Sailing Qualifications

To skipper a bareboat charter or flotilla yacht, you need to hold a practical sailing certificate equivalent to RYA Day Skipper Practical qualification or RYA International Certificate of Competence (ICC) . For charters in Greece, you must now have the ICC certificate . You must also be assisted by at least one competent crew member over the age of 18.

The port authorities in Greece are now insisting on one of the following practical certificates: RYA ICC (International Certificate of Competence), RYA Coastal, RYA Yachtmaster, ASA IPC (International Proficiency Certificate) or the IYT (International Yacht Training) Passport. If you hold an RYA Day Skipper or ASA104 it will no longer be accepted and you need to obtain either an ICC or IPC from the corresponding issuing body (RYA or ASA). If your RYA Coastal/Yachtmaster or ASA105/106 certificate is more than 12 years old and does not have a photo ID, then we would also strongly advise applying for an ICC or IPC. If you are a member of the RYA or ASA, you may qualify for a discount or free certificate, otherwise, you will have to pay. The approximate cost is £50. Please use this link - RYA application for the ICC or ASA application for the IPC.

For charters in Croatia, Malta and the Canaries , at least one member of the crew or the skipper will also need a VHF licence .

RYA qualifications can be obtained by RYA sailing schools in the UK or alternatively choose from one of our overseas centres in Gibraltar, Greece or Turkey .

For  Seychelles,  the local authorities require an ICC for the skipper of a bareboat or flotilla yacht charter.

For Caribbean and Tropical charters, formal qualifications are not compulsory, however, you should be Day Skipper standard and be assisted by at least one competent crew . A brief sailing resume should be provided to outline your experience.

For Thailand A Day Skipper qualification is required as a minimum and you must have at least 3 weeks of skippering experience prior to your charter. A VHF qualification is compulsory.

If you don't hold the relevant qualifications then why not add a skipper ?

Sailing Levels

Winds force 2-3 (4-11 Knots)combined with generally shorter distances. Good for beginner or intermediate sailors. Line-of-sight navigation but basic knowledge of charts and ability to plot your position required.

Winds force 3-5 (7-21 Knots) with approximately 15-20nm per day. Intermediate experience required. Predominately line of sight navigation but an understanding of how to sail in open water.

Winds force 4-6 (11-27 Knots) with mileage of approximately 20nm+ per day. Ideal for experienced skippers looking to venture out to new destinations. Day skipper standard but with experienced crew would be recommended.

Why: Choose a Mediterranean Yacht Charter?

Mediterranean yacht charter vacations are always by far and away the most popular summer location. You can read hundreds of our client endorsements here . Think the French Riviera, Monaco, Italy, Croatia, Sardinia, Spain and Greece. This is where most of the large crewed superyachts are concentrated and this is where also where you will find a huge variety of interesting places and cultures to experience. The Mediterranean (or Med’ for short) has everything. The area covers a large diversity of countries, cultures landscapes and experiences. Yet, the fantastic thing is that they are relatively close together, so you can create convenient and action packed itineraries very easily. On top of this, the yachting infrastructure in Europe is second to none so there are dozens of beautiful marinas filled with beautiful private superyachts and mega yachts that can be chartered as well as all the shops, restaurants, bars and conveniences that you could need. Because of its popularity the Mediterranean has an incredible choice of charter boats available to rent, both motor (power) yachts and sailing yachts, including the ever more widespread large luxury private superyacht charters.

How Much Does it Cost To Charter a Yacht in The Mediterranean?

Mediterranean yacht charter prices vary according to the size, style and age of the yacht. Our luxury superyacht charter yachts rent from 30,000 Euro to over 1,000,000 per week, plus expenses, in the form of an advanced provisioning allowance (APA). Conversely, smaller 'all inclusive' type vacations cost between Euro 15,000 to 50,000 per week. Here is the full list of all the charter yachts and here are the current Mediterranean yachts with special discounted prices .

Timing & Weather: The Mediterranean Yachting Season

The Mediterranean yachting season generally runs from April to the end of October. During the height of the season, in July and August, the climate is warm and sunny and the winds tend to be light. While this is the high season for all tourism, you can still easily avoid onshore tourists while afloat. The weather can also be good during the shoulder seasons.

Tip: Shoulder Season Means Value & Choice

Another good time to charter your yacht is generally on either of the shoulder seasons from April-May and September-October. These periods fall each side of the main summer season when the temperatures are still comfortable. September, for instance, is an underrated time of the year because the weather is usually good (if not too hot) but the sea is at its maximum temperature which is ideal for swimming. At this time there is greater choice of berths and anchorages for your boating vacation and the onshore tourists are not present in their largest numbers.

Your Very Own Sailing Holiday Voyage of Discovery

Sailing over shimmering waters to destinations rich in history and natural beauty: what more could anyone want in a boating holiday? Famous sites from antiquity, white sand beaches painted on an azure ocean, quaint villages overflowing with cultural flavors, and culinary delights you will hunger for.

With its huge diversity of travel experiences, the Mediterranean has something to offer everyone who likes to go sailing. Italy, Greece and Croatia are the most popular cruising destinations, while there's much to enjoy about sailing in the Balearic Islands, Turkey and the South of France. All are covered in our comprehensive guide to Mediterranean yacht charters.

Taking the Work out of a Mediterranean Charter

With all the great destinations on offer, choosing a charter boat in the Mediterranean can be complicated, even confusing. For smooth sailing, it is essential that you sail with an experienced and reputable boat operating company. During more than 20 years in the charter business, we have developed a network of only the best operators - people who we know can be relied on to take care of you, our client. We will match the right yacht from the best operator to your budget, comfort requirements and boat-handling experience.

Our team members have spent a lot of time sailing in the Mediterranean, checking out the boats on offer and the way they are managed. And of course that gives us first-hand experience of the destinations too, valuable knowldge that we want to share.

In the Mediterranean, the suitably-able sailor finds bareboat sailing and boat handling quite straightforward. For extra leisure time, there's always the option of adding a skipper, who takes responsibility for the boat and getting you to where you want to go.

Alternatively, charter fully-crewed, engaging a cook as well as skipper for the ulitimate in relaxation. Even experienced sailors often prefer to hire a crew, which we carefully select in consultation with our operators. Your hired crew not only take care of all the work, but are also willing local guides. They'll recommend the best places to see and best things to do en route, and get you up close to the culture and lifestyles in the places you will visit.

When enlisting our help to organise your charter in the Mediterranean -or anywhere else - you pay no more for our service.

The perfect getaway: a private yacht charter in the mediterranean.

Booking a private yacht charter in the Mediterranean with Med Sailing Holidays can be the most satisfying, relaxing experience that you ‘ve had in a long time. Med Sailing Holidays will take care of you while you enjoy seven days of stops at the most beautiful islands

The Best Advice You Can Hear Regarding A Private Charter to the Mediterranean

Ask questions and discuss your needs and expectations with us to make sure that you understand what a yacht holiday entails.

Plan accordingly. We offer private charter hire with crew or cabin charter options if you wish to share a cabin and get to know new people. Pack accordingly as space on board is limited. You only need the basics and your swimwear, and perhaps a pair of fancy shoes to dress up for an island restaurant. Leave your jewellery and unnecessary extras at home.

Location stops. Our private boat charter in the Mediterranean includes the beautiful Greek Islands while you can expect stops at Melissani Cave, the home of Odysseus in Vathi as well as a visit to the Blue Caves.

Included services. We offer an all-inclusive experience with a skipper and hostess that will serve your meals and do the cooking and cleaning for you, so the only item on your agenda is to relax. We can also customise an itinerary for you should you not prefer the standard ones.

Added Services we Offer at Med Sailing Holidays

A trip to the Mediterranean in itself is already highly exciting, but with our themed week programmes, the seven days on the water can become even more of a special-interest adventure.

Yoga week. One of our “week experiences” is a yoga cruise. While you can still enjoy the standard itinerary, we have the added feature of a yoga instructor on board, to keep your body and mind healthy and moving in limited space.

Gay week. If you prefer to enjoy the week in the spirit of Gay Pride. We have an all-gay crew to add to the vibe of your guests, with Speedo Sunday and Undie Monday on the yacht. We also include a White Party on the party island as the cherry on top.

We further offer a Wine, Fitness and Dive experience, each custom made to suit the theme. The wine and fitness week both take place on the Croatia sail holiday while the dive week takes place in both Croatia and Greece.

Why Med Sailing Holidays is Cost-Effective

We’re a privately-owned sailing holiday company that caters to individual needs, and we adapt itinerary and services accordingly. If you are on a solo quest, you can even share a cabin to save on costs while not compromising on luxury. Contact us to book your charter holiday today.

I went on the trip alone last year and liked it so much that I brought my best friend to the trip this year! They made it feel exclusive and private with a lot of activities options we can choose based on own interest and own pace - no rush whatsoever. Food on board was fabulous! I would highly recommend it to anyone who fancy a proper break with a five star service!

Loved our recent sailing trip from Split to Dubrovnik. Awesome skipper Joe took us to amazing places such as Vis and Brac, finishing in stunning national park of Miljet. Great food throughout the trip by our host Olivia. Both made our trip as a group special and very easy. We will be back!

Alice

An incredible week sailing in beautiful Croatia aboard Sea Princess. Everything was so well organised and we couldn't have wished for a better group and crew to share this amazing journey. It's impossible to find words to describe the beauty of Croatia and sailing is by far the best way to explore it. Can't recommend it enough and will definitely be coming back for some more. SAILING HOLIDAYS: PRIVATER CHARTER

The primary boats we run for our sailing holidays in Croatia are Beneteau Oceanis 48 , which run full time and can be booked for a private charter.  We operate a full-time skipper and hostess on our Croatian sailing holidays and the boat can be booked on a Split to Dubrovnik one-way itinerary (or vice versa) for the ultimate 'tasting plate of Croatia' private charter.

The Oceanis 48 is an exceptional boat for a private charter in Croatia , as she has 4 x double cabins available, allowing up to 8 guests in cabins and an additional 2 in the saloon.  There are 2 master aft cabins and 2 forward cabins. The cockpit boasts the largest seating area on sailing boats in her class, giving you more room and comfort while sailing the Dalmatian coast, lounging and dining alfresco. The Oceanis 48 is spacious and a beautiful cruiser, perfect for your Croatian sailing holiday .

We operate a Lagoon 42 catamaran for our Greek Island private charter out of Lefkada in the Ionian Sea.  Our Greece sailing holidays are in the Ionian Sea for the calmest weather and for the most authentic Greek sailing holiday experience.

If you'd like a catamaran or luxury boat in Greece or Croatia , we can offer you a base-to-base itinerary (either Split to Split, or Lefkas to Lefkas) and will find the best boat available for your dates and budget.

If your group has special occasion, just as a honeymoon, birthday, anniversary or 'just because' let us know and we'll go to work to put on the best island hopping private charter in Croatia or Greece for you.

PRIVATE CHARTER - ADDITIONAL BENEFITS

When you book a private charter, whether that be in Croatia , Greece , Caribbean or any other location you are booking the private and exclusive usage of the yacht for you and your group. You may want a private celebration for your friends, family or just for a special getaway with your special someone.

By booking a private charter you are giving yourself more freedom, flexibility with the itinerary, port selection (within reason) and the amount of time you spend in beautiful bays relaxing or arriving in port early to make the most of the islands.

Advantages of booking a private charter is already knowing who will be on the boat, as it’d be your group and you can remove any anxiety about what the other guests will be like. You know that you’d have restful mornings and can conduct yourselves how you want in the evenings, whether that be civilized conversation over a wine, relaxing on the deck watching the shooting stars or turning the music up and having a little dance.

If you have any other special requests on your private charter, be sure to let us know in advance so we’re able to plan accordingly for any birthday surprises, meal requests or additional water toys.

The West Mediterranean sailing charter destinations

Skippered sailing holidays france, the french riviera (côte d’azur).

The French Riviera, also known as the Côte d’Azur, is a stunning sailing destination with a unique blend of glamour, history and natural beauty. The Côte d’azur is famous for its cities such as Cannes , the Cannes Film Festival Nice , Marseille and Saint Tropez . These cities offer world-class restaurants, casinos and nightlife, as well as beautiful architecture. It is one of the playgrounds of the world’s rich and famous. Also sail to charming towns such as Antibes , Villefranche-sur-Mer and Saint-Mandrier-sur-Mer , which offer a more relaxed atmosphere and the chance to experience Provençal culture. The French Riviera is home to some of the world’s most famous marinas, such as Marina Port Vauban in Antibes and Port Canto in Cannes. The South of France sailing charter season usually runs from April to the end of October.

Corsica offers more unspoiled and natural sailing routes compared to the French Riviera. It has wild, mountainous coastlines, secluded beaches and protected natural parks such as the Parc Naturel Régional de Corse. Corsica has a unique culture that mixes French and Italian influences. The island has its language (Corsican), slower pace of life, tradition and cuisine. Discover charming villages with traditional Genoese architecture, and visit historic sites such as watchtowers and fortresses.

Corsica offers a variety of sailing conditions for beginners and more challenging open-water sections for experienced sailors. The Strait of Bonifacio between Sardinia and Corsica is known for its strong winds and currents, making it an exciting place for experienced sailors. Its most popular ports: Ajaccio , Calvi , Propriano , or Bonifacio. yacht charter Corsica

If you want a glamorous and luxurious experience, the French Riviera may be the better choice. If you want a more natural, adventurous and budget-friendly sailing trip with a unique cultural experience, then Corsica could be the perfect destination for you.

Skippered sailing holidays Spain

Balearic islands.

The Balearic Islands are an archipelago of four main islands: Mallorca , Ibiza , Menorca and Formentera, which offer a fantastic sailing experience with a unique blend of relaxation, luxury and natural beauty. The islands have the most predictable sailing conditions in the Mediterranean; the wind is generally moderate and predictable, and there is plenty of sunshine throughout the year. Each island has its own unique charm and character. For those who love nature, the Tramuntana mountains stretching along the coast of Mallorca, the pristine beaches of Formentera, the charming villages of Menorca, and the world-famous luxury and bustling nightlife of Ibiza. You can sail along rugged beaches dotted with lighthouses, explore underwater caves, or anchor in turquoise bays with crystal-clear blue waters. The Balearic Islands are a well-established sailing destination with world-class marinas that have all the amenities.

Canary Islands

The Canary Islands, a group of Spanish islands – Gran Canaria , Tenerife , Palma, Lanzarote , La Gomera, El Hierro and Fuerteventura – off the northwest coast of Africa, with a year-round spring climate. This means consistent trade winds and pleasant temperatures, making them ideal for sailing all year round. Unlike the Mediterranean, which can get quite cold in winter, the Canary Islands have sunshine all year round and pleasant sailing conditions. The volcanic islands have a fascinating and varied landscape.

The Canary Islands are an area rich in marine life, you can meet dolphins, whales and even sea turtles while sailing. The crystal clear waters also offer excellent opportunities for snorkelling and diving, where you can discover underwater volcanic formations and vibrant coral reefs. Amalfi coats.

The Amalfi Coast offers a unique and picturesque sailing experience that combines stunning scenery, rich history and culture. The Amalfi Coast is famous for its dramatic beauty. Capri is known for its luxurious atmosphere, blue grotto and designer shops, Ischia offers thermal baths and volcanic landscapes, while Procida offers a more relaxed and authentic island experience. Sail to Sorrento , a charming town, wander the narrow streets of Positano , famous for its pastel-coloured houses, or visit Amalfi and admire the colourful houses that tumble down the cliffs. The Amalfi Coast is more expensive than other Mediterranean destinations but offers a more relaxed atmosphere with limited nightlife options. Amalfi coast sailing charter

Unlike the Amalfi Coast with its developed cities, Sardinia offers a wilder and more natural sailing experience. Explore the stunning La Maddalena archipelago, a national park known for its pink sand beaches and crystal clear waters, or hidden coves and caves such as the Grotta di Nettuno (Neptune’s Cave). Admire the fascinating Nuragic archaeological sites, and unique beehive-shaped stone towers from the Bronze Age. The area is known for its constant winds, making it a great destination for sailing all year round. The conditions are particularly pleasant in spring and autumn. Sardinia offers a more relaxed atmosphere, quieter nightlife and less developed port infrastructure than some other popular Mediterranean sailing destinations . The most popular ports are Olbia , Portisco , Cannigione , Bosa, or Alghero . The northeastern part of the island, Costa Smeralda , is a luxury charter destination, so you should expect higher costs here. Sardinia sailing charter

Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean, has a rich and fascinating history shaped by the Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Normans and others. Its capital is Palermo . The world-famous Aeolian Islands of volcanic origin are located here, each of which has a unique character and which you can reach most easily by sailing from Milazzo . Stromboli is known for its black sand beaches and the charming villages of Lipari. Visit the Egadi Islands, located halfway between Marsala and Trapani , with crystal clear waters and known for their ancient tuna traps, and as part of it the car-free island of Favignana. On the northwest side of the island, sail to the Zingaro Nature Reserve. Compared to other popular Mediterranean destinations, Sicily is more affordable, especially outside the high season. Travelling in the Mediterranean

As there are several countries and shores located along the Mediterranean Sea, we can choose from various opportunities to reach our destination. Browsing through the flights offered by the different airlines, we may get very cheap tickets if we book on time. We can consider going by car or taking a train between two countries; however, the greatest experience is exploring by renting a boat. This way the travel itself becomes an experience of a lifetime, and we will be able to see places that we couldn’t discover any other way.
