Howards’ Way: 25 years on

To coincide with the feature in October's MBM on the 25th anniversary of Howards' Way, we've tracked down Sea Gypsy, the Sealine Ambassador 285 that starred in the show's closing credits

Will the real Sea Gypsy please stand up? One of the most memorable scenes from Howards’ Way is the closing credits from series three onwards, which features a Sealine Ambassador 285 called Sea Gypsy , which comes perilously close to hitting a sailing boat as it cuts straight in front of its path.

Many boats claim to be the original Sea Gypsy but MBM now believes it has tracked down the actual one.

The boat – still called Sea Gypsy – is currently kept at Val Wyatts , in Wargrave on the Thames. The current owner of the boat, Tony Revell, told MBM, “I bought Sea Gypsy in November 2009. As far as I know, she was sold in June 1999 via a yacht broker at Penton Hook Staines. After this she was moved to Bray Marina, where she was kept until 2002. She was then moved to Shamrock Quay where until 2006 she was used for cruising around the Isle of Wight and the Solent.

By the time Revell came across her she was out of the water in Shamrock Quay and in a poor state of repair. Since purchasing her last year, he has spent a lot of time and money restoring her to her former glory.

“After I bought her we fitted two new engines, the same as the old Volvo AQ225 petrol V8s, and had the two Volvo SP 290 drives re-conditioned,” he said. “I also stripped all of the interior and refitted it due to water damage from a leaking hood. The hull has been buffed and polished and she now has a new roof. The name has been updated with new transfers.

“I moved her to Val Wyatts in Wargrave in June of this year and we use her every week, her first voyage being to the Henley Regatta in July. It is amazing how many people know her from Howards’ Way and it is often mentioned when we pass through the locks on the Thames.”

Sea Gypsy also appeared in the pages of MBM way back in June 1987 when we put it through its paces in a boat test.   VIEW VIDEO To view the closing credits, which feature the Sealine Ambassador 285 click here .

Island Gypsy Yachts traces its roots back to over 130 years ago, when  Halvorsen Boats  were launched in Norway in 1887 by Halvor Andersen. His son, Lars joined the family business, and after some difficult times he moved to South Africa in 1922 and began a boat repair business.

A few years later, Lars and his family relocated to Australia, settling in Sydney. There the Halvorsen name became synonymous with quality and style in the boat building industry.

During this 1970s, Harold’s son Harvey became the new designer for the business, and in 1975 he orchestrated a venture between his family business and global marine heavyweight Joseph Kong, former General Manager of American Marine Company. This new project was to design, build and market a brand-new range of pleasure boats all over the world.

Harvey started with a new 30-foot design, and whilst designing the vessel he began to brainstorm names for the brand. He wanted to sell a lifestyle, so began gaining inspiration from thoughts of cruising the Great Barrier Reef, and other exotic lands with girls in Hula skirts. He wanted to avoid using the Halvorsen name in case the range was ever sold, as he didn’t want to sell the Halvorsen brand – out of nowhere he came up with the name  Island Gypsy .

He created the concept for the new logo, taking inspiration from the popular crossed flags theme, which seemed to be very fashionable on large Motor Yachts in the USA market. Years later, he found out that in 1948 the family business had actually built a large boat for the tourist market with the name  Island Gypsy  to be used on the Great Barrier Reef. He was just 9 years old, so this name had obviously remained with him in the back of his mind, just for this moment.

Relaunched in 2019 the iconic Australian  Island Gypsy   brand of motorised yachts has been successful around the world, and is ideally suited to couples and families who enjoy entertaining onboard and the quiet pleasure of coastal cruising.

Swiftsure Yachts

The Island Gypsy 44  Stella Maris  seems made for comfortable Pacific Northwest cruising. Its heavy displacement and voluminous hull create a quiet and easy going cruising experience, while its two 275 HP Volvo diesels run efficiently all day long with enough reserve power to get through the roughest waters. The main salon has truly remarkable room, with large windows starboard, port and forward to take in the cruising grounds’ greatest visuals.

At a cruising speed of approximately 7.5 knots, total fuel consumption is around 4 GPH. The 800-gallon fuel tankage means there’s seldom a need to stop for fuel. It’s an efficient and comfortable way to see the Pacific Northwest, and there’s no need for many fuel stops along the way.

Built by Kong and Halvorsen, the Island Gypsy features heavy hand-laid fiberglass. On the construction side, the longitudinal and transverse members are bonded in for exceptional strength. On the finish side of things, the Golden Burmese teak woodwork is beautifully executed.

Stella Maris  is more than just a vehicle to get to cruising grounds. She’s a boat with living room everywhere, from the engine room to the master stateroom. While the master stateroom aft is certainly a focal point of this design, the guest cabins forward can accommodate guests or kids in great comfort.

The trawler lifestyle holds appeal both for sailors looking to the trawler lifestyle and anyone who wants to ease back and enjoy the voyage with the fuel efficiency of hull speed.  Stella Maris  has been enjoyed by three happy families and is ready to provide the next owners with affordable and efficient cruising.

Just aft and to port is a second berth. There are upper and lower single in this cabin. The cushions are in great condition. The bunks are just over 6’ 6”. The top bunk has space to port underneath the window to store stuff. There is a locker forward on inside of the berths. The locker has space on the top and fiddles to contain items from falling.  It a midsize hanging locker. This cabin also has a large opening window. Engine room access is also through this cabin.

The Forward Head & Shower

The forward-facing head features the Vacuflush system. There is also a separate shower area, which is closed off by a shower curtain. The shower itself is outboard of the head there is enough space to take a shower sitting on the wood slatted seat or standing. The sink is forward of the shower. Storage is outboard of the sink. A window above which opens. There’s also a large mirror.

Aft is the owner’s cabin. And it certainly fits the bill as a master stateroom. There’s a true queen mattress, which is very comfortable. There are reading lights above on the aft cabin wall. There is an amazing amount of storage, with 11 drawers per side, plus one drawer under the berth on each side. Three drawers on the port side in three doors on the starboard right next to the bunk. And then four drawers outboard on both sides. Aft of the drawers are large storage lockers on each side. Port and starboard you have huge storage space for you name it, plus shelves above the drawers and above the cabinets on both sides. On the starboard side you have the sit-down desk. The private head is on the port side.

Aft head and Shower

On the port side is the head. Inboard of the head you have the standup shower which closes with a solid door. The head itself is an aft-facing Vacuflush. Outboard of the toilet is the vanity and sink and plenty of counter space. This room also has a window which opens inward on a hatch. There is an amazing amount of storage throughout the head. This is the right sized head for this type of boat, spacious yet configured so it doesn’t intrude much on the living areas.

Moving up the passage to the main salon, there is a large but shallow pantry cabinet. Above that there is a  deep cabinet.

The main salon is large, and it serves many purposes. From a clockwise starting on the port side and go around from there. It starts with a Kenmore apartment-sized fridge and freezer. At the aft end of the port side galley is the microwave. Below is the counter space ample for a power boat of this size, and definitely larger than one would have on a sailboat of this size. Forward of that is the sink and virtually unused Force 10 3-burner stove/oven. The galley features a remarkable amount of storage throughout.

Moving on to the port side forward is the dining area. It starts with a Kenwood stereo facing the dining area. There’s an ice maker in small storage area to its left. Moving forward, the table seats easily up to six with the bench seating and a couple of chairs. More could be squeezed in. There is massive storage under the seats in the salon. The salon table itself serves two purposes. It can be folded up for a game atmosphere or to seat the maximum number.  Otherwise when it is folded out it provides a comfortable dining experience and has an elegant top built in.

Next we move to the front of this cabin which is also the pilot’s birth for below. On left side you have a sharp television and a large counter space for all kinds of goodies. Bajau, the Sea Gypsies of the Togean Islands

motor yacht sea gypsy

Togean Islands map

I met Rohadi, a Bajau Sea Gypsy man at his home in the Togean Islands , Sulawesi , Indonesia last month. I sat and heard tales of his life underwater. His trials and tribulations of being a man of the sea – a Bajau hunter. He has spent more of his life under the water, than above the water, therefore developing a slightly lung capacity, which he inherited via his genealogy. I am a cultural photographer and this has been one of the most interesting projects I have had the privilege of being assigned to. Here is his story:

Armed with just a simple wooden speargun and hand-fashioned wooden goggles, Rohani in his active fishing days, moved from island to island in pursuit of fish. It is said that the Bajau have a genetically larger lung capacity than average, and that some can even spend five minutes underwater on just one breath.

motor yacht sea gypsy

Bajau, a man of the sea, a man who lives as a lifetime fisherman in Togean Islands

Rohani was born 82 years ago on a boat off an island near Makassar , but Kabalutan is now his home. According to Rohani, his life as a sea gypsy has been a good one. As well as being a spear fisherman, he was able to turn his talents to other types of fishing. In his younger days, he even joined a Japanese fishing boat and travelled great distances.

His favourite place to hunt was Pulau Unauna. “It takes 12 hours to sail to Unauna from this village. It is the best reef in the Togeans. I never used an engine. It was not necessary. I just raised my small sail and headed off.”

Now a widower, Rohani explained, “At times I had to be away from my wife and family for long periods, but I always returned and was always able to provide for my family”. He went on, “Now I am too old to hunt. My muscles have weakened, so I just sit here on this porch. I enjoy having more time to spend with my family and people like you, who come to visit me”.

Waters around the Togean Islands

Rohani still has a twinkle in his eye, and when he speaks of the sea, his face lights up. He proudly told me, “I was eight years old when I did my first dive. I could hold my breath the longest. I would have competitions with my friends. No one taught me. I knew from a very young age – you must go down, down, down, very slowly. You must be careful”.

Rohani said that every boy in the village owns a speargun and that girls can spearfish too. “When you get skilled, it usually takes around 5 to 8 minutes to spear a 10kg trevally, from the pursuit to the kill.”

As I sat with Rohani, his family gathered around him on the small wooden porch, and he talked about his involvement in the film Jago – A Life Underwater. Since a film crew came to the Togean Islands three years ago to make this documentary, he explained, visitors have shown lots of interest in his village. Rohani is the star of the film. “Last week we had a group of Koreans here. They all want to come and meet me,” he said, smiling.

A Togean Islands sea gypsy village

The Togeans have diverse ethnic groups living on the 56 islands strung across the Gulf of Tomini . Most Bajau have settled in villages that sit above the sea on stilts. There are more than 37 such villages and smaller settlements in the archipelago. Other major ethnic groups include the Pamona people on the two largest islands, Togean and Batudaka, and the Saluan people.

As you cruise among the islands, you see many clusters of stilted houses, which are all joined by a long footbridge. The Bajau language is widely spoken. The main religion is Islam, which came to this part of Sulawesi in the 17th century from Gorontalo, an area north of the Togeans.

The waters of the Togean Islands are plied by many tiny wooden boats, some supported with spider-like outriggers, many with single triangle sails. The fishermen work in the gulf, but often venture far out into the sea. The Gulf of Tomini is protected from harsh weather conditions. The only thing to disturb the calm are the flying fish, which regularly jump through the air, and dolphins, which can frequently be seen breaking the surface.

motor yacht sea gypsy

Togean Islands from above

There are three types of coral reef in the Togeans: fringing reefs, barrier reefs and atolls. Fringing reefs, which hug the shoreline, can take up to 10,000 years to form. The barrier reefs can take up to 100,000 years to establish, and an atoll can take as long as 30 million years.

Divers and snorkelers encounter perfect conditions year-round and discover an abundance of marine species, including plants, fish and other sea creatures. The Togeans offer some of the brightest, clearest waters in all Indonesia ; viewed from above, the colours of the water are extraordinary.

The Togeans are a naturalist’s delight, not just under the sea, but on the land, and in the sky as well. The forest-clad islands are the habitat of the babirusa, tarsier, Togean macaque and hanging parrot. Jungle trekking is popular. In the early morning you can hear the call of the Togean hawk-owl. It is common to see flocks of 20 to 30 knobbed hornbills descending to the mangroves to feed.

motor yacht sea gypsy

Stephanie Brookes and David Metcalf with one of Bajau people

But it was the Bajau people, with their strong culture and peaceful way of life that tugged at my Togean heartstrings. I loved getting to know a little more of their seafaring life, a life which has a place under the sea as much as on top of it. The beauty and purity of this remote location in Sulawesi will no doubt bring me back to this little piece of paradise, time and time again.

ABOUT TOGEAN ISLANDS

Accommodation: 10 of the Togean Islands offer accommodation in mostly 3-star resorts that include three meals a day. If you are a snorkeler, choose a resort, which has a coral house reef at the front. Often places have their own water supply and are run by solar energy. Wi-Fi access does not exist, and phone reception is unreliable. It is best to book one week in advance.
