ENCORE has completed Platinum Marine's Transformational refit program (2013) and presents extremely well.

ENCORE  completed  Platinum Marine’s  Transformational refit program (2013) and presents extraordinarily well. The Transformational refit program offers the revitalization and customization of high quality vessels that are structurally sound and have many years of safe and reliable service ahead. Crescent Custom Yachts originally built ENCORE to Bureau Veritas (BV) class standards, using a proven Westport hull design. Building on this foundation, Platinum Marine  made the following major improvements:

  • New tri-deck styling and structure with elevated pilothouse, skylounge and sun deck resulting in more interior space and more functional exterior deck space.
  • Improved hull and superstructure styling makes the profile and deck design current, functional, and attractive.
  • New pilothouse with reverse sheer windows and Portuguese bridge design, featuring state of the art navigational and communication electronics as well as new wing station capability. Visibility and control are excellent under all conditions.
  • Brand new custom built, designer-styled interior with new woodwork, new soft goods, new galley and galley equipment, state of the art entertainment electronics, LED lighting throughout, electronic shades, and new Durante furnishings.
  • Complete Alexseal paint job.
  • Replacement or upgrading of ALL onboard systems and equipment, including new Hamann waste treatment and make-up air conditioning systems.
  • Addition of bulbous bow and raised bulwarks for improved seakeeping as well as enlarged swim platform for better water access.

In making the above major improvements, every single system and piece of equipment on the yacht was thoroughly assessed and either replaced or updated to put ENCORE in turnkey condition. The following walk-through elaborates on the details of the refit.

Starting with the expansive swim platform it can be seen that this yacht has been prepared for all levels of water sports and careful consideration to boarding from a tender has been taken into account. All decks are finished using  Marine Deck’s  cork as a substitute for teak in order to drastically cut down on maintenance, costs, and manpower. A large watertight Freeman hatch provides access to the spacious storage in the lazarette underneath the swim platform.

Dual port and starboard stairways provide access to the aft deck which features undercover, custom molded dinette seating, customer inlaid wood dining table, fully retractable entertainment system and highly polished stainless railings and deck fittings. Overhead LED lighting and speakers makes this a very pleasant area to enjoy a meal or simply relax.

Staying on the exterior, a starboard staircase provides ready access to the boat deck above where the 15’ Novurania (90hp Yamaha 4 stroke) and Honda AquaTrax PWC are stored. Launching is easily handled with the fully renovated Nautical Structures hydraulic davit. For larger entertaining functions, the tender chocks are quickly removed from the stainless inserts leaving a clean, flush deck.

Continuing up the starboard side stairwell to the sundeck, you will find a built in 8 person Hydrojet Spa-tub offering fantastic 360° views while remaining protected from the sun via the large custom hardtop. A comfortable padded rattan sectional provides a sociable setting for meals, drinks, or just relaxing in the shade. Also on the top deck you find a large barbeque, refrigerator and sink hosted in a useable cabinet/counter that allows for meal and/or drink preparation. For sun worshipers, additional rattan pods provide various configurations for relaxing or socializing in the sun on the aft portion of this uppermost deck.

Moving inside after returning to the aft deck, the full beam salon gives the immediate impression of a brand new boat. With a creative combination of dark oak paneling and light wool carpets "warmed" with a 50” Synergy digital fireplace, Platinum has created a cozy environment that pleases all senses. Once the large entertainment system is summoned via remote, the salon has access to many forms of entertainment or web browsing. There is also a small workstation area to port for occasional access to emails or the web when necessary. The forward section of the salon incorporates a large 8-person table for formal dining and features the commissioned custom artwork of Christine Breakell-Lee. Custom furniture by Durante using only the finest textiles, down, and memory foam are featured throughout the yacht.

Moving forward along the starboard companionway toward the galley is a day head and access by stair to the bridge and sky lounge. At this point, the interior transitions into a classic New England styled country kitchen with a central island and copious casual seating. There is also a cozy booth option for enjoying casual dining. Galley millwork is finished in classic white that contrasts well with the warmth of the dark hardwood flooring. Cesar stone countertops, a full entertainments system and world-class appliances make this room one of the best in any yacht, featuring brands such as Viking, Subzero, and Miele.

Forward of the galley (below deck) is the large VIP stateroom. This extra roomy cabin boasts a unique ensuite bath with shower, a walk in closet, and full entertainment system all of which combine to provide a very nice room for special guests.

By returning to the salon, we can proceed towards the master and 2 additional guest staterooms through the port companionway. In this hallway is a door leading to a large staff technical space that is very well finished and hosts all of the low voltage systems like the audio visual, wi-fi, satellite controls, FT NavVision, monitoring and many more pertinent components of the ships systems. This is an excellent staging area for any number of projects and provides easy access to all the aforementioned systems.

Further forward along the port companionway, you find a stairwell to the lower foyer which a beautiful entry area that separates the master from the guest staterooms and provides access to the guest laundry. A large separate room on the starboard side holds the Miele guest washer and dryer, additional storage, and a functional work vanity for the cleaning duties.

Forward of the foyer, the master stateroom is in the quietest, calmest part of the yacht: low and centered amidships. Inside you find a king sized bed, his and her closets, copious drawer storage, and a comfortable settee. The his-and-hers bathroom arrangement is beautifully appointed with marble counters and accents as well as modern fixtures. Again a full entertainment system compliments the amenities.

The aft side of the lower foyer allows access to the two remaining guest cabins. The starboard cabin has a queen size memory foam mattress while the port features two large memory foam singles berths that can be joined as a large queen sized berth.  Both rooms enjoy spacious ensuite bathrooms incorporating stone counters/floors/walls. Entertainment systems, storage and heated bathroom floors round out the features.

The last guest area of the boat to explore is up two decks where we find the newly constructed skylounge and pilothouse.  This space is an excellent example of how to maximize the aesthetic and functionality for both guests and crew. With a state of the art pilothouse, the Captain has incredible visibility through reverse sheer windows and a near-360 degrees line of site. Through 3 flat panel screens, the crew can access a wide array of ship’s information related to every system on the boat while simultaneously monitoring CCTV, the navigation software, and radars. The bridge’s clean look and easy access to information belies the complicated host of systems and information being controlled and accessed by the captain. Within a few steps outside of each wing door, the captain can set up the mobile wing station for easy dockage from a vantage point of perfect visibility for the length of the yacht. Stidd chairs and a custom settee provide seating for crew and guests to relax and/or observe the action.

Separating the skylounge from the bridge is full wet bar for guest service. The skylounge’s large windows allow for fantastic sightseeing, and again this area is equipped with the latest lighting and A/V equipment to meet guests’ needs and expectations. A large 64” LCD screen is perfect for watching a movie while sitting in the comfortable array of Durante furniture. Another 50” Synergy digital fireplace is incorporated under the TV.

The entire boat features automated remote controlled roller shades, state of the art entertainment, and a make-up air system that provides fresh air throughout. Again, there is not a system, feature, or piece of equipment that has not been renewed or replaced by the current owner on ENCORE. She is readily available for inspection by appointment for qualified buyers.

Virtual Tour available.

DECK AND HULL

Using a proven Westport hull designed by Jack Sarin that was originally constructed to BV standards, this particular hull benefits from a more robust stringer and frame arrangement, making the hull stronger and less prone to flexing in rough sea conditions.  Paul Frederickson, one of Sarin’s naval architects at the time of development, was used as the naval architect for this transformational refit in order to retain and build upon all of the original BV specifications both in the hull and elsewhere throughout the specification.  This continuity lends confidence and validity to the new updated design concept. The hull construction is cored fiberglass with gelcoat that is painted high gloss white (currently using an Alexseal paint system).

Lynch Yacht Sinking Off Sicily Proves as Baffling as It Is Tragic

As bodies were recovered, the authorities and experts wondered how a $40 million, stable and secure vessel could have sunk so quickly.

  • Share full article

A diver in an orange jumpsuit suit and crews in gray shirts and red trousers hoist remains in a blue body bag onto a boat, as others in reflector uniforms stand nearby.

By Emma Bubola and Michael J. de la Merced

Emma Bubola reported from Porticello, Italy, and Michael J. de la Merced from London.

Two months after being cleared in a bruising legal battle over fraud charges, the British tech mogul Mike Lynch celebrated his freedom with a cruise. He invited his family, friends and part of his legal team on board his luxury sailing yacht, a majestic 180-foot vessel named Bayesian after the mathematical theorem around which he had built his empire.

On Sunday night, after a tour of the Gulf of Naples, including Capri, and volcanic islands in the Eolian archipelago, the boat anchored half a mile off the Sicilian coast in Porticello, Italy. It chose a stretch of water favored by the Phoenicians thousands of years ago for its protection from the mistral wind and, in more recent times, by the yachts of tech billionaires. The boat was lit “like a Christmas tree,” local residents said, standing out against the full moon.

But about 4 a.m., calamity unfolded. A violent and fast storm hit the area with some of the strongest winds locals said they had ever felt. Fabio Cefalù, a fisherman, said he saw a flare pierce the darkness shortly after 4.

Minutes later, the yacht was underwater. Only dozens of cushions from the boat’s deck and a gigantic radar from its mast floated on the surface of the sea, fishermen said.

In all, 22 people were on board, 15 of whom were rescued. Six bodies — five passengers and the ship’s cook — had been recovered by Thursday afternoon, including that of Mr. Lynch, an Italian government official said, adding that the search was continuing for his daughter.

It was a tragic and mystifying turn of events for Mr. Lynch, 59, who had spent years seeking to clear his name and was finally inaugurating a new chapter in his life. Experts wondered how a $40 million yacht, so robust and stable could have been sunk by a storm near a port within minutes.

“It drives me insane,” said Giovanni Costantino, the chief executive of the Italian Sea Group, which in 2022 bought the company, Perini, that made the Bayesian. “Following all the proper procedures, that boat is unsinkable.”

The aura of misfortune only deepened when it emerged that Stephen Chamberlain, 52, a former vice president of finance for Mr. Lynch’s former company and a co-defendant in the fraud case, was killed two days earlier, when he was hit by a car while jogging near his house in England.

Since June, the two men had been in a jubilant mood. A jury in San Francisco had acquitted both on fraud charges that could have sent them to prison for two decades. There were hugs and tears, and they and their legal teams went for a celebratory dinner party at a restaurant in the city, said Gary S. Lincenberg, a lawyer for Mr. Chamberlain.

The sea excursion was meant as a thank-you by Mr. Lynch to those who had helped him in his legal travails. Among the guests was Christopher J. Morvillo, 59, a scion of a prominent New York family of lawyers who had represented Mr. Lynch for 12 years. He and his wife, Neda, 57, were among the missing.

So, too, was Jonathan Bloomer, 70, a veteran British insurance executive who chaired Morgan Stanley International and the insurer Hiscox.

The body of the ship’s cook, Recaldo Thomas, was recovered. All the other crew members survived. Among them was Leo Eppel, 19, of South Africa, who was on his first yacht voyage working as a deck steward, said a friend, who asked not to be identified.

Since the sinking, the recovery effort and investigation have turned the tiny port town of Porticello, a quiet enclave where older men sit bare-chested on balconies, into what feels like the set of a movie.

Helicopters have flown overhead. Ambulances have sped by with the sirens blaring. The Coast Guard has patrolled the waters off shore, within sight of a cordoned-off dock that had been turned into an emergency headquarters.

On Wednesday afternoon, a church bell tolled after the first body bag was loaded into an ambulance, a crowd watching in silence.

The survivors were sheltering in a sprawling resort near Porticello, with a view of the shipwreck spot, and had so far declined to comment.

Attilio Di Diodato, director of the Italian Air Force’s Center for Aerospace Meteorology and Climatology, said that the yacht had most likely been hit by a fierce “down burst” — when air generated within a thunderstorm descends rapidly — or by a waterspout , similar to a tornado over water.

He added that his agency had put out rough-sea warnings the previous evening, alerting sailors about storms and strong winds. Locals said the winds “felt like an earthquake.”

Mr. Costantino, the boat executive, said the yacht had been specifically designed for having a tall mast — the second-tallest aluminum mast in the world. He said the Bayesian was an extremely safe and secure boat that could list even to 75 degrees without capsizing.

But he said that if some of the hatches on the side and in the stern, or some of the deck doors, had been open, the boat could have taken on water and sunk. Standard procedure in such storms, he said, is to switch on the engine, lift the anchor and turn the boat into the wind, lowering the keel for extra stability, closing doors and gathering the guests in the main hall inside the deck.

12 guests occupied the yacht’s six cabins. There were also 10 crew members.

Open hatches, doors and cabin windows could have let in water during a storm, according to the manufacturer.

The New York Times attempted to reach the captain, James Cutfield, who had survived, for comment through social media, his brother and the management company of the yacht (which did not hire the crew), but did not make contact.

So far none of the surviving crew members have made a public statement about what happened that night.

Fabio Genco, the director of Palermo’s emergency services, who treated some of the survivors, said that the victims had recounted feeling as if the boat was being lifted, then suddenly dropped, with objects from the cabins falling on them.

The Italian Coast Guard said it had deployed a remotely operated vehicle that can prowl underwater for up to seven hours at a depth of more than 980 feet and record videos and images that they hoped would help them reconstruct the dynamics of the sinking. Such devices were used during the search and rescue operations of the Titan vessel that is believed to have imploded last summer near the wreckage of the Titanic.

After rescuers broke inside the yacht, they struggled to navigate the ropes and many pieces of furniture cluttering the vessel, said Luca Cari, a spokesman for Italy’s national firefighter corps.

Finally, as of Thursday morning, they had managed to retrieve all but one of the missing bodies, and hopes of finding the missing person alive were thin. “Can a human being be underwater for two days?” Mr. Cari asked.

What was certain was that Mr. Lynch’s death was yet another cruel twist of fate for a man who had spent years seeking to clear his name.

He earned a fortune in technology and was nicknamed Britain’s Bill Gates. But for more than a decade, he had been treated as anything but a respected tech leader.

He was accused by Hewlett-Packard, the American technological pioneer that had bought his software company, Autonomy, for $11 billion, of misleading it about his company’s worth. (Hewlett-Packard wrote down the value of the transaction by about $8.8 billion, and critics called it one of the worst deals of all time .) He had been increasingly shunned by the British establishment that he sought to break into after growing up working-class outside London.

He was extradited to San Francisco to face criminal charges, and confined to house arrest and 24-hour surveillance on his dime. In a townhouse in the Pacific Heights neighborhood — with security people he jokingly told associates were his “roommates” — he spent his mornings talking with researchers whom he funded personally on new applications for artificial intelligence. Afterward, he devoted hours to discussing legal strategy with his team.

Despite his persistent claims of innocence, even those close to Mr. Lynch had believed his odds of victory were slim. Autonomy’s chief financial officer, Sushovan Hussain, was convicted in 2018 of similar fraud charges and spent five years in prison.

During Mr. Lynch’s house arrest, his brother and mother died. His wife, Angela Bacares, frequently flew over from England, and she became a constant presence in the San Francisco courtroom during the trial.

After he was finally acquitted, Mr. Lynch had his eye on the future. “I am looking forward to returning to the U.K. and getting back to what I love most: my family and innovating in my field,” he said.

Five bodies found inside superyacht that sank off Sicily

PORTICELLO, Sicily — Divers recovered four bodies Wednesday from inside a superyacht that sank in a sudden storm off Sicily , Salvatore Cocina, director of the island's Civil Protection Agency, confirmed to NBC News.

Cocina later confirmed to Sky News that a fifth body had been found and was being brought to shore. One passenger remains missing.

The identities of the bodies were not immediately released. Their recovery follows a dayslong search in the deep waters off Italy where British tech tycoon Mike Lynch  and several others were believed to be trapped in the hull. Fifteen of the 22 people aboard survived.

The rest had been missing since early Monday, when the Bayesian was caught in the storm anchored off the coast of Porticello, a village near the Sicilian capital city, Palermo.

The body of the ship’s cook, identified as Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian Antiguan national, was recovered Monday.

On Wednesday, NBC News witnessed what appeared to be at least three body bags being lifted from fire department boats after they pulled into port at Porticello. It was unclear whose bodies they were. Some were later transferred to ambulances and driven away from the dock.

Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter, Hannah; Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, Judy; and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife, Neda, are also missing.

Bayesian yacht accident in Sicily

The Bayesian is owned by a firm linked to Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, who was among the survivors rescued by a nearby vessel after they got into a lifeboat.

Built by the Italian shipbuilder Perini Navi in 2008, the U.K.-registered yacht could carry 12 guests and a crew of up to 10, according to online specialist boating sites. Its nearly 250-foot mast is the tallest aluminum sailing mast in the world, according to CharterWorld Luxury Yacht Charters.

Regularly described in U.K. media as “Britain’s Bill Gates,” Lynch was  acquitted of fraud by a San Francisco jury this year, stemming from the sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion in 2011.

The Mediterranean sailing vacation was designed to be a celebration for Lynch, who brought Bloomer, who testified in his defense, and Morvillo, one of his U.S. lawyers, on the trip.

Lynch's co-defendant Stephen Chamberlain was not aboard the Bayesian, but in what appears to be a tragic coincidence, a  car struck and killed  him Saturday as he was jogging in a village about 68 miles north of London, local police said.

The Bayesian yacht, a symbol of nautical elegance and engineering brilliance, has long been celebrated in the world of superyachts. Built by the renowned Italian shipbuilder Perini Navi, this 56-meter vessel was first launched in 2008 under the name Salute. The name itself, translating to “health” in Italian, seemed to promise a voyage of luxury and well-being. However, what truly set this yacht apart was not just its name, but its sheer opulence, advanced design, and the remarkable story it carried.

The Birth of Bayesian: An Engineering Marvel

Originally costing an estimated £14 million, the Bayesian yacht was a testament to the pinnacle of yacht design and craftsmanship. Perini Navi, one of the world’s leading yacht makers, crafted this vessel with a focus on both performance and luxury. Under the expert design of yacht architect Ron Holland, the Bayesian boasted the world’s tallest aluminum mast, standing over 72 meters above the deck. This engineering feat allowed the yacht to carry nearly 3,000 square meters of sail, making it a sight to behold on the open seas.

The yacht’s towering mast was not just for show; it was a technical challenge that required innovative solutions to ensure stability and safety. A former captain of the Bayesian highlighted the achievement of taming this massive structure, ensuring that it behaved dynamically during both sailing and motoring. This balance between design and function made the Bayesian a unique vessel in the world of superyachts.

A Floating Palace: The Luxurious Interiors

The interiors of the Bayesian yacht were designed by the acclaimed Rémi Tessier, a name synonymous with luxury and sophistication. Tessier, who has also designed suites for Claridge’s hotel in London and yachts for Swiss billionaire Ernesto Bertarelli, infused the Bayesian with a sense of pure and natural elegance. Drawing inspiration from Japanese design principles, Tessier utilized whitened sycamore and teak surfaces in the communal areas, creating a serene and calming environment for guests.

In the private cabins, materials such as stainless steel, ebony, and leather were carefully chosen to create a luxurious yet familiar atmosphere. The yacht could comfortably accommodate up to twelve guests in six beautifully appointed cabins, each attended by a staff of ten, dedicated to catering to every whim of the guests. The design emphasized outdoor living, with ample spaces for al fresco entertaining and relaxing on deck.

The Ultimate Playground: Onboard Amenities and Water Toys

For those fortunate enough to embark on a journey aboard the Bayesian, the yacht offered a plethora of amenities designed for both relaxation and adventure. The lower deck was divided into three distinct sections: crew accommodation towards the bow, guest staterooms in the middle, and the owner’s cabin at the aft. This layout ensured that guests enjoyed privacy and comfort throughout their stay.

The real fun, however, was found at the aft of the yacht, where a garage housed a collection of water toys and crafts. From jet skis and wakeboards to sea kayaks and banana boats, the Bayesian was equipped to offer endless entertainment on the water. A tender was also available to transport guests to secluded bays and ports, allowing them to explore the surrounding areas in style.

A Tragic End: The Sinking of the Bayesian

Despite its luxurious beginnings, the story of the Bayesian yacht took a tragic turn. In 2020, the yacht was refitted and no longer listed for private hire. By this time, it had been renamed Bayesian, a name that would become synonymous with one of the most harrowing maritime incidents in recent history.

In August 2024, during a celebratory voyage off the coast of Sicily, the Bayesian was caught in a sudden and severe storm. High winds, reportedly reaching up to 200km/h, battered the yacht, causing the massive aluminum mast to topple over the side. The force of the wind and the weight of the mast pushed the yacht beyond its down-flooding angle, causing seawater to flood the deck. Within minutes, the Bayesian capsized and sank.

A nearby vessel, the Sir Robert BP, witnessed the tragedy unfold. The crew of the Sir Robert BP reported seeing the Bayesian go flat on the water before disappearing beneath the waves. Despite their efforts to help, only 15 people were rescued from the sinking yacht, including a one-year-old baby who was heroically saved by her mother, Charlotte Golunski.

The Aftermath: A Somber Legacy

The sinking of the Bayesian yacht left a profound impact on the yachting community and beyond. Among those feared dead were tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his daughter Hannah, who were aboard the yacht celebrating Lynch’s recent legal victory in the United States. The tragedy underscored the unpredictable and often dangerous nature of the sea, even for vessels as advanced and well-crafted as the Bayesian.

The wreckage of the Bayesian was eventually discovered by divers, but the loss of life and the yacht itself marked a somber end to what was once a symbol of luxury and achievement. The images of the yacht, once proudly displayed in the homes of its owner, now serve as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the unpredictability of nature.

Conclusion: The Enduring Legacy of the Bayesian Yacht

The Bayesian yacht, with its towering mast and luxurious interiors, will always be remembered as a masterpiece of nautical engineering and design. It stood as a symbol of opulence, craftsmanship, and the heights that human ingenuity can reach. Yet, its tragic end also serves as a reminder of the forces of nature and the risks inherent in venturing into the open sea.

For those who had the privilege of experiencing the Bayesian, it was more than just a yacht; it was a floating palace, a testament to the art of yacht-making, and a vessel that carried with it the dreams and aspirations of its owners and guests. Though the Bayesian now rests at the bottom of the Mediterranean, its legacy will continue to inspire and remind us of the delicate balance between luxury and nature.

5th body recovered from Mike Lynch's family yacht off Sicily as questions mount over luxury vessel's sinking

By Anna Matranga

Updated on: August 22, 2024 / 10:48 AM EDT / CBS News

Rome — Divers recovered the body of a fifth victim of the Bayesian superyacht wreck Thursday morning, Sicily Civil Protection Chief Salvo Cocina confirmed to CBS News, and the Reuters news agency cited Italian Interior Ministry official Massimo Mariani as saying it was the body of Mike Lynch, the British tech magnate whose wife owned the vessel.

Italian Coast Guard spokesperson Vincenzo Zagarola told CBS News that teams were still working to recover the body of the sixth and final person left missing when the boat went down. The six bodies had remained stuck inside the 184-foot luxury yacht for days after it sank early Monday morning off the coast of Palermo, Sicily in a severe thunderstorm.

Four bodies were retrieved Wednesday from the Bayesian, which was resting on the seafloor at a 90 degree angle at a depth of over 160 feet. The vessel's position and items that moved around inside the ill-fated yacht made recovery efforts slow and hazardous.

Italian authorities have not officially identified the remains recovered from the Bayesian, which belonged to Lynch's wife Angela Bacares. She was among the 15 people who managed to escape from the boat as it sank quickly on Monday morning, but Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah were among those left missing.

ITALY-MARITIME-ACCIDENT-BRITAIN

Another victim, the Bayesian superyacht's chef, was found dead soon after the boat capsized.

Along with Lynch and his daughter, the technology mogul's American lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife Neda, and British banker Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, were believed to have been trapped in the yacht when it sank.

Questions as to how the state-of-the-art boat could have gone down so quickly have mounted steadily since the accident.

Italian media were reporting Thursday that, after questioning survivors and witnesses, Italian prosecutors had opened an official investigation into a possible "culpable shipwreck." No individuals had been named as potential suspects.

On Thursday, Giovanni Costantino, head of the Italian Sea Group, which owns the company Perini Navi, which built the Bayesian in 2008, blamed human error.

"A Perini ship resisted Hurricane Katrina, a Category 5 [hurricane]. Does it seem to you that it can't resist a tornado from here?" he remarked to the newspaper Corriere della Sera. "It is good practice when the ship is at anchor to have a guard on the bridge, and if there was one he could not have failed to see the storm coming. Instead, it took on water with the guests still in the cabin. ... They ended up in a trap, those poor people ended up like mice."

bayesian-yacht.jpg

One possible factor could have been that the ship's keel — a fin-like structure that sticks out from the bottom of the boat, designed to provide stability and counterweight to the huge mast — was not fully deployed. The yacht had a retractable keel that could be raised for entry into shallow harbors. But a raised keel at sea would have made the ship much more vulnerable to instability in the strong winds that struck early Monday morning.

When asked whether divers had seen the ship's keel in a raised position, a spokesman for the Italian Coast Guard told CBS News that only the prosecutor investigating the incident could confirm such information but that the Coast Guard "was not denying" it.

The ship's captain, 51-year-old New Zealand national James Cutfileld, was questioned for two hours by prosecutors on Thursday, according to Italian media.

Paris Olympics 'beyond my wildest dreams' for Auburn sprinter

After leading Auburn to a runner-up finish at the 2024 NCAA Outdoor Championships, four Tiger sprinters competed in the Paris Olympics, including Maka Charamba, the flag bearer for Zimbabwe

Makanakaishe Charamba

AUBURN, Ala. – Bearing the flag of his native Zimbabwe during opening ceremonies of the Paris Olympics, Auburn sprinter Makanakaishe Charamba floated by boat down the River Seines to the Gardens of the Trocadero in France.

“Lifting up my flag and waving it around on camera,” Charamba said. “Probably one of the best experiences of the Games.”

Charamba attended a meeting before the ceremonies that included USA flagbearers Lebron James and Coco Gauff, then saw James’ and his All-Star teammates on the USA men’s basketball team during their visit to the Olympic Village.

“I’m with these guys now,” he said. “The dream is coming true now. Walking around the Village and seeing people like Lebron James. It definitely made me feel like I belonged there, and I believe in the future, I’ll probably be up there.”

Charamba proved he belonged in Paris by advancing to the final of the men’s 200m dash.

“Execute my own race and leave everything else to God,” said Charabma, a student in Auburn University’s Harbert College of Business. “Never really thought I was going to make the final. The goal going there was just to have fun. Whatever happens happens.”

After finishing second in the first round and third in his semifinal, Charamba finished eighth in the final.

“A great experience,” he said. “My journey surpassed my expectations. Walking into the stadium and seeing my name on the boards was a crazy experience. This is the whole world watching.

“The audience is bigger than the NCAA audience. The nerves and tensions are high because you are facing the world’s best.”

Three of Charamba’s sprint teammates from Auburn’s 2024 NCAA runner-up team joined him in Paris: Kanyinsola Ajayi and Favour Ashe from Nigeria, and Azeem Fahmi from Malaysia.

“A great pleasure and achievement for me, representing my country on the big stage,” Ajayi said. “A privilege to represent my school, too.”

After coming within a few hundredths of a second of winning the NCAA title, the Auburn sprinters are already planning an encore.

“I feel like 2025 will be a great season for us,” Ajayi said. “We’re going to try to keep the synergy and win the national title. Iron sharpens iron. If you want to get fast, you have to train with people who are faster than you so they can push you to that limit. It’s really helped me a lot.”

“We have raised the Auburn standard,” Charamba said. “We’ll use that momentum from this year to carry us. We want to make this a championship team. We’re still in the process of building but after next year, I believe it’s going to be one of those teams where people are going to say, ‘Auburn is here.’”

Reaching the Olympic final fuels Charamba for continued success.

“A huge confidence booster,” he said. “In the future, I don’t think I’ll be scared of anything because I ran in the Olympic Games and made the final, and now I’m regarded as the eighth fastest man in the world. Going forward, I don’t think I’m going to be nervous about anything because I’ve faced the best of the best.”

Charamba’s Olympic year got off to a slow start, when he failed to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships. Heading into the outdoor season, Auburn sprints coach Ken Harnden sought to reassure Maka, as Charamba’s teammates call him, that better times were ahead.

“’Trust me and miracles are going to happen,’” Charamba recalls Harnden telling him. “I trusted him, trusted the process and was patient with everything. Things worked out. It was a blessing.”

Once their Auburn careers conclude, the sprinters hope to return to the Olympics in 2028 in Los Angeles.

“That has been my dream since childhood to compete with the fastest guys in the world,” Ajayi said. “It motivates me to keep working. Don’t relent. You need to keep working so you can get to that stage.”

But first, they hope to make another title run next season on the Plains.

“The work we put in and the belief and trust we have in each other,” Ajayi said. “You can achieve this if you are focused. Everything came together for us.”

“We were trying to show the world that Auburn was coming,” Charamba said. “It’s showing the world that we’re coming up and we’re about to be a force to be reckoned with.”

In the three years since he left Zimbabwe, Maka Charamba has won NCAA D-II championships in the 100m and 200m, a D-I championship at Auburn in the 4x100m relay and a team NCAA runner-up finish. Then came Paris, making the Olympic final and bearing the flag for his homeland.

“Beyond my wildest dreams,” Charamba said. “Coming to Auburn and winning a national championship in my first year in the 4x100, this journey has been beyond my expectations.”

History of Krasnoyarsk Krai

The first state in the territory of southern Siberia appeared in the 4th-3rd centuries BC. Ancient Chinese chronicles called it Dinlin. Around 201 BC, Dinlin state was defeated by the Hunnu (the ancestors of the Huns) - an ancient Turkic nomadic people who inhabited the steppes to the north of China from 220 BC until the 2nd century AD. To protect the country against their raids Qin Shi Huang built the Great Wall of China.

After the defeat of Dinlin, the Turkic tribe of the Kyrgyz settled in Khakass-Minusinsk depression. In 840, Kyrgyz state destroyed Uighur Khanate and extended its power in Tuva and Mongolia. At the beginning of the 13th century, the Kyrgyz were conquered by the Mongols.

Since that time, the Kyrgyz ceased to play an independent role in the Asian international politics. But in the Minusinsk Hollow, the surrounding area of Krasnoyarsk and other northern territories, the Kyrgyz were the most powerful force and resisted the Russian Cossacks who were engaged in the conquest of Siberia. In the end they could not prevent the incorporation of these territories into Russia.

More historical facts…

Until 1629, the territory of present Krasnoyarsk krai was part of a vast region with its center in the town of Tobolsk. In the 1760s-1780s, Siberia began to be used as the main place of exile. In 1822, Yenisei gubernia (province) was established after the separation of Siberia into Western and Eastern. In 1863, 44,994 exiles lived in the Yenisei province representing 1/7 of the total population of the province. According to the 1897 census, 570,200 people lived in the province.

On December 7, 1934, Krasnoyarsk Krai was formed. The borders of the region were almost the same as of Yenisei gubernia of the Russian Empire. In 1991, Khakassia Autonomous Oblast being originally part of the region became a separate subject of Russia - the Republic of Khakassia.

On January 1, 2007, Krasnoyarsk Krai, Taimyr (Dolgano-Nenetsky) Autonomous Okrug and Evenky Autonomous Okrug were united in a single region called Krasnoyarsk Krai, the autonomous okrugs became Taimyr (Dolgano-Nenetsky) and Evenky districts.
