Entries Rolling in for 2025 Transpac Race

Twenty boats and crews have already claimed their spot on the starting line for the 2025 Transpacific Yacht Race, including past first-place finishers Pyewacket , Roy Disney’s Andrews 70, and the Kernan 68  Peligroso , now skippered by Cecil Rossi, who won his division in 2023 racing the Farr 57  Ho’okolehe . So far, the scratch sheet is showing several veteran entries, boats with well-honed professional crew and many smaller amateur teams with shorter waterlines, such as Alli Bell’s Cal 40  Restless  and Stacy Sinclair’s Kelly Peterson  Rhiannon . It’s a hallmark of Transpac that the challenges inherent to a long-distance ocean race attract such a variety of sailors, from those looking to break speed records or personal bests, to those wanting to experience that comes from successfully crossing the Pacific in company with some of the best sailors in the world.

Transpac Adopts Rating System that Incorporates Weather

At their March meeting, the Transpacific Yacht Club (TPYC) Board of Directors adopted a rating system that incorporates weather predictions at the recommendation of the club’s technical committee following their analysis of previous race data . The 2025 Transpacific Yacht Race will employ Time-on-Time Forecast Time Correction Factor (F-TCF) ratings calculated from the polar performance data from each boat’s ORR certificate and weather predictions available on the morning of each start. Weather-adjusted ratings computed for each start day maximize the chances for each division to compete fairly against the entire fleet.

A yachting way of life fades

The Malibu Yacht Club was in existence for 60 years, when dwindling membership and rough seas ended a once vibrant sport in Malibu waters.

By Hans Laetz / Special to The Malibu Times

One upon a time, the beaches of Malibu were flecked with dozens of sailboats anchored in the sand. Catamarans, dugouts, little sabots and other wind-powered boats were lined up on the sand all along the coast.

In the 1970s, between 50 and 70 catamarans were kept at the Malibu Yacht Club, a vacant lot on the strand just east of the Malibu Pier. “Beer can” races (named after the prizes) were held every weekend.

“It was wonderful, a paradise,” said Bill Schultz, remembering the sailing, the races and the parties.

Special regattas had 200 homemade catamarans navigating the ocean near Surfrider Beach, he recalled.

It was in 1946 that the Malibu Yacht Club was founded by a group of sabot sailors- sabots basically being dinghies with sails. Club members soon began playing with exotic, multihull homemade boats called “catamarans.”

“Our club president, Warren Seaman, had been to Hawaii and [had] seen the native outriggers,” recalled longtime yacht club sailor and former Malibu resident Jerry Smith. “Pretty soon, the whole Malibu coast had all these experimental boats made out of resin and plywood.”

A new variety of homemade sailboat, called the Malibu Outrigger, was invented and perfected along this coast. On most weekends, the horizon was marked with sails.

Today, it’s rare to see a sail on the Malibu coast. And since the landing of powered watercraft along the city’s 27-mile coastline is illegal, that means recreational boating is all but moribund in Malibu waters.

Old salts say the relative popularity of boating ebbs and flows, and right now it’s growing again. Record attendance is reported at the Los Angeles Boat Show, which is open at the Convention Center downtown through this weekend. Business writers say Californians, flush with refinance cash from their escalating house values, are snapping up boats.

But in Malibu, having a boat these days means having a trailer, or renting a slip 20 to 30 miles away at Channel Islands Harbor in Oxnard, or in Marina del Rey. The local geography means the nearest marinas and boat launching ramps are too far from Malibu to allow for day sailors to reach local waters.

“And people are not just sailing the little boats anymore,” said yacht broker Steve Curran, who at one time was the Hobie Cat dealer in Malibu. Curran said he sold dozens of the small catamarans during the 1970s and ’80s “They had the speed, they had the colors, they had the styling and they were cheap. People just dragged them up on the beach.”

Mike Inman, another boat dealer, said the small boat sailing market may have been a victim of its own success.

“People got the taste of sailing on a small cat, and the first thing they want is to go to Catalina and sleep on the boat,” he said. “You can’t do that on a Hobie.”

But in the 1970s, people did just that, wrapping a sleeping bag in a waterproof sack and charging off from Malibu, out through the waves and crossing 40 miles of open ocean to camp on Catalina Island, Schultz said.

“If you had the speed, which those boats do, you could push off the beach, set the sail, snap down the rudders and just blow through the waves,” Schultz said. “And coming on with the waves, you could surf them. Man, that was fun.”

The bigger boats favored by people nowadays need slips or launching ramps, and cannot negotiate the Malibu surf, Inman said. And the city of Malibu bans power craft, including little boats commonly called Jet Skis, from landing on public and private beaches within city limits.

But why do few pleasure boats travel along the picturesque Malibu coast, when hundreds of them float off Venice or Manhattan beaches on lazy sunny days?

“Malibu is so far from Marina del Rey, and Catalina Island is only a little bit further. Plus Malibu is straight upwind from the marina, and you really get beat up coming up there,” said Inman. “It takes a lot to get to Malibu.”

Nevertheless, that does not deter a small flotilla of yachts and sailboats from routinely anchoring at Paradise Cove during summer months, when waves and winds are less forceful and a boat anchor will hold. Winter storms will take almost anything at anchor, and there are no fixed buoys for pleasure boats anywhere in Malibu.

Last December’s high waves washed away a few catamarans beached at Paradise Cove, taking nearly the last small boats that remained on the local scene.

The closest marina to Malibu is not Marina del Rey, but is Channel Islands Harbor in Oxnard. Slip rental there is about $350 a month, although boats can be stored on land there for a third of that cost.

That leaves trailer boats as the last alternative for Malibu boat fans, Inman said. He sells a sleep-aboard sailboat called the Macgregor 26M, a flat-bottomed sailboat that trailers easily and yet is safe and big enough to sleep six onboard at Catalina Island.

But few teenagers sail anymore, Inman said.

“Computer games, iPods, all sorts of alternative entertainment things [take their attention],” he said. “They just aren’t that interested in sailing anymore.”

The Malibu Yacht Club lost its lease 20 years ago, and moved to a windier spot at Trancas. Smith, who has been a member since 1969, said the rougher surf at Trancas was a factor in dwindling membership.

“They were all a bunch of sissies, they didn’t like crashing out through the surf,” Smith recalled with a laugh.

Winter storms in 1998 washed the remaining sailboats and the storage container housing sails into the ocean, ending the club’s official presence after 60 years.

Islanders sights set high in national boat race

sailboat race malibu

A group of Guernsey rowers are hoping to secure a top 10 finish in the Monster the Loch race.

Guernsey is sending three teams to compete against about 100 crews rowing the length of Scotland's Loch Ness on Saturday.

Those taking part include international rowers and kayakers using vessels including self-built rowing boats and 18-man Dragon Boats.

Cox Nicky Will said: "It's a long race, 21 miles. So that's a big challenge for us. Completely different rowing conditions. We're used to waves, rocks, tides."

In 2023, 100 crews and 420 competitors from all over the World took part in the race.

The current record for the 21-mile course is held by the Great British 8s who clocked a time of two hours and four minutes.

Sam de Kooker said: "We've all been rowing all season, we've done about 15 races each, doing lots of training and some of us have been training through winter as well.

"The races that we do over here are probably the best preparation because you are into that higher level and higher intensity racing."

Speed Boat Beach powers home a winner for Baffert in Malibu

In a stretch battle befitting its status as Santa Anita’s opening-day headliner, Tuesday’s Grade 1, $300,000  Malibu Stakes  showcased  Speed Boat Beach  and stablemate Hejazi as they threw down from the quarter pole home.

With favored Speed Boat Beach prevailing by 1 1/2 lengths while getting the seven furlongs in 1:21.70, trainer Bob Baffert collected the exacta as well as his record-tying sixth win in the race, putting him atop the prestigious Malibu list with fellow Hall of Famer Richard Mandella.

“It is a good feeling,” Baffert said. “Turning for home I knew I was going to win it. I wasn’t sure which one it was going to be.”

Click here for Santa Anita entries and results .

Ridden by Juan Hernández, Hejazi broke sharply to take the lead from his number 6 post position, but he was headed by Speed Boat Beach and Flavien Prat to his inside a half-mile out.

Racing as a team into and around the far turn, it appeared Hejazi put a head in front at the quarter pole. When they straightened for home, Speed Boat Beach was all business, opening up by a length. From there he was able to repel a resolute challenge from Hejazi to register his first Grade 1 win.

“He was really sharp early,” said Prat, who had three wins Tuesday. “I got him to relax, and we took a little breather. Around the turn he really went well. He didn’t mind being on the inside. He was really in a good rhythm today.”

Prat, who had not ridden Speed Boat Beach since Dec. 4, 2022, rang up his second win in the Malibu, following up on his opening-day score two years ago aboard undefeated super horse Flightline.

A Florida-bred, 3-year-old colt by 2014 Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Bayern out of the Pioneerof the Nile mare Sophia Mia, Speed Boat Beach made his third start of the year. He came off a fourth-place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint over the same course but a furlong shorter Nov. 4.

“His issue is that he has always been very aggressive,” Baffert said. “He’s aggressive in the mornings and aggressive in his races. We have been working on getting him relaxed, a lot of schooling. ... Prat worked him for me today, and he actually worked really well with Prat. He got along with him really well, got him to come off the bit a little bit.”

Speed Boat Beach went off as the 8-5 favorite in a field seven sophomores and paid $5.20, $3.20 and $2.60. Owned by Mike Pegram, Karl Watson and Paul Weitman, Speed Boat Beach is also a Grade 3, one-mile, turf winner who notched his third graded stakes win and his fourth win from seven starts.

With the winner’s share of $180,000, Speed Boach Beach hiked his earnings to $498,000.

Off as the second choice at 2-1, Hejazi finished three lengths clear of Giant Mischief and paid $4.00 and $2.60.

Carrying odds of 10-1 and jockey Kazushi Kimura, Giant Mischief broke from the rail and rallied for third place, finishing 2 ¼ lengths in front of Damon’s Mound and returning $4.00 to show.

Fractions for the race on the fast main track were 22.21, 44.42 and 1:08.65 in front of an announced crowd of 37,143.

Without declaring a next race for Speed Boat Beach, Baffert said, “I see big things for him down the road.”
