday with her parents, having secured a place to study English at the University of Oxford, according to reports.

Her former school, Latymer Upper School in Hammersmith, west London, said they were "incredibly shocked by the news that Hannah and her father are among those missing in this tragic accident" when the yacht first sank.

Angela Bacares

Mr Lynch's wife Angela Bacares was on board the yacht and was rescued.

The 57-year-old said she and Mr Lynch were awoken by the boat "tilting" at 4am - half an hour before it sank.

Jonathan Bloomer

Jonathan Bloomer is the chairman of Morgan Stanley Pic: Hiscox/ Linkedin

Jonathan Bloomer, the chairman of investment bank Morgan Stanley International, was confirmed dead on Thursday.

According to the Financial Times, Mr Bloomer appeared as a defence witness for Mr Lynch during his US criminal trial and the pair were good friends. He also chaired Autonomy's audit committee.

The 70-year-old was the chief executive of UK-Hong Kong insurer Prudential until he was ousted by the board in 2005.

He was also chairman of the insurance provider Hiscox.

Judy Bloomer

Mr Bloomer's wife Judy was on the yacht trip with her husband. Divers confirmed they found her body on Thursday.

Mrs Bloomer was a former board member at The Eve Appeal charity, which focuses on gynaecological cancers.

The charity described her as a "brilliant champion for women's health and medical research... an incredible supporter, committee member, and trustee of our charity for over 20 years".

Recaldo Thomas

The yacht's on-board chef Recaldo Thomas died in the sinking.

He was Canadian-Antiguan and part of the crew of the Bayesian.

His body was the first to be recovered from the wreckage.

Chris Morvillo

US lawyer Chris Morvillo was among those divers found dead on Thursday.

The father-of-two worked on Mr Lynch's US fraud trial and was a partner of law firm Clifford Chance's US branch.

Mr Morvillo was assistant attorney for the Southern District of New York between 1995 and 2005 and worked on the terrorist investigation into the 9/11 attacks.

In a recent LinkedIn post, he thanked the legal team that helped win Mr Lynch's trial.

Signing off the post, he said: "And, finally, a huge thank you to my patient and incredible wife, Neda Morvillo, and my two strong, brilliant, and beautiful daughters, Sabrina Morvillo and Sophia Morvillo.

"None of this would have been possible without your love and support. I am so glad to be home. And they all lived happily ever after…."

Neda Morvillo

Mr Morvillo's wife Neda died in the disaster alongside her husband.

The 57-year-old had a luxury jewellery brand, which she ran under her maiden name Neda Nassiri.

Ayla Ronald, a senior associate at Clifford Chance, survived the yacht disaster, the law firm confirmed.

The 36-year-old worked alongside Chris Morvillo in helping defend Mike Lynch in court.

Clifford Chance said in a statement: "Our utmost priority is providing support to the family as well as our colleague Ayla Ronald, who together with her partner, thankfully survived the incident."

She is originally from Christchurch, New Zealand, but lives in London, her father told local media there.

He said she was left "very shaken" but "she and her partner are alive".

Charlotte Golunski

Charlotte Golunski

Charlotte Golunski was on board the yacht and was rescued along with her one-year-old daughter, Sofia.

She spoke to Italian newspaper La Repubblica, confirming she survived the yacht sinking and told how she kept her daughter alive after she was rescued.

"I held her afloat with all my strength, my arms stretched upwards to keep her from drowning," she said.

"It was all dark. In the water I couldn't keep my eyes open. I screamed for help but all I could hear around me was the screams of others."

The 35-year-old is a partner at one of Mr Lynch's firms - Invoke Capital - and has worked there since 2012, according to her LinkedIn profile.

She also worked at Hewlett Packard, which acquired Autonomy in 2011, for 11 months.

Before that, she studied history at the University of Oxford.

She was pictured going ashore in Porticello on Monday morning and is from South Africa.

Her mother Heidi told Sky News said she was "beyond relieved that my daughter's life was spared by the grace of God".

"It doesn't make it any easier living with the heartache of those who have lost their lives [or are] missing. My very deepest condolences to the chef's family as they formed a great friendship," she said.

Nintendo's Pokémon patents may shed light on the Palworld lawsuit

The Palworld lawsuit doesn’t sound like it’s about creature design. What is it about?

by Nicole Carpenter

An image of three Pals in Palworld. They are looking down at the camera. One looks like a red cat, another like a chicken, and another like a sheep.

The Pokémon Company and Nintendo are suing Palworld developer Pocketpair in a Tokyo court over patent infringement , the companies announced jointly on Wednesday. Pocketpair responded to the lawsuit in a news release, saying it was “unaware of the specific patents” it’s accused of infringing upon. Without court documents — or specifics from The Pokémon Company — there’s no real way of knowing exactly what Nintendo and The Pokémon Company are looking at, but the use of patent infringement (as opposed to copyright infringement) means this case likely isn’t about creature designs.

A drawing of a hand holding a Poke Ball

The conversation around Palworld has largely been around its Pokémon-like Pals, which do bear similarities to Pokémon . Take Palword ’s Lamball, for example. Its appearance is quite similar to Pokémon’s Wooloo — and going beyond that, both are early game creatures to catch and battle with. But Nintendo and The Pokémon Company’s announcement on Thursday crucially did not include any mention of copyright infringement; instead, it cited patent breaches, something that suggests the lawsuit may involve the similarities in game mechanics, not creatures.

Nintendo has a ton of patents globally, but this specific lawsuit is currently only in Japanese courts. Nintendo’s patents are for all sorts technical processes it uses in its games, be it information processes, game storage, controller intricacies, touch screen usage, character shadows , or game mechanics. It’s been months since Nintendo said it was investigating Pocketpair and Palword , and that’s likely because they’ve been digging into the game to see what could apply, patent-wise.

Nintendo and The Pokémon Company have a patent in Japan (and a pending application in the United States) that covers a crucial and quite obvious mechanic of its Pokémon games — catching and releasing Pokémon — making it a likely consideration in this lawsuit. (In the U.S., the original patent application is still under review, sent back to the filer on Aug. 13 in a “non-final rejection,” meaning it’s not an active patent.)

The patent uses complicated — but precise! — language to depict exactly what’s covered, including lots of drawings and graphs to describe the processes that get to the on-screen action. Here’s the official summary:

In a first mode, an aiming direction in a virtual space is determined based on a second operation input, and a player character is caused to launch, in the aiming direction, an item that affects a field character disposed on a field in the virtual space, based on a third operation input. In a second mode, the aiming direction is determined, based on the second operation input, and the player character is caused to launch, in the aiming direction, a fighting character that fights based on the third operation input.

A figure drawing of a person tossing something at a creature. Instead of the creature, though, it’s the word ‘NICE’

Simple line drawings show a person tossing a Poké Ball at dinosaurs and dragons. It’s likely, but remains unconfirmed, that this patent could come up in relation to Palworld . The Pal-catching sequence looks a lot like it does in Pokémon games and in The Pokémon Company and Nintendo’s patent filing: A person lines up the throw with a circular target , then throws a Pal sphere right at the creature. When a Pal is released into a battle, it all happens in reverse — just like in Pokémon games.

Nintendo and The Pokémon Company also published another continuation application in late August , relating to riding Pokémon. The riding Pokémon patent documents show a person riding a bird, fish, horse, and what looks to be a sloth rock-climbing. This one feels a little less relevant to the Palworld case; riding Pals doesn’t particularly resemble any of the drawings, save for the horse or fish, perhaps. But in both these cases, the drawings are backed up by pages of specificities that precisely spell out these situations and inputs — the details that make them unique in the eyes of the applicant.

Kantan Games CEO and industry consultant Serkan Toto told 404 Media that it’s likely that Nintendo will go “a lot more technical” with the infringement case. “Nintendo would have dug through every single action inside the game, they would have probably reverse engineered it, and just find ways to sue these guys,” Toto said. Nintendo sued White Cat Project developer Colopl for patent infringement in a five-year battle; it could be a good reference when looking at the Pocketpair lawsuit. In that case, Nintendo cited five patents related to “touch-screen joystick functionality, multiplayer connectivity, confirmation screens in sleep mode, character attacks based on touch input locations and a shadow effect placed on characters hidden behind the game’s geometry,” according to Pocket Gamer . Nintendo and Colopl settled its lawsuit in 2021 for a reported ¥3.3 billion , according to Siliconera. Beyond that fee, it will also have to license Nintendo’s patents for the future. But until Nintendo, The Pokémon Company, or Pocketpair share more information on the lawsuit, this is all speculation. Nintendo told press it “will refrain from commenting on topics that relate to the content of the lawsuit.” Nintendo, The Pokémon Company, and Pocketpair have not responded to Polygon’s request for more details.
