  • Larger powerboats, such as our pontoon boats and RIBs, can accommodate more people and go further and faster, but experience is required to rent these boats.
  • We have a number of smaller keelboats, such as our Harbour 20s and J24s, that can be rented provided you have sufficient experience.
  • We also have a variety of dinghies, including our monohull RS Zests and Fevas, as well as our catamaran Hobie T2 and Getaway. Experience is also required for these boats.

How do I reserve a boat?

  • You can reserve a boat by calling us at (416) 203-3000 or emailing [email protected] or visiting us in our office at 275 Queens Quay West. To hold a reservation, we require a 25% deposit if you are making the reservation more than 30 days before your booking and 100% of the payment if within 30 days of your booking.
  • You can make a reservation during our hours of operation; however, we do recommend that you call a few days before your intended booking time to ensure that your desired time and boat is available.
  • If your intended boat requires experience, please submit a Boating Resume on our website first. Once our staff review your resume, you will receive an email with more information about making a booking.

What do you need to rent a boat ?

  • In order to rent our Paradise F13s and Lunds, you need to be 21 years old or over with a valid G class driver’s license OR 18 years old with a Pleasure Craft Operators Card (boating license).
  • For the rest of our fleet, you will need to fill out a Boating Resume , so we know how much boating experience you have. Once your resume has been reviewed, you will be contacted with information about anything else that may be required for your rental.
  • For all boats, we will provide all required temporary licensing. You will need to provide a credit card for a damage deposit, which is returned to you at the end of your rental. You are also required to have a cellphone on the boat with you so we can reach you while you are out on the water.

 What does “experience necessary” mean?

  • Having previously taken a course.
  • Owning your own boat.
  • Previous rental history with us or another provider.
  • Prior practical experience on boats of an equivalent type and size.
  • You must fill out the Boating Resume , which asks you to outline what kind of experience you have with boats and must be approved by our management before you are permitted to take out any of our sailboats or larger powerboats. This is for your safety and the protection of our boats and equipment.

If I have no experience, which boats can I take out?

  • If you have no experience, you are eligible to rent two of our powerboats, the Paradise F13 two-seater powerboats and the Lund Fury four to five-seater powerboats. All you need to rent one of these powerboats is a valid G Driver’s License and be 21+ years old, or a Pleasure Craft Operators Card and be 18+ years old. These boats are allowed within the inner harbour only..
  • For all keelboats and larger powerboats, you also can hire a skipper/instructor for an additional fee. We require that you make the reservation at least seven days before your desired booking. Please call us at (416) 203-3000 for any cost inquiries.

How do I get boating experience?

  • You can take a course recognized by Sail Canada, which we offer for both sailing and powerboating.

What kinds of courses do you have?

  • We offer a variety of courses for both sailing and powerboating. We offer courses in dinghy sailing, keelboat sailing, powerboating, as well as ‘dry dock’ theory courses like the Toronto Harbour License, VHF Radio License, International Yacht Master Training, and Navigation courses.
  • For a full list of courses, course-start dates and pricing, visit our Courses page .

Can children take your courses?

  • We encourage children aged 6-16 to attend our sailing summer camp to gain experience on the water.
  • Children of any age may attempt the PCOC exam, however they must be 14 to take the Toronto Harbour License course and 16 to take the VHF-DSC Radio License course.
  • Our introductory courses are available to any students 16 or older, and for children aged 14-15 if accompanied by an adult.
  •  All dinghy courses are available to students 16 or older, and 15-year-olds that have successfully completed the Harbourfront Centre Camps Sailing CIT program.
  • All other cruising, powerboating, and navigation courses can be taken by any person 18 and older, or those aged 16-17 if accompanied by an adult.
  • Note: if you are booking a course for yourself and a child that requires accompaniment, please ensure that you purchase two registrations.

How fast do your boats go ?

  • Our Paradise F13s and Lunds are required to stay within the Inner Harbour which has a speed limit of 6mph, or approximately 11km/hr. The speed of these boats is limited in accordance with these speed limits.
  • Our powerboats that require more experience can reach faster speeds. The skipper of these boats will be required to judge their speed appropriately.

Which boats am I responsible for refueling ?

  • You are not responsible for refueling any of our boats. Fuel is included in the price for our small powerboats (Paradise F13s, Lunds and RIBS) and all sailboats. A flat fee will be paid at the time of your booking for larger powerboats.

Where are you allowed to go?

  • All dinghy sailboats, Paradise F13s, Lunds, and RIBs are restricted to the Inner Harbour.
  • All keel sailboats and larger powerboats are permitted to go in both the Inner and Outer Harbour. Please be aware that in the case of inclement weather, these boats may be restricted to the Inner Harbour. Any restrictions will be clearly communicated at the time of your rental.
  • Our powerboats are welcome to travel through the Toronto Islands, and you will be given a map to take with you on the boat that details where you can and cannot go.
  • No boats are permitted in the Toronto Island Airport zone and are subject to a $10,000 fine if caught in the area.

What is the difference between a keelboat and a dinghy sailboat ?

  • Keelboats have a fixed keel at the bottom of the boat. This keeps the boat upright. They also have an engine on the back. Keelboats can vary in size from two people and up.
  • Dinghies do not have a fixed keel, and therefore can capsize. You need to be able to right the boat. Dinghies do not have an engine. They are usually for 1–3 people.

How do I become a member?

  • You must fill out a Boating Resume to provide us with the details of your experience to ensure you are qualified to use our boats. Please select either J24 or Harbour 20 if you are interested in a keelboat membership; or Hobie Cat T2 or RS Zest if you are interested in a dinghy membership.
  • Once your Boating Resume has been reviewed by our staff, please phone our office at (416) 203 3000, email [email protected] or visit us at 275 Queens Quay West to join as a member.
  • Students who complete our Sail Canada Basic Cruising, Sail Canada Intermediate Cruising, Independent Dinghy Sailing, or CANSail 3 courses are eligible for discounts on Membership.

Where are you located?

  • We are located at 275 Queens Quay West, at the corner of Queens Quay and Rees Street, south of the CN Tower and a block west of Harbourfront Centre at 235 Queens Quay West.

Is there parking available?

  • The P3 Rees Street Lot is a street-level car park located on the north side of Queens Quay West, just west of Rees Street, right across from our location.

When does Boating Season begin and end?

  • We are open for operations on Victoria Day weekend in May and the season runs until Thanksgiving weekend in October.

I took my Basic Cruising exam and have not yet received my seal. When can I expect it?

  • It takes approximately 4–6 weeks for seals to be processed. If you have not received your seal and it has been longer the expected 4–6 weeks since you wrote your exam, please contact our office at (416) 203-3000 or email [email protected] .

  • Port Credit Boat Show a Success

Power Boating Canada recently attended and exhibited at the 21st Port Credit Boat Show , and once again it was a huge success for us, other exhibitors and both boat buyers and boat sellers!

Hosted by the Port Credit Harbour Marina and The Store, Mason’s Chandlery from August 26-28 the show saw good crowds and great boat buying weather. There were over 100 boats exhibited in-the-water and on the hard and over 40 land displays.

Port Credit Boat Show

Andre Ganton of Toronto Yacht Sales, who had 4 boats exhibited in the show stated: “It’s true what they say – The Port Credit Boat Show sells boats! We sold two on the second day – a 2003 Silverton 41 asking $230,000 and a Catalina 320 asking $75,000. The other two boats we brought are currently under offer, being sold to buyers who saw the vessels at the show. I’m planning to be back next year with more boats!”

The Canadian Hydrographic Services has attended the show for the past ten years. Representative, Fred Oliff stated that they get “great client connect opportunities of a kind not found at other shows!”

First time exhibitor, Chris Sellner of C.A.S. Power Marine was pleasantly surprised with the results of their first show. They sold a 2007 Doral 265 Bow Rider, with serious interest in another boat. ‘We will be expanding our display for next year’ stated Sellner.

The Speaker’s Tent, a regular show feature, was packed to the rafters, featuring seminars from Wally Moran, Rob and Mary MacLeod, Katrina Lewis and Doug and Brenda Dawson. Newcomers Paul Svastal and Marnie Keith-Murray were well received with their great boating stories.

“We had a number of new exhibitors and new boats this year” stated Mason.  “We’ve got some great ideas for next year and looking forward to an even better show in 2012!”

For next year, the Port Credit In-Water Boat Show will be held August 24-26, 2012 at the Port Credit Harbour Marina.

Editor Brad here and I’m just back from the Yamaha Media Days for 2011 at the beautiful Deerhurst Resort in Muskoka.  Yamaha’s team once again extended a welcome and open hand to the media in advance of their dealer meeting and Power Boating Canada was there.  Amidst rain and cold (brrrrr…) winds, we got on and in and around all the new models.  Stay tuned to the pages of Power Boaitng Canada magazine in the coming months for complete tests on Yamaha’s all new for 2012 19 foot Sportboat the SX 190 and much more!!!

ORILLIA POKER RUN & WATERFRONT FESTIVAL

100% PURE FAMILY FUN!

Power Boating Canada is back in Orillia !

It was over 20 years ago when Power Boating Canada Magazine set up the very first Orillia Poker Run.

After a tremendously successful event, the stage was set, and Power Boating Canada turned the event over to the Orillia Chamber of Commerce and the City of Orillia to operate.

Today, Power Boating Canada is staging a series of Family Boating Rendezvous Poker Runs across the nation, with more than $5000 in cash and prizes to be won at each event.

The Orillia Waterfront Festival will be the final stop on the Power Boating Canada Rendezvous Tour for 2011 – join us August 6, 2011, for a wonderful day of family fun on the water!  Download the Registration Form and bring your boat and the entire crew for a great day on the water.

On Aug. 11-12 this year, Melanie Price will attempt to swim 42k across Lake Ontario from Port Dalhousie to Oakville to raise funds for Lake Ontario Waterkeeper (LOW), a registered charity working to restore and maintain the ability to swim, drink and fish in LakeOntario. Through the swim, Melanie hopes to increase awareness of the need to protect Lake Ontario’s natural resources and encourages everyone to “Help put the Great back into the Lake” so we can all benefit and appreciate the Great Lake for years to come.

LOW conducts research to identify threats to water quality and natural habitat and to monitor trends in environmental law. LOW is also a member of the internationally-recognized Waterkeeper Alliance. This New York-based group is led by Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and provides a link between the world’s 180-plus independent waterkeepers.  Charitable donations to LOW are greatly appreciated and can be made through Melanie’s giving page: http://www.canadahelps.org/gp/11261

Melanie trains regularly with Burlington Masters Swim Club (BMSC) and has also been adding a 7.5k swim in mid-week and a 12k in on the weekend.  The mileage will continue to build and she is excited for open water (OW) season and swimming with the Lake Ontario Swim Team (LOST), based in Oakville. The crossing is physically challenging, but there are also organizational and financial challenges.  Solo Swims of Ontario (SSO) regulates the swim and sets boats and other requirements to ensure safety.  For her attempt, Melanie still needs to procure a large 30 foot “tail” boat capable of a speed of at least 15 knots and 2 inflatable boats, at least 14 feet in length with 7.5 to 15 HP motors (complete boat requirements can be found on page 13 at http://www.soloswims.com/SSORI.pdf ).  Those willing and able to help in this regard can contact Melanie at [email protected] .    For more information please visit Melanie’s website at: http://melaniepriceadventures.blogspot.com/

New PCOC Regulations

All boaters regardless of the size of their boat, need to be aware of some changes to the Pleasure Craft Operator Card boating competency exam that took effect on April 15, 2011.

Last Friday, Transport Canada introduced these stricter exam standards.  “The main objective of the National Pleasure Craft Operator Competency Program is to have more knowledgeable boaters through education and training, thereby reducing the number and severity of boating-related incidents on our waterways,” said Transport Canada spokeswoman Melanie Quenell.  The idea of the program is a way to increase safety on all waterways.

The competency exam was increased to 50 questions (from 36 previously), and requires the individual taking the test to complete a mandatory three hour study course.   This requirement holds whether they take the course online (which was the most popular method prior to these changes) or they take the course in a classroom setting.  After passing 5 separate chapter tests before being allowed to progress, the final exam is now 50 questions.  The online version no longer requires a proctor or supervisor, however, allowing people to take the course from home.  The study course need not be completed in one sitting, as the student can return and do the course in chapter segments.  Challenging the exam is no longer permitted.

There are some estimated 8 million boaters in Canada and approximately half of them still need to obtain their PCOC card.  Failing to do so, and operating any motorized vessel in any Canadian waters could land you a fine of $250, levied by both the police and conservation officers.  All operators of powered watercraft used for recreational purposes within Canada require the card as of September 15 2009.  There is no grandfather clause or age exemption – this law applies to all boaters. Powered watercraft includes watercraft fitted with any size motor — even an electric trolling motor.  This requirement applies even if the engine isn’t on or running.  If the boat has an engine you have to obtain a PCOC, and carry it on  board at all times.

Power Boating Canada supports these new regulations as they mean better education and thus more informed and safer boaters.  For full details on the changes visit www.tc.gc.ca/eng/marinesafety/menu.htm

BRP donates clothing to Japan

BRP will donate warm clothing to relief efforts in Japan.  The clothing was distributed to its subsidiary, BRP Japan, who will redirect it to people most in need.

“The Japan earthquake and tsunami has left so many homeless during such a cold time of the year,” said José Boisjoli, president and CEO. “We hope that by providing direct relief, we can ease some of the hardships felt by survivors. On behalf of all BRP employees, our thoughts are with them.”

BRP has operated a direct distribution network in Kanagawa prefecture, Japan since February 2000, which was not affected by the March 11 event. Transport of the clothing to Narita airport from Europe was partially sponsored by FedEx, and from Australia by Trade Logistics.

Fishnet being re-installed at Pickering Nuclear Plant

Fish diversion program had very successful first year

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) divers are finishing the installation of a fish protection net at the mouth of Pickering Nuclear’s Water Intake channel.

“We’re starting our second full year of operation and our preliminary research shows we’ve significantly reduced the volume of fish entering our water intake channel,” said Glenn Jager, Senior Vice President Pickering A.

Preliminary results show that the project will reduce the number of fish entering the channel by 80 per cent annually, which is the target set by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission.

“We’ve reduced the number of alewives and other smaller fish like goby fish entering the channel and have also seen drops in the numbers of Brown Bullheads,” Jager said.

The net is about 610 metres long with a half inch mesh. It’s anchored to the lake bottom and has 19 lighted buoys to warn boaters. It sits about 80 metres from the southern tip of the intake channel.

The fish net is part of a comprehensive program that has included restoring fish habitat and wetlands at Duffin’s Creek, Frenchman’s Bay and Hydro Marsh.

Powerboating and Sailing

Gwaii haanas national park reserve, national marine conservation area reserve, and haida heritage site, gwaii haanas welcomes boaters.

Come and explore a place known for its more than 200 islands and awe-inspiring Haida village sites.

Check out our Trip Planner  (PDF 8.0 MB).

Call the Gwaii Haanas office (1-877-559-8818) for information on how to obtain your visitor trip permit

Incredible Diversity

Powerboating and sailing are the most popular ways to travel in Gwaii Haanas and they offer an incredible opportunity to experience the interconnections between land and sea. The waters around Gwaii Haanas teem with life - whales, porpoises, salmon, halibut, rockfish, mussels, crab, starfish, seabirds and much more. Travelling via your own boat or on a guided trip allows for intimate exploration of secluded coves and open seas.

Big Tides, Big Weather

Study the tides, currents and weather to ensure you are aware of the potential hazards of travelling in Gwaii Haanas.

Preserve and Protect

Although boats tend to produce only small amounts of pollution, waste concentrates in especially sensitive areas and accumulates, harming marine organisms. Every boater that travels in Gwaii Haanas has a responsibility to the marine environment and should review these Green Boating practices.

Facilities are minimal in Gwaii Haanas and there is no fuel available. Boaters should be self-sufficient.

Anchoring Policy

All vessels are requested to move after a maximum of three nights in any one bay, cove, or inlet, weather permitting.
