June 24, 2024

san diego yacht club junior sailing

For the first time since 1962, the INSA Junior Sabot Nationals are sailing back to San Diego Yacht Club , creating a historic and thrilling moment for the event! This exciting return brings a blend of tradition and competition, with a qualification series narrowing the championship to 120 boats and the return of the Cove Cup Consolation Regatta.

The deadline for the standard entry fee has been extended: competitors can register through June 30 at the discounted pricing. After June 30, registration fees will go up by $100.

This four-day event, to be held July 29-August 1, is anticipated to feature over 150 competitors from the top yacht clubs in Southern California. The races will be held in the scenic La Playa Turning Basin, located just west of SDYC. Spectators will have numerous viewing options around the race venue, offering parents and racers a breathtaking, stadium-style view of the course.

Beyond the exciting races, this event promises lively social activities and plenty of amenities for competitors and their families. Festivities kick off with a grand opening ceremony on Monday night, featuring many former champions. The fun continues with a regatta dinner, ice cream social, pool party, and more racing until a champion is crowned on the Historic Front Deck. Parents can enjoy a semi-private, quiet work area with high-speed Wi-Fi, an adults-only cocktail hour, and convenient on-site vendors for last-minute boat repairs and upgrades.

San Diego Youth Science - MBYC Marine Science Days

Mission Bay Yacht Club is an ideal playground to learn and perfect sailing skills, as well as explore and better understand the science and ecology of the marine habitat. To leverage this amazing opportunity, MBYC Juniors and San Diego Youth Science (SDYS) are partnering for the second summer to bring wonderful science experiences to the youth participating in the Junior Sailing Program.

What Sets San Diego Youth Science Apart? ● Authentic experiences and scientific discourse to engage youth in the process of science ● Utilization of local specimens, artifacts, and scientific equipment to enhance instruction ● All SDYS instructors hold degrees in science, have worked in various scientific fields, and are trained in the implementation of hands-on and experiential science instruction ● Custom curriculum developed to integrate local and current science phenomena ● Relevant student-driven experiences incorporating scientists and their research ● Research utilized from institutions such as Scripps (SIO), San Diego Zoo, San Diego Nat, NASA, Space X, Saildrone, National Marine Mammal Foundation, NOAA, etc. Programming

Invertebrate Exploration - Junior Sailors collect, examine, and sort living algae and marine invertebrates from the “fouling” habitat - attached to man-made substrates (ie.- docks and piers). Organisms like sea squirts, brittle stars, mussels, and even octopuses spend part or all of their   lifecycle in this unique habitat.

Gravity and Tides - Each day on the bay is unique, sometimes the water covers most of the beach while others expose eel grass beds. Junior Sailors discover the physics behind what causes tidal fluctuations, as they go out and about the Club to investigate animal and plant diversity   during low tides.

Engineering Challenge - Junior Sailors are challenged to design a cardboard boat that will transport them from the Junior Dock to the floating slide, and back. Collaborating in research teams, the Sailors will work through the engineering design process to brainstorm, design, build, test, evaluate, optimize design, rebuild, and test their prototype. Materials will include large cardboard boxes (refrigerator boxes) and tape. (Note: coaches will need to be helping with cutting, especially with younger sailors.)

Fish Diversity and Adaptations - Mission Bay is home to a wide range of fishes, with diverse adaptations to survive. Through hands-on exploration of the external anatomy of a variety of Mission Bay’s fishes, Junior sailors will determine how different species’ body shapes, finadaptations, and overall physiology are specific for each organism’s place in the habitat.

Setting Sail

The San Diego Yacht Club Sailing Foundation had its beginnings in the 1970s when members expressed interest in finding ways to provide increased support for the club’s mission and ensure its future. Frank Hope Jr., and Nick Frazee helped circulate those early ideas. In 1988, Paul Rayburn wrote to Gary Gould suggesting that the club establish a memorial to Ash Brown. Once again, the need for an organized group to handle such matters became evident, and in 1990, the Sailing Foundation was incorporated.

The original intent was to use donations to support the Junior Sailing Program founded by Joe Jessop in 1928. Jessop foresaw the club’s future in the development of young sailing enthusiasts. Not only has that vision been realized, but the program has grown in size and scope, offering opportunities for all youngsters in the community to participate, to experience the thrill of sailing, and to develop the skills and confidence that come with good seamanship and the Corinthian yachting tradition. In 1995, in order to ensure the club’s continued leadership and the expansion of its programs and outreach, members acted to restructure the Sailing Foundation. It was incorporated as a non-profit organization, the San Diego Yacht Club Sailing Foundation, under a designation that allows it to support a wide variety of activities through tax-deductible contributions.

Given this opportunity, pride in our history, and the support of caring members who want to share their love of sailing, the San Diego Yacht Club is committed to growing the philanthropy that will continue to sustain the Sailing Foundation in its mission of promoting national and international amateur sailing, maritime education and competition among people in the San Diego Area.

The San Diego Yacht Club Sailing Foundation is a California, non-profit benefit corporation exempt from income tax under Internal Revenue Code section 501C(3) and is a “qualified amateur sports organization” under Section 501(j) of the Internal Revenue Code, IRS Tax ID No. 33-0510953. Contributions to the San Diego Yacht Club Sailing Foundation are tax-deductible.

“David and Eugene are both fantastic sailors in their own right, Eugene was a two-time All-American at the Naval Academy, he’s one of the nation’s top Sunfish sailors, and we race Vipers together a lot,” says Fanberg (at left). “Being in Newport this time of year is phenomenal given it’s so hot down south, so that’s a really good reason for our team to compete in the Resolute Cup! We’re really looking forward to fantastic competition; a lot of old friends from college will be sailing the event so it will be like a reunion of sorts—it brings back memories of racing in college sailing these type of short races.” Racing for the Resolute Cup will start on Wednesday, September 11. On Saturday, September 14, the top half of the fleet will be conclude the regatta with three double-point races. Racing will take place on Narragansett Bay between Rose and Goat islands starting at 10:30 am each morning and running through the afternoon, weather permitting. —Text by Michelle Slade; photos by ROLEX / Daniel Forster (2), Jeff Sackett and Zak Fanberg
