Consistency Lifts Newport Harbor Yacht Club to 2024 Morgan Cup
Newport Harbor Yacht Club
August 27, 2024
There’s no official AP ranking for keelboat team racing, but if there were, it would be hard to argue against Newport Harbor Yacht Club , from Newport Beach, California, currently occupying the top spot. With a win at its Baldwin Cup in April and now a win in the Morgan Cup held at the New York Yacht Club Harbour Court, the NHYC team-racing squad can claim simultaneous ownership of two of the most prestigious team-racing trophies in the world.
“This is super exciting,” said Jake La Dow, team captain for NHYC. “This is an event that we’ve targeted for a long time. We got second last year with the same core group. Our goal this year was to come back and win. We were just thrilled to cross that last race in a 1-2-3 [winning combination]. We knew that if we won that final race, we would win the event, and so as soon as we crossed the line we started cheering.”
Second place was decided via a tiebreaker with New York Yacht Club, Levesque edging out Corinthian Yacht Club of Marblehead, Massachusetts, on the basis of a better head-to-head record. Royal Thames Yacht Club finished fourth with Larchmont Yacht Club rounding out the top five.
While the conditions covered a broad range over the three-day event—with gusts into the mid 20s on Friday and then a morning delay today while the teams waited for the breeze to fill in—consistency on the racecourse regardless of the wind strength was crucial to the overall win.
“As a team, we started very consistently all event,” said La Dow. “I think we only had maybe one or two races where we were really disadvantaged off the starting line. So [our keys to victory were] being very consistent on the starts, being disciplined in our team racing, really focusing on sailing the boats well first and just keeping it simple.”
La Dow was quick to credit the entire 12-person squad, especially when it came to having success in the breezier conditions that kicked the regatta off with a bang on Friday.
“The skippers get a lot of the credit,” said La Dow. “I’m doing this interview, but any of our team could be doing this right now. It really is a huge effort for the crew. Just sailing the boats is hard, and it takes all four people in the boat to do that well, nailing the pole on the jibe, flying the spinnaker correctly. If any one piece is out of place or not working at a high level, the whole mission fails. For those ranges and conditions, especially, it’s all down to the crew.”
And when it comes to getting the crew trained for these events, there’s no substitute for an engaged yacht club.
“It starts with our club, Newport Harbor Yacht Club ,” said La Dow. “We have a ton of support to go out and do these types of events. We get out for weekly practices and weekend regattas quite a lot throughout the year. It’s a big club effort.”

Located in the heart of the balboa peninsula, this fairly newly renovated location boasts all the elements you'd come to expect from an exclusive yacht club. I was invited by friends to imbibe in sunset drinks and enjoy the grounds on a lazy Sunday afternoon. The space was definitely not crowded so I had free reign to explore with reckless abandon. Pleasant views of the bay abound on upper and lower decks with limited dining and drink menus to boot. Service was pleasant and the views were nice. They had a charming gift shop at the entrance, as well. Overall, I had a positive first experience here. I could imagine private parties and boat show viewing events would be a hit here with guests as they offer plenty of private rooms to choose from to cater to various events from weddings banquets and family get togethers.

Amazing service at NHYC. José was friendly and helpful with refueling my boat. The staff was happy to assist me, and I felt like family even though I was just visiting. Clean facilities, great people. I highly recommend them. Thanks guys!
Came here for a business meeting. First off the place was really nice, had a lot of trophies, open views, and clean spaces catered for the yacht lifestyle. Weirdly enough the meeting we had was located in a side part of the building, it was big enough to just fit all 9 of our team members who attended the meeting. In terms of the dining experience, the waiter we had was very attentive and catered to our orders, also providing great recommendations for the daily soups and entrees. I ordered the buttersquash soup with half a buffalo mozzarella chicken sandwich. However, the waiter notified me that the buttersquash soup was actually a pumpkin soup, which was fine, but caught me by surprise. For the sandwich, it was GOOD, but I wish the "half" was a little larger than what I got originally. Would love to try the other items next time. So overall, nice venue for events and fancy dining. Portions and price of the food? Eh...

An amazing place. Thoughtfully rebuilt from The ground up. Amazing people and staff. Never had a questionable time here. Absolutely love it.
My partner and I went to Newport Harbor Yacht Club for lunch while you're visiting Newport Beach, and overall, it had some good views, but the service left something to be desired. This is a private club, so our friend leaving a guest pass at the reception was the only way we're able to eat lunch here. That sort of limits who can go here, which is kind of the point. We sat down right along the water, and but we had to wait a good while for anyone to really notice us. That's kind of frustrating when servers are running past you but don't acknowledge you. Eventually, someone came around, and we ordered lunch. They are known for their mai tais, and the one I ordered was extremely strong. Extremely. The menu is not very expansive. Their lettuce wrap appetizers was somewhat healthy, but messy. But they did have a good assortment of salads. My partner's carne asada taco salad was delicious, as was my crabcake salad. The entrées definitely were the standout. Overall, this place has good views and good food. Obviously the atmosphere is very clubby, and I noticed they were selling vineyard vines ties in the lobby for $99. That pretty much tells you all you to know.

Wonderful! The remodel is absolutely gorgeous, the staff is professional and personal and the view can't be beat! Susan at reception greets with a smile and is extremely helpful, membership manager Joie is absolutely amazing with knowledge and kindness, and Adrien bartending makes the best Manhattan in So Cal! Thank you!
I was very excited to come here with my daughter for FJ Nationals, which NHYC hosted. Nice location and beautiful view. I came from a reciprocating yacht club. The service was great for its members, but the servers ignored me and were actually quite rude. Not the most gracious hosts, so not sure why they decided to host the regatta. I've been to yacht clubs throughout SoCal, big and small, and the experience at NHYC pales in comparison. The food was adequate, but if you order the BLT (which I don't recommend) make sure to request that the bread be toasted. As a side note, they have a very limited selection of beer.
Had a underwhelming, bland and cold dinner on their balcony and it smelt like rotten eggs! For an expensive dinner, I found it a total waste of money. Moreover, I couldn't help but notice on the water - all of their yacht club members were not following right of way laws and just messing about in the middle of the bay, totally in the way of all other boats. You could tell how inconvenient it was, with boaters crashing into the sea walls and docks just trying to avoid them! Unreal disrespect for maritime law. This place does not deserve the title of "yacht club".
I love NHYC. My partner and I go often and it is our go to place for dinner and drinks. The new building is beautiful, the staff are personable and helpful and there food is really good. It is like a local "cheers"...everyone is so friendly. You must have the Mai Tai's, they are amazing!!
The best part of NHYC is by far the view--can't beat eating dinner while the sun is setting. The food itself is decent, but the service is always excellent. And of course, the cappuccino ice cream is always amazing!

Orange County Yacht Clubs and Why They’re Great
One of the best ways to experience Orange County is by water, and the coastal cities that line the county are filled with boating enthusiasts and their favorite yacht club homes. Here are a few yacht clubs for boaters looking for a home to house their vessel or a community to join.
Huntington Harbour Yacht Club
The HHYC was formed in October of 1965 and is a welcoming place for boating and non-boating enthusiasts alike. Since 1966 the club has been a member of the Southern California Yachting Association, attaining senior membership in 1981. The club is also a current member of the United States Sailing Association and has a sailing school that trains more than 40 young sailors each year while also maintaining a competitive sailing program that has produced a good number of nationally ranked sailors, including crewmembers on the American entry in the America’s Cup racing series. In addition, traveling members of the HHYC are welcomed to clubs all over the world.
“Evenings are for our members and their guests to enjoy casual dining and drinks in the Commodores Lounge, said HHYC Club Manager Frank DiLapo in an email from Sept. 5. “Sunday’s the Club host Breakfast by the Bay, this meal period is open to the public. It is a wonderful opportunity for those who would like to learn more about the Club and experience this special place. The Club’s event calendar is chock full of celebratory parties for members’ enjoyment, many including live dance music. Finally, we are also respected for our robust Huntington Harbour Sailing Foundation, where we teach local children self-esteem and teamwork while introducing them to sailing. We have over 50 boats in inventory, including Sabots, CFJs, Lidos, and a new fleet of Cubes and Bics; many are available for our members to check out.”
The HHYC welcomes new members all year round and is happy to provide additional information about the club upon request.
According to SCYA, the Membership costs are:
Initiation fee: $850
Dues: $900 for a family, $575 for a single, and $50 for a junior member.

Newport Harbor Yacht Club
The NHYC, established in 1916, is located on the Balboa Peninsula and is part of the SCYA. It offers a physical and social environment for its members to pursue yachting, yacht racing, and sportsmanship.
NHYC also represents the Newport Harbor Sailing Foundation which has provided training and instruction to youths since 1997.
This private club welcomes reciprocal visitors who can provide a current membership card from the yacht club. The club offers different dining facilities as well as the Pirate’s Den Bar. In addition, the venue has showers and restrooms available 24 hours a day.
The club is known for several signature races between Feb. and March, including the Islands race, Newport to Cabo Race, Baldwin Cup Team Race, and the Long Point Race Week.
In addition, they offer a junior sailing program.
NHYC is currently accepting new members. However, new members must be nominated by a current member. Initiation fees and monthly dues are confidential.

Dana Point Yacht Club
The Dana Point Yacht Club was founded in 1952 and has remained a spirited part of the SoCal yachting community with events and activities that include the entire family. Members get access to wine dinners, live music, and a lineup of busy cruise and race schedules.
A DPYC is known for its annual Richard Henry Dana Charity Regatta, a harbor event that brings together the yacht club community to benefit the Dana Point 5th Maritime Regiment Support Group.
The club has a junior sailing program, competitive racing opportunities from local fleets to championship regattas, cruising fleet activities with organized outings to destinations in SoCal and beyond, fishing excursions with monthly educational angler meetings, dining a bar facilities, and even has a wine club.
The DPYC welcomes visitors and offers guests slips for incoming sailors and is also a member of SCYA. In addition, it’s a great venue that holds private events such as weddings, galas, and celebrations of all types with its oceanfront ballroom.
According to SCYA.org, the club is accepting membership applications. Call the office for details at (949) 496- 2900.

The Top 50 Most Exclusive Yacht Clubs In The World Honored With Platinum Status
The rich and famous are not merely looking for the best place to anchor their yachts; they are also seeking out exclusive memberships in stunning destinations, all offering luxury amenities and, of course, bragging rights. These exclusive yachting clubs with often outrageous initiation fees, provide luxurious clubhouses, and provide accommodations for yachties who want to get their land legs. Most of them provide high-end concierge service to its members as well as Michelin-star quality restaurants and more.
Yacht Clubs have been recognized in the Platinum Clubs of America elections for more than 20 years. According to the Platinum Club, “Recognition in the following categories is important in the selection of Platinum status; Tradition, history, and heritage, a respected membership, excellence in amenities, exceptional service, adapting to changing times, and overall experience.
I spoke with the President of Club Leaders Forum, David V. Smith, about the selection, and he says, “we created an alphabetical selection this time as opposed to by rank because we felt that it was challenging to compare a yacht club in Ireland with a yacht club in Singapore, as amenities, location and facilities do vary quite a lot. The yachting and boating world is a different and unique culture, typically a little more relaxed and not as formal as country clubs and golf clubs. However, many of the world’s finest yacht clubs have wonderful history and traditions, with a great sense of camaraderie among their members. Certain yacht clubs were selected by the Panel not necessarily for their facilities and amenities but in their recognition of hosting world class sailing regattas and events.”
Here are the top 50 most exclusive yacht clubs worldwide being awarded the ultimate Platinum Status for 2021.
