Full Details

The Xp 55 deck layout has been designed for ease of sail handling and manoeuvres whether cruising or racing. Standard features include a below deck furling drum (with furling line led back to one of the four cockpit winches). The longitudinal genoa tracks are supplied with adjustable genoa cars. All halyards and control lines are concealed below deck and led aft to the four large self-tailing winches supplied as standard.

The mainsheet is attached to a single pad-eye at the cockpit floor and lead aft via the mast/halyard channels below deck, where it may be easily handled using the cockpit winches. For racing purposes, a windward tweaker block system can be deployed for both genoa sheets as well as the mainsheet to enable very narrow sheeting angles.

Innovative Bowsprit

The Xp models were conceived as true dual-purpose yachts. The guiding principle is that the Xp 55 should be highly competitive when sailed with a full crew and also easily handled by a couple or family. It should be optimised for racing under major handicap rating systems, but equally suited to a relaxed weekend cruise or a longer blue-water passage.

Key to this adaptability is the multi-functional bowsprit, which offers four variations. The standard fixture is a GRP cowl with integrated anchor fitting. This allows for asymmetric ‘Code’ sails and similar to be flown from a fixed tack point, whilst ensuring the steel anchor roller with electric windlass are easily accessible.

The Xp 55 features three spacious cabins, a generous galley, a choice of double or triple heads, and two owners' cabin layouts.

The elegant Xp 55 interior includes new optional brushed oak wood furniture with walnut floorboards and new fixtures and fittings throughout. Teak furniture with teak and holly floorboards is standard.

To port the saloon features a large U-shaped sofa with ample seating for up to eight people, a table with central bottle storage, an upholstered central seat, and a long, comfortable sofa to starboard.

The freeboard on both port and starboard accommodates deep shelves with custom-designed stainless steel book brackets, and hull portlights. Spacious storage cupboards are fitted adjoining the moulded deck liner, while finishing interior touches include Ocean Air blinds and screens.

The Xp 55 interior features a three cabin layout which benefits from exemplary use of light and generosity of space whilst providing ample accommodation for friends, family or crew. Ample natural light from the flush-mounted hatches and opening portlights creates a welcoming interior throughout.

The Xp 55 is offered with twin showers as standard for superb convenience, with one shower in the master heads forward and a second spacious shower with seat in the aft starboard heads, accessible from the main cabin. There are two saloon options – the standard twin heads arrangement creating an extra-spacious galley.

The owners’ suite features a central double berth with generous headroom on all sides, an ensuite heads to port, and wardrobe to starboard.

Alternative Layout

The Xp 55 can be offered with an optional three heads arrangement, which retains a generous galley and saloon area while also incorporating an additional third heads ensuite to the port aft cabin.

The owners’ suite features a generous double berth to port, comfortable seating and storage to starboard, and en suite master heads forward. This arrangement also allows ease of access via the heads to the forepeak sail locker.

Shinkai: Inside the design journey of the superyacht designed for deep-ocean adventures

“Designing explorers – boats with a meaningful purpose – really interests me,” says Philippe Briand , a naval architect whose 30-year career can be traced through the 12,000 or more yachts conceived on his drawing board: a multitude of race-winning custom sailboats, a huge number of cruising yachts from production builders Beneteau and Jeanneau and, latterly, a series of elegant custom superyachts bearing the stamp of his award-winning Vitruvius brand.

So when approached by a superyacht owner with a desire to explore high-latitude waters – not just above the waves, but also beneath – his attention was truly grabbed by the challenge. “This highly experienced client had plenty of ideas as to how he might achieve his goal,” Briand explains, “including the possibility of a ‘submarine yacht’ – an idea that was eventually decided to be just too far ahead of its time.”

The brief eventually evolved into a highly-customised 50-metre explorer, whose prime task was to carry and operate a three-man submarine. “Of course,” Briand continues, “the boat still had to have all the luxury of a superyacht and carry a normal complement of tenders and toys, as well as a Toyota Land Cruiser and an all-electric Jet-Ski, so the 50-metre target size was under pressure from the very start of the design process.” The ‘high latitude’ requirement, including a desire by the owner to transit the Northeast Passage, further added to the complexity.

A 6.3-tonne, U-Boat Worx C-Explorer 3 was eventually selected as the submarine of choice. To allow its deployment in less than perfect sea conditions, a 7.0-tonne crane with an 8-metre reach, with stabilising lines running from the sub to deck winches on the mothership, was identified as the most reliable method of launch and recovery. This would be accomplished as a ‘launch-and-go’ operation with the three passengers boarding the sub before launch.

Breakthrough stabilisation

Then came the issue of the mothership’s stabilisation. “I was not keen on using conventional fin stabilisers,” explains the owner, “because they are rather inefficient at low speed and can be damaged by ice and flotsam, so I suggested that we should investigate the use of gyro-stabilisation, as I knew this is being used successfully in many smaller craft today.”

The technology is not new – Emily Cadwallader’s 136-metre motor yacht Savarona had been fitted with a gyro weighing 50-tonnes in 1931 – but this was never considered a satisfactory solution on larger yachts until recent technological advances, including the operation of the gyro in a vacuum and a tenfold increase in rotational speed to 2,000rpm, prompted its reemergence – but only in boats up to around 30 metres LOA.

The main downside of scaling such technology up to larger vessels is that the gyro installation will occupy a significant volume in the yacht, but for this project there were other considerations. At cruising speed the gyro’s performance is slightly inferior to fins, but, says Briand, “this deficiency can be partially rectified by adding long bilge-boards to the hull”. Going with a gyro would also eliminate ice-vulnerable hull appendages, increase the fuel efficiency of Briand’s already efficient hull form, and provide significant additional stability when launching the submarine and tenders, so it quickly became the most compelling option.

With this choice made, the final hurdle was to identify a manufacturer. “No one had ever built such a large and technologically advanced gyro, and just two manufacturers worldwide had the capability,” explains the owner, “Veem in Australia and GyroMarine in Italy – both of whom satisfied us that they could build what we needed. We eventually chose the Livorno-based GyroMarine for their Active Drive concept that is more attuned to the needs of larger vessels with slower roll rates.”

A custom-built GyroMarine GM600 Active Drive System gyro – at that time the world’s largest active drive system – was selected. This 23-tonne beast is housed within a 3.3m x 2.7m x 2.5m cube and develops an impressive 850kN of angular momentum (a measure of rotor size and speed) that delivers a stabilising torque of 1,000kN m, with peak power consumption of 70kW. “It was a unique experience for us to work with such a passionately interested owner,” says Tony Hands, the technical manager of GyroMarine’s Active Drive technology. “He certainly put us through our paces to create an ideal solution for this very exciting yacht.”

The Toyota Land Cruiser also called for special treatment. “I’ve carried vehicles on previous yachts,” says the owner, “but they rust really badly in salty air.” The answer was to treat the vehicle in the same careful manner as one would an embarked helicopter and store it in a sealed garage.

Finalising the design

With these technical parameters decided, together with identifying the need for six guest suites and generous accommodation for 12 crew, Briand could start design work. His approach was first to concentrate on the stern to locate the submarine, tenders, toys and gyro, to confirm that they could be accommodated within Briand’s slender 50-metre hull with its characteristic steep underwater rise at the stern – an essential element to meet the owner’s demand for fuel-efficiency.

While highly efficient, this hull shape limits the volume available in the stern sections for the internal stowage of tenders and other equipment so, as the design progressed, the yacht’s size not only grew to 55 metres but the decision was also taken to store the submarine on the open aft deck, together with the two tenders and the Land Cruiser. The submarine takes pride of place, centrally positioned in a shallow well at the stern with its huge Palfinger knuckle-boom launching crane on its starboard side. Just forward is the watertight box containing the Land Cruiser, a 5.7-metre SOLAS tender and its launching crane and an 8-metre limousine tender, launched by the sub’s crane. It’s a deck layout that permits sufficient below-deck volume to be allocated to the gyro.

With these items provisionally positioned, it became apparent that the elegant, low-profile design that is the trademark of Vitruvius designs would not provide sufficient volume for spacious accommodation. “I therefore pressed the owner to add an additional ‘owner’s deck’,” explains Briand, “rather than increase the length once again, which would make access to shelter and small harbours more difficult. After much discussion concerning the effect on the yacht’s aesthetics, this was eventually agreed.”

The remainder of the vessel offers all the luxury of a regular superyacht. Below an open observation deck, the uppermost enclosed deck contains the wheelhouse and captain’s cabin, while below is the owner’s deck featuring a full-beam dining room, two impressive suites and his and hers offices that provide panoramic views forward. Two spacious guest suites and two twin-bed children’s suites are located on the main deck together with the main saloon. Excluding the engine and gyro rooms, the crew have the lower deck to themselves, with seven cabins, a large mess room, laundry and galley.

Volodmyr Zelenskyy says Ukraine's invasion of Russia's Kursk region was a preventative move to halt Russian attacks in northern Ukraine and on the city of Sumy.

He told a news conference that the invasion was difficult but had made positive progress.

Mr Zelenskyy added that as well as capturing Russian soldiers, the cross-border invasion had other goals he could not disclose.

Russia's defence ministry said earlier that 115 Russian soldiers involved in a prisoner swap with Ukraine today had been captured in Kursk (see 13.18 post).

Ukrainian forces have gained fresh momentum from the invasion of Kursk invasion three weeks ago - and the delayed arrival of US weaponry this month.

Officials say they have taken about 100 square kilometres (62 square miles) of territory around Kursk.

A Russian-installed official in occupied Ukraine has boasted about burning Ukrainian books and called for "Ukrainianess" to be "burnt out at the root".

In its latest intelligence update, the UK Ministry of Defence reported the comments made by Dmitry Rogozin, senator for the Russian-controlled parts of Zaporizhzhia, which he posted on Telegram.

Mr Rogozin also said any truce in the war would amount to "certain death" for Russian children.

The MoD said the remarks were "the latest in a long line of Ukrainophobic comments" by senior Russian officials.

It said there were "likely many individuals" within Russia who still have "maximalist objectives" for the conflict - "including the destruction of Ukrainian culture, identity and statehood".

"This is despite the alleged Russian willingness to negotiate," the MoD commented.

At least five people have been killed at five others injured in a Russian attack in eastern Ukraine, a local official has said.

Vadym Filashkin, governor of the Donetsk region, said the emergency workers were at the scene of the attack in the town of Kostiantynivka.

"I urge you all again: take care of yourselves, evacuate," he wrote on Telegram, without providing more details. 

Kostiantynivka is near the location of heavy fighting in Donetsk, where Russian forces have been making advances for months.

The advance has quickened in recent weeks as Moscow's troops push towards the key town of Pokrovsk.

This is the latest situation on the ground in eastern Ukraine:

Ukraine will do all it can to force Vladimir Putin to end the war through diplomacy to save time and people, Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said.

The Ukrainian president suggested that if this did not happen, Kyiv would be prepared to do it by force.

He also said, when asked how he saw the conflict ending, that Ukraine's territorial integrity should be restored.

Today marks Ukraine's annual independence day - the third since Russia invaded in February 2022. 

No fireworks, parades or concerts are planned - instead Ukrainians are marking the day with commemorations for civilians and soldiers killed in the war.

President Zelenskyy also gave an impassioned speech, saying: "Independence is the silence we experience when we lose our people.

"Independence descends into the shelter during an air raid, only to endure and rise again and again to tell the enemy: You will achieve nothing."

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has pledged "to stand with Ukraine for as long as it takes with whatever it takes" in a video released for Ukraine's independence day today. 

He finished the message with the national salute "Slava Ukraini" - meaning glory to Ukraine.

Pictures have emerged of the aftermath of a prisoner exchange swap. 

Ukrainian soldiers are seen holding flags and hugging fellow troops after their release from Russian custody this morning. 

Meanwhile, photos released by Russia's defence ministry show some of its servicemen, who were captured during Ukraine's invasion in Kursk, being taken away by bus.

Ukraine and Russia have agreed to exchange 115 prisoners of war. 

Ukrainian officials said the 115 servicemen freed are conscripts, many of whom were taken prisoner in the first months of Russia's invasion. 

Among them are nearly 50 soldiers captured by Russian forces from the Azovstal steelworks in Mariupol.

Russia's defence ministry said the 115 Russian soldiers had been captured in the Kursk region, where Ukrainian forces launched their surprise offensive into Russia two weeks ago. 

The ministry said the soldiers were currently in Belarus, but would be taken to Russia for medical treatment and rehabilitation.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a post on X that the United Arab Emirates had brokered the exchange, the 55th since February 2022.
