Vince Lazzara started Columbia Yachts in 1956, becoming Lazzara Yacht Corp. In 1991 with his sons, Brad and Dick. In 2015, it was sold to Avanti Ocean Group and the next generation of the Lazzara family, who turned the yard into a refit facility and bought the shipyard across the street as a new construction facility. If you look at the area on Google here , the original yard was on the south side of W. Tyson Avenue, in the area between Bertram Yachts and Mobro Marine, and the second yard, across the street, which had been operated by Trident Yachts, WestShip World Yachts and Riverhawk Sea Frames, is now called Gulf Stream Yachts. The Lazzaras now build yachts in Turkey.

Last of a Breed: Meet Lazzara Yachts’ Dick Lazzara
You know you want it...
Mocka Jumbies and Rum...
Pride and dedication to the pursuit of perfection are a Lazzara family tradition. Dick Lazzara learned that ethos from his Pop, Vince, in Chicago, where the elder Lazzara built his first fiberglass sailboat in 1954.
Dick started sailing and fishing at age three on Lake Michigan. He swapped shoveling snow for sand at age nine when the family moved to St. Petersburg, Fla. He joined his father in the family business, Gulfstar, building trawlers and motor sailers in 1974.
Now at age 60, the patriarch of a privately held, third-generation family company, Dick has guided his sons, Joey, Tony and Richie into different specialized disciplines. But Dick Lazzara is the last of a dying breed, as few of today’s yacht manufacturer/owners can design, engineer, build, sell and race both sailing and power yachts.
Dick Lazzara grew up with industry icons, learning design purism from Olin Stephens, the execution of craftsmanship from Henry Hinckley, and brokerage from Dick Bertram. He’s raced sailboats in the Southern Ocean Racing Circuit and sailed one designs. He loves the Bahamas, having spent much time at his father’s residence on Cat Cay.
In 1971, Lazzara served with the Coast Guard in the North Atlantic during the Vietnam War. He was assigned to the secret service in 1972 to a presidential support detail in Miami to protect President Nixon before joining Gulfstar two years later.
Family Legacy For a cruising boat, the Gulfstar was very good upwind. Today the Lazzara family is still renowned for striking a nice balance between design, function, quality and production at an affordable price: the key to successful mass production.
“It was a fast indoctrination to yacht building with 400 other employees,” Lazzara recalls.
Gulfstar merged with Viking in 1987, and in 1991 Dick opened Lazzara Yachts with his father and his brother, Brad.
“Dad’s the first one there in the morning and the last to leave at night,” says his son, Joey. “He leads by example.”
Lazzara Yachts is still an innovator in design and manufacturing processes. The Lazzara Quad 75 is known for its joystick maneuverability and smart control systems powered by four Volvo Penta IPS 600 units with a counter-rotating, forward facing propeller.
The LSX 64, their latest introduction, is an open concept express yacht topping out at 35 knots. The split-level is one of the LSX’s attractive features – something Poppa Vince did with his sailboats and trawlers for years, where you’re at the helm and look down into the galley. It’s kind of a New York loft look.
“I never thought my Dad would ever go down that road, but he did,” says son, Joey. “It was very difficult to get him to go so dark at the beginning. The whole build was a contrast between dark and light. Now dark wood and light fabric is a hot trend.”
Life in the fast lane Lazzara’s son, Joey, joined the company after Dick had a horrific accident in 2001 while racing offshore powerboats.
“It was a long, tough road for my family and they really hung together,” Dick says. “They didn’t know whether or not I would live for over a month (after the accident).”
It’s hard to believe that a handsome man like Dick Lazzara hovered near death for a month or suffered severe facial trauma. His neighbors in Lithia, Fla., who know him as a rancher breeding Clydesdales, would be surprised to know he raced boats in a fast-paced lifestyle.
He crashed at 90 miles per hour, resulting in life-threatening injuries, including a fractured sinus cavity. He was told to expect blindness within three years. His jaws were wired shut and he had seven titanium plates, an optical metal screen and more than 400 stitches.
Lazzara was fortunate to survive the accident and come back to the yachts that are his passion, the company that he has nurtured, and the family that he loves. He is a relaxed, calm man who’s slowed down. After living a fast life for years, the 10-acre ranch and the horses are his hobby and refuge.
“Being at the ranch is like the water in Key West,” Dick says. “It is so peaceful and quiet out in the middle of nowhere with the stars out at night.”
For Lazzara, the ranch provides serenity, refreshing his brain to provide innovative ideas for boats. It keeps his feet on the ground, which is important for an executive traveling the world with million dollar yachts and wealthy people.
“God only gave us so many days on earth,” he says. “The ones at sea don’t count against you.”
Don't Miss a Beat!
Stay in the loop with the Caribbean
I recently purchased a Gulstar39 that had sailed from the USA to Australia I have been in the Marine industry for 40 plus years And what Dick Lazzara did with this design is pure genius! O intend to fully restore her bavk to her former glory She sails like a witch! I had 9.2 knots on the log yesterfay sailing out to Moreton Island here is Brisbane Exceptional She is so precice on balance and handling One incredible yacht for her day in both design and build Thank you Dick Lazzara for your brilliance
Dick,we had lived aboard/cruised our beautiful 50′ Gulfstar for 15 years. My husband is a mechanical engineer so always kept in top notch condition. It has been for sale in Jacksonville for almost 2 years and we are confounded by why it’s not selling??!! Any tips? Everyone loves her but…. Kathie Grove
I worked in tooling department at Gulfstar and built the 47 Sailmaster, 44 sailboat and 44 Trawaler. It was a fun place to work while attending college at USF. Ar-Men Hess was real character. Nick Ershimono and Duke Snyder were also fun to work with.

Creating contemporary luxury yachts with sleek good looks and fine detailing, Lazzara Yachts are an American yacht building tradition. Founded in Tampa, Florida, the Lazzara yachts for sale are extremely popular on the market today. With a range of yachts spanning smaller sports yacht to a 100-plus-foot (30.48m) luxury yachts to impressive superyachts that push the boundaries of performance and style, there truly is a Lazzara yacht for every taste. The brand is proud of its, multi-generational heritage and its dedication to utilizing the finest materials, fabrications and craftsmanship in building its luxury yachts. High quality and high performance are two things you can expect from a Lazzara yacht.
Pure American Heritage
While the Lazzara Yachts we know today opened its doors in 1990, the brand’s heritage harkens back to 1955. Vince Lazzara teamed up with AeroMarine to build his own 40-foot (12.1m) sailboat and thus the history of Lazzara began. The sailboat was built utilizing fiberglass applications Vince himself created. After the successful build, he decided to start his own line of fiberglass sailboats. Columbia Yachts was opened in 1960. Vince sold the company seven years later and founded Gulfstar in the early 1970s after moving to Florida. Gulfstar became known for its high-performance sailboats. In the 1980s, Brad and Dick Lazzara, Vince’s sons, joined the family business. During their time with the company, Brad’s and Dick’s focus shifted from sailing to an interest in motor yachts. In 1990, Brad and Dick ventured out on their own, creating Lazzara Yacht Corporation. Dedicated to building luxury cruising motor yachts and custom yachts, the brand leads the industry in modernization, design aesthetics and quality. In 1992, the first yacht brandishing the Lazzara name, a 76-foot (23.1m) motor yacht, was launched. Lazzara has won awards for its unique designs and has patented processes that aid in the building of their luxury yachts. Located in Tampa, Florida, Lazzara boasts three generations of yacht building. The brand’s semi-custom composite yachts are exceptional and make enjoying life on the water a breeze.
“Lazzara yachts for sale are extremely popular on the market,” says Northrop & Johnson Sales Broker Sean Doyle.“Semi-custom yachts are a best-of-both-worlds’ scenario for many owners. Lazzara yachts offer buyers the timeliness of a production yacht with the ability to tailor it to your own needs. One of the best things about Lazzara yachts is how well they keep their value thanks to their timeless design and their high build quality. Pre-owned Lazzara yachts for sale are extremely popular on the market and often move quickly. The brand offers a range that is ideal for any type of owner. Their range also allows first-time owners to start off with a smaller yacht and then move up in size with the brand as their wants and needs grow.”
Dedicated to its owners, Lazzara Yachts use to have the “Lazzara Yachts University,” a three-day course taught by the brand that owners would attend before their yacht is delivered. This fun and informative course allowed owners and even captains to understand the operations of the yacht, all aspects of the build and so much more. This innovative approach to yacht ownership by Lazzara yachts was only one facet of the brand’s true commitment to the yachting community. Knowledge and innovation are two keystones of the Lazzara brand. One of the ground-breaking components of the brand is its Integrated Ships Information System (ISIS), which is a monitoring system that evaluates the yacht’s operating systems, ensuring safety. This technology is standard on all Lazzara yachts. In 2019, Lazzara yachts acquired a shipyard in Turkey, further enhancing the company’s status on the global market.
The sleek, stylish LSX 92 is an eye-catching yacht sporting speed, power and sex appeal

Lazzara Yachts had a long history before the company was branded Lazzara. Vince Lazzara built the first large fiberglass sailing yacht in 1956, which later became Columbia Yachts, a well-known line of fiberglass sailboats. By 1970, he founded another successful company Gulfstar Yachts, building both sailboats and motoryachts. By 1991, his sons Dick and Brad Lazzara formed Lazzara Yacht Corporation and the first Lazzara, a 76’ motor yacht, rolled off the assembly line in 1993. Within two years, the industries first enclosed flybridge hit market, the 80’ Lazzara Skylounge. Today, Lazzara’s yachts range from 68 feet to 105 feet, with flybridge and enclosed bridge models, featuring Italian-like styles and craftsmanship, but with auto-industry production line efficiency. Since then, Lazzara Yachts has won a number of top awards, including the MTU “Zero Defect” award in 1994 to the more recent 2000 Showboats International award for semi-custom yachts and the International Superyacht Design award for best power in the 23-32m range. The American Society of Interior Designers has recognized Lazzara yachts repeatedly. Years of preparation, designing and redesigning of both the yacht and the factory was needed to produce Lazzara’s yachts. The engineering concepts and assembly techniques, many holding Lazzara patents, allow for state-of-the-art construction under the strictest quality control. Lazzara’s design and construction philosophy is embodied in the “Horizontal Integration” system of yacht building. Adopted from the auto industry, this quasi-production line operation takes fully completed components, built to Lazzara’s exacting standards, and integrates them methodically on a precise timetable to create the finished product. Located in Tampa, Florida, Lazzara employs nearly 300 dedicated craftsmen in modern facility that accommodates building, refit and repair, with an industry-leading after sale support program.

Lazzara Yachts has a reputation for producing high-performance, Euro-inspired motor yachts
Since launching its yacht building program in 1990, Lazzara Yachts has developed a reputation for producing high-performance, Euro-inspired motor yachts. Today, the Tampa, Florida-based manufacturer offers a full range of sleek, contemporary yachts in the 75- to 115-foot range.
A signature feature: Lazzara’s motor yachts are built for performance and their design has been influenced by the sporty Italian yachts that become popular in the 1990s. With sporty exteriors and high-performance motors, these vessels are designed to deliver comfort cruising on the open sea.
Throughout its history, Lazzara Yachts has launched a number of successful motor yachts, including the Lazzara 76, Lazzara 106 and the Lazzara 110. In recent years, Lazzara rebranded into Lazzara Custom Yachts, to focus on the custom yacht building niche.
History of Lazzara Yachts
The Lazzara brand has long ties to the ship building industry. Originally, Vince Lazzara founded Columbia Yachts in the 1960s. The Southern California-based company pioneered fiberglass sailboat construction, and quickly become one of the most popular sailboat manufacturers on the West Coast.
In the 1970s, Lazzara and his sons went on to found Gulfstar Yachts, with a focus on fiberglass sailboats and motor yachts. Gulfstar had a highly successful run, developing a complete range of production yachts, before ultimately merging with Viking Yachts in the early 1990s.
The latest iteration of Lazzara was founded in 1990. Sons Brad and Dick Lazzara founded Lazzara Yachts to focus on producing completely custom fiberglass motor yachts. One of the first Lazzara Yachts to hit the market was the Lazzara 76, an athletic, 76-foot motor yacht – which quickly become a favorite choice of yacht buyers. Throughout the years, Lazzara has continued to developed premium motor yachts, with complete customization options. The result: No two yachts Lazzara Custom Yachts produces are the same.
Popular Lazzara Models
Over the last three decades, Lazzara Custom Yachts has launched a number of notable models, including the Lazzara 76, Lazzara 68 and Lazzara 106. Today, these remain some of the company’s most widely available yachts for charter.
Lazzara 68 – Launched in the mid-2000s, the Lazzara 68 features an athletic profile, topped with a flying bridge. (Charter yacht DIVINE DESTINY is a custom Lazzara 68, which was recently refit.) The Lazzara 68’s interiors also feature a spacious salon, with accommodations for up to 6 guests.
Lazzara 76 – When it was initially launched in 1992, the Lazzara 76 was notable for being one of the first American-built yachts to incorporate Italian motor yacht styling. The exterior, with its open bridge, and sleek lines boasts tons of Euro inspiration, and its interiors were designed with an open, spacious plan. Charter yacht CALLIOPE is a 2011 version of the Lazzara 76.
Lazzara 106 – Another 2007 launch, the Lazzara 106 is the epitome of the company’s Italian-inspired design heritage. The 106 boats flowing exterior lines, with a flybridge topping the pilothouse. Inside, the 106 features an open, spacious plan, perfect for entertaining guests and sleeps up to 8. Charter yacht GALE WINDS is customized Lazzara 106, a favorite for Bahamas and Florida charters.
Key Features of Lazzara Yachts
What makes a Lazzara Custom Yacht special? The Tampa-based manufacturer has a number of design signatures, which have long been used across its entire range. A few key features include:
Euro-Inspired Designs – Lazzara Custom Yachts have signature athletic profiles. All of their yachts – from the 68 up to the 110 – feature flowing lines (a long common feature in the Italian yacht building industry), and most feature open flybridges.
High Performance – True to their sporty statures, Lazzara yachts are designed for high-speed cruising. Most offer top speeds up to 30 knots, while cruise at about 20 knots.
Comfortable, Open Interiors – Although Lazzara interiors are custom and built to owner specifications, their layouts are designed for comfortable entertaining. With spacious salons, ample deck space and large staterooms, these yachts deliver a refined yachting experience.

The 31m superyacht with aerospace-grade hull materials launching soon
Is it possible for a vessel to last a lifetime? According to Lazzara Yachts, it is. The American yacht builder takes pride in being an “unconventional builder”, embracing a philosophy of “quality over quantity” that prioritises using superior materials and advanced construction techniques, resulting in yachts that are built to last. The UHV 100 , a 30.5-metre displacement yacht, exemplifies this ethos, featuring aerospace-grade hull materials that promise premium performance. As Lazzara Yachts prepares for the UHV 100’s grand launch in February 2025, BOAT unpacks what makes it a true standout on the market.
Stepping away from steel
While steel and aluminium are often seen as the standard in yacht construction, Lazzara Yachts takes a different approach, challenging this convention by using epoxy reinforced e-glass for its hulls. Insights from the aerospace industry support the decision to use this material. AZoM, a leading publication in materials science, notes that graphite-epoxy composites, similar to those used by Lazzara, have become increasingly popular in commercial aircraft like the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. These composites are valued for their durability, structural integrity and performance.
Epoxy offers several key benefits that makes it ideal for yacht construction. It provides resistance to wear, corrosion and impact, which translates to a longer-lasting structure with significantly reduced maintenance costs - essentially offering a near-lifetime guarantee against structural changes. It also ensures better bonding, which enhances structural integrity and reduces the likelihood of delamination, resulting in a more reliable and safer vessel.
Additionally, its high strength-to-weight ratio ensures that the yacht remains strong without being overly heavy, contributing to better agility and easier handling, and its lighter weight compared to traditional materials improves fuel efficiency. Aesthetically, the finish is smoother, and the material's ability to be moulded into complex shapes allows for greater creativity in design and customisation. What’s more, enhanced thermal and acoustic insulation further improves onboard comfort by reducing noise and maintaining a stable internal temperature.
Quality construction
Not only does the UHV 100’s hull material deliver longevity and performance, but the shipyard's construction techniques further contribute to its quality build. Notably, the shipyard opted to forgo traditional through-hulls, instead placing sea chests above the waterline. This allows maintenance tasks to be carried out in the engine room while the yacht stays in the water, eliminating the need for costly haul-outs for many service procedures.
In keeping with its philosophy of durability, Lazzara replaces flexible hoses with hard piping throughout the vessel. The yacht is also equipped with a universal power input, capable of adapting to any voltage in America or Europe.
For long-range cruising, reliability is paramount. Lazzara incorporates redundancy systems, ensuring that all essential functions are backed up in case of failure. This feature is particularly important for extended journeys, offering peace of mind to both crew and guests. With a range of 1,100 nautical miles at a cruising speed of 12 knots and a low fuel consumption rate of approximately 90 litres per hour at 10 knots, the UHV 100 is designed for efficient, long-distance travel.
"Our top priority in every build is safety and quality," explains Deniz Diduk, director of marketing and business development at Lazzara Yachts. "We are meticulous about ensuring our yachts are designed for maximum safety and seaworthiness. For instance, our yachts are constructed without through-hulls, significantly reducing the risk of water intrusion and simplifying maintenance. We also integrate redundant systems and an advanced alarm monitoring system to minimise the likelihood of equipment failures and human error."
Spacious and study interiors
The UHV 100, where "UHV" stands for "ultra-high volume", boasts a substantial total area of 400 square metres. The yacht’s design emphasises spaciousness, with notable features such as a 42-square-metre main saloon and a 34-square-metre master cabin located on the main deck forward.
Lazzara Yachts takes pride in building the interior components entirely in-house, allowing for better control over quality. Many elements, from stainless steel fixtures to custom furniture, are designed and constructed on-site using 3D engineering. The shipyard's facilities include specialised areas for electrical work, painting, plumbing, upholstery and more.
The interiors are not only spacious and sturdy but also feature natural, environmentally certified components throughout. Materials such as marine plywood, natural leather and bamboo are integrated into the design, enhancing both the aesthetic appeal and the environmental responsibility of the yacht.

Now for the piece de resistance : at the press of a button, huge hull sections on each side lower to almost sea level, doubling the size of the rear deck and creating an impressive beach club.
Want to take a dip, or step right on to your jet ski, tender or paddle board? The large teak swim platform can lower or rise up, by pushing another button.
And if you want to keep your back deck private, there’s a roomy forward deck entertainment area—Lazzara calls it the “bow lounge”—that features a stretch-out, U-shaped sofa and a huge sunpad.
These are just a few of the innovations that come with the all-new Lazzara Limited Edition LSX 67, set to make its global debut in Florida early next year.
“We’ve created a 67-foot sport express cruiser that feels like a much bigger, more spacious yacht,” Deniz Diduk, Lazzara Yachts ‘ Istanbul-based marketing director tells Robb Report , with some understatement.
While this dramatically styled yacht was designed at Lazzara’s Tampa headquarters, the LSX 67 was built in Turkey by parent company Euro Marine Group.
This head-turning fast cruiser is distinguished by its dramatic ax bow and vast, single-piece glass windscreen that flows back into a curved roof with a large opening glass sunroof.
And this first, just-launched production boat is finished in a glorious shade of deep, dark blue, called Lazzara Blue, which is unique to the Limited Edition LSX 67. It’s complemented by splashes of lighter, aqua blue highlighting the hull windows.
The yacht’s composite hull and superstructure are molded from a concoction of epoxy resin, E-glass and carbon fiber to create high strength with reduced weight. And the hull does away with traditional through-hull openings in favor of so-called sea chests—to reduce the risk of water intrusion.
“Part of our DNA is also having highly redundant systems throughout the yacht to allow components to be serviced without the interruption of service on board. It’s designed to give an owner real peace of mind,” says Diduk.
To match the Lazzara’s sport-boat lines, the planing 35-ton yacht is powered by twin 1,000-horsepower Volvo IPS 1350 diesels with pod drives. Top speed is an estimated 38 mph, with 32 mph cruising. And with a draft of just 4’9”, the LSX 67 should be perfect for shallow-water Bahamian excursions.
Accommodations-wise, on the main level there’s a nicely laid out, though compact, salon with its L-shaped sofa facing a well-equipped galley. Sliding glass doors open out onto the back-deck dining area with wide, floating steps leading down to the beach club.
Forward in the bow is an ample-sized VIP ensuite cabin, with a corridor from the lower galley leading back to a twin-bed guest cabin and into the master suite.
Throughout the yacht, the quality and craftsmanship are apparent. From the high-gloss woodwork to the hand-stitched leather and recessed lighting, everything looks and feels a cut above.
