Boat: 1973 Easterly 36
our 29 about 6-7 weeks ago I've been loosing sleep and weight (which I could stand to). I've been trying to figure out what we wanted for the next and we finally settled on one that is close to home. Of course like everything I buy it needs a little ... . It also has an integral lead , and kind of weird hard chines in the middle sections of the . The hard chines give it more space below than many 38ft we've looked at. It has a fairly conventional spreader . The is about 11ft long and HUGE compared to our 29.

Down below it reminds me of the the 1970's Winnebago my grandparents had when I was a kid. That being said not too many have over 6'6" standing room!!! A huge plus for me at 6'2, I was getting tired of hitting my in our old .

So it has that and a rotten bulkhead to on. So a little , work, and I'm planning on installing some left over strand bamboo hard from our house . I'm thinking some strips of maple or similar light in between the darker bamboo boards for that and holly affect.

So I'm excited, and nervous. Excited to get it in the and see how it , see how it rides and handles waves ect, to hear the pur to life that first time. I'm nervous because it's BIG! I'm going to have to work on my skills. With the 29 you could just push it around if you got off course while . I'm thinking it will be a little harder to do with this boat!

great! With the hard chines it is a very stiff boat and stands up well in a breeze. It has a nice comfortable motion in the 8-9ft Lake Michigan waves I've been out in. I sail it regularly with full main and up in 20-25knts. While doing this I've hit 9knts steady even when pushing it like this I can steer with two fingers on the at any time. I couldn't be happier with how she performs. Even with her old baggy sails we placed middle of the pack in our cross lake 68mi the Lake Michigan Clipper Cup. So on the rare occasion that someone is looking to buy one of these hard to find Easterly 36/38 do so with confidence in their sailing capabilities.

. Easterlys came in three sizes, 30, 36, and 38. The 30 was a take off of the Gulf One, a wooden boat, which was very popular on the with the crowd. All of their boats had the hard chine design.

There are still a number of 30's around and we still come across a 36 or 38 now an then. The 38 is a 36 with a reverse transom.

We are also friends with Donnie Brennan, who was very young in those days. Donnie is 10th in the world in Sunfish rankings and was also Shipwright for the American Team at the . A sailing for sure, from builders to sailers, hands on people. Donnie still works on sailboats and is owner of Diversified , in Mobile.

Easterlys were well respected boats in their day and were apparently very well built.

unfinished, and some were finished by the Brennans.

I've just gotten done putting it away for the after our second season. I had fun with friends sailing to Chicago for the America's Cup there this summer. I also did my usual cross Lake in the Clipper Cup. I didn't place too bad this year either. Middle of the pack with 30+ year old sails! lol. I would've had second had I not had to do a mid race . So looking for a newer suite of sails for her now and a folding or feathering prop to pick up her speed. I've been debating whether to have the phrf re-certified. Ive been racing with the original phrf of 153 from 1973. I'm thinking maybe the formulas have changed a bit since then, and I might be more competitive with a updated rating.

Hot water Sails Lazy jacks Clean fuel tank and new fuel filters, she runs great, sails and motors well 2 heads Galley with refrigeration

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Boat Vehicle Sailboat Watercraft Sloop

A few years ago our dock mate had one and he loved it. He took me out when it was blowing 20+ and the thing stood straight up, only one reef in the mail. My boat would have been all over the place. It seemed strong and well built it was a late 70's boat. I liked the ship feel down below with all the teak. Any way that was my .02 worth good luck. Brad Lancer 36

I own one. Not many were built. And most all of them were built slightly definitely. But solid haul and build. Old boats are old boats though. I have done a few modifications/rebuilds to mine.

  5. Review of Easterly 36

The Easterly 36 is equipped with a fin keel. The fin keel is the most common keel and provides splendid manoeuvrability. The downside is that it has less directional stability than a long keel. The boat can enter most marinas as the draft is just about 1.62 - 1.72 meter (5.31 - 5.61 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.
