Sodus Bay Yacht Club was proud to host the 202 4 EYC Regatta. The Eastern Yachting Circuit (EYC) is an International association of yacht clubs on the eastern end of Lake Ontario.  The format for the regatta is three days of racing. Thursday is a long distance race of approximately thirty to thirty-five nautical miles. On Friday and Saturday course races or “around the buoys racing” are held. Trophies dating back to the 1920’s are presented in each division for both the long distance race and course racing as well as Overall trophies for the distance race, Course racing and combined events. The regatta features PHRF – Lake Ontario Handicapped racing, One- Design Divisions and White Sails division. EYC 2024 Highlights

The band Shameless Henry provided the tunes for all of us to enjoy and dance along to. It was the perfect evening under a clear sky to dance and socialize! It was awesome to see our very own Erik Will on Keyboard and vocals! The races were all held on the lake and although the winds were light early on in the competition, the last day of racing had much stronger breezes.

The is adding a Martin 16 class race to this year’s event. This Canadian designed and built boat for people with a disability is raced across including an annual .

The can be sailed simply by a joystick and sheets or can include all the sail trim functions, including a modified spinnaker that serious racers use. Electronic controls or a sip-and-puff system can also be employed making it adaptable to most disabilities.

Unconfirmed speculation has it that Vikings may invade EYC this summer. An interception of an electronic communication indicates that the Viking Kraken could be behind this tactical invasion. The communication indicates that the Viking Kraken has also combined forces with the Viking Murlyn and enlisted the help of Viking Regardless to bring more boats from the south as well as Viking Berserk to bring boats from the west.

A confidential source says, “ ”

The EYC Committee has stated that they we will be watching the development of the possible Viking invasion very closely.

Oswego Yacht Club

EYC 2017 at OYC!

This past weekend, the 2017 EYC Regatta scheduled for Henderson Harbor was cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances caused by the high water levels on Lake Ontario.

Last night, the OYC Executive Board stepped up and committed to saving this year’s regatta by hosting it at our club.

Our first organizational meeting will be Thursday 6/15 at the club at 6PM. Come on down and join us and see how you can help. This is exciting for us and is a real strong move to show that we are open for business and able to pull this off on such short notice.

The EYC Regatta is scheduled for July 13-15. As you can see, we have some work to do to make this happen. We have faith in our club and our members and believe we can get this done and put on another first class regatta. We NEED membership participation and volunteer effort to make it happen. We need everyone’s help. This is a great for New Members to make new friends and get involved!

Here is a brief history of the Regatta and why we felt we couldn’t let it be cancelled.

Eastern Yachting Circuit History

The Eastern Yachting Circuit (EYC) is an International association of yacht clubs on the eastern end of Lake Ontario. The member clubs in the United States are Sodus Bay YC, Fair Haven YC, Oswego YC, Selkirk YC, Henderson Harbor YC, Crescent YC (Chaumont, NY) . Clubs from Canada are Brockville YC, Kingston YC, Collins Bay YC, Prince Edward YC (Picton, Ont), CFB Trenton YC and Bay of Quinte YC (Bellville, Ont).

The association was formed in the 1920’s as an opportunity for sailboat racing on the eastern end of the lake. In those days, most regattas were staged at the Western end of the lake making participation difficult for eastern clubs because of the sailing distance and time associated with traveling to the regattas. Smaller clubs on the east end decided to create the EYC regatta which is held annually at one of the member clubs. The regatta moves from club to club and usually is in Canadian waters one year and moves back to the United States the next year.

The EYC regatta has established a great camaraderie between clubs and racing teams with many skippers and crews participating for twenty to thirty years. Moving from club to club allows sailors to visit all the member clubs in a short span of time.

Be sure to communicate with Executive Board Members and other Members of the Club to find out how you can help.

Watch for more news about this exciting Event!

  • A New Documentary About Russia's Invasion of Ukraine Has the Film Festival Circuit Up in Arms

eastern yachting circuit

Documentaries about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine are nothing new. PBS , Sean Penn and the BBC have all produced substantive films in the first 2½ years of the conflict. There aren’t, however, a lot of substantive films about the war from the Russian point of view -- until now.

Many pro-Ukraine westerners ( but not all ) are quick to denounce Russian-Canadian documentarian Anastasia Trofimova’s new film “Russians at War,” which is currently making its way around the film festival circuit, as Russian propaganda. Trofimova, who is based in Toronto, embedded with a Russian battalion for seven months in Eastern Ukraine during the 2022 invasion. The film’s premiere at the prestigious Venice Film Festival sparked outrage ; now, hundreds of Ukrainians have taken to the streets of Toronto in protest.

The film’s official description is a “first-person documentary [that] takes us beyond the headlines to join Russian soldiers in Ukraine placing themselves in a battle for reasons that become only more obscure with each grueling day.”

Trofimova found her way to the front lines of the war through a friend named Ilya, whom she met during the New Year’s holiday at the end of 2021. Ilya was Ukrainian, but had moved to Moscow before the war began and became a soldier for Russia two months later as Vladimir Putin’s forces pushed across the border. He learned Trofimova wanted to make a film about the invasion and invited her to join his battalion. She embedded with his unit without authorization or press credentials.

“Russians at War” starts more than 111 miles behind the front lines of the fighting, where units are “ replenished ” before going back out to the front lines. We meet Russians who joined the military for reasons such as patriotism, vengeance or a consistent paycheck. What the film is careful to point out is that the Russian soldiers aren’t always granted what they signed on for: The “special military operation” is not exactly what they were led to believe, many don’t know exactly why they’re fighting and some aren’t even getting paid. What the film doesn’t show (or even acknowledge) are the myriad war crimes attributed to Russian troops at the time. The Russian soldiers simply dismiss those reports as “impossible.”

Trofimova is a former documentary producer for RT, a Moscow-funded news network, which adds to the perception that her film is pro-Kremlin propaganda. The filmmaker disagrees with that assessment and believes most of the negative press surrounding “Russians at War” comes from critics who haven’t watched the movie. In addition, she argues that her status as a Russian citizen and former RT journalist would have prevented her from making a documentary about both sides of the conflict, because she would have been labeled a spy.

"The suggestion that our film is propaganda is ludicrous given that I'm now at risk of criminal prosecution in Russia," Trofimova said in a recent statement to Agence France-Presse . "I unequivocally believe that Russia's invasion on Ukraine was unjustified, illegal and acknowledge the validity of the International Criminal Court investigation of war crimes in Ukraine."

“Russians at War” was funded with the help of grants from Canadian public broadcaster TVO, which has since decided not to air the film after the public backlash in Toronto. The Toronto International Film Festival had to temporarily halt screenings of the film , citing threats to public safety. Viewings of the movie have since resumed, but the accusations that the film is part of a Kremlin information campaign have never stopped.

"I would appreciate everyone who is leveling these accusations to first of all see the film because, from what I understand, none of the protesters that we saw has seen the film," Trofimova told CBC .
