It takes into consideration "reported" sail area, displacement and length at waterline. The higher the number the faster speed prediction for the boat. A cat with a number 0.6 is likely to sail 6kts in 10kts wind, a cat with a number of 0.7 is likely to sail at 7kts in 10kts wind. KSP = (Lwl*SA÷D)^0.5*0.5

Fin keel. The Contessa 35 is equipped with a fin keel. A boat with a fin keel is more manoeuvrable but has less directional stability than a similar boat with a full keel. The keel is made of lead. Compared with iron, lead has the advantage of being 44% heavier, which allows a smaller keel and hence less water resistance and higher speed.

Worries about spade rudders and fin keels seem to be generated by guys who don't like getting passed by other boats. The Cal 40 - a popular design with spade rudder and fin keel - was first built in 1963. Things happen to any boat.

  7. Contessa 32, are they really that good?

Bear in mind that the Co32 is a 1971 design, and by 1979 the same designer drew the Sadler 32, which was specifically intended to be a better boat, and stretched and tweaked in the early 1980s into the Sadler 34. The Contessa is prettier, personally I believe the Sadlers are overall better. The other fin and skeg contemporary is the Rival 32/34.

  8. CONTESSA 35: Reviews, Specifications, Built, Engine

If you are a boat enthusiast looking to get more information on specs, built, make, etc. of different boats, then here is a complete review of CONTESSA 35. Built by Jeremy Rogers Ltd. and designed by Doug Peterson, the boat was first built in 1974. It has a hull type of Fin w/spade rudder and LOA is 10.82. Its sail area/displacement ratio 17.64.

  9. Frac rigs and Contessa 35

The Contessa 35 is a similar hull form to the Ericson. The Contessa's with the reputation for being seaworthy are the Contessa 32's and the later Contessa 33's. The Contessa 35's were not an expecially good offshore design. Depending on the design of rig, baby stays can be used in concert with backstays to achieve some of the mast bend control ...

  10. Contessa 35

The Contessa 35 is a slightly extended transom version of the prototypical IOR Peterson 34. If that early IOR design concept interests you, Peterson 34's from various manufacturers are much more common than the comparatively rare Contessa 35 version and most of the Peterson 34's versions had equal or better build quality and are easier to maintain.

  11. Want to Buy: Contessa 35

There are also a couple of Contessa 38's that seem the same internals as a 35 but just like to pay more in the marina. So, back to my wanting to buy an alternative to the Contessa 35. Please, today would be nice. A lot will depend on where you are located. Here in North America you'll only find the 26 and 32.

  12. Contessa 32

The Contessa 32 is one of the most successful cruiser racers of the last 30 years - and it's easy to see why. She's a joy to sail on the wind, quick on a reach, and well set up for spinnaker work downwind. With a dry weight of over four tonnes, a deep forefoot leading to a long fin keel and a skeg-mounted rudder, she's a solid sea-boat ...

  13. Question about replacement of engine

I have a Contessa 35 sailboat from 1977. The engine is the original and it is time to replace it with a new one. My first question: Is there a Contessa 35 owner in this forum, who has experience with the installation. The installation seems to be quite complicated. The new engine can not be placed on the old foundation and it is necessary to make some fittings.

  14. Contessa 32: A brand new classic

Other boats have certainly improved on these classic designs but the Contessa 32 has gained a cult-like status, complete with an ardent band of followers; 13 boats competed in Cowes Week last year and 15 took part in the nationals, so the class is in rude health. 'There are enough 32s around to make them instantly recognisable,' says Jessie.

  15. Contessa 38

Contessa 38. In appearance, this is a stretched Contessa 32 and was designed by David Allan-Williams with this intention. By the time of her launch in 1982, however, the long, lean, low hull could no longer offer the accommodation most people were looking for at this size. The galley is decidedly cramped and the saloon, too, is on the small side.

Notes. The CONTESSA 32 was first built at the Jeremy Rogers Ltd.. When introduced at the London boat show of 1973, it was awarded "Boat of the Show". Since then the yard built over 700. 18. The Contessa 32 ?

I can confirm what Alex says, the boat in the video is definitely a Contessa 35. I have corresponded with Erik (the sailor in the video) and he confirmed it. The 35 was a Doug Peterson design intended primarily for racing. It is 20% wider than the 32 and 50% heavier, with a greater ballast ratio for increased stiffness. It also has a spade rudder.

  19. Contessa 34. Has anyone got a good word to say?

1436 posts · Joined 2015. #4 · Feb 3, 2021. From SailboatData dot com: The 32 was designed by David Sadler, designer of the venerable blue water capable Contessa 26. The 34 and 35 were designed by Doug Peterson. The 32 has a more substantial keel and better supported rudder. The 34 and 35 have spade rudders.

  20. Contessa 34

Contessa 34. Introduced in 1982, this Doug Peterson-designed cruiser-racer was based on the ill-fated OOD34 which suffered, perhaps unfairly, for her safety record in the 1979 Fastnet. This version had a more cruising-orientated interior and improved stability, thanks to a shallower but heavier keel and a cut-down rig.

A boat with a BN of 1.6 or greater is a boat that will be reefed often in offshore cruising. Derek Harvey, "Multihulls for Cruising and Racing", International Marine, Camden, Maine, 1991, states that a BN of 1 is generally accepted as the dividing line between so-called slow and fast multihulls.
