ASBURY PARK, NJ —BarCo Brands, the restaurant group that owns Deal Lake Bar + Co. in Loch Arbour, just announced it has reached a deal to take over ownership of Langosta Lounge and Asbury Park Yacht Club, two very well-known bar/restaurants on the Asbury Park boardwalk.

Up until this January, they were owned by Marilyn Schlossbach, who also runs a nearby catering business, also from the Asbury Park boardwalk. BarCo is also taking over ownership of Salt Water Market and Pop's Garage, all located near each other on that stretch of boardwalk.

A sell price was not publicly disclosed.

The names of both Langosta Lounge and Asbury Park Yacht Club will be changing.

“We have all been enthusiastic customers of APYC (Asbury Park Yacht Club) over the years," said BarCo Brands co-founder Phil Villapiano on Friday, the day the deal was announced. "While the name will be changing, we plan on maintaining the vibe when we redesign that space. And just as we have done at Deal Lake Bar + Co., we plan on continuing the commitment to enhance the local music scene."

BarCo Brands said it has offered employment to all existing managers and staff at both bars, and plans for both venues to remain open with only brief closures for training and cosmetic changes to the interior.

BarCo said both restaurants will operate as "transitional concepts" for the spring/summer of 2023. However, future plans will involve a shutdown and full renovation between November 2023 and March 2024, with a grand opening on April 1, 2024.

"At that time, the new concepts will be unveiled," said the BarCo team of owners. "Although they are not releasing the details of those concepts at this time, the group has indicated that it wants to preserve at least one aspect of the prior operation."

BarCo Brands was founded in 2017 by Andrea Pappas, Greg Bartz and Phil Villapiano and joined by Tim McMahon last year.

In October, BarCo announced they plan to open a sports bar at Fort Monmouth, to be called Baseline Social. This week, they revealed Baseline Social will open in June of 2023 and will be a a 17,000-sq.-ft. entertainment complex featuring three bars, over 300seats inside and out and five virtual golf bays. End of an era: An OG of the Asbury Park, NJ Boardwalk scene has been sold

⚫️ After 14+ years, oceanfront restaurant Langosta Lounge is changing hands

⚫️ new owners plan to run "transitional concepts" for spring and summer this year, ⚫️ restauranteur marilyn schlossbach will focus energy on long branch restaurant.

ASBURY PARK — When Langosta Lounge first opened on the Asbury Park boardwalk in November 2008, restaurateur Marilyn Schlossbach and her husband Scott Szegeski had no idea what was in store for them.

The oceanfront restaurant with a “vacation cuisine” menu was among the first new establishments to open in the city that Bruce Springsteen had lamented in song as in “ruins.”

It was a key part of a rebirth along the east side of Asbury.

Then came Superstorm Sandy. And then, less than eight years later, a global pandemic.

The final day for Langosta Lounge on the Asbury Park boardwalk

Schlossbach and Szegeski navigated it all — while raising twin daughters, who were infants when the massive storm in 2012 wiped out the entire interior of the restaurant.

But they’ve built things back, stronger each time. Until the announcement this week that the Langosta Lounge era of the boardwalk would end soon — their final day slated for Feb. 4.

"Asbury has changed and evolved since we first came here and it needs a new breath of different, fresh air up here in a business of this size," Schlossbach said in an interview with New Jersey 101.5.

What will take over the Langosta Lounge space?

BarCo Brands has announced it will be taking over the entire pavilion from Langosta, through Pop’s Garage and the Asbury Park Yacht Club, as first reported by the Asbury Park Sun and then confirmed by both BarCo Brands and Schlossbach.

An Instagram post by Deal Lake Bar + Co hyped the buzz, showing a Bar + Co sticker being placed on the door to the Yacht Club, plus a photo of the group's owners at Langosta.

Who are the new restaurant owners?

The group created and operates Deal Lake Bar + Co in Loch Arbour. BarCo Brands was founded by Andrea Pappas, Greg Bartz and Phil Villapiano and joined last year by Tim McMahon.

They also announced a second location in Oceanport in October — an open floor bar and restaurant in the Commissionary of the old Fort Monmouth property.

Baseline Social has been slated to open in June.

The 17,000-square-foot entertainment complex will include three bars over 300 seats indoor and outdoor and five virtual golf bays.

BarCo brands has announced it would run “transitional concepts” at the Asbury pavilion for the Spring and Summer of 2023.

What will the Asbury Park space eventually become?

Future plans would then involve a shutdown and full renovation between November and March 2024, with a grand opening April 1, 2024.

At that time, the new concepts will be unveiled, though the owners have assured patrons they hope to preserve at least one part of the prior operation.

“We have all been enthusiastic customers of APYC over the years. While the name will be changing, we plan on maintaining the vibe when we redesign that space. And just as we have done at Deal Lake Bar + Co., we plan on continuing the commitment to enhance the local music scene,” Villapiano said in a written release.

What was the tipping point in deciding to close Langosta Lounge?

After coming through the massive rebuilt after Superstorm Sandy struck in 2012, Schlossbach said the arrival of COVID in March 2020 began with one set of problems.

"We had to downsize and it was really hard emotionally laying people off and restructuring that. But, coming back from it has been exponentially more difficult," she said.

"We have supply chain shortages, overages on food costs and labor costs and not enough people to work in all of these businesses — not just restaurants but all of our vendors are suffering too, in our community, with the lack of bodies to put in your business."

The 'next' Asbury Park on the shore

She said having four different elements to staff and operate within the pavilion is a lot.

"This summer was, I think, my breaking point on how much I really want to handle as an almost 60-year-old woman that's been doing this for a long time," Schlossbach said.

And there's also their existing "other project" not far away, along the coast, to devote more attention to.

Of that, Schlossbach said, "Long Branch to me feels like what Asbury felt like when we came."

What is next for Marilyn Schlossbach in NJ?

Schlossbach will be turning her attention to the WhiteChapel Projects in Long Branch .

The restaurant, brewery and creative venue first opened in 2018, with Schlossbach adding it to her Marilyn Group banner in 2020.

There is also the nonprofit, Food For Thought by the Sea, which runs free community dinners for holidays in Asbury Park. Plus catering gigs — and possibly some more surf time for the family.

This is not the first time that Schlossbach has closed up shop at one Shore property as she focuses on a new endeavor.

Previous restaurants of the Marilyn Group included Labrador Lounge in Normandy and a different Pop’s Garage in Shrewsbury.

It might be a tough goodbye, though, for patrons who have looked to the Lounge as a constant amid the once-again bustling Asbury Park boardwalk.

94.3 The Point

Popular and Beloved Monmouth County, NJ Restaurant to Close

The restaurant scene in Monmouth County and the Jersey Shore is competitive.

Even so, this closure is catching many by surprise.

94.3 The Point logo

With a seemly amazing restaurant every block or so at the Shore, it begs the question, how do eateries compete?

The answer isn't that simple, but I can tell you that it's way more than just the food.

Many restaurants in our area have a family history and a deep connection with the community.

These are the restaurants that have been in a family for generations.

These are the restaurants that are always involved with local non-profits.

You know the staff, the servers, the bartenders, and often the owners as well.

This afternoon I caught word that one of my favorite Monmouth county restaurants would be closing for good next month.

I'm truly shocked and saddened.

A husband and wife duo opened this boardwalk eatery in 2008.

It quickly became popular as the place to dine for Mexican-inspired cuisine.

Even in the off-season, you knew you were going to have to wait a bit to get a table, and that was alright. It was worth the wait.

Like many businesses, this restaurant was wiped out during Superstorm Sandy. With a tight-knit community behind them, the owners rebuilt.

When COVID-19 forced many restaurants to stop operating, this restaurant stayed open to make sure those who needed food got fed.

The owners of this Monmouth county mainstay really went above and beyond for the community.

You may have heard the name Marilyn Schlossbach.

She is more than a restaurant owner and chef, she's a humanitarian.

Marilyn's community work includes a collaboration with Interfaith Neighbors on Asbury Park’s Kula Urban Farm, organizing community gardening and surf lessons with the Boys and Girls Club of Monmouth County, and unwavering support of environmental organizations like Clean Ocean Action, Surfrider Foundation, the American Littoral Society and Waves For Water that work to protect coastlines and marine environments.

Marilyn is the founder of the not-for-profit Food For Thought By The Sea . The organization fosters healthy relationships and learning opportunities through culinary job placement and environmental studies.

I've had the pleasure to interview and talk with Marilyn many times, and she is truly a good person that is always looking to help others.

She and her husband are also the brains behind Langosta Lounge in Asbury Park .

APP.com reported on Friday that BarCo Brands operated by Andrea Pappas, Greg Bartz, and Phil Villapiano will be taking over Asbury Park Yacht Club, Pop's Garage, and Langosta Lounge.

Langosta will close on February 4.

Andrea Pappas said in a press release:

There is a ray of sunshine in this news.

Langosta is not closing for good.

APP.com is also reporting that BarCo is planning on closing on February 4, but will reopen "with only brief closures."

A full renovation and closure are expected to begin in November of this year and continue through March 2024.

A huge thank you to husband and wife Marilyn Schlossbach and husband Scott Szegeski for so many years of great meals and memories at Langosta Lounge. It simply won't be the same without you.

ASBURY PARK: Asbury Park Yacht Club Dog friendly at their outdoor patio on the boardwalk, and inside on non-busy days! Full bar! Live music! Ocean front views! Owned by restauranteur and chef Marilyn Schlossbach! All her restaurants are dog friend

I went here a few weeks ago or so and it was pretty busy inside. it had a live band playing and was crowded in that bar area. I got a few drinks, and sat and enjoyed the band. the atmosphere was great, it was right on the boardwalk and was pretty nice. Definitely a good spot to come chill out!

Photo of Julia P.

Micheal is by far the nicest and most fun bar tender I have ever experienced. Super hot and social. Must come.

Photo of Marc K.

Cool low key intimate place for a variety of live music. Good bartenders and reasonable beer selections. Always enjoy coming here to check out the music!

Photo of Andrew C.

Walked into this bar via the entrance that connects this place to Pops next door. One of the first questions I ask the bartender is if the two businesses are connected because I had just walked in from the other. He tells me they are under the same ownership. Then I asked if that is so, are there any items from Pops that are served there. He says "No, but you can order from OUR menu." with a condescending tone. I ordered a margarita on the rocks with salt on the rim. I get the drink with no salt. As I'm having the drink I also hear this same bartender take a drink order. The customer orders a few beers and a shot of Patron. Bartender says he doesn't have patron and then doesn't offer what he does have. It eventually gets to the point where I overhear bartender saying smart ass comments to this customer as well. In summary, your bartender needs to get that chip off his shoulder and the drink was underwhelming.

Photo of Charlotte N.

Amazing bar, amazing music, amazing food! Bartender Andrew is the man! Happy specials are awesome and it's so nice to be right on the beach

Good for boozing on the boardwalk. Great prices, cool staff and nice music. #welldone

Very casual place. Come here to relax, have some casual drinks, and shop! Yes there is a store that is connected to the bar. Pretty dangerous/fun for someone like me. Oh and dont let the name fool you, this isnt some fancy up-tight place, its a super casual laid back boardwalk beach bar. Definitely stop in for a beer.

Photo of K M.

Came here for the ambiance of palm trees to enjoy the outside seating and have a refreshing drink. Left extremely disappointed. Ordered margaritas on the rocks, they were the most pungent sour lime taste ever. Completely horrible. Also they don't have a cocktail menu, shouldn't a "yacht club" have one?? Fail.

Powerful NYC Attorney, Wife Missing After Luxury Yacht Capsizes Off Coast Of Italy: Reports

A New York attorney with Connecticut roots and his wife are among seven people missing after the yacht they were on capsized early this week in Italy, according to multiple reports.

Christopher Morvillo

asbury park yacht club closing

Christopher Morvillo, age 59, who attended the Canterbury School in Litchfield County, Connecticut, and later Fordham University, along with his wife, Neda Morvillo, age 57, are among six people who are unaccounted after the 184-foot luxury yacht overturned off the coast of Sicily on Monday morning, Aug. 19, according to ABC 7.

Twenty-two people were on board the ship at the time of the incident near Palermo, according to the report.

The couple's bodies may still be on the boat, which rescuers have had a difficult time reaching, ABC 7 reports.

According to the Financial Times , the yacht is owned by a client of Morvillo's, British tycoon Mike Lynch.

Morvillo served as an assistant US Attorney for the Southern District of New York from 1999 to 2005, having helped in the criminal investigation stemming from the 9/11 attacks, according to his bio on his firm's website.

Two months ago, Morvillo wrote a post on LinkedIn following an exoneration in a client. After congratulating multiple colleagues and team members, Morvillo thanks his family.

"And, finally, a huge thank you to my patient and incredible wife, Neda Morvillo, and my two strong, brilliant, and beautiful daughters, Sabrina Morvillo and Sophia Morvillo. None of this would have been possible without your love and support. I am so glad to be home," said Morvillo, closing on an eerie note.

"And they all lived happily ever after…."

Allen Andrew Bessemer, Jr., 59, of Brielle, passed away unexpectedly on August 21, 2024, at the Monmouth Medical Center with his devoted family at his side.

Al was born in Point Pleasant and resided throughout the Jersey Shore area. He most recently landed in Brielle in a house that he meticulously designed for his family and where he spent most of his time hanging out in the backyard with his wife, their two daughters, and their two dogs. Al loved competing (and many times winning) fishing tournaments through the Manasquan River Marlin & Tuna Club and catching up with his many friends at the Manasquan River Yacht Club. But, what he loved most of all, was spending a day out on the water in his infamous red boat, the Linda B., searching for his next big catch with his late father, his girls, and his great friends. He was a legendary sportsman, champion fisherman, and everyone’s first call when they needed anything – big or small.

As Terry Pratchett famously wrote, “No one is finally dead until the ripples they cause in the world die away.” Al will be profoundly missed, but the ripples Al and the Linda B. left in the world will never die away.

Al was predeceased by his father and best friend, Allen A. Bessemer, Sr., on June 23, 2017.

Al is survived by his devoted wife of 36 years, Linda Ann (Dimmick) Bessemer, his two cherished daughters, Emily Bessemer of Point Pleasant Beach and Mary Bessemer, with her husband, Thomas Zelante, Jr. of Morristown, his loving mother, Jane (Zinser) Bessemer of Brielle, his two treasured dogs, Harry and Stanley, and so many family members and friends, whom he met everywhere he went.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered for Allen on Tuesday, August 27, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Denis Church, 90 Union Ave., Manasquan, NJ. In lieu of a traditional repast, a Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, October 26, 2024, at Manasquan River Yacht Club, 405 Riverview Lane, Brielle, NJ. There will not be a procession from the funeral home prior to Mass.

Instead of traditional flower offerings, Allen’s family requests that donations be made in his memory to the Monmouth Medical Center with designations to the Cancer Center.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall Township. To offer condolences to the family please visit:
