Jeff Bezos’ New Yacht Is Finally Ready to Set Sail

Amazon’s founder has been spotted on Koru, a massive schooner with a design that evokes the golden age of sailing in the early 20th century.

Just in time for the high season of yachting in the Mediterranean, when multimillion-dollar megayachts descend on ports like Monte Carlo and St. Tropez, Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, has been photographed with his partner Lauren Sánchez on his new boat, Koru, off the coast of Spain.

Mr. Bezos’ vessel is a sailing yacht, a departure from the diesel-powered, floating palaces popular with other billionaires. But it is still massive. At 417 feet, Koru is the world’s largest sailing yacht, according to Boat International , and it cost an estimated $500 million to build, Bloomberg reported . (Parsifal III, the boat featured on Bravo’s reality series “Below Deck Sailing Yacht,” is 177 feet long — less than half the length of Koru — and cost $18 million , according to the website SuperYachtFan.)

A spokesperson for Mr. Bezos did not comment for this article; neither did Oceanco, Koru’s builder. Here is what to know about the boat.

For traditionalists, Koru is refreshing. At a time when yacht design skews outrageous — see the lizardlike, 262-foot Artefact or the otherworldly 463-foot Yas — Koru stands out as a schooner, a sailing vessel with two or more masts. Photos reveal a large sailboat with three masts, an on-deck pool and a voluptuous mermaid on the bow, that bears a resemblance to Ms. Sánchez. But otherwise, the sleek, classic lines suggest the patrician age of yachting in the early 20th century, said Robert B. MacKay, author of “The Golden Age of Newport Yachting: Between the Wars.”

“With the clipper bow and the dark hull and the masts,” Mr. MacKay said, referring to Koru’s concave, pointy forward section, “it reminds me of a boat built in 1930 for J.P. Morgan Jr., Corsair IV. It is almost like a reincarnation. It’s certainly at odds with the stuff the oligarchs are building — those look like bloated Clorox bottles.”

Compared with the world’s very largest motor yachts — built for sheer size and the accompanying bragging rights — Koru could almost be considered quaint. Azzam, one of the world’s largest motor yachts, is nearly 200 feet longer.

The Experience

Koru will be propelled primarily by the wind. “Sailboats are usually greener than most powerboats,” said Don Anderson, a former captain of M5 , the world’s largest single-masted sailboat, at 256 feet. “I’d like to think that Koru will be one of the most ecological yachts out there, with its sails and also with the technology that will be aboard.”

“When you’re on a sailboat, you’re more in touch with the wind and the waves than on a powerboat,” he continued. “You’re more susceptible to the elements, too. But you can leave California, and once you get past the Catalinas you can basically surf downwind all the way to Hawaii. All you need to do is run with the waves.”

Mr. Bezos has been a guest on similar boats, according to Bloomberg: In 2019, he was spotted on Eos , a 305-foot sailing yacht owned by Barry Diller and Diane von Furstenberg.

Bill Tripp, a Connecticut-based naval architect, said the appeal of this type of boat is clear: “When you are on a powerboat, you ask, ‘Are we there yet?’ and on a sailboat, you’re enjoying the ride and the ocean so much that you don’t ask that question.”

Koru will be trailed by Abeona, a 246-foot support vessel. Superyachts often have support vessels following along behind them. These “shadows,” as they are colloquially known, are for the “toys” — the ATVs, supercars, seaplanes, motorcycles, smaller boats, scuba gear, personal submarines and even helicopters that pleasure boaters might bring on a trip. According to its builder, this model of boat can carry these gadgets along with dozens of crew members. (Ms. Sanchez flies helicopters, and the couple was recently photographed taking a helicopter to board Abeona and then Koru.)

Abeona, a motor yacht, will have enough range to follow Koru from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean — a common course for yachts — on a single tank of gas.

The Kerfuffle

Koru set off a controversy last year — before it was even completed — in a face-off with the Dutch city of Rotterdam. The boat was built at Oceanco’s facility in Alblasserdam, the Netherlands, and needed to pass the historic Koningshaven Bridge, known as “De Hef,” in Rotterdam, to undergo testing in the North Sea.

When the city announced it would dismantle the bridge to allow the boat and its mainmast — an estimated 230 feet tall — to pass through unscathed, locals were angry. They planned a protest to throw eggs at the yacht as it cruised by. In the end, the bridge was not taken apart, and the yacht was towed to a different location to have its masts attached.

Koru is Maori for “coil” or “loop” and refers to the unfurling of a fern frond. The koru design is common in traditional Maori art, where it symbolizes new life, growth and peace. Mr. Bezos included a photo of a koru frond in an Instagram post on Jan. 1, 2022.

Brad Stone, who was the first to report on Koru, in his 2021 book “Amazon Unbound: Jeff Bezos and the Invention of a Global Empire,” said the name was “consistent with where we see him today.”

“He is no longer this single-minded tech guy,” Mr. Stone said. “He’s in media and Hollywood and has a new relationship.”

Her interior is styled by design house Remi Tessier and she was delivered to her owner in April 2008. This luxury vessel's exterior design is the work of Perini Navi and she was last refitted in 2020.

Guest Accommodation

Bayesian has been designed to comfortably accommodate up to 12 guests in 6 suites. The supremely spacious full beam master suite features extensive storage space provided by the dressing room. She is also capable of carrying up to 10 crew onboard to ensure a relaxed luxury yacht experience.

Range & Performance

Bayesian is built with a aluminium hull and aluminium superstructure, with teak decks. Powered by twin diesel MTU (8V 2000 M72) 8-cylinder 965hp engines running at 210rpm, she comfortably cruises at 12 knots, reaches a maximum speed of 15 knots with a range of up to 3,600 nautical miles from her 57,000 litre fuel tanks. Her water tanks store around 14,000 Litres of fresh water. She was built to ABS (American Bureau of Shipping) ✠A1, Yachting Service, AMS, ACCU classification society rules, and is MCA Compliant.

Our recent super yacht projects

CQS  – 100ft Bakewell -White Super Maxi

CQS is the result of a massive refit of the previously 90ft yacht Nicorette. The technical innovations that have been incorporated  push the limits of thepresent yacht design. CQS features a radical new bow shape and forward section, and lateral “wings” to support the much more powerful new rig. The maximum width is then carried all the way to the transom to widen the sheeting angles and maximize the use of the crew weight for stability.

In addition to the canting keel, CQS has a DSS aqua foil system, which uses a sliding board that runs across the boat for one side to the other, and protrudes from the hull just below the waterline. The board is deployed on the leeward, or downwind, side of the boat to give lift and added stability. The hull, in effect, becomes like an aeroplane with one wing. Evolution sails is proud to have been actively part of the boat development and have supplied all the sail inventory.

Cavallo – Baltic 141

Launched in 2003, Cavallo is a majestic 43-metre sloop, built in composite by the prestigious Finnish shipyard, Baltic Yachts. Luxury sailing yacht Cavallo features exterior design by the yard’s in-house team and Judel/Vrolijk, while her interior design is by John Munford.

All upwind sails on Cavallo are Evolution Sails Expedition Membranes.

The photo on the left has been taken during the famous Millennium Cup, the most prestigious superyacht race that takes place every year in the Bay of Islands, New Zealand.

Jacquelina – 87ft Bill-Dixon

Jacquelina  is an 87′ Bill Dixon-designed cruising sloop that just underwent a rig modification from the previous Aerorig. The new set of upwind sails include a Square Top mainsail and an overlapping furling jib, which are both Evolution Sails Expedition Membranes.

Cartouche – 95ft Blue Coast 

Designed by the renowned naval architectural office of Coste Design & Partners and built by reputed shipyard H2X, the Blue Coast 95’ heralds a new generation of high tech opulent sailing yachts.  With a length of 28,8m and a beam over the 12m the Blue Coast 95′ is certainly one of the most elegant luxury catamaran ever built.

Cartouche is built for ease of handling and fast cruising with a minimal need for crew. The Blue Coast 95′ is to date the biggest luxury sail catamaran to equipped with a fully automatic furling boom allowing safe and easy sail reduction.

In 2018, Evolution Sails supplied a new square top Element membrane Mainsail and a E-Tech Code Zero, greatly help the boat in its performance cruising, nicely powering the boat in reaching and light-wind upwind sailing.

Recent years have seen bigger yachts push technology to the limits to create super yachts that sail as responsively and rapidly as their smaller race-bred cousins. Sailmaking has taken giant leaps in order to create sails that power this new generation of super racer-cruisers in a way that satisfies owners looking for peak performance. Quantum's Fusion M® membrane sails provide a more stable foil profile, resulting in better light wind performance and acceleration, with improved shape retention as the wind increases.

Fusion M sails are made using the most technically advanced design, lamination and shaping methods in the industry. Obviously the larger the sail, the heavier it gets, so a primary consideration for super yachts is the sailcloth. A Fusion M sail is approximately 15–20 percent lighter than an equivalent conventional panel sail, with greatly improved stretch resistance and shape retention. Headboards and fittings have undergone some serious rethinking as well, with new available shapes and materials offering improved strength, lightness and durability.

Quantum Special Projects Group for Super Yachts

The specialized needs of large yachts requires greater collaboration between sail maker, boat designer, rig manufacturer, boat builder, project manager and owner. Because most everything is custom, a high level of engineering is required. Witness describes how Bayesian disappeared from view after being hit by tornado off the coast of Sicily

Guests were celebrating the acquittal of Mike Lynch , the British tech entrepreneur, on the superyacht Bayesian when the vessel sank off the coast of Italy.

One person has died and six others, including four British nationals, are missing after the Bayesian capsized at around 5am on Monday. Mr Lynch is among the missing after the boat sank in a tornado off the village of Porticello, in Palermo, Sicily.

One mother aboard the yacht, who survived the sinking, said she had held her baby child aloft to save her from drowning.

Mr Lynch had gathered guests from Clifford Chance, the legal firm, and Invoke Capital, his own company, after being cleared in June of fraud over the multi billion-dollar sale of Autonomy.

He was found not guilty on all counts of an accusation of inflating the value of the company, which he sold to the US tech giant Hewlett-Packard for £8.6 billion in 2011.

The father of a Clifford Chance lawyer who survived the sinking confirmed that the trip had been intended as a celebration of the court victory .

Lin Ronald said his daughter Ayla, 36, is a lawyer who was part of the successful legal team who were invited to go sailing

Mr Ronald said: “I have texted with my daughter and she hasn’t given me any updates about missing personnel or saved personnel. She has only said to me that there are deaths, and she and her partner are alive. 

There were 15 survivors, rescued by the Italian coast guard from a life raft put to sea as the 183ft yacht went down. 

Among the survivors was a one-year-old British baby called Sofia who was saved by her mother, named by one Italian newspaper as Charlotte Golunski.

Ms Golunski, an Oxford graduate and a senior associate at Invoke, fought to prevent her child from drowning. 

She told Republicca: “I held her afloat with all my strength, my arms stretched upwards to keep her from drowning. It was all dark. In the water I couldn’t keep my eyes open. I screamed for help but all I could hear around me was the screams of others.”

Mother and baby were saved when they were able to get on to a lifeboat with others.

Speaking from the Giovanni di Cristina paediatric hospital in Palermo, she said she “can still hear her little girl crying in her ears as they floated in the waves and their holiday sailing boat sank”. She said she was amazed that the child, who had just turned one, had emerged from the water unscathed.

The violent storm had struck without warning. The Bayesian had been moored offshore from Porticello. It had sailed to Porticello from Cefalu, another historic seaside village on Sicliy’s northern shore.

Pietro Asciutto, a fisherman who watched the disaster unfold from his home in Porticello, told a local news agency: “I was at home when the tornado hit. I immediately closed all the windows. 

“Then I saw the boat. It had only one mast, it was very large. I saw it sink suddenly.

“I think the tornado came from Porticello. Shortly after I went down to the Bay of Santa Nicolicchia to get a better look at what was happening. The boat was still floating, then suddenly it disappeared. I saw it sink with my own eyes.”

As the yacht began to sink, a member of the crew fired a distress flare, its red trail alerting boats nearby.

Karsten Borner, a captain on a Dutch-flagged sailing ship also moored off Porticello, went to the rescue, pulling survivors from the lifeboat. He had at first struggled to keep his own yacht under control as the storm hit.

“This morning we got this strong hurricane gust and we had to start the engine to keep the ship in an angled position, and we watched the ship behind us not to touch them and we managed to keep the ship in position, and after the storm was over, we noticed that the ship behind us was gone,” said Mr Borner. 

“And then we saw a red flare, so my first mate and I went to the position, and we found this life raft drifting.

“Fifteen people inside. Four people were injured, three heavily injured, and we brought them to our ship. Then we communicated with the coast guard, and after some time the coast guard came and later picked up injured people.”

Emergency divers, according to the local rescue centre in Sicily, found wreckage at a depth of 187ft, where “through the portholes they saw corpses”.

Vigili del Fuoco, Italy’s fire and rescue service, confirmed the body of a male had been recovered from the yacht. In a post on X, formerly Twitter, it said the “lifeless body of a man [has been] recovered from the wreck by the divers.”

It posted the statement alongside a clip of the rescue effort with footage showing helicopters, boats and divers carrying out a search operation.

Investigators will now try to work out why the Bayesian sank when other ships in the vicinity remained afloat. The yacht had the world’s tallest aluminium mast at almost 250ft.

It is owned by Revtom, a company registered on the Isle of Man. According to company documents filed in April, Revtom’s legal owner is Angela Bacares, Mr Lynch’s wife.

A former chief stewardess who had previously crewed the Bayesian said the boat had always previously withstood the choppiest of seas.

Monica Jensen, 48, told The Telegraph: “It seems a bit strange. We have been in bad weather with it, crossed the Atlantic. It’s been all over. These things definitely don’t happen very often.”

Ms Jensen worked on the superyacht from November 2018 to October 2020 for a private owner, and said it had since been sold. She was with it on two Caribbean seasons and cruised around Italy, Malta, Greece and the Balearics.

Shen said the crew would have been well-drilled on the evacuation process, adding: “You can’t work on a boat without the right certificates, training and you do drills monthly.”

In a statement, the Italian coast guard said: “This morning at about 5am, following a violent gale, a 56-metre yacht named Bayesian and flying the UK flag sank off Porticello.

“The first shipwrecked were rescued by a boat in the immediate vicinity and brought ashore by four coast guard vessels, which promptly responded to the scene from Porticello, Termini Imerese and Palermo.

“Initial information received from the yacht crew indicated that 22 people, 10 crew members and 12 passengers, were on board the yacht. There are currently 15 people rescued and seven missing, one crew member and six passengers, of British, American and Canadian nationality.

“Of the people recovered, eight were transported to local hospitals. The vessel is reported to have sunk on a seabed of about 50 metres. The search continues unabated with naval, air and underwater resources, including the Messina coast guard diving unit.”

Bartolomeo Lo Coco, who owns the Tosto Chiosco cafe in Porticello, said it was common for rental yachts and boats to sail through the fishing village, adding that the captain should not be blamed for what had occurred because the weather had been so unpredictable.

“This was a terrible misfortune that no one could have foreseen. It is nobody’s fault, the captain should not be blamed,” he said. “We are in mourning here, all of us are in mourning. We have never seen anything like this, ever. There is a very serious tragedy.”

His kiosk, which serves snacks and sandwiches, overlooks the water in Porticello. He said the tornado had not only caused the tragic accident, but also widespread damage in the port.

He added: “This wasn’t a thunderstorm, this was a whirlwind. It happened all of a sudden. There is a lot of damage here.  Boats were dislodged from their moorings and restaurant tables were broken within minutes and sent flying several metres.”
