Hybrid flying luxury yacht.

Designed by two experienced engineers, Guillaume Hoddé and Matthieu Ozanne, who share a passion for flying, AirYacht’s hybrid vehicle combines flying and sailing. French yacht designer Franck Darnet designed the vehicle. The AirYacht consists of two parts: a helium-filled airship, and a streamlined luxury yacht that is coupled under the airship. When in flight, the yacht serves as the airship’s gondola, housing the crew. To cruise on the sea, the yacht is lowered down on a set of cables, then released once it reaches the water’s surface. The process is reversed when it comes time to attach the yacht back to the airship. AirYacht will use the largest rigid airship to come on Earth as a flying vector, with a length of 200 meters and a height of 50 meters.…

BOATING IS NZ’S FAVOURITE RECREATIONAL ACTIVITY

The report extremely detailed report shows that Kiwi’s love their boating and despite all the odds such as Covid-19 and now increasing interest rates, boats and boating products are in strong demand and reaching records heights. The report says that 40% (1.9 million) of the population participate in boating annually and the nation’s fleet growing by an estimated 44,810 vessels per year. The stats say that the marine industry is a $2.9 billion dollar business, with more than 1,540,000 boats in New Zealand, and growing. “The marine industry is New Zealand’s largest non-agricultural, manufacturing industry,” says NZ Marine CEO, Peter Busfield. “It’s an industry built on high tech design, industry-led training and passionate people.” The survey results show substantial growth for the New Zealand marine industry-taking the total turnover from…

SO WHERE TO, FROM HERE?

It will be interesting to see what the next 30 years bring, particularly in the power options, which for many years have been predominantly petrol or diesel. But now, alternatives are launching into the market, such as hybrid, electric, solar, and hydrogen. Every week we hear a report of another electric outboard entering the market or breaking a distance or speed record. Recently an electric outboard broke the 100 mph barrier. 109mph by the Vision Marine Tech’s Hellcat, to be exact. Another option while our traditional diesel and petrol powered engines, both outboards and inboards, are becoming more efficient, lighter and more compact. In boat design and building, systems and materials are also moving forward, enabling boat builders and designers to produce stronger, lighter, and, as a result, more efficient…

READY FOR THE NEXT CHALLENGE

Having caught up with many of my old colleagues at the Hutchwilco Boat Show in May of this year, I realised that I have been working in the marine industry for the past 50 years. I found it fascinating that many of my colleagues are still in the same industry. Many are doing the same jobs, all be it with smarter technology. For my part, leaving school with no school certificate and going straight into a four-year sailmaking and upholstery apprenticeship at Shore Sails and covers stood me in good stead for the future. The fact is that we never stop not learning. On the sailmaking side, after building a 28ft Bruce Farr design keeler, Titus Canby, I migrated to windsurfer rigs in the early days working with Graham Allen…

PARTY CENTRAL

While the Bennington would have to be the ultimate party boat, it is based on a complex and super efficient hull that is nothing like Kiwis have seen from local builders. Underneath the vast platform are three individual hulls, which are refered to in the pontoon boat market as Tritoon. Compared to a twin hull, the third tube makes a big difference in the performance and ideal use for the boat. This third hull helps keep the boat stable, allows for quicker speeds, and makes the boat better equipped for choppy water. The 25 QSM is all about entertaining. The Q Model offers up a vast array of interior and exterior colours to compliment your style. The distinct rounded bow fence not only delivers an elegant visual cue, it also…

POPRA Is Rebuilding & Redefining West Coast Powerboat Racing

pacific powerboat

The official offshore racing circuit is coming to the West Coast bigger than ever before, and the charge is being led by none other than Scott Arden, former Director of Safety and past president of the Pacific Offshore Powerboat Racing Association (POPRA).

With plans to actively promote and market the offshore racing scene which is next to non-existent on the West Coast, it’s not going to be an easy task. But if anyone can manage to breath life back into the sport it’s Arden.

“Offshore Powerboat racing has dwindled to zero on the West Coast over the past five to seven years,” Arden said, “and it’s time to do something about it.”

Arden, coming from a business background, is taking a more business like approach to the issue of race promotion and marketing. The approach is aggressive and well planned, with his organization already in the process of hiring a marketing staff as well as securing production and TV air slots to generate a much greater reach than ever thought possible. Coupled with an aggressive sponsorship and fundraising campaign as well as plans to offer a significant size purse and tow money program, we can definitely expect to see a sizable resurgence if everything goes as planned.

Arden also understands that in order to succeed he will need to coordinate schedules and events with the other main offshore racing organizations such as OPA and SBI. Plans are already in the works for POPRA to be an APBA affiliate and his hopes are that all of the organizations will be able to work together without conflict towards a unified goal of further promoting the sport. Arden even goes so far as to say that he’s hoping to create a unified APBA World Offshore Championship that would incorporate all of the organizations once a year to end the race season.

POPRA also hopes to bring back the old Factory Classes which many racers got their first start in!

“Reviving the Factory classes is a win-win situation,” Arden said. “It gives the manufacturers an avenue to sell new boats and it brings new racers into the sport. There are many current racers who cut their teeth in the Factory classes.”

We’re looking forward to seeing this develop over the course of the next year as the West Coast prepares to get back its powerboating allure!

Pacific Powerboat’s exclusive insight into Riviera’s exquisite new Platinum Edition: “They performed superbly …”

September 4, 2019

Pacific Powerboat’s Barry Thompson took each of Riveria’s Platinum Edition Sports Yachts for a sea trial on the Gold Coast’s Broadwater – and liked what he found: “They performed superbly. I was impressed with the quietness, especially at cruise speeds, and how dry the boats are. They were also extremely easy to drive and very responsive. They are hard to fault when it comes to handling and performance … the Platinum Series has been developed to not only celebrate the design and overall success of their Sports Yacht range but to take them to another level, in terms of style, finesse and design.”

Fountaine Pajot Power 67 Review | Pacific Powerboat

Imagination with flair.

pacific powerboat

Long distance cruiser or simply a great place to entertain, the Fountaine-Pajot Power 67 has it all. The Power 67 combines all the strengths of a power catamaran with Fountaine Pajot’s extensive experience producing award-winning motor yachts and luxury catamarans. The Power 67 is the flagship model of Fountaine Pajot’s Motor Yacht range and boasts all the signature features of the shipyard’s highly acclaimed lineup, yet has also inherited the luxury, space, and elegance Alegria 67 sailing catamaran.

The Fountaine-Pajot Power 67 is the largest power catamaran from this leading French builder and another step up in the luxury scale. It has it all—size, stability, range and comfort.

The Fountaine Pajot 67 has the layout and space that only a 19.69 m long catamaran with a 9.84 m beam can provide. She’s drawn by Berret-Racoupeau Yacht Design and is available in two layouts. Lounge Maestro has the galley down with an owner’s suite and three double cabins with en suites. The Power 67 has the galley on the main deck in the Classic Maestro with an owner’s suite and four double cabins below, each with a private head.

pacific powerboat

Interestingly, Fountaine-Pajot has opted not to fit pods – a departure from the mid-range models in its lineup – but with straight shafts and the uprated twin 435hp Volvos, the Fountaine-Pajot Power 67 will cover 1,700nm at a sedate cruise of around 8 knots, thanks to a whopping 4,000-litre fuel capacity. Even at a still leisurely 15 knots, you have a range of over 400 nm. The top speed is around 20 knots.

Stairs to starboard on the aft deck lead up to the Power 67’s flying bridge that offers 32 sqm of open area. There’s a horseshoe-shaped lounge around a table to port, a wet bar starboard, and aft is two rear-facing double-wide lounges. Forward to starboard, the helm has dual multifunction displays with the controls and IPS joystick to starboard.

More akin to a superyacht, there is a jacuzzi and lounge area on the foredeck. This exceptional area of the yacht is directly accessible from the inside saloon through a sliding door.

pacific powerboat

The aft deck has 36 sqm of space and a large lounge around a table to port. Folding deck chairs add capacity, and the table can be lowered to create a large berth. There’s a smaller lounge to starboard as well as a grill. Overhead, the flying bridge provides shade for the entire area and has recessed lighting.

Large stainless-steel framed glass doors open to provide a seamless entry to the Power 67’s saloon. The boat’s expanse is felt in this area, where there’s a super-sized lounge and a table to starboard. When you have a beam of nearly 10m, you have plenty of space to work the layout magic, and in the Power 67, that amounts to an impressive 40sqm. Her quality design and trims help usher in the natural light and further enhance the serenity and comfort of the living areas.

pacific powerboat

The accommodation below in the hulls offers four to six double cabins, making the Power 67 an ideal charter boat. In Charter mode, the layout offers six double cabins with ensuite bathrooms, three in each hull in a symmetrical order.

Fountaine Pajot’s flagship is stunning in every respect, and it puts the builders right up there amongst some of the most influential power cat builders in the world. It’s a vessel that encompasses French flair with a bit of Italian styling and some imagination. It is sure to appeal to both the recreational and charter market and is destined to be seen at some of the world’s ultimate cruising destinations. Great Barrier Reef or the Bay of Islands would be a great start.

For a full review on the Fountaine Pajot Power 67, check out the Nov-Dec issue of Pacific PowerBoat magazine (Online Oct 24)
