Welcome to kidship.

annapolis yacht club sailing camp

Registration for KidShip 2025 Opens in November

KidShip offers an exciting range of sailing courses suitable for all levels, from beginners to advanced sailors.

At KidShip, the safety of our young sailors is always our top priority. All campers are required to wear a life jacket at all times while on or near the water. We strive to provide a safe and enjoyable learning environment for all participants, using innovative teaching methods. Our courses are led by our team of kid-friendly sailing instructors, ensuring a positive and nurturing experience.

During their time with us, your child will develop an understanding of various aspects of sailing, including boat parts, boat handling, sailing mechanics, rules of the road, boating safety, and basic navigation. We believe in hands-on learning, encouraging your child to put their skills into practice and become proficient in them.

In addition to gaining invaluable knowledge about sailing, your child will also have the chance to build social connections with other campers. Our private beach provides the perfect setting for building friendships, and our Wednesday pizza lunch and Friday ice cream party add to the excitement of the week.

Discover the joy of sailing and witness your child’s love for the water flourish at KidShip.

Warrior Sailing Program at Annapolis Yacht Club

Posted November 22, 2023

Warrior Sailing program returns to Annapolis

“When service men and women put their time as a warrior behind them, physical and mental wounds from sacrifices made during service can make it very difficult to find purpose and happiness afterward. Warrior Sailing is the first Veteran’s programming I’ve attended where I’ve been introduced to a new activity that I can imagine shaping the future of my life for the better.” - Scott Thomas, Annapolis Basic Training Camp Participant.

Warrior Sailing in Annapolis

The Warrior Sailing Program returned to Annapolis for their seventh Basic Training Camp at the Annapolis Yacht Club (AYC). Program Manager Cory Kapes was happy to report that 21 wounded, ill, and injured veterans finished the course and are now part of the sport. Kapes said, “It’s always great to come back. With a strong sailing community and military culture, Annapolis is a perfect fit for us. We are so grateful for the hospitality of AYC at the Sailing Center, Buddy’s Crabs and Ribs, Freedom Hill Coffee Roasters, the Annapolis Yacht Club Foundation , and photographer Will Keyworth to make the week memorable for the warriors and seven coaches.”

Warrior Sailing in Annapolis

Under the umbrella of the USMMA Sailing Foundation , Warrior Sailing focuses on sailing skill development for veterans. Coaching techniques accommodate cognitive and mental health challenges and include specialized equipment to compensate for physical difficulties, allowing equal participation for all. More than 650 veterans have graduated from the Basic Training Camp program, many of whom have suffered from TBI and/or PTSD. Remarkably, several hundred of the graduates have gone on to earn various certifications, compete in regattas, and some have even returned as instructors.

Sailing director Ben Poucher introduced sails, rigging, and the new vocabulary of sailing, such as “Duck” during an inadvertent downwind jibe. He conducted two chalkboard trainings daily with two on-the-water sessions that were just as entertaining as they were instructive, and by week’s end all were functioning as a team. You can learn more and/or support Warrior Sailing at  WarriorSailing.org . Congratulations to Warrior Sailors!

Summer Youth Program

The Seafarers Foundation’s primary focus is on underserved children. Each summer since 2003 children between the ages of 8 and 11, principally from Anne Arundel and Prince George’s Counties, were identified to participate in the Seafarers Summer Youth Program. Initially, the Seafarers Yacht Club provided these services, however, in 2008 the Seafarers Foundation assumed programmatic and fiscal responsibilities.  The program provides instructions and practical experiences in water safety, swimming, fishing, boating, the science of marine navigation, information on career opportunities, entrepreneurship, and other life skills, including financial slamming and management, dental and body hygiene, common courtesy, and respect for fellow human beings. The Summer Youth Program is held in the historic clubhouse of the Seafarers Yacht Club in Annapolis, Maryland. The 2024 Summer Youth Program will span two-weeks from Monday-Friday, 10-21 July, and will take applications from boys and girls aged 8-12 (or youth who are alumni of the program, or recommended by a member of the Seafarers Yacht Club). The program has a structured curriculum and lessons plans, designed to ensure the program meets its goals. The application to register for the program, will be available here once the recruitment starts.

Thousands of Dollars Raised

In support of the foundation goals, we have raised thousands of dollars in previous years, and are constantly looking for partners and new sponsors.

Years Serving communities

We have served the Annapolis and other Maryland and DC communities for over 21 years, with a focus on underserved children, senior citizens, and others with special needs.

Hundreds of People

Our programs have had an impact on hundreds of children, senior citizens, and other adults. We look forward to continuing to serve our growing communities with new and innovative programs.

annapolis yacht club sailing camp

“Participating in the Summer Youth Program of the Seafarers Foundation was one of the highlights of my sailing career. Being able to teach African American, Asian and Latino children about marine safety, navigation, and watching them learn to swim and/or improve their skills was amazing.”

Dr. Derrick L. Cogburn

Our Programs

We have four types of programs, all designed to benefit the communities we serve. These programs are only possible through the generous support of our community, and through our fundraising activities, grant funding, and the tireless support of our Board Members.

As described above, the Summer Youth Program is the flagship project of the Seafarers Foundation. Since 2008 the Foudation has led this important initiative, building on the previous work in this area of the Seafarers Yacht Club, Inc. The Summer Youth Program is designed to save the lives of our children through water safety.

Community Lectures

The Seafarers Foundation regularly solicits experts in finance, healthcare and other topics to provide free community lectures at the Seafarers Yacht Club clubhouse. Previous topics have included: personal finance, social security benefits, medicare benefits, reverse mortgages, and long-term care insurance.

Thanksgiving for Seniors

Each year, the Seafarers Foundation provides a complete Thanksgiving Dinner for Senior Citizens who may be away from their families, indigent, or persons with disabilities. The meal, held at the clubhouse of the Seafarers Yacht Club, has had great success, thanks to the heartfelt support of our community.

Sea Scout Ship 1959

In 2018 the Seafarers Foundation agreed to charter a Sea Scout Ship for Annapolis. Seafarers Commitment - Sea Scout Ship 1959 began programmatic operations in 2019 and was selected as the 2021 National Flagship. It welcome boys and girls aged 10 - 13 for its Maritime Explorer Club, and aged 14-21 for the Sea Scout Ship.

Yacht Clubs

annapolis yacht club sailing camp

Annapolis Yacht Club

Founded as an informal canoe club in 1883, the Annapolis Yacht Club has built a tradition of excellence.  Our mission is to encourage and support a wide range of boating activities, and to provide and maintain a suitable clubhouse and associated facilities for the recreational and social use of its members.

Stories from Annapolis Yacht Club

AYC beginnings were in 1883 as an informal canoe club. A building was constructed two years later on a pile of oyster shells at the foot of Duke of Gloucester Street, which, in 1886, became the Clubhouse for the formally-organized Severn Boat Club. This oyster pile was rented from St. Mary’s Church and was next to a rickety wooden bridge across Spa Creek. In 1897 a new clubhouse was built and was enlarged in 1912.

In 1904, the first records of meetings indicate a membership of 30. In 1910, the first wharfs were built, and the first club manager was hired in 1911 at a salary of $15 a month. Members began to acquire small sail boats and organize club regattas. These were uncomplicated affairs held on Memorial Day and Labor Day. Shell and canoe races started up Spa Creek at Old Woman Cove and ended at the Eastport Bridge. There were also swimming races and diving competitions. The club owned several single and double shells, two four-oared shells, and was given an eight-oared shell in 1911 by the US Naval Academy.

World War I and the depression slowed boating activities until the mid-30s. A hurricane damaged the clubhouse; the wharf was reduced to pilings in 1933 and it was difficult to keep the club’s quota of 100 resident members. By 1936, there seemed to be little interest by members in the club and changes were needed. With renewal in mind, in 1937 the Annapolis Yacht Club was incorporated and the first formal regatta (Annual) was held that year. The Fall Series first year was in 1940 with five boats competing. World War II interrupted organized racing, but in 1946 the Spring Series was started with three classes – 30 Square Meters, Stars and Chesapeake 20s. By 1948, Moths, Comets and Hamptons were also taking part. The Annapolis to Newport Race (Newport to Annapolis back then) started in 1947 and has been run every two years since. A dining room was added to the club in the late 1940s and in 1948, the first Smoking Lamp newsletter appeared as a single page mimeographed sheet. The junior fleet started in 1948, and the first junior trophy was presented in 1953. The first junior boat, Dolphins, were replaced by Penguins, which were next followed by 420s which the junior fleet still races. By 1959, membership had risen to 1000 and a new club building was badly needed. This was opened in 1963, with the first deck left unfinished due to lack of funds. Frostbite and Wednesday Night Racing soon demanded more club social space, and the Skipjack Lounge was finished in 1969.

The land across the Eastport Bridge where the junior fleet building is now (Holden Property) was purchased in 1969. The junior fleet was established there and a new building for them was completed in 1995. In 1989, women were welcomed as members, and the White Rocks Marina property (now the Harborside Sailing Center) was added in 1990. The club’s first official one-design fleet, the J/22, was started in 1991 with a crane added to Harborside for launching of the boats. The clubhouse again underwent a major renovation in 1995.

Today, AYC is at full membership with very active social, racing, and cruising programs.  Large international events such as the Star Class World Championship, Rolex International Women’s Keelboat Championship, and many North American championships are hosted every year at AYC. Harborside is filled with one design boats (J/22s, J/24s, Etchells, Stars, Melges 24) while the in-the-water boat slips are in high demand. AYC is known worldwide thanks to the members who are prominent in participating in, promoting, and organizing the sport of sailboat racing, as well as those who opt to leisurely cruise the waters of the Chesapeake and beyond.

Michael R. Krissoff
