Southern Ocean Shipyard or SOS was at the forefront of building bluewater cruising yachts, in the UK, with their iconic range of Van de Stadt designs. The Ocean 71 was a superb sailing yacht. Great to look at, offering powerful sailing and fast passage times and with practical and comfortable accommodation. Her split rig made her easier to handle. These yachts have voyaged to all corners of our planet, taking families and charter guests far.

Ocean 71, OCEAN JOY has the advantage of a very experienced owner who rebuilt her in the UK in 1998 and again in 2016. She is in cosmetically great condition, but importantly her systems and mechanics have all been upgraded or replaced in this ownership.

She offers enormous potential for serious sailing and is in great operational condition. Whilst writing, we would like to thank Tim Wright for the use of the photographs in this specification.

Owner’s Comments

I have owned Ocean 71, OCEAN JOY as a family boat for 25 years. I rebuilt her in 1998 at Hamble, including new engine room and systems, new generator, exhaust systems with separators from Halyard Marine, Aquafresh water maker, bilge pumping, shaft, Aqua drive, Maxprop, Condaria reverse cycle air conditioning with handles in four cabins, completely new domestic plumbing, complete rewire of entire boat (by Datayacht, Lymington), new fresh water tanks, galley redesigned with new Force 10 cooker and new refrigeration, both masts rebuilt by original maker and leads rearranged on main mast to facilitate shorthanded sailing, new standing and running rigging and new sails, new anchor windlass and anchoring system to allow singlehanded anchoring and retrieval. New stainless steel stemhead fitting, pulpit, pushpit and all stanchions. New Andersen winches including 3 electric. Most systems were designed with redundancy in mind and for long distance cruising.

Over the years, I have continually maintained and upgraded OCEAN JOY and in 2015/2016 did a refit at Fox’s, Ipswich and at Southampton Yacht Services. Items included, hull osmosis treatment including re-laminating above and below waterline. Awlgrip paint on topsides and deck. New Tek-Tank water tanks, new main engine Perkins 6354, 115hp non turbo with probably less than 500 hours to date, all new Raymarine instruments, new standing rigging including rigging screws, 1×19 wire and all toggles, all new running rigging, new refrigeration, new Sanimarin electric heads plumbed for both fresh and seawater, new Spade main anchor. Steering overhauled by Whitlock engineer.

In my ownership OCEAN JOY has spent several winters cruising the Caribbean with summers in Maine and the US northeast. I think I have probably sailed her 12 times across the Atlantic, sometimes two handed but generally three handed. She is an exceptionally easy to sail, long legged and seakindly passage maker. I generally plan on covering 200 miles a day minimum with some days making 240 miles.

OCEAN JOY was built to Lloyds +100A1 with Lloyds machinery certificate. When I rebuilt her I maintained her in class. Around 2012 I allowed class to lapse because Lloyds new regulations relating to items such as watertight bulkheads were not practically possible to comply with.

Southern Ocean sailing yacht Too Elusive for sale

The 24.38 Southern Ocean sailing yacht Too Elusive has been jointly listed for sale by Luke Brown Yachts with All Ocean Yachts .

Built in GRP by British yard Southern Ocean to a design by Doug Peterson , she was delivered in 1985 as one of five Ocean 80 models. Her interior layout has been designed to comfortably accommodate up to seven guests overnight in three cabins and she is also capable of carrying up to four crew on board.

During winter 2012-2013 she had an extensive refit. She was fully repainted in flag blue Awlgrip, and a shoe was installed on the keel. Several mechanical upgrades were made, most significantly on her steering system and rudder bearings. Her aft cabin had a complete rebuild while most of the main saloon also was rebuilt, including crafting new overheads and replacing all the wood. A new nav station was built and installed with all-new electronics.

Additionally, her rigging was given a facelift with new paint on her main and mizzen masts while riggers replaced much of her running rigging and some of her standing rigging. Finally, she was outfitted with all new sails.

Her ketch rig makes her easy to sail in all conditions and allows her to be handled by a small crew. Under power, a single 240hp Yanmar diesel engine enables a cruising speed of 9 knots topping out at 10 knots.

The 30’ Chris Craft Catalina is the essence of quality and comfort. The Pilothouse design protects passengers from the elements while providing unobstructed views in every direction, and easy movement around the entire deck. Invite 12 aboard…there's room – and a view – for everyone.

Each Chris Craft is created by highly experienced designers at their factory in Sarasota, Florida, where they maintain tight control over every detail that defines their particular, very demanding set of standards. They specify only the highest quality materials, like hand-selected teak – to differentiate a Chris-Craft from every other boat on the market.

It’d be difficult to point out a more luxurious and comfortable center console boat in this size range.

The 30 Catalina cabin is not the utilitarian cuddy found aboard a lot of boats in this size range. It has a ceramic sink/shower and modern faucet, a berth (with electric toilet underneath) and a hanging locker. Wood doors and trim add a sense of elegance. All of this combined with Air Conditioning make her a great overnight or weekend capable cruisier.

This Catalina 30 has the unique “Pilothouse” Hard T-Top option. The hardtop matches both the soft curves of the Catalina’s hull and the interior design of the bow area.

The beefy, black-framed windshield is also aesthetically dynamic and provides a climate-controlled pocket for all types of weather. The summer Florida sun can make summertime hot, but air-conditioning vents keep the helm area as cool as inside. The helm space looks smart too, with matching helm and companion seats that are bucket-style chairs with flip-up bolsters with hand-stitched in diamond patterns with the Chris-Craft logo, as well as the large 16-inch Garmin touchscreen display, and a gloss finished wood wheel.

The area forward of the helm area opens up into a vast lounge area with a full chaise lounge forward of the console complete with arm rests and cup holders. The lounge area has the same hand-stitched in diamond patterns with the Chris-Craft logos. The bow area is fully cushioned with the wrap around bolsters.

The area aft of the helm is designed for groups, with fold-down seats and cushioned bolsters, the cockpit is also built for fishing, with an optional live well under the helm seat and rocket launchers integrated into the transom. The starboard-side door should make bringing the big ones into the cockpit that much easier. The 18-inch-wide side entry door also turns the boat into a diving platform with easy exit and entry. The door also makes it easier to hop on board from a dock. There is also an opening doorway to the transom area that opens to a beautiful teak walkway in front of the engine well making it very easy to move around.
