Lake Hopatcong Yacht Club

2018 comet international regatta report.

October 10, 2018 by Taylor Penwell Leave a Comment

Lake Hopatcong Yacht Club hosted the 2018 Comet International Championship on September 7-9th. The regatta was well attended with 23 Comets competing. The teams came from six different states along with four teams from Bermuda. Seven races were run in a variety of overcasting conditions ranging from light air and flat water on the first day, heavy air with gusts up to 17 knots on the second day, and rain with medium breeze on the last day.

The Comet class was designed by C. Lowndes Johnson in 1932 as a trailer version of the Star boat. The design combines a 16ft hard chine planing hull with a sloop rig. As a two person boat, it is one of the most affordable one-design classes. Since the Comet was first designed and built in 1932, many boats still sailing are classic and of wooden construction. In recent years, Whitecap Composites of Peabody, Massachusetts, have started building new boats for the class. At this years International Championship, seven of the eight new boats built by Whitecap Composites were in attendance.

A Class owned Comet was chartered to the championship host Lake Hopatcong Yacht Club Commodore Brian Murphy and son Teddy Murphy. Optimist sailor Teddy was skippering the Comet and showed the fleet that he has the “right stuff” for the class, finishing most races just behind the lead pack. Teddy received the Court and Ginny Memorial Trophy for being the Top Youth Finisher.

Congratulations to Rudy Bailey of the West End Sailing Club of Bermuda and his crew Olivia Eagles of Lake Hopatcong Yacht Club for handily winning the series without even having to sail the last race. Second place went to Mark Beaton and crew Barbara Colie of Mantoloking. It was no surprise Mark and Barbara did so well due to the fact that they have been competing all season together in a number of different one-design classes. Finishing third was Dick Harmon with crew Mark Wissner from the Leatherlips Yacht Club of Ohio. Fourth went to Talbott and Lee Ingram from the Shrewsbury Sailing & Yacht Club. Coming in fifth place was Bermuda sailors Peter Bromby and crew Nick Finegan.

Everyone was delighted with the facilities and friendliness of the club and the regatta went off without a hitch. Many thanks to Bill Nutzel who was awarded the Class Citizen Trophy for being an outstanding Regatta Chair for Lake Hopatcong Yacht Club, the housing coordinator Tom Lentine, the PRO Kevin Murphy and his excellent committee, and to the many Lake Hopatcong Yacht Club members who had a part in making this a successful regatta.

Lake Hopatcong Yacht Club marks milestone

Photo by Anna Murphey/New Jersey Herald George Malanga, chairman of the Lake Hopatcong Yacht Club’s centennial celebration, and his wife, Jill, stand on a dock in front of the 100-year-old clubhouse, which is dressed up for the occasion.

MOUNT ARLINGTON — As a boy, Burt Rosevear remembers summering at his family's summer home on Lake Hopatcong. He remembers when he first learned to sail, crewing on a 28-foot long E-Scow at 13 years old when he became an official junior member of the Lake Hopatcong Yacht Club.

Rosevear's grandfather was the first member of his family to join the yacht club in 1915, back in Lake Hopatcong's heyday.

"Lake Hopatcong was a major northeastern resort in the early 20th century with 40 hotels (around the lake) and two amusement parks with a roller coaster at each," said Marty Kane, yacht club member of 15 years and president of the Lake Hopatcong Historical Museum.

Lake Hopatcong was a vacation mecca for city folk who would flock to the water to retreat from New York City, Philadelphia and bustling cities in New Jersey. In the early1900s, a membership at the Lake Hopatcong Yacht Club represented prestige and wealth among those who could afford summer homes on the then-remote freshwater lake.

On July 9, 1910, 400 members of the yacht club walked the single dock of the newly constructed clubhouse on Bertrand Road in Mount Arlington to race in weekend regattas and dine on the freshly painted wrap-around porch.

Today, the yacht club bustles with the same vibrancy and enthusiasm for competitive sailing, leisurely yachting and socializing. The 105-year-old club is even more excited to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the construction and formal opening of its clubhouse on July 9.

The festivities will begin today with the club's annual fireworks display off the clubhouse docks that will begin at dusk. Celebratory activities open to the public also include an open house and historic tours July 9 from 1 to 3 p.m. and an invitation to the All-Lake Regatta July 10 at 11 a.m.

The yacht club centennial festivities include fleet sailing events throughout the first week of July, an old-fashioned country barn dance where members will dress in period attire, an antique and decorated boat parade and a centennial ball to celebrate the decades of history and enjoyment by club members and family.

"I've enjoyed it so much, and to be able to see my kids and particularly my grandkids up there, still enjoying it and using the summer house — it's what makes it all worthwhile," said Rosevear, 68, of Madison, who still travels to the lake every summer and goes sailing with his family every Sunday.

The property where the Lake Hopatcong Yacht Club now sits was purchased in 1907. In 1910, architect Lewis Pilcher  designed and built the white Georgian colonial clubhouse for less than $10,000. The interior of the clubhouse is accented with grandiose high-beamed ceilings with rustic sewn timber and Adirondack-style rooms, which called for local logs to be hauled across the frozen lake from the first vice commodore's estate.

In its heyday, the Lake Hopatcong Yacht Club attracted members including Rex Beach, American novelist, playwright and Olympic water polo player; chemist and inventor Hudson Maxim, who created a variety of explosives including smokeless gunpowder; and Joe Cook, Broadway musical phenomenon and comedian.

More recently, the club caught the eye of actor and director Woody Allen, who scouted the yacht club to shoot selected scenes of a film in progress, Rosevear said; however, Allen later chose a different location to film the movie.

The Lake Hopatcong Yacht Club is a seasonal club open from May to September. Today, 150 members are active in the club. Kane said membership has declined because there are fewer seasonal frequenters to the lake and more year-round residents, who do not need a yacht club membership for access to the lake.

Kane said there is no difference between yachting and sailing; the words are interchangeable. Often misconstrued, a yacht is a sailboat, or a vessel without a motor, not to be confused with large powerboats used mainly for recreation or luxury.

Yachts were created in the 1600s in the Netherlands as small, fast-sailing craft used for exploration, transportation and, eventually, war. Today, yachting is used for competition, recreation and leisure emphasized by organizations such as the Lake Hopatcong Yacht Club.

The history of yachting, from 17th-century exploration to bringing families together for a Sunday sail, has played a pivotal role in European and American culture.

"Sailing and the club mean so much to our family," Rosevear said.

Our 49th Annual Boat Show is in the books. Congratulations to VP/Boat Show Chair Mickey Schillizzi for a job well done. A huge Thank You to all those who volunteered to help make the show a great success. Even the weather cooperated.  Our boat show was the last beautiful day before the summer heat wave hit!

How lucky we are to be able to hold our boat shows at such a wonderful venue, the historic Lake Hopatcong Yacht Club. We are so appreciative of the hospitality the Commodores and the Yacht Club have always extended our club.

Not only was our boat show a success, but our June 12 th Cruise Night was one of the best. We had a total of 11 boats and 18 people. VP Mickey Schillizzi was the cruise leader in Cody Brooke; his 1959, 20 ft Chris-Craft, Sportsman. For those of you who may not know it, Cody Brooke is named after Laura and Mickey’s grandchildren (

It is worth noting that many of the boats in our club are over 70 years old. Kenny and Cindy Heaton’s Fry Denny, St. Lawrence Skiff is 105 years old! When these boats were built, no one thought they would be in use so many years later. Let’s get these boats out on the water and celebrate that they still exist!

Hope to see you on the water,

LHYC Club House Celebrates 100 Years

By Marty Kane I June 28, 2010

lake hopatcong yacht club commodore

This July 9th marks the 100th anniversary of the formal opening of the club house of the Lake Hopatcong Yacht Club.

Upon purchasing the land on Bertrand Island in 1907, the Lake Hopatcong Yacht Club had plans to construct a club house at a cost not to exceed $3,500.  The club had a few false starts on designs and architects, finally breaking ground in September 2009.  By this time, the club leadership had concluded that the initial cost estimates would not be realized and that a club house was going to cost between $7,000.00 and $7,500.00.  To help finance the building of the new club house, the by-laws were changed to introduce an initiation fee for new club members.  All newly approved active members would now pay an initiation fee of $15.00 and junior members would pay $5.00.  Annual dues were increased to $10.00 for active members and $5.00 for junior members.

Costs to construct the club house were partially offset by the donation of timber from various members properties, much of which came from Commodore Bird’s property on Point Pleasant Road.  The lumber was largely dragged across the ice to Bertrand Island in the winter.  As construction proceeded there were the normal additions (such as stone for the fireplace and plaster for the bath rooms) which brought the final cost to $7,380.36.  Along the way, the Board scrapped plans for a bathroom on the second floor.  A dock was contracted for at a cost of $175.00 and a flag pole was purchased at a cost of $150.00.  Additional expenditures outside of the building contract included water tanks, a cesspool, switchboard, grading, walkways, pumps, power plant, and plumbing fixtures This brought the total cost for the club house to $9,860.00.  Taxes for the new club house were assessed by the Borough of Mount Arlington at $100.00 per year.

lake hopatcong yacht club commodore

The new club house was described at the time as containing two wings, each containing spacious rooms which included a grill, committee rooms, card rooms, retiring rooms, smoking room, kitchen, pantry, and dressing rooms for theatricals.  A movable stage could be placed in the large ballroom for theatricals and minstrel shows.  The interior of the ballroom was finished in unhewn timbers.  It included a huge stone fire place of native rock.  The first and second floors were built with wide porches.  The club house included its own electric plant as electricity was still not locally available.  For many years, the yacht club was dependant on a water tower which stood just behind the building and can be seen in some of the early photographs.

The grounds were still being graded as the club house opened on July 9th, 1910.  Members of the club erected the flag pole themselves just before opening.  Interior furnishings, including Stickley furniture, some of which is still in the club house, was bought by the Ladies Auxiliary.  Numerous gifts were presented to the club by members to help furnish the club.  Commodore Bird presented the two large anchors which still hang from the ballroom ceiling as well as a moose head whose former location over the fire place can still be seen but which was removed after it deteriorated over the years.  In appreciation for all he had done, a large portrait of R.L. Edwards was hung in the ballroom.

Following its dedication, the LHYC club house soon became a center for lake activity.  Like other early clubs around the lake, the Lake Hopatcong Yacht Club most probably would have faded into obscurity had it not built the club house and sunk permanent roots.  Following the tumultuous years of planning and building the club house, the July 16, 1910 edition of the Lake Hopatcong Breeze reported that through the building of the new club house “the Yacht Club has been born again and taken on a new lease on life.”  Now 100 years later the club is still flourishing and the club house remains a living connection to those early days of the 20th century when Lake Hopatcong was a major northeast resort and hotels, dance halls, and amusements dotted its shores.
