Not just his $156 million superyacht, the U.S. authorities want to seize this Russian steel billionaire’s private jet and custom helicopter. One of the first yachts to go dark, this lavish 325 feet vessel has a transforming helipad that neatly folds into a squash court.

Ending his sea-faring dreams for good, Bill Gates has listed ‘Wayfinder,’ the support vessel to his hydrogen-powered superyacht, for $59 million. The vessel has a helipad that doubles as a pickleball court, a medical room, a fold-out gym, and a garage filled with water toys.

The superyacht accidents continue – In the middle of the day, a brand new $20 million vessel collided with the dock in St. Tropez and suffered minor structural damage. The 112-foot vessel was coming into berth when it hit a pontoon.

LVMH CEO Bernard Arnault’s $150 million superyacht was denied docking and banned entry into an Italian port – The centibillionaire’s 333-feet long yacht is too big for the Naples port, and it alone would occupy four spots and hinder the movement of other vessels.

What It's Really Like to Design a Luxury Yacht

The floating oases are often more involved than (on land) homes.

There are plenty of factors to think about when designing a high-end home on land—let alone one on water. Just ask luxury houseboat designer J. David Weiss, chief design officer at Bravada Yachts and founder of Designova Creative , a yacht design consulting company based in Raleigh, North Carolina. From major considerations such as scale and materials to custom elements, including playful add-ons (helipad, pool, or submarine, anyone?)—there’s a mile-long laundry list of points to take into account. So, where to start? “I try to begin by allowing whatever is bubbling up—their excitement for what the project could be,” Weiss says, “allowing my experience to check boxes and parameters as the clients gush out their dreams.” He then follows up with a tidal wave of clarifying questions. “Their answers are always helpful to hear, unearthing the heart of the project bit by bit.” Once Weiss has a good sense of what the client is looking for, he digs deeper, taking care not to get too wrapped up in all the particulars during the first stages of planning. “Trying to boil the ocean that early is a losing battle,” he explains. “All the details will emerge and evolve over time anyway.”

First and foremost, it's crucial to understand a vessel's intended use. If you ask Palm Beach-based designer Danielle Rollins , structure is key: "On a boat there is a place for everything, and everything goes in its place," she says. "Installs have to be very precise because everything is interdependent and fits together like a puzzle."

Rollins likes to start with a clear palette in mind. "Keeping things in an edited color scheme gives it an instant ship-shape look—pun intended," she enthuses.

“The key is to ensure that it is truly “human friendly,” says Weiss. First off, it must be comfortable, allowing for ease of movement between the different decks and areas. Second, it should be flexible, “with adaptable arrangements of traffic flow and furniture use.” And lastly, it has to have “intelligent proportions” between communal spaces, private spaces, and crew spaces, if it is a crewed vessel,” he notes.

Comfort is also paramount: "Whatever is in the floor needs to feel good because you don’t wear shoes on a boat," Rollins explains. "Performance materials are key—spills are a given."

Below, we picked Rollins and Weiss's brains about what goes into designing a luxury abode on water.

How long does it take to build a custom yacht?

The average custom boat (30 to 50 meters) can take anywhere from two to five months to design, plus another 18 to 24 months to build—but a vessel longer than 75 meters can take more than 48 months to engineer, craft, and deliver. “Semi-custom and production vessels can cut this time down considerably, by almost half,” Weiss reveals. “But it is rare to find any production vessels above 30 meters, which is why nearly all vessels larger than that are fully custom.”

How does it most differ from designing a home on land?

“There are many more elements and stages with a yacht that must be decided before starting any of the interior layout or interior design,” Weiss says. For instance, the type and location of the bodies of water a client intends to visit will dictate the kinds of materials used, as well as the shape of the vessel. And any performance requirements (i.e. speed and power) will determine the amount and shape of space needed for the boat’s inner workings—from its engines and battery banks to exhaust routing, vibration countermeasures, and sound isolation. "Everything has to be very well made," Rollins insists, since "things take a real beating in the salt air."

In addition, "We have to consider significant accommodation for storage of sensitive materials, fuel storage—not just for the yacht, but also for any additional smaller boats or water toys kept in the tender garage, or helicopter kept on board—and other supplies for longer voyages,” Weiss notes.

And unlike building a regular house, floating homes need to meet all of the client’s needs and wants at once—“you can’t just add a wing if you suddenly decide to expand your guest rooms,” he says. Upon completion, the floating home “must be a unified symphony of features, engineering, beauty, structure, experiences, utilities, and textures.”

Another important point: "While it sounds comically simple, you have to envision whatever goes in has to withstand a 12-foot roll in all directions," says Rollins. "Things have to be weighted, secured, and attached. The last thing you want is a call saying the sofa flew overboard!"

What are three things every luxury houseboat should have?

Plush upholstery, luxurious flooring, and mixed lighting—so it’s not all coming from overhead—plus focal pieces of art and luxurious bedding and linens should all be standard in a luxury houseboat, Rollins says. "Visibility for clear navigation and awareness of surroundings is a must,” Weiss asserts. “That feature also usually means a lot of vista windows,” so it’s a plus for both safety and the guest experience. “Live and PTZ cameras that are easily accessible from the helm and watch any potential blind spots are crucial for proper navigation,” he adds. “At larger scales, bow thrusters and other stabilizing features—such as Seakeepers or zero-speed stabilizers—are life savers for the challenge of maneuvering these sizable creatures.”

Describe a boat you’ve designed that you’re especially proud of.

“The vessels Invictus and Upgrade are two of the new Atlas Series of 80-foot vessels I have designed with Bravada, and are examples of a truly 21st Century approach to the age old world of houseboating," Weiss exclaims.

“I also worked with Omega Architects’s NL and Frank Laupman to carve a new DNA for Heesen Yachts in the Netherlands, when we won the design quest for the 213-foot Galactica Star —the largest and most efficient yacht ever built by the storied yacht builder.” The winning vessel, he notes, was “the very first example of the legendary FDHF (fast displacement hull form) by the hull magicians Piet & Perry Van Oossanen in Holland, and was also the first collaboration between our team and Bannenberg & Rowell in the UK, direct descendant of the convention-breaking studio established by Jon Bannenberg, the “godfather” of modern yacht design.”

As for Rollins, "I’ve done several boats in my design history, including an impressive 300-footer," she says—but her favorite nautical undertaking to date is Grace , an 86-foot-long motor yacht she recently purchased with her fiancé, Tom D'Agostino. "We did a whirlwind renovation interior redo while the boat was dry docked in the yard in a crazy three-week timeframe that was executed with military precision," she reveals. "I had everything lined up so that as soon as the old furniture and carpet came out, new carpet went down the following day, and the furniture was installed right after that."

How much does a luxury houseboat cost to build and deliver?

“It depends largely on how the decisions are made for details and scale,” Weiss says. “However, the 80- to 100-foot-long luxury houseboats we are building right now with Bravada Yachts in the U.S. are priced between $1.8 million to $3.5 million.”

What are your top sources for inspiration?

Rollins loves to scour boats from the 1930s through 1970s—"particularly the Feadships, which are my favorite," she reveals, adding: "The work of Michele Bonan is always a good start, and Ralph Lauren never seems to disappoint."

When it came to imagining the interiors of Grace , the well-traveled designer drew a lot of creative elements from the Cipriani restaurant in Mexico City. "Its decor references the glory days of glamorous travel aboard steamships with highly varnished teak, brightly polished stainless steel, and a streamlined palette of crisp blue and white," Rollins explains. "I was drawn to the brightwork—a boating term used to describe exposed metal and varnished woodwork—and wanted to emphasize the modern clean lines of the interior while creating a barefoot-casual, comfortable, and classic decorating scheme."

“It may sound cliche, but I truly find inspiration everywhere,” Weiss gushes. “I have over 70,000 images saved in my library, and each brings its own flavor into my world. Some of these things include biomimicry, parametric architecture, the way the light changes in different parts of the world, fantastical new environments and elements shaped for film and TV, and my fellow creatives in the world of finely shaped and crafted watercraft.”

A yacht is really just a luxury floating home . When you’re talking 70 feet and larger, they’re a lot nicer than my house. As you’ll see in the luxury yacht interiors below, the quality and aesthetics are simply gorgeous. And we merely feature a small handful of such boats. There are thousands and thousands of these worldwide.

Yacht Primary Bedrooms (Staterooms)

We kick off our yacht interiors gallery with the stateroom. When it comes to the primary bedroom on these boats, no expense is spared. They are large, comfortable and stunning in design. These bedrooms are bigger than our primary bedroom.

Yacht Guest Bedrooms (2 Beds)

Many guest bedrooms on a yacht have two beds so that it can accommodate more people. However, they are, as you’ll see below, still very, very luxurious. These are certainly cozy sleeping quarters.

Salon and Dinette Photos

My favorite room on the boat is the salon and/or dinette area. In many cases, the dinette doubles as the living room. Mega yachts have dedicated salons and dining areas. I love these superb lounge designs below in the cabin as well as the upper lounge areas.

I must admit that kitchens on these super yachts are fairly small. I guess the cooking is done by the staff and yacht owners prefer to have more space for bedrooms, deck space and lounge space. That makes sense given there really is limited space. Nevertheless, these kitchens are gorgeous and the yacht designers certainly didn’t skimp with respect to quality.

Most boats dedicate very little space to bathrooms. Not these. The primary bathrooms below are incredible. The smaller bathrooms are guest bathrooms. These luxury yachts are so large and spacious that even the bathrooms are both beautiful and comfortable to use.

Timmerman Yachts is a Russian builder of quality luxury motor yachts. Based in Moscow, it is owned by a group of Dutch and Russian investors and operates out of Moscow Shipyard. Several noted naval architecture and yacht design firms are involved with Timmerman, including Vripack, Guido de Groot Design, Ginton Naval Architects, Jon Bannenberg Ltd., and Francis Design Ltd.

Founded in 2003, the company was named for 17th century Dutch boat builder Franz Timmerman who brought Dutch boat manufacturing techniques to Russia and co-founded the Russian navy. Timmerman Yachts has more than 1,000 employees working at the Moscow Shipyard.

Timmerman has delivered a number of semi-custom luxury yachts between 26-47 metres in length, including TM26 and Timmerman FD-51, designed by Francis Design Ltd. Other notable Timmerman yachts include Victoria M, Alexandra (now Latitude) and Olsten 125′.

One of the 10 largest yacht builders in the world, Timmerman is focused on building high-quality luxury yachts at more competitive prices. Its Russian-Dutch partnership provides great yacht-building capabilities. Timmerman builds yacht to the highest standards and holds DNV, MCA and Russian River Register certification. The company reportedly has more than a dozen yachts in some phase of construction.

What Life Might Look Like on the World’s Biggest Yacht

On a Tuesday morning in September, a six-foot-long plastic model of a boat sat on the second floor of the Explorers Club, looking a little like a beached Orca, sleek and out of place in the tweedy boardroom. The tiny yacht had traveled to East 70th Street from Los Angeles and, before that, made stops in Monaco and Zurich, Cannes, and West Palm Beach — a prop to entice buyers who can spend $10 million on a cabin in the world’s biggest yacht. If it gets made. The boat will be called the Ulyssia and it’s the passion project of Frank Binder, a billionaire from the Merck clan with a thing for boats (he once owned a shipyard in Monaco). Lenny Kravitz, his friend, is onboard to help design interiors. (“He’s a genius.”)

Binder has been doing a world tour to find other buyers — who might be hard to meet. Maintenance hovers around 3 percent a year, or $300,000 for that $10 million one-bedroom. It’s a big ask, especially for a boat that, if he does get recruits, won’t launch until 2028. To help, Binder brought on two former executives from the World , the luxury liner that was the first — and only — to prove rich people want to live … at sea, all year. (It launched in 2002, is still sold out, and has yet to snag on an iceberg or go bankrupt.)

Renato Chizzola , a senior vice-president for the Ulyssia who worked as the general manager of the World for five years, spoke to Curbed about the terrors of elephant seals and why he once hired Israeli snipers to come onboard.

This interview has been condensed and edited for clarity. 

What did your job on the World look like?? 

I was in charge of lifestyle, expedition, everything — even the kitchen. You have a captain who’s the master of the vessel, and he ultimately will have the last word on safety, security, where we go, where we can’t go. But then you also need to have somebody who has grown up in a galley carrying luggage. I’m 60 in October. When I was 27, I said, “Okay, how can I see the world without having money?” So in 1993, I was hired on the Queen Elizabeth II , then went to hotels, cruises, and in 46 years I traveled to 186 countries. I was allowed to live onboard and basically extend any service, any dream that a resident had.

What’s the difference between this superyacht and the World ? 

The World is now 23 years old. She was created in the late ’80s. She looks like a cruise ship. And the  Ulyssia is a yacht — the designer says this is his masterpiece.

We never had many amenities on the World . Here, we have a deli. We have a library with a card and games room. We have a table-tennis room. We have two paddle-tennis courts all inside, a multipurpose sports deck up there where the helicopters are, two hangers, two submarines to go down to the ocean, seven restaurants.

Then, we have this inflatable marina off the back of the boat. Imagine we’re near Bermuda. It’s a beautiful day. The sea is calm. We stop and we inflate this — it takes an hour — and we have tenders. You can go diving right there off the ship. The sea is yours. This marina is something the World could never ever have done, because there’s no space in the boat to keep that. The World was more elderly, a bit elderly retired. This is way younger. Why? Because we have so many amenities and offer adventure. Here, we are offering fewer apartments with more space. The balconies are huge. Luxury, for them, means space, time and getting whatever they wish, whenever, wherever. Freedom.

Freedom , in a contained location — 

Yes, and in a safe environment, completely protected against any danger. If a resident says, “I want to bring my family there, I want to be safe, I want to have no worries,” safety needs to be core to us. They want the freedom to do what they do at home — to run around with suits, jewelry. And if they are smart enough to say, “I want to go and see real scenarios, not luxury hotels,” they can go places where there’s no luxury and see how the world really works. That’s what this community wants.

Sounds like a security nightmare. 

We will hire ex-Mossad physically, to be on the ship. On the World , we partnered with Marine Guard, one of the world’s best safety and security companies . It provides technical and physical support. And whenever we went to critical places — for example, when we went through the Gulf of Aden, I brought in Israeli snipers to come on the boat. Nobody, no pirate on earth can come in past them. Then on shore excursions, we have every form of security that you can imagine. Satellite images. Images underwater, over water. When we went to Antarctica, to the Northwest Passage — meeting with the Inuits, the Aborigines — you need people who know them. You need people who safeguard you. In the Antarctic, you are only allowed to go with Zodiacs to the beaches. You need people who know that, who know the sea lions, the penguins. We bring them onboard — 20 or 25 people who know everything about every area. And when we do expeditions, we bring on EYOS, one of the greatest expedition leaders in the world, which goes to places like the Titanic .

Is this, like the Titanic , experimental in any way?

No, there are similar yachts. But in four years, when she will hopefully leave port, she will be the greenest yacht of this size ever built. And at that time, we may build for whatever is available in terms of fuel, whether it’s methanol or nuclear. There are vessels already going nuclear, military vessels.

But isn’t this all risky? 

It’s the opposite. You will see more and more environments like this at sea. Why? Because you can escape anything! If there’s an outbreak in New York, a big virus, you just won’t go there. If there’s a war there, you just don’t go there. If there’s a storm, you don’t go there.

So this will be a way for the global elite, basically, to pay to avoid any problem.

Is it going to be a one percent community? Yes, obviously, but they need to do good around the world, otherwise they cannot come to the community.

Imagine the following. We will have a medical center onboard. We have MRI machines. We have a dentistry. Our doctors, when we go to the west coast of Africa, to Senegal, we can have our doctors go out and help. And as we go around the world, we will help to map the ocean floor. We’ll have tools available to measure and send these to oceanic institutions that then take this data. So we are helping to make the world a better place. And that’s the legacy.

How are you going to gauge whether the people who want to live here also want to do good? 

There’s a very tough background check before being allowed to buy. So can it be that a Colombian drug lord or a Russian weapons dealer comes and says, “Oh, I’m going to take ten?” No, that can’t happen. We’re not a community for people from mainland China who don’t speak English and want to spit around. Or aggressive Russians. We are not a community for sheikhs from any Arab countries. And I have nothing against the Chinese and Russians. I love everybody. I’ve been everywhere. But they just don’t fit here, and they won’t come. We want like-minded golf players, tennis players, joggers, bikers, F1 drivers.

We will have roughly 30 to 35 percent Europeans, 30 to 35 percent North Americans, including from Canada, possibly a few from Mexico City, a few from São Paulo. Then we have about 20 percent from Australia, South Africa, Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan. Then we expect to have about 10 percent of people from all over, we don’t know where. It could be anywhere.

They’ll need a certain amount of money to get into this boat and I assume, therefore, that you can’t be that picky. 

No, we can’t. But we try to be. It’s a balance. We meet them three, four, five, six times. We invite them, show them something, then they say, “Oh, I trust these people. I believe in them.” It’s a slow process.

Can a buyer get kicked off?

Oh, absolutely.

What’s the justice system?

There’s a board that’s voted in and we have our chairman on the board. Almost all of the members are people who have either been on yachts, have their own yacht, or have led organizations.

If people have their own yachts, why would they sign up for this? 

They might have a beautiful yacht of a hundred meters, but they can’t hire all these education guides, explorers all the time. We have 22 guest suites. Imagine we’re coming to Japan. Blossom season. We bring an ex Japanese prime minister onboard, maybe a three-star Michelin chef. We bring them on, let’s say, three weeks before. And they lecture. We can have experts speak about anything. Volcanoes, health and wellness, food and beverage, politics, archeology.

And they have you, who’s been to 186 countries. 

Exactly. So when I do speak to people who want to buy and invite them for lunch or a coffee, they listen because they know, Oh, this guy has been there. You don’t need to tell them something that you think can happen. You can actually tell them a story. When I went to Antarctica the last time, in 2009, on the way back to the Zodiac, I am walking and these big elephant seals — those are the big guys, like three tons and ten feet long — and all of a sudden, out of nowhere, there’s a big sound like MWUGHOWUGH and a big one came up, out of the sand. I stood there frozen. These are moments when you think, Is this really happening to me? How fortunate, how lucky am I to be able to experience moments like this? And all the wealthy people say the same.

THE Bayesian superyacht sank with Mike Lynch's two hyper-encrypted hard drives that may contain MI5 secrets, reports Italian media.

The billionaire businessman tragically died with his daughter on board the doomed yacht off the coast of Sicily last month when the vessel was hit by a tornado.

Reports claim the tech entrepreneur had a pair of hard drives that may hold secret information on the world's most powerful spy agencies on board.

Divers are now scouring the sea floor for the crucial disks at the bottom of the sea before they fall into the wrong hands, reports La Repubblica - Italy's second-biggest newspaper.

Sources told the paper the disks held: "the great digital archive of the IT entrepreneur whose clients included the British MI5, the American NSA and the Israeli services".

The Italian newspaper said the "super drives" are protected by "cutting-edge encryption".

But the drives now could be a target for the hostile spy agencies of Russia, China, and Iran as they seek to steal valuable secrets.

Lynch reportedly did not trust the cloud to save his high-level business secrets so always had the hard drives on him.

The billionaire partly made his wealth by creating algorithms and software widely used by top Western security agencies.

His company Autonomy won high-profile contracts with governments, including a deal to provide infrastructure to the US Homeland Security for the post-9/11 war on terror.

The Bayesian is also reported to hold other documents in the ship's safe that could also be highly valuable.

James Bond fan Lynch also co-founded the cybersecurity company Darktrace and employed high-ranking intelligence agents for the firm.

Investigators from Palermo have pulled no personal effects of the seven victims and 15 survivors from the ocean yet.

But last week, divers recovered surveillance equipment from the yacht that will hopefully be able to shed light on its final moments afloat.

Divers have also recovered the ship's onboard hard drives as they continue their investigation.

However, the ship had no black box and there are worries the Bayesian's hard drives may not be water resistant.

The captain of the doomed Bayesian,  James Cutfield, 51, is being investigated for manslaughter .

Kiwi Cutfield, along with two other members of his crew, are being investigated by Italian authorities for culpable shipwreck and multiple manslaughter.

Prosecutors are also probing ship engineer  Tim Parker-Eaton, from Clophill, Beds, and sailor Matthew Griffith, 22  under the same charges.

The 184 ft Bayesian was carrying 22 people when it sank within minutes of being hit by a downburst - a strong, localised wind - while anchored in Porticello near Palermo.

The  luxury  vessel was caught up in a tornado which caused it to sink in the early hours of the morning.

Fifteen of those on board were rescued on a life raft, while the yacht’s cook Recaldo Thomas was discovered dead in the water shortly afterwards.

Specialist divers recovered the bodies of billionaire Lynch, 59, and four of his guests, from the first cabin on the left.

Officials said the victims had scrambled to reach air pockets in the yacht, which sank 164ft stern-first before rolling onto its right side on the seabed. 

Investigators are understood to be rifling through CCTV footage and photographs taken by locals on the night of the storm to understand why the boat sank so quickly. 

Chief Prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio said the victims would have been asleep when a tornado-like waterspout struck the boat, leaving them unable to escape.

Lynch had just won a court case over the sale of Autonomy to tech giant HP after being accused of fraudulently raising the price.

The 59-year-old had been living under house arrest in San Francisco, US, with just his beloved dog Faucet for company, for well over a year.

He was finally acquitted just months ago and spoke about longing to spend time with his wife, Angela Bacares and their two daughters.

In 1996, he started software company Autonomy, which would be used to analyse huge swathes of data from unstructured sources like phone calls, emails and videos.

Describing his small team he said: “Eccentric people working really hard on a project. No bureaucracy. No admin. Lots of late nights, lots of eating cold pizza”.

Autonomy became an instant success and benefitted from the dotcom boom, which led it to join the FTSE 100 of top UK listed companies. 

The achievements with Mike, the chief executive officer, at the helm led to considerable praise including receiving an OBE for services to enterprise in 2006. 

Inside The Bayesian's final 16 minutes

Data recovered from the Bayesian's Automatic Identification System (AIS) breaks down  exactly how it sank  in a painful minute-by-minute timeline.

At 3.50am on Monday August 19 the Bayesian began to shake "dangerously" during a fierce storm, Italian outlet  Corriere  revealed.

Just minutes later at 3.59am the boat's anchor gave way, with a source saying the data showed there was "no anchor left to hold".

After the ferocious weather ripped away the boat's mooring it was dragged some 358 metres through the water.

By 4am it had began to take on water and was plunged into a blackout, indicating that the waves had reached its generator or even engine room.

At 4.05am the  Bayesian fully disappeared  underneath the waves.

An emergency GPS signal was finally emitted at 4.06am to the coastguard station in Bari, a city nearby, alerting them that the vessel had sunk.

Early reports suggested the disaster struck around 5am local time off the coast of Porticello Harbour in Palermo, Sicily.

The new data pulled from the boat's AIS appears to suggest it happened an hour earlier at around 4am.

Some 15 of the 22 onboard were rescued, 11 of them scrambling onto an inflatable life raft that sprung up on the deck.

A smaller nearby boat - named Sir Robert Baden Powell - then helped take those people to shore.
