Top tips for sunset sailing

Ensure a seamless sailing experience by checking the weather forecast, tidal conditions, and sunset time. Aim to be on the water at least 30 minutes before sunset, allowing ample time to find the perfect spot and soak in the changing col ours of the sky. However, why not make the most of your boat rental and make a day of it!

Sailing Yachts: Riding the Winds at Sunset

As the sun paints the sky with warm hues, there’s a unique magic in feeling the ocean winds tug at the sails above you. Welcome to the world of sunset cruises on sailing yachts, where nature’s rhythm and man’s ingenuity unite for a mesmerizing experience.

Introduction to Sailing Yachts : Sailing yachts, with their gracefully arching masts and billowing sails, are both a nod to a bygone era and a testament to the timeless allure of the sea. Unlike motorized vessels, they rely predominantly on the wind, making the journey a serene communion with nature.

What to Expect

  • Quiet Elegance : With the lack of motor noise, hear the waves lapping against the hull, the wind rustling the sails, and the gentle creak of the boat – it’s nature’s symphony.
  • Close-knit Setting : These cruises usually accommodate fewer passengers than larger ships, creating a more intimate atmosphere.
  • Hands-on Experience : Depending on the yacht and crew, you might get a chance to hoist the sail or take the wheel for a bit. It’s as much an adventure as it is a journey.
  • Natural Navigation : Since wind dictates movement, the course might vary, making each trip unique. It’s about the journey, not just the destination.

Tips and Tricks for a Perfect Sunset Cruise

Embarking on a sunset cruise is akin to entering a realm of magical moments, where time seems to still just for a while. However, to fully immerse yourself in this experience and to make it as enchanting as the tales suggest, consider these tried-and-true tips:

Time it Right

Golden Tip: Start by checking the local sunset time. Arrive a bit early to ensure you’re settled on the deck, cocktail in hand, as the sun starts its descent.

Dress Smartly

Golden Tip: While sunsets are warm and mesmerizing, ocean breezes can be chilly. Layer up! Bring a light jacket or wrap, especially if you’re cruising in cooler climates.

Pick the Right Spot

Golden Tip: For the best view, find a spot that’s not too crowded. The bow (front) of the boat typically offers unobstructed views. However, the stern (back) can be less windy and equally scenic.

Sun Protection

Golden Tip: Just because it’s later in the day doesn’t mean the sun can’t be strong. Wear sunscreen and bring sunglasses to protect against those powerful pre-sunset rays.

Bring a Camera… and Patience

Golden Tip: Some of the most breathtaking scenes unfold just after the sun dips below the horizon. Wait for the afterglow, and you might capture a sky ablaze with color.

Stay Hydrated and Nourished

Golden Tip: Whether it’s a glass of wine or a bottle of water, keep yourself hydrated. Opt for light snacks to keep that seasickness at bay.

Mind the Motion

Golden Tip: If you’re prone to seasickness, pick a larger vessel (they tend to rock less), stay outdoors where you can see the horizon, and consider motion sickness remedies.

Engage with Onboard Activities

Golden Tip: Many cruises offer more than just scenic views — live music, dancing, themed nights. Participate and make the experience holistic.

Respect the Environment

Golden Tip: If you bring anything onboard, make sure to take it with you when you leave. Let’s ensure our beautiful oceans and waterways stay pristine.

cruise sunset

Research the Cruise

Golden Tip: Not all sunset cruises are the same. Some are romantic, some are family-friendly, others are party-focused. Read reviews and choose one that aligns with your sunset vision.

Local Knowledge is Gold

Golden Tip: Engage with the crew. Their tales, knowledge of the area, and insights can add depth to what you see and experience.

Pack Light, but Thoughtfully

Golden Tip: Aside from your essentials, consider a pair of binoculars for distant views, a blanket for added warmth, and a portable charger to ensure your devices don’t run out of juice.

Chasing Sunsets Like Never Before

Sunsets have a universal allure — a magical moment when the world seems to pause, and hues of orange, pink, and purple paint the sky. But witnessing this spectacle from the heart of the waters, with waves softly murmuring and the horizon stretching endlessly, elevates it to an unparalleled experience.

From the intimate connection of paddling your own kayak, the rich history echoing in traditional boats, the sheer luxury aboard plush cruises, to the immersive fun of theme-based voyages, there’s a sunset cruise tailored for every traveler’s dream. Each offers a unique lens through which to admire nature’s grand evening show, paired with memories that will last a lifetime.

As you embark on your sunset cruise adventure, let the horizons beckon and the golden hues inspire. Let every voyage not just be about the destination, but the myriad stories, experiences, and emotions that the journey itself unravels. Here’s to chasing sunsets, embracing the beauty of the moment, and setting sail towards new adventures under the canvas of a twilight sky.

Happy cruising! 🌅🛥️

FAQs on Sunset Cruise Tips

As the allure of sunset cruises beckons many, a myriad of questions often arise. From practicalities to making the most of the experience, we’ve compiled a comprehensive FAQ section to shed light on your sunset cruise queries:

What should I pack for a sunset cruise?

Essentials include a light jacket or wrap, sunglasses, sunscreen, a camera, and any personal items. Optionally, consider binoculars, a blanket, and a portable charger.

Can I bring my own food and drinks on board?

This depends on the cruise operator. Some allow it, while others provide their own food and drinks. Always check in advance.

Is a sunset cruise suitable for children?

Most cruises are kid-friendly, but some may be tailored to romantic or adult-centric experiences. Check with the operator to ensure the cruise aligns with your family’s needs.

How early should I arrive for my cruise?

It’s recommended to arrive at least 30 minutes to an hour before departure. This gives you time to board, find a good spot, and settle in.

What if the weather is bad?

Many operators will have a rescheduling policy for inclement weather. However, a slightly cloudy evening can often lead to the most dramatic sunsets!

I get seasick easily. Is a sunset cruise a good idea?

If prone to seasickness, choose larger vessels as they tend to rock less. Staying outdoors and focusing on the horizon can help. Also, consider over-the-counter motion sickness remedies.

How long does a typical sunset cruise last?

Most sunset cruises last between 1.5 to 3 hours, giving passengers ample time to enjoy the scenery before and after sunset.

Is it safe to go on a sunset cruise during COVID-19?

Many cruise operators have implemented safety protocols in light of COVID-19. It’s essential to check with the operator, understand their measures, and follow guidelines.

Are pets allowed on sunset cruises?

While some operators might allow pets, most do not. Always confirm beforehand if you’re considering bringing your furry friend.

What’s the best season for a sunset cruise?

While sunsets are beautiful year-round, each season offers a unique experience. Summers might provide vibrant, warm glows, while winters can showcase more muted, pastel skies. Local reviews can provide insights into the best times in specific locations.

Do sunset cruises offer any entertainment?

Many do! From live bands to dance floors, themed nights to onboard games, sunset cruises often curate activities to enhance the experience.

I missed my scheduled cruise. Can I get a refund?

Refund policies vary by operator. While some might offer a reschedule or partial refund, others might not. Always read the terms and conditions at the time of booking.

Is there a dress code for sunset cruises?

Generally, sunset cruises have a casual dress code, but some luxury or themed cruises might have specific attire requirements. Always check in advance to dress appropriately.

Are there restrooms onboard?

Most medium to large vessels will have restroom facilities. However, smaller boats or private charters might not. It’s wise to check with the operator and use facilities onshore if needed.

Can I charter a private sunset cruise for special occasions?

Absolutely! Many operators offer private charters for birthdays, anniversaries, proposals, or any special event. These often come with customizable options to tailor the experience.

Will there be a guide or narration during the cruise?

Many sunset cruises, especially in touristy areas, offer guided experiences where a narrator or guide shares interesting tidbits about the surroundings. If this is something you’re keen on, inquire with the operator.

Can I swim during the cruise?

Some sunset cruises, especially those in tropical or warm locations, might have a swimming or snorkeling stop. However, safety is paramount, so always adhere to the boat captain’s instructions.

Is there a best side of the boat to sit on for views?

Both sides can offer spectacular views, but the bow (front) usually provides a more unobstructed panorama. It’s more about securing a spot that isn’t too crowded.

Are tips included in the ticket price?

While some cruises might include gratuities in the ticket price, it’s common practice to tip crew members, especially if you’ve received exceptional service.

Is Wi-Fi available on the cruise?

Larger, luxury cruises might offer Wi-Fi, but many sunset cruises focus on the natural experience and may not provide internet access. It’s a great opportunity to unplug and immerse in the moment!

Can I smoke on the cruise?

Policies vary by operator. Some boats may have designated smoking areas, while others might prohibit smoking entirely. Always check and respect onboard rules.

Do sunset cruises operate year-round?

In most destinations, yes, but frequency might reduce during off-peak or inclement weather seasons. Always check the operator’s schedule.

What if I have a specific dietary requirement for the onboard meal?

If meals are provided, many operators are accommodating to dietary needs when informed in advance. Always communicate any requirements at the time of booking.

Are there group discounts available?

Many sunset cruise operators offer group discounts or package deals. If traveling with a group or hosting an event, it’s worth inquiring about reduced rates.

Sailing Options

It's no secret to islanders that a small fishing village up island, Menemsha, offers one of the most sought after views of the setting sun disappearing over the horizon and the remote Elizabeth Islands to the west. On the entire eastern seaboard, (well, maybe Key West), only Menemsha offers such spectacular sunsets. It could be Hawaii, Massachusetts. Welcome to Menemsha.

Have you ever heard of beach goers sticking around and actually applauding a sunset? I mean, really. But this happens routinely at Menemsha. It's a cult thing. And if they're not at the beach many from all over the island will stop what they're doing and drive to Menemsha just to be there, on time. Well, God bless 'em all. It's like an ode to the Sun, to thank it for being there, for a job well done, for keeping us alive and well, with hope, for one more day.

Adding to the glory of this view are a variety of boats seen on the same horizon. For example, the occasional fishing boat rounding Aquinnah returning to port with a full catch. How many have wondered what it would be like to be on the other side of that view, being on the water returning home to port at sunset? "Mass Transit 105" offers exactly this opportunity, an opportunity of a lifetime, for people who may not own their own sailboats but would like to experience and partake in the magic. Sunrise and sunsets are especially special to sailors and not just for navigational but spiritual purposes. You're not just viewing it. You're a part of it. You're out there with it. Closer. You're in it. Living it.

Rate for Sunset Sail

The cost of a two hour sunset sail is $440  ($100 more than a regular two hour sail). Any additional sail time,  to either side of a scheduled sunset sail time slot, (before or after) will be invoiced at $100 per hour.

For example, on a day when sunset occurs at 8:15 PM, a typical, 2-hour sunset time slot would be scheduled from 6:45 to 8:45 PM and cost $440. For someone wanting an afternoon sail, beginning around 4 PM, to be extended into and include a sunset, we would recommend a 3:45 to 8:45 PM sail that would cost $750 or a 4:45 to 8:45 that would cost $650. If willing to return an hour before dusk, (before completion of sunset) either sail would cost $100 less.

Conversely, someone chartering the boat for that same afternoon would be docked the extra $100 surcharge if their scheduled sail was not ended by 6:15 PM allowing time for the boat to be prepared for the upcoming (6:45 - 8:45 PM) sunset sail.

sail waning o sar at 2PM and include the sunset ime slot sunset sail  scheduled either before or after the sunset, (that would cut into, interfere with and preclude a normally scheduled sunset sail), will be charged an additional $100/hour on top of the $440. For example, a scheduled 4 -hour sail from  (incl uding sunset)

This $100 surcharge is also applied to the cost of any sail scheduled to cut into and preclude another client from chartering his or her own sunset sail.

$100 per hour for the boat for each additional hour                              including optional stop-overs (swim/picnic/exploring)                        on Elizabeth Islands, providing sail ends at least 1/2-hour                  before a sunset sail time slot.

*Exceptions: $440 for 2 hour Menemsha Sunset Sail or $100 surcharge                 for any regular sail that cuts into a 2-hour, sunset sail time               slot. A typical sunset sail would be scheduled to depart                     roughly one hour before sunset and arrive home at dusk,                   one hour following sunset. For example, a 2-hour sunset                   sail for a date when sun would be setting at 7:16PM would               probably be scheduled on that day to depart at 6PM                           returning at 8PM and cost $440. A 3-hour afternoon sail                   scheduled to end by 5:30PM (leaving 1/2-hour turn around               time before the sunset sail) would cost $340 +100 = $440.               Should the 3-hour afternoon sail (above) be scheduled to                 return after 6PM on this particular day, (e.g., a 4-7PM sail),               thus precluding a later sunset sail for the same evening, it would cost $340 +$100 + an additional $100 = $540.

(See date/time Table of Menemsha Sunsets/Moon Phases  h ere .)

$540 for 2 hour Full Moon, sleigh-ride sail.

(BYOB = Bring your own blankets.)

We feel this pricing is not so complicated as it reads. It surely is competitive. Looking at all the options, give us a call so that we can help you make the best, most cost effective choice for your group.

One person has died after a boat crash in Old Saybrook, Connecticut, Monday night, two others are missing and five people are in the hospital. The search for the missing boaters was suspended overnight and will resume Wednesday morning.

Nine people were on the 31-foot motorboat that struck a jetty at the mouth of the Connecticut River around 9:15 p.m. Monday while returning from Block Island, according to the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection EnCon Police.

Several 911 calls came in about the crash and rescue crews found the boat half submerged and significantly damaged.

One man was found dead in the vessel and six people were taken to the hospital, according to DEEP. One person is in critical condition, Captain Keith Williams, of Connecticut Environmental Police, said Tuesday morning. Williams said he believes one person has been released from the hospital. The extent of the injuries the others sustained has not been released.

The investigation is ongoing, but Williams said they believe all nine people are friends who went to Block Island for the day.

The capsized boat was recovered from the river on Tuesday and it was pulled from the water around 11:30 a.m.

Williams said Tuesday morning that the tide was coming in when the boat crashed.

Monument Valley 3 breaks the series' old boundaries by adding a sailboat

Netflix is bringing the sequel to mobile devices on december 10..

During Netflix's Geeked Week event , some more details about Monument Valley 3 emerged. Developer Ustwo Games says the long-awaited sequel builds on its predecessors in several ways, especially in terms of the gameplay, art style and story.

Perhaps the biggest change in Monument Valley 3 is the introduction of sailing. You'll be able to move the boat in almost any direction and, as such, "the game is no longer restricted to geometric spaces," game director Jennifer Estaris said during a call with reporters. Along with unfolding cubes that shift new protagonist Noor onto different planes, Monument Valley 3 is in large part about "deconstructing what we know," Estaris said.

Naturally, those changes allow for fresh puzzles and visuals as players navigate impossible-looking, MC Escher-style architectural spaces. Aligned with that, Ustwo has evolved the art style with softer and more abstract shapes (you are going to be navigating rivers after all). The result is something that looks very familiar, but like a hazy memory. Meanwhile, the soundtrack from an 18-piece orchestra might just stir up some emotions.

While the original game was about forgiveness and its sequel was a coming-of-age tale, Monument Valley 3 focuses on the themes of hope, togetherness and resilience. Noor is a lighthouse keeper's apprentice who is tasked with searching for a new source of power before light fades away from the world forever. It's the "most ambitious story" to date for a Monument Valley game, according to Ustwo marketing manager Jamie Wotton.

All three Monument Valley games are standalone titles with their own stories. That means you'll be able to glide right into Monument Valley 3 without playing the previous two entries. But there's plenty of time to check those out first (or revisit them). You won't have to pay extra for those mobile gaming classics if you have a Netflix subscription. There are no ads or in-app purchases in the company's games.

Monument Valley is available to Netflix subscribers on iOS and Android starting today, and its sequel will arrive on the service on October 29. Monument Valley 3 will then debut as a Netflix mobile exclusive on December 10.

Netflix revealed some other mobile gaming news during Geeked Week. Its multiplayer take on Battleship   (which includes special weapons and ranked modes) will drop on September 24. Subscribers will soon be able to play Civilization IV and Street Fighter IV CE on their mobile devices at no extra cost — the Netflix version of the latter will offer cross-play between iOS and Android.

Meanwhile, Netflix provided another peek at Squid Game: Unleashed before that multiplayer tie-in game arrives later this year . Last but not least, there was a first look at Blood Line: A Rebel Moon Game , based on Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon movies. The Netflix-exclusive co-op action game from Vainglory developer Super Evil Megacorp will debut in 2025.
