Sunk Superyacht Likely to Cost Insurers at Least $150 Million, Experts Say

LONDON (Reuters) - Insurers of the Bayesian superyacht that sank this month, killing tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch and six others, could be on the hook for at least $150 million, according to the first estimates by industry experts.

The British-flagged 56-metre-long (184-foot-long) yacht, which the experts estimated cost around $40 million, capsized and went down on Aug. 19 within minutes of being hit by a pre-dawn storm while anchored off northern Sicily.

The superyacht's hull was insured against physical damage by yacht insurance provider OMAC and a consortium of insurers including Travelers Companies Inc, Navium Marine and Convex, Reuters reported last week.

Its protection and indemnity (P&I) insurance, which typically covers third-party liability claims including for environmental damage, injury and death, was provided by British Marine.

The hull was likely insured for around $40 million, while the P&I cover would be larger, insurance sources said.

"Our understanding is that the cost of the boat was between $40 and $50 million, so the limit of the hull & machinery policy was probably around those values," said Marcos Alvarez, managing director, global financial institution ratings at Morningstar DBRS.

The P&I policy would likely be "several multiples" of the hull policy, or $200-300 million, Alvarez added, noting it would also likely cover liability payments even if the captain or crew are found to be negligent.

Prosecutors in the town of Termini Imerese, near Palermo, are investigating the captain and two other crew members. An investigation does not imply guilt or mean formal charges will follow. Prosecutors have said the probe would take time and require salvaging the wreck.

Oscar Seikaly, CEO of broker NSI Insurance Group, that provides yacht insurance, estimated the hull value at $40-70 million, but said P&I cover might not total more than $100 million.

P&I insurance would also cover recovery of the Bayesian, said Francesco Dubbioso, country manager for Italy for insurer Alta Signa Europe, who estimated the superyacht's value at $30 million to $40 million.

Reuters is the first to report the potential insurance costs. OMAC, Travelers and Navium Marine did not immediately respond to Reuters' for comment. Convex declined to comment.

The Bayesian disaster, which has puzzled experts who said the boat would have been built to withstand a severe storm, adds to recent woes for yacht insurers, who have faced a raft of hurricane losses in the past few years.

Premium rates have risen by four to five times in the past couple of years in parts of the U.S. and the Caribbean, and yacht insurers have cut the amount of cover they provide because of the risks, Seikaly said.

As a result, insurers have increased rates and re-evaluated their guidelines and risk appetite, according to industry experts.

As well as hurricanes, insured losses have mostly stemmed from severe storms, floods, and other weather events in North America, the Caribbean, and Europe, according to a report by broker Marsh.

Seikaly said four clients had last week been ready to buy boats but changed their minds because of the high cost of insurance.

Climate change was also likely to add to yacht insurers' worries, Seikaly added, as it throws up more unexpected events.

"Whoever thought a storm in the Mediterranean in the month of August is going to sink a ship?"

A MILLIONAIRE supermarket heir is accused of crashing his dad's yacht into a small boat, killing a fisherman.

Dennis Viehof , 35, then allegedly sped away from the scene on the £3.3 million yacht he borrowed from his dad in holiday hotspot Majorca.

German national Viehof - the son of millionaire Klaus Viehof, 62 - allegedly lost control of the 20-metre-long La Luna yacht on August 23 in fishing town Cala Bona.

Witnesses saw the yacht going too quickly before it hit and overpowered the comparatively smaller fishing boat carrying three.

The keen anglers were out hunting for some squid and hoping to land some at around 10pm.

But the yacht allegedly failed to stop and help the fisherman and promising volleyball player Guillem Comamala, understood to be 20, died at the scene.

Viehof - heir to the Allkauf supermarket fortune - is currently being investigated for manslaughter after his allegedly reckless control of the luxury yacht.

The surviving fishermen say the impact of the hit was so severe it ripped the engine from the boat, leaving it completely incapacitated.

The black yacht was reportedly given a rushed and frantic cleaning the next morning.

Glasses were discarded into the harbour basin just before cops arrived to seal off the vessel.

But a cleaner on the sailing boat insisted she was unaware of the tragic accident and just followed Viehof's basic instructions.

Investigators have since revealed that the yacht had apparently been recklessly speeding across the water with its powerful 1550 hp engine.

They also revealed that its crew failed to slow down or offer any assistance even after seeing the effects of the collision.

They're also looking into whether anyone aboard the ship tried to flee the scene after and examining the crew's claim that they were unaware of the fatal crash.

Cops reportedly found a phone during their search of the yacht and hope it can reveal vital clues related to last Friday's incident.

Surveillance footage from the nearby yacht club is now under review to pinpoint the exact number of people aboard the vessel on August 23.

Viehof was quizzed by local cops on August 24, the day after the incident as part of the manslaughter investigation.

Infobae reports that he voluntarily pleaded guilty to negligent homicide and failure to provide assistance and was released after exercising his right not to testify.

The investigation continues.

Tributes flooded in for popular volleyball player Guillem and his club Club Voleibol Portol issued a moving statement.

They said: "A very sad day for our family. We, from the Portol Volleyball Club, want to extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and acquaintances of Guillem Comamala Fiol.

"As a club, we had the privilege of watching him grow up from a young age. He won us all over with his personality and his skills as a player.

"We shared spectacular moments with him, lifting trophies, winning medals, overcoming defeats, but above all, growing together and feeling proud to share unforgettable moments.

"We will always carry you with us, Guillem, always by our side, fighting like a superhero and smiling despite adversity. Thank you for everything, Guillem, you are and will always be eternal."

The Viehofs are one of Germany's wealthiest families. Dennis's dad Klaus is the son of Eugen Viehof, who sold his Allkauf retail group in 1998, according to the Majorca Daily Bulletin.

Captain Glenn Shephard from Below Deck Sailing Yacht hasn’t addressed the backlash surrounding Gary King’s sexual misconduct allegations. The reality yachting show debuted its first season in 2020, utilizing the classic format of the mainstay series that spotlights the lives of the crew working on luxurious sailing yachts. Gary and Daisy Kelliher joined the cast during BDSY season 2 and remained fixtures of the spin-off. As the First Officer, Gary was known as a womanizer in the series. No one has said much about gary’s potential return in season 5.

While the captain seemingly still supports Gary, he hasn’t released any official comments about his future on the show. He rumoredly was filming for BDSY season 5 when the allegations broke, and some speculated he may have stayed on the crew despite the scathing news. It would be good to hear from Captain Glenn regarding the situation, though the network will likely be the first entity to release any official information regarding Gary and the sexual misconduct allegations. Bravo did respond to the claims in the 2023 Rolling Stone article , though that may be their only time addressing the situation.

Captain Glenn Still Supports Gary

They seem to still be close friends.

In the wake of the allegations against Gary , the captain showed his support with a comment on his Instagram account. He posted a picture of himself in “ a sea of daises ” in November 2023 addressing the accusations, writing that “ It’s sad that people will do anything in their power to bring you down ” while using multiple hashtags, including, “ #iwascancelledbecauseofalie .” Captain Glenn commented with a thumbs-up emoji that has seemingly been deleted but was reported by Us Weekly . The captain has been vocal in his support of Gary before and after the allegations.

Roughly one year since Gary’s alleged sexual misconduct was revealed, the captain hasn’t responded to the claims. Captain Glenn has always had a good relationship with the First Officer and has shown him support over the years. The show's future is unclear, though Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 is on its way soon.

Nobody was trying to reach the lowest depths of the ocean or otherwise test the boundaries of human endurance .

But what was supposed to be a routine pleasure cruise aboard a superyacht turned deadly all the same on the morning of Aug. 19 when the 184-foot Bayesian got caught in a storm and sank off the coast of Sicily .

"I can't remember the last time I read about a vessel going down quickly like that," Stephen Richter of SAR Marine Consulting told NBC News . "You know, completely capsizing and going down that quickly, a vessel of that nature, a yacht of that size."

Of the 22 people onboard, including crew, seven people died. The last of the bodies was recovered Aug. 23, an expectedly sad coda to what had already been a tragic week as the search for answers as to how this happened got underway.

And to be sure, every minute of the Bayesian's ill-fated outing is being fiercely scrutinized, starting with the general seaworthiness of the vessel itself.

"Boats of this size, they’re taking passengers on an excursion or a holiday," Richter explained. "They are not going to put them in situations where it may be dangerous or it may be uncomfortable, so this storm that popped up was obviously an anomaly. These vessels that carry passengers, they’re typically very well-maintained, very well-appointed."

But in this case, a $40 million yacht sank, seven people are dead—including a billionaire tech mogul and his 18-year-old daughter—and morbid fascination doesn't need a second wind.

Here is how the story of the Sicily yacht tragedy has unfolded so far:

What happened to the yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily?

The Bayesian had set off from the Sicilian port of Milazzo on Aug. 14 at capacity with 12 guests and 10 crewmembers aboard.

The aluminum-hulled vessel was built in 2008 by Italian shipbuilder Perini Navi and registered in the U.K. Cruise sites listed it as available for charter at $215,000 per week, per the Associated Press.

On the morning of Aug. 19, the superyacht was anchored off the coast of Porticello, a small fishing village in the Sicilian province of Palermo (also the name of Sicily's capital city), when a violent storm hit.

The vessel "suddenly sank" at around 5 a.m. local time, seemingly due to "the terrible weather conditions," the City Council of Bagheria announced shortly afterward, per NBC News .

At the time, only one person was confirmed dead—the ship's chef—but six others were said to be missing. The 15 survivors—who managed to make it onto an inflatable life boat, according to emergency officials—were rescued that morning by the crew of another yacht that had been nearby when the storm hit.

"Fifteen people inside," Karsten Borner, the Dutch captain of the ship that was able to help (the Sir Robert Baden Powell), told reporters afterward, per Reuters. "Four people were injured, three heavily injured, and we brought them to our ship. Then we communicated with the coast guard, and after some time, the coast guard came and later picked up injured people."

When the storm hit, his boat ran into "a strong hurricane gust," Borner said, "and we had to start the engine to keep the ship in an angled position."

They "managed to keep the ship in position," he continued, but once the storm died down, they realized the other boat that had been behind them—the Bayesian—was gone.

The wreck ended up settling 165 feet below the surface, according to Italy's national fire department.

Fire officials said that divers, a motorboat and a helicopter were deployed to search for the missing.

Meanwhile, footage was captured of the ship capsizing on closed-circuit TV about a half-mile away from where it was anchored.

In the video obtained by NBC News, the illuminated 250-foot aluminum mast of the ship appears to list severely to one side before disappearing completely. Survivors recalled having just a few minutes to literally abandon ship.

Who were the seven people who died when the yacht Bayesian sank?

The tragedy initially became headline news because billionaire tech mogul Mike Lynch—"Britain's Bill Gates," some U.K. media called him—was among the missing. His body was ultimately recovered Aug. 22 .

"They told me that suddenly they found themselves catapulted into the water without even understanding how they had got there," Dr. Fabio Genco, head of the Palermo Emergency Medical Services, told NBC News Aug. 22. "And that the whole thing seems to have lasted from 3 to 5 minutes."

Genco said he got to Porticello about an hour after the Bayesian capsized.

Survivors "told me that it was all dark, that the yacht hoisted itself up and then went down," he said. "All the objects were falling on them. That’s why I immediately made sure, by asking them questions, if they had any internal injuries."

Why did the yacht sink?

Italian prosecutors are investigating to determine what transpired before the boat went down, according to NBC News.

Meanwhile, the CEO of shipbuilder Perini's parent company The Italian Sea Group defended the vessel itself as "unsinkable."

Perini boats "are the safest in the most absolute sense," Giovanni Costantino told Sky News Aug. 22 . What happened to the Bayesian "put me in a state of sadness on one side and of disbelief on the other," he continued. "This incident sounds like an unbelievable story, both technically and as a fact."

Costantino said it had to have been human error that led to the boat sinking, declaring, "Mistakes were made."

"Everything that was done reveals a very long summation of errors," he told newspaper Corriere della Sera Aug. 21, in an interview translated from Italian. "The people should not have been in the cabins, the boat should not have been at anchor."

The weather was "all predictable," he continued, adding that the storm "was fully legible in all the weather charts. It couldn't have been ignored."

The yacht's captain, identified as James Cutfield of New Zealand, was taken to Termini Imerese hospital for treatment. From there, he told La Repubblica, per Sky News , that he didn't see the storm coming.

Borner, the captain of the ship that rescued the 15 Bayesian survivors, told NBC News that he noticed the storm come in at 4 a.m. local time, and saw what looked to him like a waterspout, a type of tornado that forms above water.

The International Centre for Waterspout Research posted on X Aug. 19 that it had "confirmed 18 waterspouts today off the coasts of Italy. Some were powerful waterspouts, one of which may have been responsible for the sinking of a large yacht off of Sicily."

Borner said he didn't know why the Bayesian sank so quickly, guessing "it may have something to do with the mast, which was incredibly long." (A tall mast, even with its sails down, means there's more surface area exposed to wind, which can result in tipping.)

Confirming that one person was dead and six unaccounted for immediately following the wreck on Aug. 19, Salvo Cocina of Sicily's civil protection agency told reporters that a waterspout had struck the area overnight.

"They were in the wrong place at the wrong time," he said.

The 59-year-old founder of software firm Autonomy had been on the trip with his wife Angela Bacares and their 18-year-old, Oxford-bound daughter Hannah to celebrate his recent acquittal in the U.S. on fraud and conspiracy charges stemming from the $11.7 billion purchase of his company by Hewlett-Packard in 2011.

In a bizarre turn of events, Lynch's co-defendant at trial, Stephen Chamberlain, the former vice president of finance at Autonomy, died after being taken off life support following a road accident on Aug. 17. Chamberlain's attorney told Reuters Aug. 20 that his friend and client had been out for a run when he was "fatally struck" by a car.

Meanwhile, multiple people who contributed to Lynch's defense were on the cruise with him and his family.

The bodies of Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer—who testified on Lynch's behalf—and his wife Judy Bloomer, as well as lawyer Chris Morvillo, a partner at the U.S. firm Clifford Chance, and his wife Neda Morvillo, a jewelry designer, were recovered on Aug. 21 .

In a LinkedIn post thanking the team that successfully defended Lynch, Morvillo wrote, per Sky News , "And, finally, a huge thank you to my patient and incredible wife, Neda Morvillo, and my two strong, brilliant, and beautiful daughters, Sabrina Morvillo and Sophia Morvillo. None of this would have been possible without your love and support. I am so glad to be home. And they all lived happily ever after…"

The first casualty confirmed Aug. 19 was the ship's Canadian-Antiguan chef, later identified as Recaldo Thomas.

"He was a one-of-a-kind special human being," a friend of Thomas told The Independent . "Incredibly talented, contagious smile and laugh, an incredible voice with a deep love of the ocean and the moon. I spoke to him nearly every day. He loved his life his friends and his job."

Hannah's body was the last of the missing six to be found , with divers bringing her remains ashore on Aug. 23.

Lynch and Bacares, who was rescued, also shared a 21-year-old daughter, according to The Times.

While awaiting trial, Lynch—who maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings—had spent 13 months under house arrest in San Francisco. Back home in London afterward, he admitted to The Times in July that he'd been afraid of dying in prison if he'd been found guilty. (He faced a possible 25-year sentence.)

"It's bizarre, but now you have a second life," he reflected. "The question is, what do you want to do with it?"

7 sailing superyachts for sale right now

Sailing superyacht  Silvana  is currently for sale with Camper & Nicholsons . This 56 metre yacht was built in aluminium by Perini Navi with naval architecture by Ron Holland and was delivered in 2008 as one of only two 56 metre yachts from the yard. Silvana 's statistics are impressive in that she has a 58.8 metre main mast and a 48.26 metre mizzen mast, both in aluminium, while her furling boom is in carbon fibre. Under way, she carries 1,500 square metres of sail.

An interior in neutral colours and light limed oak accommodates 12 guests in five generous cabins, two with Pullman berths and she has proved to be a popular charter yacht. Under power, her twin Caterpillar C32 engines give her a range of 3,600 nautical miles at 13 knots.

Silvana is asking €24 million.

The historic 39.56 metre classic J Class sailing yacht Endeavour is listed for sale by Edmiston & Company . Designed by the legendary C E Nicholson, she was built by UK yard Camper & Nicholsons and delivered in 1934 with the specific target of winning that year’s America’s Cup . Unfortunately Endeavour was defeated but her gorgeous lines and sailing performance continue to impress sailing enthusiasts today. The 81 year-old yacht was relaunched on 10 October 2011 having undergone a major 18-month refit at New Zealand yard Yachting Developments .

Used only privately since the refit, she now offers accommodation for eight guests in a master suite and two doubles with en suite facilities and a twin with bunk beds.

Endeavour is asking €19,950,000.

Angel's Share

The 39.95 metre sailing yacht Angel's Share is offered for sale by KK Superyachts . Built in carbon fibre by Wally Yachts to RINA class, she was delivered in 2009. A refit followed at Germany’s Lürssen yard in 2010, proving so successful that she was named Refit of the Year at the 2011 World Superyacht Awards.

Accommodation on Angel's Share is for 10 guests in four cabins consisting of a master suite, a VIP suite with two Pullman berths and two convertible cabins, all with en suite shower facilities. Under power, a 450hp MAN engine gives her a cruising speed of 12 knots, and she was last refitted in 2013.

Angel's Share is asking €12,950,000.

Antares of Grand Cayman

Sailing superyacht Antares of Grand Cayman is for sale with Y.CO and Burgess . Designed by Dixon Yacht Design , this 39.98 metre yacht was built in aluminium by Holland’s Royal Huisman yard and delivered as a cutter-rigged ketch in May 2005. An Art Deco interior is the work of Rhoades Young Design featuring French walnut wood throughout with fine detailing.

MCA compliant, Antares of Grand Cayman accommodates up to nine guests in four cabins consisting of an aft master suite with a king sized bed, a VIP suite to port and a starboard twin cabin with a Pullman berth. An office/study can also be converted into a double cabin and all cabins have full en suite bathroom facilities. Under power, an MTU 8V 2000 M70 engine gives her a cruising speed of 13 knots.

Antares of Grand Cayman is asking €12.5 million.

The 54.6 metre sailing yacht Marie is jointly listed for sale by Hoek Brokerage and Fraser Yachts . Designed by Andre Hoek, she was built in aluminium by Dutch yard Vitters and launched in 2010, going on to be a finalist at the 2011 World Superyacht Awards.

Marie  accommodates up to 10 guests in four cabins laid out as a large master suite with a king size bed and his and hers en suite bathrooms, a VIP suite also with a king size bed, plus a port and starboard twin with Pullman berths, all with en suite facilities.

The interior was designed by David Easton and the wood in the saloon and throughout the yacht is anigre, creating a warm, light atmosphere. Extensive deck spaces include an al fresco dining area on the foredeck while aft of the deckhouse is the large covered cockpit with cushioned seating and drinks tables.

The price of Marie is available on application.

Perla Del Mare

The 42.2 metre sailing yacht Perla Del Mare is listed for sale with Ocean Independence . Designed by Studio Naval, she was built in mahogany and epoxy resin by Turkey’s Saba Yacht yard and delivered in 2010. A large, airy interior is filled with natural light due to her large windows, and she can accommodate up to 12 guests in six cabins.

The accommodation layout of  _ Perla Del Mare  _is flexible and consists of two king size doubles, three queen size doubles and a twin. All staterooms have full en suite facilities. Deck spaces offer plenty of rest and recreation spaces including an aft deck with a table and chairs for 12 guests. Under power, twin Volvo Penta engines give her a range of 1,310 nautical miles at her cruising speed of 11 knots.

Perla del Mare is asking €4.5 million.

The 29 metre sailing superyacht Infinity is listed for sale with  Yachting Partners International . Award-winning designer Philippe Briand created her lines and she was custom-built in aluminium by French yard CNB with delivery in 2008.

Infinity sleeps eight guests in four well-appointed cabins and offers wonderful sailing speeds. A comfortably-sized yacht in excellent condition, she has plenty of space with lots of performance. She had a thorough maintenance period in winter 2014/2015 and was recently reduced by €500,000 by an owner keen to sell.

Infinity is asking €3,750,000.
