2024 HUNTER F1 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP RESULTS

Well done to Marty O'Leary, Paddy Blackley, Tom Moran, and Rachel O'Leary on winning the UK Hunter Formula 1 National Championships  

8 Boats entered the 2024 F1 Nationals Championships. Again held at Rutland Sailing Club. 6 boats from RSC and 2 boats made it all the way from Ireland.

Friday saw light shifty winds  giving the race officers and mark layer some hard work to keep the racing flowing. All three races won by Marty O'Leary and team in Usain Boat. They certainly were quick!! With Josh Wilce and team in Evolution placed 2nd and Dara McDonagh and team in Bitz placed 3rd overall.

Saturday brought some heavy breeze with forecast of gust to 27kts. One such gust recorded at 31kts leading to a knock down for one F1. Racing was tight but again Usain Boat took 3 out of 4 wins maintaining the standings from Friday.

Sunday brought some good breeze but shifts of 50 deg. created a further headache for the Race officers and only 2 races completed. Usain Boat and Evolution taking a 1st and 2nd each.

Thanks to all competitors and Rutland Sailing Club for facilitating the event.

Brand History:

The guiding force behind Formula’s vision of excellence is the Victor B. Porter family, with Chairman Vic Porter and four sons and a daughter actively managing the business. Don Aronow founded Formula in 1962 in Miami, Florida. The original 233 deep-V hull design was built at his direction and later earned notable victories on the national offshore racing circuit.

Formula was the first of Aronow’s boat companies. While many of today’s Formulas have matured well beyond the speed-only image, the prestige originating with past racing victories is still quite evident in the highly successful FAS³TECH series. In 1961 Thunderbird was acquired by Alliance Machine and Foundry and they followed up by purchasing Formula in 1964. Both Formula and Thunderbird models were then produced in North Miami. An Atlanta-based conglomerate, Fuqua Industries, acquired Thunderbird /Formula in 1969.

ic Porter once again exercised his entrepreneurial spirit in 1970 and, along with five business associates, founded the Signa Corporation. This venture resulted in a quality line of tri-hull boats manufactured in Decatur and marketed throughout the Midwest and East.

Hunter Formula 1 Sailing Yacht With Excellent Trailer

Superbly fun little sporty yacht. I have not owner her very long, having bought her less than a year ago, but I've had an incredible amount of fun already. The thing is, this has been so much fun, I have managed to wangle permission to super-size our boating, so the mini size must go 1st. As many boaty folk will be aware, Hunter are very good at making small and sporty boats, but practical ones too. Also, Stephen Jones (unusual for Hunter, who tended to build David Thomas' designs) is known for his speedy and good looking designs.

They came together and did something special with the F1. She is light, very light (OK, she is very simple inside, and the GRP is thin, but Kevlar reinforced), an super nippy. She came before the wide bum modern 'sportsboats', but later than the heavier and less hydrodynamic IOR style boats- flat bottom after the keel (which bolts solidly down) and tall skinny mast, with a big main. Most of these are raced on lakes- largely Rutland and Windermere, where I bought her, but there are a few out on the salt. I heard concerns about sailing one around here, but even solo (as I tend to sail), she's a hoot!

Light on the helm and well balanced rig, she wiggles about and plays around merrily. The main issue in waves is that some may slow her down briefly, but then she'll pick back up again- 8 knots, 4 knots, 8 knots, four... That was a fun ride I recall with a grin. And so far I've only used the small dacron jib- the 2 laminate genoas are away in storage, as are the 2 spinnakers, pole and good main (all those North, bar one Goacher spi), the main I use is an older that I had slides added to for going solo (bolt rope elsewise). I have been known to play in too much wind with no reefs, just giggling along, but reefing is simple. Anyway... there is a recent Honda BF5 4 Stroke (inc new tank and line, and has a charging socket), and a couple of older 2 strokes (Johnson twin 4.5 and Tohatsu single 3.5 IIRC), a new (bought new a while back but fitted beginning of year) Raymarine Autohelm 1000 Autopilot (very very useful when solo), 2x 85AH batteries (removable separately if weight an issue) wired to switch panel, new LED nav lights, and recently got a 'new' unused Garmin 85 (lit) compass, but not yet fitted.

And a handheld VHF. Various other bits'n bobs- lines, fenders, anchors (1 grapnel, 1 small Bruce type) with chain/rope, stuff'n nonsense. Also have a cruising chute in a snuffer that I was very kindly given and fits despite being from, from all sources, a MacGregor 26. Only tried once in light wind, but set well and easy to use. Hmmm, I should have said it has an asymmetric!

The trailer is a recent galvanised treat with a custom mount cradle for the boat- allows transport/maintenance with keel down (painting keel helps...). Brakes work well and it's easy to move around being quite light (I even managed to move the boat on it across gravel, by grunt alone; not far admittedly, but still). Good hitch, jockey and new LED lighting board. If not needed, can wiggle a bit if the Honda engine not needed, but would rather sell together. Viewings easily arranged- I live and work near by.

She is living in a marina in Gosport (the nice one, ahem), where despite her modesty, I get numerous compliments.
