Principles of yacht design, 5th edition.

By Jay Paris , Feb 7, 2023

Principles of Yacht Design, 5th Edition

The YD-40, top, with a more traditional keel, appears in the 3rd edition, while the contemporary YD-41, designed for the 4th edition, was built, sailed, and photographed for the 5th.

For decades, Principles of Yacht Design (PoYD) has been the gold standard for practitioners in this line of work. Now in its 5th edition , the book has grown from 352 pages to 400 and from $60 to $90 in retail price, although it can be ordered from Amazon for $64.99. Anyone considering purchasing the 5th edition should be aware that the preface and dust jacket imply it is wholly revised, which is not completely correct. For instance, the YD-41 design example was not developed for this new edition as stated. Rather it is a carryover from the 4th but was built, sailed, and photographed for the 5th. YD-41 is state of the art with its high-aspect-ratio fin keel and a torpedo bulb extending forward of the fin, and twin rudders consistent with the wide stern. It results in a modern hullform that is not very practical for sailing in waters with a high density of crab pots or lobster traps, which could result in snags or wraps. Those interested in designing a hull with a more traditional keel should acquire a copy of the 3rd edition, featuring the YD-40 with its moderate-aspect-ratio fin and a swept-back leading edge.

The increase of 48 pages in the new edition is primarily due to the 35-page chapter on foiling. On the subject of powerboat design, there is a new chapter titled High-Speed Hydrodynamics, which is limited to planing hullforms. For further inquiry into any of the topics, PoYD helpfully mentions numerous sources and offers a reference section at the end that lists the 96 works cited in this edition (up from 71 in the 4th edition), ranging from current studies back to the books of L. Francis Herreshoff and Frank Kinney. The authors are to be congratulated in expanding PoYD and keeping it up to date.

Principles of Yacht Design , by Lars Larsson, Rolf E. Eliasson, and Michal Orych. Adlard Coles, 400 pp., $90, ISBN: 978-1-4729-8192-9.

Four North American designers bringing a fresh perspective to yachting

From Miami to Toronto, stars from architecture, residential and commercial design are cutting their teeth in yachting. Rachel Ingram meets a few of these wave-makers redefining the landscape…

Carla Guilhem Design

Florida-based designer Carla Guilhem developed a passion for interior design while growing up in Brazil with her family, who owned a furniture business. She studied architecture and interior design and lived in Italy and Spain before settling in the US where she cut her teeth on residential projects in New York and the Hamptons. Guilhem founded her eponymous design studio in 2012, headquartering the business in Miami: “a nexus of cultural and design influences that resonate with my ethos.”

Her foray into yachting came through a client who asked her to design the interior of custom motor yacht Lady Lene . Her brief was to create a home at sea for three generations of the family, and in the end the yacht won the 2023 BOAT International Design & Innovation Award for Best Interior. The award was “a milestone that cemented our studio’s reputation in the industry,” she recalls.

The studio is currently engaged with several new yacht builds across Europe, most notably Project 111.11 , a “ground-breaking” 34.1-metre yacht under construction at the Van der Valk Shipyard in the Netherlands. “The interiors are crafted to transcend our current understanding of forms and spaces,” Guilhem says.

“Combining classic and futuristic lines,  the design immerses the owner and his guests in a sensation of outer space, integrating imaginary organic forms throughout. Flowing curves and seamless transitions create an otherworldly experience that harmonises with the natural elements of the sea. A monochrome and earthy colour palette further enhances the celestial ambience.”

Guilhem claims not to adhere to a specific signature style, believing that the studio’s USP is its ability to “draw out and integrate our clients’ specific tastes into a design that is both timeless and deeply personal.” While each project is unique, she has observed a pivot toward designs filled with elements that serve a clear purpose, and for beauty that’s “matched with utility.”

She adds, “There is also a prevailing demand for creating interiors that serve as sanctuaries at sea. Our designs are increasingly focused on fostering this connection, creating environments that are restorative and peaceful.”

Bonesteel Trout Hall

California studio Bonesteel Trout Hall was founded 20 years ago by partners Heidi Bonesteel, Michele Trout and Jill Hall, all of whom were born and raised in the Golden State. From their offices in Pacific Palisades and Newport Beach, they offer “Southern California flair of laid-back glamour.”

The design leads are Bonesteel, who previously worked with builders and designers in Los Angeles, and Trout, who cut her teeth in hospitality and luxury hotels. The duo claims to have no signature design and instead choose to adopt a personal and versatile approach each time.

“We integrate our clients’ taste, respecting the architectural integrity of each property and ultimately, try to pioneer our clients into a modern realm beyond their wildest dreams,” they say. “This chameleon-like approach yields a diverse body of work, resulting in everything from a sprawling French Normandy manor rooted in tradition to an avant garde New York pied-à-terre apartment.”

The studio’s key focus is residential, but it recently dipped a toe into yachting, designing the interior of the 55-metre Amels Nomad . The owner, a repeat client, brought them on midway through the construction.

“We were eager to take on something completely new, working with the family to create something with function in mind but also transforming their idea of what a yacht could look like,” they say. “The family really wanted their yacht to represent their native California upbringing so we infused functional pieces with a contemporary yet casual California look. The hull colour, a vibrant royal blue, informed the colour palette — we used that as a jumping off point and brought in citrus yellow as a nod to their sunny southern California lifestyle.”

Their go-to brands include Christian Liaigre Furniture — “their pieces are timelessly contemporary with subtle nautical details” — and DEDON for outdoor furniture — “their work gives a highly modern look with an ergonomic comfort that no client can resist.” For Nomad , they also pulled pieces from Summit, citing the brand’s “highly functional” products with “classic California depth and comfort.”

The designers have seen trends in yacht and residential design merging. “Clients are pushing for organic forms, whether it’s nesting pebble coffee tables or curved sofas. Additionally, they’re looking for a more intentional and subtle use of colour. Clients want designers to celebrate the natural landscape rather than compete with it.”

Bonetti/Kozerski Architecture

New York City-based architecture and design firm Bonetti/Kozerski Architecture was founded at the turn of the millennium by Italian and British architects Enrico Bonetti and Dominic Kozerski. The pair met in the mid-1990s while working for American architect Peter Marino and quickly bonded. “We opened our own office in 2000 when we had the chance to design a large apartment for fashion designer Donna Karan,” Bonetti says. “Since then, we split our work between high-end residential and high-end retail, designing flagship stores for different brands.”

The studio, which has also worked on numerous hospitality projects, is renowned for its minimalist style. “Our goal is first of all to provide an extremely functional space and then to disguise such efficiency with an elegant and well-balanced design that will limit visual distractions and would create a natural rhythm through the spaces,” Bonetti says.

It’s this aesthetic that inspired Italian shipyard Benetti to grant the duo their first yacht project, the first yacht in the new Oasis series. “We were called by Giovanna Vitelli to provide an interior vision for a new line of yachts that was under development with RWD ,” Bonetti says. “We used our foreignness to the boat world as a plus, and we created what has been described as a fresher and calmer design that blurs the line between the interior and the exterior areas.”

The 40-metre Benetti Oasis 40M line received such a positive response that the studio was brought back to design a smaller version, the 34-metre Oasis 34M, which was equally successful.

As a yachting industry outsider looking in, Bonetti has noted an “overall improvement” in yacht design in recent years. “We notice in general that there are fewer interiors designed for a wow factor, which, as yacht designer Terence Disdale brilliantly said, is the fastest ageing element in any design. We notice clients asking us for spaces that can have multiple functions: this is something that we really enjoy working on.”

The studio always works with trusted suppliers for its yachts, many of them from the founders’ home countries, Italy and England. “We very often incorporate fabrics from the Italian company Dedar, for their quality and for the wide range of textures and colours,” Bonetti says. “We also like to specify our line of outdoor teak furniture from Sutherland Furniture.”

Over the past three decades, Toronto-based design firm Burdifilek has built a solid reputation in the fields of retail, hospitality and real estate. Praised for its design style of “quiet, understated elegance with a global and timeless appeal,” the studio now has its sights set on yachting.

“We are creators of an international style, transcending trends to blend a distinctive design vision,” creative partner Diego Burdi says. “Our design team is committed to excellence and craftsmanship, and working with highly skilled artisans is very important in our studio.”

Burdifilek’s first yacht project was the interior of the 60-metre Amels 60 Entourage , completed in 2023. The studio joined the project through an existing client, an experienced yacht owner who was able to guide them through the process.

“We were thrilled,” Burdi says. “Our studio started researching and exploring the yacht world. By doing so, we quickly understood the importance of the experience of yachting, and the contact one can have with the exterior environment and the sea. We knew the interior needed to be the background for the exterior experience.

“For us it was important to feel that we are on a yacht, so we made design decisions to embrace the marine language by complementing the shape and form of the yacht into the interior design. For example, the lower deck bedrooms have curved walls, and the bed follows the vessel’s hull.”

The colour scheme they selected complements the ocean. “A monochromatic palette frames the exterior, allowing full view of the reflective waters,” Burdi says. “Knowing that the client had a colourful art collection, we created a softer palette backdrop to accentuate their art collection. The whole interior is holistically coherent.”

Burdi insists the studio actively avoids trends. “To create unique environments, you need to go beyond the trends and push boundaries,” he says. “Typically, clients will discuss their programming but when it comes to design, they leave us to create with our own DNA.” This extends to their pick of suppliers, which changes with every project. “Our studio is constantly researching and exploring new talents.”

TYD38: the new issue is on the stage

At first it was just an idea. The kind that wanders around in the head without a precise destination. Then, the more time went by, the more it began to take substance until it became a real project. The result is a special over 100 pages dedicated to the America’s Cup. Of course the subject matter is vast and, indeed, lends itself to multiple interpretations. Ours went in the direction of shunning the already beaten and known routes. Rather, we have decided to focus on everything that has not yet been said about this event, or has not emerged sufficiently. We wanted to plumb its history and bring little-known stories to the surface. We X-rayed the new AC75s, those astonishing flying machines that will provide adrenalin-fuelled thrills both to the public and, above all, to the crews committed to pushing them hard to reach their goal. Yes, because the stakes this time are really high.

yd yacht design magazine

Such a special edition, topped off by Louis Vuitton’s comeback in a big way, has not been seen for a long time and more precisely since the Valencia years, which sold out in terms of participants. Perhaps, the fact that it will be held once again in Spain gives hope and also imagines the beginning of a new cycle destined to last. Also because, whether it is by chance or not, it is undeniable that the arrival of foils has given a significant boost to sailing and, above all, to yacht design. It has unleashed a creative energy that, in the not so distant future, will translate into innovative solutions whose effects will be felt in the way we experience the sea. In this sense, a first glimpse of what awaits us could be experienced by boarding the hydrogen-powered chase boats that will be part of the equipment of the six teams competing in the America’s Cup. To think that half of these are all Italian and bear the signature of the Bluegame yard that built those for American Magic and Orient-Express and Persico Marine that built the one for Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Team. Once again, Italy and in detail its nautical industry confirms itself as the engine of innovation. Nothing new. We have it in our DNA.

yd yacht design magazine

Just look at the history of Baglietto. The Ligurian shipyard’s 170 years are confirmation of this. This is the reason that prompted us to dedicate an in-depth article to the brand, whose symbol is a seagull with spread wings, highlighting its most significant stages. Just as significant in this issue are the presences of two personalities of the calibre of Pier Luigi Loro Piana and Michelangelo Pistoletto. Two names but also two readings that make this issue truly special.

Unveiling the Tiara Yachts EX 54: A Comprehensive Review

  • By Chris Caswell
  • August 30, 2024

Tiara Yachts EX 54

Tiara Yachts entered new territory with its EX 60 last year , and its EX 54 follows that same magic in a smaller package. Like the EX 60, the EX 54 has modular seating in the cockpit, allowing each owner to tailor the yacht to a specific mission.

My educated guess says that the Lounge module will be the most popular, with a pair of settees facing across a folding teak table. Not only does this setup make for great alfresco entertaining, but the aft settee also incorporates a sink, grill, fridge and optional ice maker across the transom.

The Adventure module has fishing written all over it, replacing the aft settee with more foot space and a console with five rod holders, tackle lockers, a cutting board and a sink.

The last module is the Glass Patio, which replaces the backrest of the aft settee with a laminated glass bulkhead so guests (and parents) can keep an eye on the watery action off the stern. I’d recommend the optional hydraulic platform (a 5-foot platform is standard) with steps descending into the water and built-in chocks to stow a tender. All the cockpit modules raise electrically to reveal a garage for water toys and gear.

Tiara Yachts EX 54

Like many powerboats these days, the Tiara EX 54 has foldout hullsides to create extended cockpit space, but Tiara goes further with flush-mounted boarding doors on each side. This design makes for easy step-aboard access while leaving nothing to stub toes with the sides folded down.

Forward of the seating modules and up two steps on the mezzanine level is an aft-facing table with twin hassocks (with stowage). Forward of that and to port, with an electrically disappearing window, a pair of stools create a salon-facing bar. The adjacent two-panel sliding doors can open the salon entirely to the cockpit.

In the salon, which has a Herculan teak sole, a convertible dinette to port forms a berth by lowering the high-gloss teak table. (It’s the same size as the one on the EX 60.) The galley is fitted out for cruising, with a two-burner Kenyon induction cooktop, cookware, a microwave/convection oven, a two-drawer fridge and a stainless-steel sink. Behind the galley countertop is a pop-up 43-inch TV that faces the lounge. The absence of overhead cabinets makes for a panoramic view, with stowage in drawers and lockers.

Tiara Yachts EX 54

Just forward, the skipper can use the sliding pilothouse door for easy side-deck access. This, along with a clever outboard sliding armrest on the Stidd double-wide helm seat, lets the skipper stand on the side deck and use the Volvo Penta joystick for docking. Overhead is a Webasto electric sunroof.

The dash is fitted with Volvo Penta’s Glass Cockpit, including two 22-inch Garmin GPSMap 8622 displays and a row of backlit buttons for systems. The equipment includes a Garmin autopilot, Fantom 54 radar, VHF radio and aft-facing cockpit camera.

Opposite the helm is a double-wide companion seat that, at the push of a button, slides aft so everyone can join in the action while running to the next waypoint. The seat also slides forward to create a U-shaped dinette. That companion seat has a console with an optional Garmin GPSMap 8622.

Tiara Yachts EX 54

Step down into the airy, bright atrium from salon level, and a door leads forward from the foyer to the VIP stateroom with a walk-around island queen berth. It lifts to reveal lighted stowage for suitcases. A door allows private access to the guest head—also off the foyer—with a VacuFlush head and stall shower. Across the foyer is a second stateroom, ideally for kids, with bunk berths.

The full-beam owner’s stateroom is aft with 6-foot-5-inch headroom and a queen-size pedestal berth. The EX 54 that I got aboard had the full bureau to starboard. (A settee is optional.) The space had 23 drawers for extended cruising, plus a cedar-lined hanging locker like the ones in the other staterooms. A GE washer-dryer was tucked away in the passageway to this stateroom, and the private head included a Lacava vessel sink, stowage and a stall shower.

Going forward on deck is made secure by solid coamings capped by stainless-steel rails. The bow area has a multiuse lounge with sun pads and a removable table. The all-chain windlass is tucked under a hatch, with a wired remote as well as helm controls. I liked the two walkways on each side of the windlass locker, allowing deck crew to look down securely on the anchor.

Tiara Yachts EX 54

Power for the EX 54 is twin Volvo Penta IPS2 950 diesels paired to pod drives, and the engine room is clearly arranged for service techs or hands-on owners. A five-step ladder leads down from the cockpit, and everything from the oil changers and seacocks to the 13.5 kW Onan genset is readily accessible.

Underway, the EX 54 is pure fun. We started our runs in smooth water on the Intracoastal Waterway, where I checked a 33.7-knot top speed and indulged in some doughnuts and swoops. I recorded just 70 decibels at full throttle with the sunroof open, making conversation easy. Once offshore, the yacht’s fine entry and 14-degree transom deadrise handled the lumpy Gulf Stream, throwing spray far to the side and providing a smooth, predictable, stable ride. I didn’t need handrails, but I did take note that Tiara has provided a plethora of them, often neatly concealed (next to the forward sun pad, for example).

Whether for entertaining, cruising with friends, fishing or simply enjoying the water, the Tiara Yachts EX 54 can be tailored to fit many owners’ ideas of fun.

This second-generation Volvo Penta diesel IPS2 950 pod-drive system punches out 750 hp, driving through a 1.7:1 gearbox with a jack shaft that allows the engines to sit closer to the center of the yacht. With Volvo’s P4 props, cruise speed was 26 knots for a range of about 300 nautical miles.

Built To Take It

The EX 54 has a no-wood hull. The yacht’s hull, deck and topsides are backed by closed-cell foam coring that provides strength as well as soundproofing. A fiberglass grid supports the engines and interior, adding strength and rigidity.

Garmin Glass Cockpit

Optimized for use with Volvo Penta power, this user-friendly interface combines navigation (a chart plotter, GPS, sonar and radar) with operations (engine data and multitouch systems screens). Preloaded with BlueChart G3 coastal charts, it provides detail to 1 foot with contours for fishing, as well as depth shading and shallow-water warnings.
