Justin Shaffer’s ORION claims victory in 2023 Transpac as fastest finisher

2023 transpacific yacht race results

Justin Shaffer’s MOD70 ORION crossed the finish line at Diamond Head as the first finisher in the 2023 Transpac on July 6 at 2:48 a.m. HST. Their elapsed time of 4 days 17 hours 48 minutes fell short of breaking the multihull course record of 4D 6H 32M set by H.L. Enloe’s ORMA 60 MIGHTY MERLOE in 2017.

Among both Multihulls and Monohulls, this is the 6th fastest elapsed time in the entire history of the race, first sailed in 1906. The ORION crew of six included Paul Allen, Hogan Beatie, Morgan Larson, Cam Lewis, Matt Noble and Justin Shaffer.

ORION’s sistership MASERATI MULTI 70 skippered by Giovanni Soldini was about 200 miles astern, with this team from Italy finishing at 8:55 a.m. HST for an elapsed time of 4 days 23 hours 55 minutes, the 8th fastest time in Transpac history.

2023 transpacific yacht race results

Both teams followed a strategy common to this year’s fleet: a North Pacific high pressure centered well north of its usual position allowed teams to closely follow the rhumb line for most of the race, thereby minimizing the distance to Hawaiʻi. Only in the last few days on the west side of the racecourse do the 15-20 knot breezes shift more to the east from the northeast, prompting teams to sail north of the rhumb line on starboard tack to stay in the best wind velocity before gybing to port to make their final approaches to Hawaiʻi.

These last 1000 miles to the finish have the champagne sailing conditions that Transpac is famous for: clear days and starlit nights of downwind sailing under spinnaker, with the occasional shift to gybe to reduce the distance to Diamond Head.

With the multihulls finished, participants focus on who will be the first monohull to cross the finish line. Bill McKinley’s Ker 46+ DENALI3 is a strong contender for this honor.

With 485 miles to go at 7 a.m. PDT and at boat speeds of 11-12 knots, this fast carbon race boat and it’s Michigan-based team who started a week ago in Ocean Navigator Division 4 will soon pass the three leading cruiser/racer teams of Tuesday starters in Boatswains Locker Division 7 who are sailing at a 2-3 knot slower pace. If DENALI3 continues at the current rate she could be at Diamond Head before dawn on Saturday.

Once these and all Transpac finishers arrive in Hawaiʻi, they are greeted with the warm hospitality of Aloha. More than 100 Hawaiʻi volunteers help make everyone feel welcomed and embraced on having completed one the ocean race.

2023 transpacific yacht race results

This hospitality and support takes many forms: the Race Committee who are 24/7 stationed at Diamond Head Lighthouse to witness finishes; the escort vessel that leads finishers from Diamond Head into the Ala Wai Harbor and to their assigned slip, day or night, sun or rain; those who process the boat’s paperwork formalities and inspection on entering Hawaiʻi; photographers who are on call 24/7 to take crew photos; and the volunteers who stay on watch at Transpac YC’s two-story headquarters known as “The Shack” positioned in the Ala Wai Marina where all questions from the teams and their fans can be answered.

There are also the many members and staff of the partner yacht clubs on Oʻahu- Hawaiʻi Yacht Club, Waikīkī Yacht Club and Kāneʻohe Yacht Club- that plan and execute the parties and award ceremonies; those that organize and take care of the dozens of amazing perpetual trophies that are an important part of Transpac history – and determine who is eligible to win these awards; and finally those that organize each team’s Aloha parties to welcome crew members back.

All entries in Transpac can be tracked on the YB system, sponsored by Pasha Hawaiʻi. The positions, speeds and headings of each entry can be found on this system on either the browser of app versions. There is a built-in 4 hour delay for each entry, except when within 200 miles of the finish when the tracker goes live.

Second wave of racers heads to Hawaii in 2023 Transpac yacht race

On Thursday morning, the second wave of yachts departed from Los Angeles, California, inbound...

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - On Thursday morning, the second wave of yachts departed from Los Angeles, Calif., inbound to Hawaii for the 2023 Transpac race.

After they pass the West End of Catalina Island, clearing the first 25 miles of the race, they will traverse through the open Pacific Ocean.

Transpac officials say that navigators will need to strategize against winds in the Pacific High, which are notorious for sending ships adrift if they sail too north. Officials are unsure whether the winds will be strong enough this year to threaten any course records.

Among the second fleet of competitors are two father-son pairs. The sons are the youngest sailors of the competition.

Nicolas Messano, 13, and Oliver Ernest, 15, teamed up with their fathers to crew the Santa Cruz 50 DECEPTION and the J/145 AIMANT DE FILLE, respectively.

Other competitors are using the yacht race as an opportunity to promote environmental issues. Russ Johnson and John Turner, of the 52.2 BLUE MOON, sail in the race to raise awareness of ocean pollution.

“On the return trips, I do research in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch for different organizations, and I have my own non-profit called OPDERA: Ocean Plastic Debris Education Research and Awareness,” Johnson said.

Beginning Saturday, Transpac will announce the fastest boats of the second fleet and will interview navigator’s views on the new forecasts.

Grunion sports, grunion sports | on the water: here’s an update on the transpac race to hawaii.

2023 transpacific yacht race results

Yet, five boats had already dropped out of the Transpacific race to Hawaii as of deadline — and one never even started.

Larchmont Yacht Club’ s entry, Jason Carroll and his MOD 70 Argo, retired with engine issues. Malilia, a Hylas 63, retired because of a shroud issue. SAM returned home after Jerome Sam Marcelli was airlifted off the vessel because of a finger injury and Ben Kaliwoda returned the Carbon 32 singlehanded. Insoumise’s rudder housing broke, forcing that vessel to retire. And Glass Slipper out of Berkeley Yacht Club, never even made it to the starting line.

But then Steve George’s Shadowfax experienced a damaged masthead and started limping its way back to the Alamitos Bay Yacht Club. That one really hit home.

Steve George's Shadowfax experienced a damaged masthead during the 2023 Transpacific Yacht Race, forcing the crew, shown here, to turn the vessel around and head back to the Alamitos Bay Yacht Club. (Photo courtesy of Julie Green-King)

I sat with the Shadowfax crew, wives and girlfriends during the June 24 sendoff party on the USS Iowa , in San Pedro. The crew features a great mix of experienced racers and those for whom Transpac was a bucket list item.

“They are all amazing. This crew was incredible.  They’re eating well,” Julie Green King, whose husband, John, was on board Shadowfax, texted me as the vessel made its way home. “After the initial sad shock of it all, they appear to have come to terms with it — everyone is resolved to go to Hawaii. All the gals have booked their guys a flight except bowman Zach Miller, who has to get back to work.”

During the send-off, Zach told me he had never been to Hawaii.

The airlines were helpful as the shore crew worked to get the Shadowfax team to Honolulu, Julie said. After flights were booked, the wives, girlfriends, adult children and sailing pals started planning a Long Beach greeting on the same level Shadowfax would have received in Hawaii. So as the boat entered Alamitos Bay early in the morning on Tuesday, July 4, when, mai tais were being mixed and the crew was welcomed to their dock at ABYC.

“They were poised to be on the podium, such a bummer,” Julie texted me “They will be in Hawaii to congratulate the victors.”

I watched the third and final start of the 2023 Transpac on Saturday, July 1, on board Seal Beach residents Rick and Christi Von Heydenreich’s yacht, dubbed Boat Hair.

Rick, who is the port captain of the Transpacific Yacht Club is a veteran of the ocean race and he serves as one of the volunteer boat inspectors for the regatta. Rick had spent the last couple of weeks delivering a boat in some gnarly weather, before flying back to Los Angeles International Airport on Friday night. On Saturday morning, he was there ready to take 10 of us to watch the start.

After getting off the start line and around the west end of Catalina Island, most tacked to port and headed northwest. Unfortunately, most got stuck for hours in light and drifting conditions among the outer Channel Islands.

Heather and Chuck Furey’s Santa Cruz 70 Mirage, with navigator Ray Marchetta, reported, according to the TransPac media team, that their crew “fended off a sea lion looking for a resting place, marine mammal presumed we were another rock.”

They also reported that only Manouch Mosheyedi’s Bakewell-White 100 RIO100 and George Hershman and Mark Comings’ Reichel/Pugh 63 Good Energy — with two-time ABYC Staff Commodore Chuck Clay at the helm — were able to break away to the southwest and are progressing on a southerly track at speeds of 10 and 8 knots, respectively.

At the last look of the tracker, Long Beach Yacht Club’s Doug Baker and his Dencho/Kernan Peligroso (with fan favorites Benjamin Wheatley and Dustin Durant on board) have started to lead the rest of the group out of slatting conditions and into a more decent breeze.

All entries in Transpac can be tracked on the “Yellow Brick” system, including positions, speeds and headings. There is a built-in four-hour delay for each entry, except when within 200 miles of the finish, when the tracker goes live. A former captain of the Bayesian has described the terrifying obstacles facing those trapped in the cabins as the Bayesian superyacht overturned killing seven.

Stephen Edwards, who captained the Bayesian for five years until 2020, told The Telegraph : “Those who stayed curled up in bed were in the worst situation.

“The storm hit hard, placing them in the melee of flying furniture, glass and other items,” he said adding he had spoken to traumatised crew members.

“Inside the cabins, the only way to think of this is that people were lying in their beds one minute, and the next the room was on its side, totally dark, with the door now either in the floor or in the ceiling above.”

It came as divers race to retrieve Mike Lynch’s personal hard drives locked in a safe on the ocean floor, according to reports.

Italian newspaper la Repubblica reported that the tech billionaire, whose clients included MI5, the NSA and the Israeli secret service, didn’t trust confidential documents on the cloud and kept two encrypted hard drives in a safe which now lies 49 metres below sea level.

Divers hunting for clues on how Mike Lynch’s superyacht sank make discovery

Former captain says surviving crewmembers all have PTSD from sinking

The former captain of the Bayesian superyacht says he has spoken to all of the surviving crew to hear their account of the sinking.

Stephen Edwards said all the crew members who were on deck rescued as many passengers as they could but that heading down towards the flooded lower parts of the yacht “would have meant certain death”.

The former captain told The Telegraph: “They are not doing very well”

“The dominant feeling is still one of shock from the event. They are dealing with what happened, how it happened and how quickly it happened.”

Bayesian yacht sinking: Banking boss among four victims who ‘suffocated in cabin air bubble’

Four of the victims of last month’s Bayesian yacht disaster died after oxygen ran out in an air bubble on the sunken vessel, it has been reported.

Autopsies over the past few days on four of those who died have revealed an absence of water in their lungs, suggesting they suffocated as the air became saturated with carbon dioxide, Italian publication La Repubblica said.

The outlet reported post-mortems showed four people died from “atypical drowning”, with “no water in their lungs, trachea and stomach”. There were no signs of external injuries.

HP looking to recoup £4billion from Mike Lynch’s estate despite Bayesian tragedy

Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) is making the “difficult decision” to pursue Mike Lynch’s estate for £4billion in the interests of shareholders despite the tech billionaire being killed along with his daughter on the Bayesian superyacht.

Antonio Neri, the former engineer turned chief executive at HPE, told the Financial Times : “Obviously my job as a representative of shareholders is to make the difficult decisions.

“These are difficult decisions. But in the end, we are making decisions in the best interest of shareholders.”

Mike Lynch had been celebrating his acquittal from criminal charges on the superyacht when it overturned in a freak storm.

But HPE intends to pursue damages around an earlier UK civil trial in 2022 which found in favor of HPE’s claim that Lynch and ex-CFO Sushovan Hussain had inflated the apparent value of Autonomy during the acquisition.

Seven people lost their lives in the sinking of a luxury yacht off the coast of Sicily

Bayesian captain said to be ‘living darkest days of his life'

Three crew members including the yacht’s captain are under investigation, with plans being discussed to raise the yacht from the ocean bed to assist enquiries.

Sources close to New Zealander James Cutfield, 51, the captain , told the Italian newspaper Corriere Della Sera that he is living through the darkest days of his life.

Among those killed were Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, who had been due to begin studying at Oxford University in September, the yacht’s chef and four other family friends and associates.

Seven key unanswered questions around the sinking of the Bayesian

With the Bayesian lying on her side 50 metres underneath the now gentle waters of the Mediterranean, mystery still surrounds how the 56-metre superyacht, sank in the typhoon off the port of Porticello.

Remotely controlled underwater vehicles and cave divers are looking to raise the yacht .

Will answers to the sinking will rise to the surface with it?

The key unanswered questions around the tragic sinking of the Bayesian

With the search continuing of the sunken Bayesian an investigation has been launched to establish what caused the disaster off the coast of Sicily

Mike Lynch’s co-defendant died from head injury after being hit by car days before yacht sinking

Mike Lynch ’s co-defendant Stephen Chamberlain died in hospital three days after being hit by a car on a country road, an inquest heard.

The 52-year-old, from Longstanton in south Cambridgeshire, was struck by a blue Vauxhall Corsa travelling between Stretham and Wicken on the A1123 at about 10.10am on 17 August.

Mr Chamberlain, a former vice president of finance at Mike Lynch’s software firm Autonomy, had been out running at the time, his lawyer Gary Lincenberg said.

Coroner Caroline Jones told the inquest in Alconbury that his medical cause of death was recorded as “traumatic head injury”.

Mike Lynch ‘likely died of suffocation’ after running out of oxygen on sunken yacht

British tech tycoon Mike Lynch is likely to have died of suffocation after running out of oxygen, according to a source close to the investigation.

They cited initial examinations carried out on Saturday after the businessman’s body was recovered from the family yacht that sank off Sicily ’s coast last month during a freak weather incident.

Mr Lynch died alongside his 18-year-old daughter, the boat’s chef and four others , who were onboard the British-flagged superyacht Bayesian to celebrate his recent acquittal after a lengthy decade-long legal battle.

Initial results of examinations of Hannah Lynch’s body on Saturday were inconclusive, the source told the Reuters news agency.

Mike Lynch’s yacht was ‘unsinkable’, says boss of company who built boat

Giovanni Costantino, the chief executive of the Italian Sea Group, said there are no flaws with the design and construction of the Bayesian and it is “one of the safest boats in the world”.

The Bayesian, a 184-ft superyacht carrying 22 passengers and crew, was anchored off the port of Porticello, near Palermo, when it disappeared beneath the waves in a matter of minutes after a freak tornado struck.

“The ship sank because it took on water, from where investigators will have to say,” Mr Costantino told television news programme TG1.

He suggested that the sinking was down to a series of human errors.

The CEO said that had the crew shut all doors and hatches, turned on the engine, lifted the anchor, lowered the keel and turned the yacht to face the wind, they would have suffered “zero damage”.

He added that data showed it took 16 minutes from when the wind began for it to sink.

Cartoisio said the tragedy will be even more painful if the sinking was caused by “behaviours that were not aligned to the responsibilities that everyone needs to take in shipping”.

£4billion deal to purchase Mike Lynch’s Darktrace

Darktrace shares are set to stop trading publicly at the end of September, after the company set a timetable for its blockbuster private equity takeover to be completed.

The private equity group Thoma Bravo struck an almost 5.31 billion dollar (£4.3 billion) deal to buy Darktrace in April.

It marks one of the biggest take-private deals for a London-listed company in recent years, and will see Darktrace leave the FTSE 100 on October 1.

Founded in 2013, Cambridge-based Darktrace is a cybersecurity firm best known for using artificial intelligence to scan for hacks and data leaks inside IT networks.

A prominent company in the UK tech landscape, it was among the firms represented at the AI Safety Summit at Bletchley Park in November, where world leaders and major tech firms met to discuss the potential threat of artificial intelligence.

The update comes after Poppy Gustafsson stepped down as chief executive earlier in September amid the takeover.

Ms Gustafsson, who co-founded the business in 2013, will be replaced as chief executive by Jill Popelka, the company said.

Ms Gustafsson helped to set up the Cambridge-based company in 2013 alongside Autonomy founder Mike Lynch.

Mr Lynch, and his daughter Hannah, were among seven people to die after the Bayesian superyacht sank off the coast of Sicily last month.

Professor fears more deaths by ‘medicanes’ after Bayesian tragedy

Professor Yoav Yair, Dean of the School of Sustainability at Reichman University in Israel, told the Mirror that storms dubbed ‘medicanes’ - Mediterranean hurricanes - could cause similar sinkings like the Bayesian superyacht.

He said: “It is not a matter of if this (the Bayesian disaster) will happen again, but rather it’s when and where.

“In the last couple of years we have seen medicanes - which are a new phenomena. These are hurricane-like storms that pack a lot of energy, and create flash flooding, torrential rains, lightning, hail and severe sustained winds. The 2023 “Daniel” medicane destroyed Libya and caused over 30,000 deaths there.

“The sea surface temperature has risen globally and in the Med as well, charging the atmosphere with increased fluxes of water vapor, which means a higher potential for massive storms.”

The self-supported bike race across Europe

The Transcontinental Race (TCR) was founded in 2013 by the late Mike Hall, a giant of the ultra distance cycling scene. It is a single stage race across Europe where cyclists cover around 4000 km.

Self-supported

The foundational principle of all of our races. Find out what self reliance means to us and why it's such a powerful idea.

2023 transpacific yacht race results

The Control Points

Roubaix, france.

The 10th edition of the Transcontinental Race will start in Roubaix. Starting with a lap of the iconic velodrome, home to the fabled stories of Merckx, Moser, De Vlaeminck and Deignan, riders will head out across the pavé that is synonymous with the border between France and Belgium, before tackling the successive cobbled climbs of the Start Parcours.

With over a century of cycling folklore baked into the culture of the area, our riders will start to write their own stories of adventure, with the shores of the Bosphorus still a continent away.

2023 transpacific yacht race results

Vršič Pass, Slovenia

Heading southeast across the Alps, riders will arrive at CP1 in Slovenia, tackling the ferocious Mangartsko Sedlo. Built by Italian soldiers in 1938, the road takes in almost 1500 m of climbing in just over 10 km, with pitches of 17%. Riders will face the first significant challenge of the Race as they turn the pedals with tired legs to push to the top of the climb, which sits at over 2000 m of altitude. Passing through five tunnels hewn from the rough rock of the mountainside, riders will enjoy uninterrupted views of the Julian Alps at the summit.

2023 transpacific yacht race results

Bjelašnica, Bosnia

Situated southwest of Sarajevo, Bjelašnica — the highest peak in Bosnia, and host to the 1984 Winter Olympics — is the next destination that awaits our riders. While riders of TCRNo6 climbed up to the abandoned ski station that sits atop the mountain, riders of TCRNo10 will take on different tracks.

This will mark the first off-road section of the 10th edition of the Race, where riders’ kit choices will start to pay dividends if they have managed to correctly judge the balance of risk and reward. After conquering the rough gravel that characterises the unpaved roads of the region, riders will descend through the beautiful valley towards Odžaci along narrow passes that hug the mountainside and through dense farmland alive with the sounds of livestock.

2023 transpacific yacht race results

Prevallë, Kosovo

In its 10th edition, the Transcontinental Race will visit Kosovo for the first time, with Prevallë playing host to CP3. A popular skiing destination, the town lies near the border of North Macedonia in the Šar Mountains National Park, an area with 30 peaks higher than 2500 m of altitude.

Bordering the Kosovo Plain to the northeast and the Metohija Valley in the northwest, the region will see riders enter unfamiliar terrain and experience a true taste of Balkan wilderness along the way. Home to the Balkan lynx, as well as wolves, bears and wild boar, this relatively untouched corner of the region will pose its own set of challenges. While the Race won’t be won here, it could certainly be lost.

2023 transpacific yacht race results

Çanakkale, Türkiye

The penultimate Control Point of TCRNo10 will be in Çanakkale, last used in the Race in 2016 during TCRNo4. Famous for the two castles on either side of the mouth of the Dardanelles Strait, the town was established as a key trade location in the 8th century by the Greeks, and its status as a key trading location was cemented during the Ottoman empire.

Riders will head south from here to the sparsely inhabited rural outskirts of the city. Characterised by rolling hills, dense forests, and agriculture, riders will have a taste of rural Türkiye in all its glory as they begin their journey towards the Finish line in Istanbul.

2023 transpacific yacht race results

Istanbul, Türkiye

The tenth edition of the Transcontinental Race will finish at the warm shores of the Bosphorus in Istanbul. Bridging continental and cultural divides, the city has long been understood as the point where East meets West. This will be the case too for our riders, who, after over 3700km from France to Türkiye will travel along the Black Sea coastline before dropping down into Istanbul to complete their journey.

With the possibility of physical replenishment with a trip to the hammam, and a chance to deepen the spiritual connection to their journey with a trip to the Blue Mosque, our riders will once again become whole after breaking their journey, and sometimes their mind, body and spirit, into parts for the previous 15 days.

Entries Rolling in for 2025 Transpac Race

Twenty boats and crews have already claimed their spot on the starting line for the 2025 Transpacific Yacht Race, including past first-place finishers Pyewacket , Roy Disney’s Andrews 70, and the Kernan 68  Peligroso , now skippered by Cecil Rossi, who won his division in 2023 racing the Farr 57  Ho’okolehe . So far, the scratch sheet is showing several veteran entries, boats with well-honed professional crew and many smaller amateur teams with shorter waterlines, such as Alli Bell’s Cal 40  Restless  and Stacy Sinclair’s Kelly Peterson  Rhiannon . It’s a hallmark of Transpac that the challenges inherent to a long-distance ocean race attract such a variety of sailors, from those looking to break speed records or personal bests, to those wanting to experience that comes from successfully crossing the Pacific in company with some of the best sailors in the world.

Transpac Adopts Rating System that Incorporates Weather

At their March meeting, the Transpacific Yacht Club (TPYC) Board of Directors adopted a rating system that incorporates weather predictions at the recommendation of the club’s technical committee following their analysis of previous race data . The 2025 Transpacific Yacht Race will employ Time-on-Time Forecast Time Correction Factor (F-TCF) ratings calculated from the polar performance data from each boat’s ORR certificate and weather predictions available on the morning of each start. Weather-adjusted ratings computed for each start day maximize the chances for each division to compete fairly against the entire fleet.
