Brand History

Resourceful, ingenious, and committed to time-honored traditions of excellence, the history of the Cheoy Lee is as varied and fascinating as the country from which we come. Cheoy Lee dates back to a humble beginning in 1870 at a building and repair yard for steam-powered craft at Po Tung Point in Shanghai. By the mid-1960’s, 90% of Cheoy Lee production was pleasure craft, primarily for the American market, although the commercial craft division of Cheoy Lee also continued to grow. Cheoy Lee continues to allow the balance of commercial and yacht production to follow market demand, adding considerable stability to the company as a whole.

Constantly improving product, Cheoy Lee advanced fiberglass technology to become a forerunner in the marine use of GRP/foam sandwich construction. In 1977 Cheoy Lee built the world's largest molded GRP yacht of its time, the 130' Motorsailer Shango II, and by 1979 the first all foam cored production motoryacht came on line; the Cheoy Lee 48’ Sport Yacht. This model went on to break through in the commercial sector as well, seeing service as a series of patrol boats in Australia, technologically superior and clearly outperforming rival builders at the time.

Cheoy Lee continues to be managed by members of the Lo family. The shipyard's new and sophisticated production facility on the Pearl River in Southern China is now the powerhouse of Cheoy Lee production. And as for almost a century, Cheoy Lee maintains a smaller yard and head office for operations on the Kowloon peninsula in Hong Kong.

History of Cheoy Lee Yachts

Cheoy Lee is a notable player in the boat manufacturing industry with a rich history dating back to its inception in 1870. Founded by the Lo family as a building and repair yard for steam-powered crafts in Shanghai, China, Cheoy Lee saw significant growth and transformation over the decades. Initially, the company made teak ships for the local market, but with the advent of modern materials and technologies, it expanded its production line to include steel and then, aluminium and fibreglass boats. In 1936, the industrial turmoil brought about by the Sino-Japanese war compelled the Lo family to move their shipyard to British occupied Hong Kong where they continued to produce commercial, residential, and later, luxury and pleasure boats.

In 1960s, Cheoy Lee shifted its focus to building high-end, luxury yachts, a move that played a pivotal role in establishing the brand in the global yacht market. The company embraced the use of fibreglass, which was a novel material in boat building during that era, and started producing sailboats and motoryachts aimed at the western market. To streamline the design and manufacturing process, Cheoy Lee collaborated with reputable naval architects such as Davis, Norlin and Robb, and established itself as a trendsetter in the boat manufacturing industry.

Currently, Cheoy Lee is headquartered in Doumen, China, maintaining a 65-acre site which houses state-of-the-art production facilities. The company markets a diverse range of boats — from sports motor yachts to exploration yachts to commercial tugs and ferries. Boasting over 150 years in the ship-building business, Cheoy Lee continues to thrive, pushing the boundaries of innovation and quality while keeping the tradition and heritage that the company is built upon.

Cheoy Lee, meaning “profitable” and “well-run” in Chinese, is a shipyard located on the Pearl River in Doumen, southern China. Perhaps one of the most diversified shipyards, Cheoy Lee builds vessels in an unusually broad range of materials: steel, aluminum, fiberglass, and carbon composite. As per their heritage, Cheoy Lee shipyards is committed to time-honored traditions of excellence and their greatest strength derives from the shipyard’s capabilities in engineering. With over 5,000 hulls built in the past 70 years, the depth of their experience covers motor sailers, trawlers, sport fishermen, motor yachts, and mega yachts; but also tugs, ferries, supply vessels and patrol boats. Cheoy Lee’s largest market is the USA and is best known for their 61foot / 19meter to 106foot / 32meter motor yachts.

Cheoy Lee began by the Lo family, as a building and repair yard for steam-powered craft at Po Tung Point, Shanghai in 1870. In 1936 the family business moved to the British colony of Hong Kong. Initially specializing in the production of powered cargo vessels to outrun the Japanese blockade, by the mid-1950’s Cheoy Lee had diversified into the production of teak sailing and motor yachts, mostly built for export to the USA and for British expatriates in what was then the British colony of Hong Kong. Many teak sailboats designed by Arthur Robb and other notable designers of the era, are still sailing today. Cheoy Lee was one of the pioneers in the use of fiberglass yacht construction in the early 1960’s, which began to replace the traditional teak motor and sail boats that the company produced at that time. By the mid 1960’s, 90% of Cheoy Lee production was pleasure craft, primarily for the American market, although the commercial craft division also continued to grow. In the early 1960’s Cheoy Lee established the Panny’s Bay site on Lantau island, at the western end of Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbor, while maintaining a smaller yard and head office in Kowloon. As one of the pioneers in the development, testing and use of fiberglass construction techniques, Cheoy Lee phased out wood construction soon thereafter.

They advanced in fiberglass technology to become a forerunner in the marine use of GRP/foam sandwich construction. In 1977 Cheoy Lee built the world’s largest molded GRP yacht of its time, the 130foot / 40meter motorsailer, Shango II, and by 1979 the first all foam cored production motor yacht came on line, the Cheoy Lee 48foot / 15meter Sport Yacht. This model also became the series of patrol boats in Australia.

Other than on a strictly custom basis, Cheoy Lee stopped building sailing yachts in 1990 to concentrate on large Motor Yachts. Because the USA is the largest pleasure craft consumer for Cheoy Lee, in 1995, they opened an office in Fort Lauderdale. In 1999, Cheoy Lee moved from their long term Lantau Island production site (now the site of Disneyland Honk Kong Resort) to a new and sophisticated facility on the Pearl River in Southern China, while still maintaining the smaller yard and head office operations on the Kowloon peninsula in Hong Kong. Since then the Pearl River facility has seen three major expansions, and is now more than twice its original size. The 28acre facility includes a 1,000ton railway lift and a 150ton Travelift. Cheoy Lee continues to be managed by members of the Lo family, 4th and 5th generation descendants of their forefathers in Shanghai. Capable of producing vessels in excess of 200 feet, the new yard promises to keep Cheoy Lee in the forefront of shipbuilding for generations to come.

Cheoy Lee is one of the few yards in the world to routinely build in steel, fiberglass, aluminum and various combinations of these materials, for both pleasure and commercial applications. An example of this is the 147foot / 45meter motor yacht Marco Polo that has a steel hull, a fiberglass composite superstructure and carbon fiber beams and girders. Cheoy Lee builds to globally recognized standards, regulations and major classification societies including Lloyds, ABS, Bureau Veritas, DNV, RINA, and CCS, and the company complies with recommendations of the American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC).

When familiar with the yacht market, one would most definitely have heard of the fine build, Cheoy Lee, but there are many interesting facts that may not have come up when walking the docks at the many boat shows about this luxury builder. At present, Cheoy Lee, a world-renowned builder of luxury yachts and super yachts up to 60 meters, are based in Doumen in Southern China with a second shipyard in the Howloon Peninsula in Hong Kong.

How did it all begin and where? Travel back in time to the year 1870 and imagine stepping into the magical Shanghai and you’ll find Cheoy Lee’s first shipyard. A yacht wasn’t the focus here though… this yard was building and repairing steam-powered vessels. The founding family (still the same family today) came much later in 1936 and relocated the shipyard to Hong Kong where power cargo vessels were birthed with the purpose of out-running the Japanese blockade. It wasn’t until the mid-1950s, that anything that resembled a sailing or motor yacht was created there but what a welcome surprise was had by all when they showed their first teak sailing and motor yachts. They brought aboard top naval architects for this feat. And a successful one it was at that as it grew so that luxury yachts grew to be approximately 90 percent of the shipyard’s production.

The commercial sect didn’t suffer from a loss as Cheoy Lee continued to build large commercial vessels and to this day is still pumping them out too! The focus continued to remain on this trail-blazing manufacturer come the 1960s and 70s when Cheoy Lee won the applause of the yachting industry by pioneering the use of GRP construction technology. With that, in 1977, they launched the motorsailer Shango II – the largest composite yacht of it’s time measuring in at, then, a whopping 39.62 meters. Then came another surprise to the yachting corner of the world —the first all-foam-cored production yacht named the Cheoy Lee 48’ Sport Yacht!

The year 1999, Cheoy Lee continued to shine a bright light with a new facility that would allow them the fabulous ability to build luxury yachts and ships up to 60 meters in length. Their choice to base this revolutionary shipyard was on the Pearl River in Doumen.

Marco Polo won the attention of many In 2007 as Cheoy Lee’s 44.8-meter oceangoing Explorer Yacht worked up by Ron Holland and featuring completely new power – a single Caterpillar diesel engine combined with a Schottel vectoring bow thruster. Her maximum speed clocked in at 14.5 knots. With impressive fuel efficiency and a fabulous range of 6,000 nautical miles at 10.5 knots. Mazu, was born after Marco Polo and was all the rage with its custom interior.

When looking for versatility in a builder, Cheoy Lee reaches the mark as they offer a few semi-custom luxury yacht series. With customers being given the opportunity to choose from either the Alpha performance yacht range, Bravo raised pilothouse motor yacht range, Serenity luxury cruising yacht range and the Explorer superyacht series, there’s always a match made in heaven in this paradise for any yachtsmen. Impressive choices of steel, aluminum, composite and combinations of these materials are made available to each owner.

Accommodation

• Built by Cheoy Lee Yachts with naval architecture from Tom Fexas, 27m/90ft vessel was launched in 2006 and last refitted in 2017. Her plentiful accommodations, speed and shallow draft make her an ideal vessel to cruise the islands. Accommodation sleeps a maximum of ten guests over five cabins.
• Additional systems and features that are noteworthy are the upgraded appliances throughout, teak decks on the main deck and under the hard top on the flybridge, varnished teak cap rails, underwater lights. Northern Lights port generator new in 2021.

ACCOMMODATIONS:

• The lower deck hosts the guest accommodations, which consists of a Master suite, a double cabin and a twin cabin that can be converted to a double midship, and two double cabins forward, one which can be used as the captain’s cabin.
• Forward VIP with centerline queen and separate head & shower.
• Forward double berth with en-suite bathroom which can be used as a Captain’s cabin as well.
• Port side queen with separate head & shower.
• Starboard side by side single berths w/ separate head & shower.
• Master stateroom amidships with en-suite bathroom.
• Access to her is via large the swim platform or port or starboard gates when docking alongside. The aft deck provides an undercover entertainment area with a U-bench settee and teak table. This seats 8-10 guests for al fresco dining. To port is a wet bar and to starboard is a stairway accessing the fly bridge.
• Entry to the main saloon is through tempered glass double sliding doors. The salon has panoramic windows for abundant natural light and roman shades for privacy. There is an entertainment center to starboard in the aft corner. A settee and coffee table are to port. The formal dining area to port was created with columns and a custom dining buffet featuring curved overhead cabinets and granite counter tops. The granite matches the wet bar to starboard which has a Subzero wine cooler, fridge, and icemaker, and in wall glass storage. Granite flooring matching the buffet and bar top completes this area. Lighting in this area is controlled by a Lutron lighting system for easy one button control. A spiral staircase accessing the Master suite and two guest suites as well as the fly bridge is located just forward of the bar to starboard.
• Door to starboard provides entry to galley/pilothouse. The galley is to port with granite countertops and stainless-steel appliances. To starboard is the day head. Forward to port is a U-shaped settee with table. This area creates an informal dining spot with panoramic vistas while underway. A stairway to the second laundry and two guest staterooms is to port.

OWNER’S STATEROOM:

• The master suite is full beam amidship. There is a king size berth with storage drawers beneath. Walk-in closet with cedar lining on aft bulkhead, ample drawer space. There is a his-and-her bath with a vanity on her side with large glass enclosed shower between. 
• The helm station on the flybridge has full repeat electronics as in the pilothouse. This is a premier entertainment area. There are three Crown helm chairs, bench seating and table. All of this is under the removable hard top that can easily be removed to pass under low bridges.  Aft of this area are deck chairs for sunning. The boat deck holds a custom Novurania 430 DL w/ 90hp Yamaha outboard with tow package, lifting harness, custom arch and canvas cover, wet bar, JennAir grill & icemaker for entertainment.

CREW ACCOMMODATION:

• Access to two-person crew's quarters and engine room is through the transom door from the swim platform. Just inside the transom door is a storage area for scuba storage and tank filling. There is also a handheld shower. The crew's quarters have twin upper and lower berths, hanging locker, desk with two shelves, a stacked washer/dryer and a full head w/shower. Access to the engine room is forward of the crew area. One of the forward guest cabins can be used for the captain allowing for 3 crew.
