Princess Launches YachtQuarters Fractional-Ownership Program

  • By The Editors
  • Updated: January 17, 2018

Princess 75 Motor Yacht

Princess Yachts has launched YachtQuarters , a fractional-ownership program. The first model being made available is the Princess 75 Motor Yacht, with a maximum of four owners and a homeport of Port Adriano, Mallorca, in Spain’s Balearic Isles.

YachtQuarters involves four-year contracts. Owners can sell their share after two years. After four years, the yacht is sold, and owners have the option of leaving the program or entering into a new contract with a new yacht.

Each 25-percent share in the yacht entitles the owner to eight weeks on board per year, with two weeks during each of the four seasons.

Service, maintenance, crew and other typical needs are managed, with the YachtQuarters team choosing the two crew (captain and chef/stew/deckhand) to work on board.

Which yachts will enter the program next? The YachtQuarters website hints at possible future inclusion of the Princess 88 Motor Yacht, as well as Princess 30M and 35M models.

Princess launches yacht-sharing programme

The fractional-ownership initiative yachtquarters was announced at london boat show….

Princess Motor Yacht Sales has unveiled its new shared-ownership programme. ‘YachtQuarters’ will give owners access to eight weeks on board the vessel each year, two in summer, four in the spring and autumn, and two in the off-season.

Speaking to SuperyachtNews at London Boat Show yesterday, Henning Price – who is leading the initiative and previously worked as CEO of Princess Yachts Mexico – explains why this enterprise is distinctive from other schemes seen previously within the yachting market. “The difference between most fractional ownership programmes and ours, is that we manage and operate the boat 100 per cent,” he asserts. The first yacht in the programme will be a Princess 75 motoryacht and will be based in Port Adriano, Palma de Mallorca.

When looking at the luxury landscape, Price sees this as one way to engage with a different type of client, who has not considered yachting before or does not want to carry the burden of ownership. “The potential customers are newcomers to yachting, who feel a bit uncomfortable taking the responsibility of buying a yacht; they could start as shared owners, and then potentially move on to full ownership,” explains Price. Interestingly, Princess also sees this as a method to tempt previous yacht owners back into the market, by removing the headaches that they may have encountered with their own vessels. “It could also be people who have been yachting for many years and who would like to have limited access to a yacht, but they don’t want to have all the hassle and expenses. They have tried that and they are now just happy with eight weeks on a yacht.”

Price cites NetJets, the aviation fractional-ownership scheme, as a business model akin to YachtQuarters. Whilst CEO of Princess Yachts Mexico, Price drove a similar ownership scheme, which was successful in the region. He argues that the positive outcome of these programmes is due to the modern lifestyles of many in the luxury sphere. Those able to afford yacht ownership will often have a plethora of interests, and don’t necessarily wish to dedicate all their time and money to one particular activity. “A lot of people are busy. Instead of investing a lot of money in a yacht, where you will feel obliged to spend all your leisure time on board, it is better to invest in a share. This way, you still have time and resources to do other things as well,” he explains.

Price also highlights the cost-effective nature of the initiative, explaining how the average charter price of a Princess 75 is 52,000 euros per week, whereas the cost of shared ownership is 32,000 euros per week. Any servicing or maintenance is shared equally among the four owners, with each individual being responsible for their food and fuel.  “With a shared ownership, you don’t waste time or money,” he offers.

A core part of the fractional-ownership model is the idea of personalisation, something that is inherent with a privately-owned vessel but not often found on charter trips. This is something that the YachtQuarters team hope to tackle with their programme. “It’s still your own boat with your personal items and your crew. Immediately you are at home, the time you have on board is 100 per cent efficient. With charter, you have to get to know the crew and the boat for the first few days.”

At a time where the difficulties of bringing fresh blood into the industry is an undercurrent to many conversations, this method of ownership could be a way to engage with a previously untapped pool of clients. Price admits that, while there has been significant interest in the programme, Princess have not secured any owners as yet, but with the summer season on the horizon the brand is hopeful for a successful 2018.

avyachts-is-one-of-the-companies-looking-to-turn-the-superyacht-ownership-model-on-its-head

Disruptors: Meet the companies shaking up the yacht ownership model

In times gone by you had two options: buy or charter, but now the superyacht landscape is evolving at a dizzying pace. Chris Jefferies speaks to four companies looking to turn the market on its head…

“Shared ownership is not new but the timing has never been more right,” says Kathy Kennedy, COO of AvYachts. “The idea for the company came from trying to solve two major issues in the yachting industry: how do we bring in new people to yachting and how do we keep the current yacht owners who are tired of the cost and hassles of whole yacht ownership?”

AvYachts’ answer comes in the form of 10% shares in a yacht that is fully managed by a dedicated concierge team. Fees are paid quarterly and cover repositioning, crew, maintenance, insurance and all other operational costs. The firm launched its offering at the Miami Yacht Show  2017 with a Westport 112 and has since expanded to add a Westport 130. The fleet is now active cruising from New England to Cuba via all the usual yachting hotspots.

AvYachts is by no means the only company offering fractional ownership, but Kennedy is keen to stress their USPs, which include the option for a buyout after five years, a dedicated app and the ability to trade yacht weeks across size brackets and locations or swap for a week ashore with luxury hospitality partner Elite Alliance.

The shared ownership model has been gaining traction in the US for many years now and one company helping to spread the business model to the other side of the Atlantic is SeaNet, who set up their European operation in 2017.

Belgian entrepreneur Matty Zadnikar manages the Mediterranean fleet, which includes Mister Z  (pictured above), a Benetti Delfino 93 that is based in Split, and a forthcoming Benetti Delfino 95, which will be available on the French Riviera. Additional yachts are planned for Mallorca and Italy, while the firm’s US operations are also growing, with new 35 and 40 metre yachts in the pipeline.

Owners can choose to purchase a quarter, third, half or 75% share with running costs paid on a monthly basis. As there is a maximum of four owners per yacht, SeaNet ensures that each owner gets a minimum of seven weeks on board per year. To ensure that the peak season is divided up fairly owners take turns selecting their preferred week, with the order alternating annually.

“Purchasing a yacht is an emotive process,” explains SeaNet’s Louise Gillespie. “For all intents and purposes owners want to feel that their yacht is truly theirs, so we fully personalise the yacht before an owner steps on board, ensuring that the yacht is filled with their personal preferences including linen, cushions, family photos and art.”

Floating Life

A firmly established name in the charter and brokerage world, Floating Life first got involved in the fractional ownership world back in 2007 and has eight years' experience managing the Yacht Plus fleet: Ocean Pearl , Ocean Sapphire and Ocean Emerald . The latter two have been sold, leaving Ocean Pearl (pictured above) as the sole survivor on the charter market, being shared across nine clients and used 24 weeks per year.

Floating Life is currently part-way through an ambitious fractional new-build project called Dream K43 , which could see up to three 43 metre yachts built. “We are positioning ourselves to provide a new and financially sound way to experience the joy of yachting,” explains co-founder Andrea Pezzini. “Each client will be allocated four-time slots per year: two ten-day cruises and two eight-day cruises, totalling 36 days per year per owner.”

Clients can come on board via a time-share contract that allows for long-term usage, or as fractional owners with the option to charter out unused weeks and pocket the net revenue. Transparency of scheduling is a key priority for Floating Life, with clients able to see where all of the yachts are at all times, while the dedicated concierge department means clients can relax and enjoy the superyacht lifestyle.

YachtQuarters

One of the newest names on the fractional ownership scene, YachtQuarters was launched at the Düsseldorf Boat Show 2018 by Henning Price, who previously managed a similar scheme via Princess Yachts Mexico. “Yacht owners should be able to enjoy their time on board and not have to worry about the myriad of issues and often complicated decisions that come with yacht ownership,” he believes.

Backed up by the experience and infrastructure of Princess Motor Yacht Sales’ Port Adriano office in Mallorca, YachtQuarters is currently offering 25% shares in a new Princess 75 motor yacht (pictured above) and has plans to expand the fleet to add a Princess 88 and a Princess 30M.

Ownership periods are limited to a minimum of two years and a maximum of four years, at which point the owners will be offered an upgrade or a buyout. “Nobody needs a yacht for 50 weeks of the year,” Price adds. “Young families are busy; they don’t want to allocate ten weeks per year on their boat, so it does make sense to try and share."

During 2021 she has been extensively refitted to include:

New teak decks New external upholstery New fridges New engine controls for main helm & flybridge New cutlass bearings New rudder bearings New anchor winch Major service & upgrades to AC system throughout Improvements to tender New headlining in cabins New plexiglass in side windows Navigational kit upgrade Lighting LED upgrade

The essence of this syndicate is to create exceptional value boating, coupled with exceptional cruising capabilities.

This syndicate is a Fractional Association Platinum Member, working to the association’s Code of Conduct and fulfilling their Maintenance Management criteria. This includes an owners’ website for the selection of their weeks, a communication forum and real-time access to the management accounts.

A New Concept: Fractional Yacht Ownership in the Mediterranean

Wednesday 1st August 2018

Discover fractional yacht ownership in the Mediterranean. Your own Princess yacht, the wide blue horizon, yet without the traditional complexities of owning a yacht.  YachtQuarters is a new way to live the Mediterranean dream at a fraction of the usual cost.  Now we’re offering interested parties the chance to understand this new concept during the Southampton Boat Show 2018.

YachtQuarters was launched back in January 2018.  It is a unique fractional yacht ownership in the Mediterranean, where every aspect of the yacht’s operation, maintenance and management is looked after by experienced permanent crew and the professional management team at Princess Motor Yacht Sales, the world’s largest Princess distributor and a leading European maritime service provider for over 50 years.

The programme features a stunning new Princess 75 Motor Yacht, Maltese-flagged and based at Port Adriano in Palma de Mallorca, just 30 minutes’ drive from the airport. She boasts eight berths in four luxurious en-suite cabins, and separate quarters for two or three crew members.

The YachtQuarters yacht manager will ensure that each owner enjoys a total of eight trouble-free weeks onboard during the year: two in summer, four in spring and autumn, and two off-season. This ensures that owners get maximum value from their investment.

Outgoings such as servicing, maintenance, repairs, storage etc. are predictable based on costs from the previous year and shared equally between all owners. Individual owners will be responsible only for their consumables such as food, drinks and fuel.

The crew can replace the owners’ personal effects and ensure food and drinks preferences are onboard prior to arrival to ensure that the owners feel at home as soon as they step aboard their yacht. YachtQuarters’ budgets include permanent crew for the Princess 75 and her toys (jet tender, water skis, banana boats, Seabobs, snorkling gear etc.), complete management and operation, as well as reserves for unexpected expenses. In comparison to charter, the total cost per week with YachtQuarters is approximately 65% of a corresponding charter.

The yacht will always be kept in superb condition through the meticulous management of the crew and Princess Motor Yacht Sales’ aftercare service, safeguarding the investment. This will ensure the yacht is in perfect condition on arrival, ready for a memorable experience in the perfect cruising area of the western Mediterranean. Investment in YachtQuarters creates a four-partner ownership structure that lasts for four years, after which the boat is sold and the structure dissolved. If, after a minimum of two years, an owner wishes to opt out, they can sell their share as a liquid asset.

So, if you’re interested in learning more about fractional yacht ownership in the Mediterranean…

See YachtQuarters at the Southampton Boat Show 14th – 23rd September 2018

At this year’s Southampton Boat Show, potential owners will have a wonderful opportunity to engage directly with the YachtQuarters team and take a moment to tour the beautiful Princess 75 which will be on display.

Whilst at the show, visitors can speak directly our programme manager, and understand from his long-standing experience, just what is different about this concept and how it works.

Joint Ownership, Syndicates and Boat Share Schemes

Wednesday 1st April 2020

The private syndicate

A private syndicate is a group of people who decide to share the cost of buying and owning a boat – and whether you want to view that as multiplying your buying power by the number of shareholders or dividing your outgoings by the same, the merits of the approach are clear. The extra financial clout of your communal purse buys you the chance to source a larger, more capable and more desirable yacht, with premium options that have the potential to improve the boating experience. And when the agreed ownership period comes to an end, the extra regularity of use and the additional time, money and effort lavished on her maintenance by a committed syndicate of owners will often mean that depreciation is kept to a minimum. After all, not only will she achieve a strong selling price but, as one of four, six or eight parties, any loss is divided between you and your fellow shareholders.

A private syndicate does, however, require great care and consideration from all involved. In the first instance, you need to find a group of financially secure and like-minded friends who share your attitude to boating and who will be happy to be swayed by the group consensus on the nature of the boat, the spec, the cruising grounds and the schedule of usage. You need to ensure that your partners are as fastidious as you are in relation to leaving the boat in perfect condition after a week away with their families. You need to have a mechanism for protecting the interests of someone who might lose their allotted week through unscheduled repairs. And you need to commit to a contractual Shared Ownership Agreement to clarify everybody’s responsibilities, to eradicate any doubt or animosity and to put a procedure in place in the event that a member decides to sell his share.

Even then, however positive your collective intentions might be, a syndicate can be a tough thing to maintain. After all, it leaves all the logistical responsibilities for boat ownership in the hands of you and your partners and it also puts the onus on you to take a proactive role in protecting everyone else’s interests, as well as your own. Little wonder then that the number of dedicated companies offering professionally operated fractional ownership schemes has soared in the last ten years…

The professional scheme

If you want to ease the financial burden, increase your buying power, rid yourself of logistical complication and bring your outgoings more closely into line with the realistic patterns of your likely annual usage, there are now plenty of commercially operated fractional ownership schemes available. The idea is that a dedicated agency takes charge of everything from purchase, service, maintenance and storage to cleaning and even training – and all you have to do is pay a fee. In some cases (usually with smaller boats), that fee can take the form of a simple monthly payment over a set period of years. In others, it can involve an initial lump sum to fund the purchase of the boat followed by a regular monthly (or annual) fee for ongoing support, facilities and upkeep.

While the number of owners is usually between four and eight, it is often possible for a single owner to buy multiple shares if he thinks his likely regularity of use justifies it. But in all cases, at the end of the agreed period of joint ownership (usually four years) the boat tends to be sold and the proceeds split between the members in accordance with the size of each member’s share. Again, the logistics of prepping, marketing and selling the boat can often be taken on by the organising agency rather than the owners – and once the boat is sold, each member is then free to reinvest his share in a fresh four-year ownership programme with a new boat.

The YachtQuarters programme

YachtQuarters is the shared ownership scheme operated by Princess Motor Yacht Sales. Like most fractional ownership programmes, it is designed to deliver all the joy of ownership with far less in the way of logistical complication and cost. Where it differs most notably is in the provision of a complete management and maintenance operation that includes everything from the bed linen and towels to a crew and concierge service. Overseen directly by Princess Motor Yacht Sales, it brings the outgoings of ownership under control with simple, transparent fees and it removes much of the stress of complicated and critical decisions relating to yacht ownership.

Each of the eight available shares on a boat entitles the owner to four weeks of use, spread evenly throughout the year. That leaves 20 weeks spare for essential upkeep and maintenance – and because your yacht is cared for by a dedicated team of Princess professionals, with all the industry contacts and technical expertise that a global operation brings, you get the pleasure of using an impeccably maintained yacht, alongside the reassurance that your financial stake is being properly safeguarded.
