Enterprise: Is this restored 12 Metre the best yacht to never contest the America’s Cup?
Enterprise is a 1977 S&S-designed 12 Metre, originally built to defend the America’s Cup, and fully restored in time for this year’s 12 Metre World Championships in Rhode Island. Dave Powlison reports Among the 21 elegant Twelves lining the docks at Rhode Island’s Fort Adams for this summer’s 12 Metre World Championship, sat a yacht that for many was a huge disappointment. Enterprise , built for the 1977 America’s Cup , had everything going for her, but never got the invitation to the Cup she seemed destined to receive. Today, she’s arguably the best set-up 12 Metre in the world. Designed by Olin Stephens and David Pedrick at Sparkman & Stephens, and built of aluminium at the Minneford Yacht Yard, Enterprise boasted a number of firsts. She was the first design to be tank-tested on a large scale, with a handful of models measuring roughly 7m each, in tanks designed for the aerospace and military industries. Results from those tests suggested that over a typical 24-mile America’s Cup course in an average 10-knot wind, Enterprise would be a minute faster than her rivals. Enterprise was also the first yacht to pioneer laminate sails, using plastic films to stabilise the more conventional Dacron. Her sails included the ‘garbage bag’, a light airs genoa that (in colour, at least) suggested its moniker. Enterprise posted two race wins in the 2019 12 Metre World Championships. Photo: Ian Roman The 1977 Challenger matches were a rematch of the 1974 Courageous v Intrepid rivalry between upstart west coaster Lowell North and eastern establishment sailor Ted Hood. At North’s right hand was sailmaking wunderkind John Marshall, who would be a dominant presence in Cup competitions for years to come. Many of Enterprise ’s crew had cut their 12 Metre teeth on Intrepid ’s successful 1970 Cup defence. In fact, Intrepid was brought out of retirement and trucked to San Diego to spar with the new design. Yet it was Courageous , a 1974 design, that secured the spot to defend the Cup ( Courageous successfully saw off Alan Bond’s Australia in the Cup match). So what went wrong for Enterprise ? Anyone who knows the boat well won’t hesitate to respond. “ Enterprise had a foretriangle dimension that was about three feet shorter than what was conventional,” Marshall explained to me recently. Enterprise hull is now painted battleship grey – the original colour was white Most 12s have a 24ft foretriangle, give or take a bit. Enterprise ’s was 21ft. “Computer predictions that evaluated flow over surfaces suggested this would give us an edge,” Marshall recalled. But when it came to tacking, getting the stiff headsails quickly across was a challenge, as there was now 3ft more sail that had to pass around the front of the mast. “The jib didn’t fill quite as quickly, and we didn’t accelerate quite as quickly coming out of tacks,” Marshall adds. In the early challenger races, Enterprise performed well. But as the summer progressed, Courageous got distinctly better. “Once the difference got down to being pretty small, and the boats were always close together, tacking performance became much more important.” Consider that it wasn’t unheard of for 12 Metres to do over 50 tacks on a four-mile beat, and it’s clear why the writing was on the wall. After stints in the Med she had been donated to the US Merchant Marine Academy Sailing Foundation. With the impetus of the forthcoming 2019 Worlds in Newport, a major refit was begun in earnest. Tommy Rich, from New England Boatworks, which carried out the refit, recalls: “The boat had been bastardised. They had put a flush deck on it and a bogus interior, and it was basically in a state of disrepair.” The refit was done over roughly two years, and in that time virtually everything on the boat was upgraded or replaced, except the hull and framework. The hull structure is one of the few parts of the boat that remains original Rich explains: “S&S, along with David Pedrick, designed a new keel. The boat got a more modern spade rudder to replace the old, barn-door type, and a more modern deck. That included new cockpits and a spinnaker pole trough – basically all the working deck – as well as a new chainplate structure.” The boat received a new rig: an aluminium mast, as per the class rules, but with carbon used everywhere else, as well as all-new Harken hydraulics. And, of course, the ‘J’ foretriangle dimension is at 24ft once again. For this level of investment in time and money, there was just one goal: to win the World Championship. Enterprise was chartered by Clay Deutsch for the summer, but the race started even before she had hit the water. “The challenge for us has been the calendar,” says Deutsch. “We didn’t have the boat in a position to go sailing until the end of May. And it’s pretty humbling how long it takes to get these boats dialed in.” Double wheels: outer one for steering; inner one for trim tab control Nevertheless, her pedigree showed quickly. In her first competition in Newport this summer, Enterprise posted a pair of 1sts in the two final races. In the 2019 World Championship in Newport she finished a solid 2nd overall in the Modern Division to the more seasoned Challenge XII . For Deutsch, the 12 Metre seed was planted long ago. “When I was a kid, while other kids had baseball and football cards, I had an Intrepid scrapbook, and I have always fantasised about 12 Metres. Then, out of the blue this past winter, North Sails’ Mike Toppa came to me with, ‘What about Enterprise ?’ It was the furthest thing from my mind, and I just figured we wouldn’t be there.” But Deutsch was persuaded, and work shifted into a frenzied pitch at New England Boatworks. “I remember when I first looked at it, and it was in a million pieces, and I said: ‘I’m not a professional, but my amateur opinion is that this boat has no chance of being ready.’ Asymmetric foredeck hatches – the port hatch has a roller on the aft side for spinnaker take downs “But Ben Quatromoni, the project manager, and his team jumped on it, working around the clock, and we made it to the starting line.” Today Enterprise ’s decks today are remarkably spartan for a 12 Metre: it’s 1977 meets 2019 technology, with lots of carbon. “The boat setup is complicated,” says Quatromoni, “but it’s very user-friendly.” The port foredeck hatch has a roller on the aft side, TP52 -style, for the string take down spinnaker system. Once around the roller, the chute is pulled through a Dacron tube that runs to the stern. With the grinders working in unison, the sail disappears in five seconds. Control lines run through custom-made carbon ‘trumpets’, allowing them move effortlessly out of sight. Carbon reels take up the halyards. These are ratchet system reels, where one control line spins the reel, bringing the halyard in, and another control line releases it. Unlike those reels, the spinnaker take-down reel is powered off the pedestals. The spinnaker take down bag; the spinnaker comes down through the forward deck hatch and is pulled through this long Dacron bag The aluminium cockpit has been lowered to get the grinders down and allow the boom to just avoid grazing the deck when fully sheeted in. But the boom is low. “Man, is it crowded,” says Deutsch. “I can barely fit under the boom – when we’re tacking, I’m literally down on all fours.” The port and starboard jib trimmer pits have hydraulic controls for the jib tack and jib leads, which is standard for the Twelves. As on most 12 Metres, below decks is anything but simple. The 150ft of mainsheet runs from the traveller car up into the boom, forward to the gooseneck, below deck, then aft to a turning block where it goes up into the mainsheet pod. Rather than using a winch for the traveller, the car is controlled by a Harken magic wheel below decks, with a 17:1 purchase. With so many hydraulic systems, continual pumping is required to keep them pressurised, and the aft cockpit pedestal is set up to run a rotary pump, mounted below, for that purpose. For trimmers, there’s no downtime. Once they’ve finished trimming, it’s back to pumping to keep the hydraulics powered up. The workmanship on many of the systems is truly extraordinary. The turning blocks for the spinnaker sheet and guy are so inconspicuous as to be barely noticeable. The traveller control line looks as if it has been simply laid on deck. Enterprise ’s original white hull is now battleship grey. Coupled with black spars, the effect is stunning. UncategorizedDivers recover 5 bodies from wrecked superyacht off sicily; 1 still missing. PORTICELLO, Sicily (AP) — Divers searching the wreck of a superyacht that sank off Sicily found the bodies of five passengers Wednesday, leaving one still missing as questions intensified about why the vessel sank so quickly when a nearby sailboat remained largely unscathed. Rescue crews brought four body bags ashore at Porticello. Salvatore Cocina, head of the Sicily civil protection agency, said a fifth body had been located. Divers on-scene said they would try to recover it on Thursday while continuing the search for the sixth. The discovery made clear the operation to search the hull on the seabed 50 meters (164 feet) underwater had quickly turned into a recovery one, not a rescue, given the amount of time that had passed and with no signs of life over three days of searching. The Bayesian, a 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged yacht, went down in a storm early Monday as it was moored about a kilometer (a half-mile) offshore. Civil protection officials said they believed the ship was struck by a tornado over the water, known as a waterspout. Fifteen people escaped in a lifeboat and were rescued by a nearby sailboat. The body of the ship’s chef, Recaldo Thomas of Antigua, was recovered Monday. Thomas was born in Canada, according to his cousin David Isaac, but visited his parents’ homeland of Antigua as a child, and moved permanently to the tiny eastern Caribbean island in his early 20s. Italian officials previously listed Antigua and Canada as the nationality of people on board. The fate of six missing passengers had driven the search effort, including British tech magnate Mike Lynch , his 18-year-old daughter and associates who had successfully defended him in a recent U.S. federal fraud trial. Lynch’s spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment Wednesday. Meanwhile, Termini Imerese Public Prosecutor’s Office investigators were acquiring evidence for their criminal investigation, which they opened immediately after the tragedy despite no formal suspects having been publicly identified. Questions have abounded about what caused the superyacht, built in 2008 by Italian shipyard Perini Navi, to rapidly sink, when the nearby Sir Robert Baden Powell sailboat was largely spared and managed to rescue the survivors. Giovanni Costantino, head of The Italian Sea Group, which owns the ship maker, blamed human error for the disaster, which he said took 16 minutes. “The ship sank because it took on water. From where, the investigators will say,” he told RAI state television after he met with prosecutors. Costantino cited AIS ship tracking data which he said showed the Bayesian had taken on water for four minutes when a sudden gust of wind flipped it and it continued taking on water. The ship straightened up slightly and then went down, he said. But was it merely the case of a freak waterspout that knocked the ship to its side and allowed water to pour in through open hatches? What was the position of the keel, which on a large sailboat like the Bayesian might have been retractable to allow it to enter shallower ports? “There’s a lot of uncertainty as to whether it had a lifting keel and whether it might have been up,” said Jean-Baptiste Souppez, a fellow of the Royal Institute of Naval Architects and the editor of the Journal of Sailing Technology. “But if it had, then that would reduce the amount of stability that the vessel had, and therefore made it easier for it to roll over on its side,” he said in an interview. The captain of the sailboat that rescued survivors said his craft sustained minimal damage — the frame of a sun awning broke — even with winds that he estimated reached 12 on the Beaufort wind scale, which is the highest hurricane-strength force on the scale. He said he had remained anchored with his engines running to try to maintain the ship’s position as the forecast storm rolled in. “Another possibility is to heave anchor before the storm and to run downwind at open sea,” Karsten Borner said in a text message. But he said that might not have been possible for the Bayesian, given its trademark 75-meter (246-foot) tall mast. “If there was a stability problem, caused by the extremely tall mast, it would not have been better at open sea,” he said. Yachts like the Bayesian are required to have watertight, sub-compartments that are specifically designed to prevent a rapid, catastrophic sinking even when some parts fill with water. The underwater search continued in dangerous and time-consuming conditions. Because of the wreck’s depth, which requires special precautions, divers working in pairs could only spend about 12 minutes at a time searching, though reinforcements outfitted with special equipment to enable longer dives were on the wreck Wednesday. In all, some 27 divers took rotations, including four who helped with recovery after the 2012 Costa Concordia disaster off Tuscany. They called the Porticello wreck a “little Concordia,” fire crews said in a statement. The limited dive time was aimed in part at avoiding decompression sickness, also known as the “bends,” which can occur when divers stay underwater for long periods and ascend too quickly, allowing nitrogen gas dissolved in the blood to form bubbles. “The longer you stay, the slower your ascent has to be,” said Simon Rogerson, the editor of SCUBA magazine. He said the tight turnaround time suggested the operation’s managers were trying to limit the risks and recovery time after each dive. “It sounds like they’re operating essentially on no decompression or very tight decompression, or they’re being extremely conservative,” he said. Divers were also working with debris floating around them, limited visibility and air tanks on their backs. “We are trying to advance in tight spaces, but any single thing slows us down,” said Luca Cari, spokesman for the fire rescue service. “An electric panel could set us back for five hours. These aren’t normal conditions. We’re at the limit of possibility.” Winfield reported from Rome and Kirka from London. Associated Press journalists Trisha Thomas in Rome; Andrea Rosa in Porticello; and Anika Kentish in St. John’s, Antigua, contributed to this report. This story has been corrected to reflect that Thomas was born in Canada, not Antigua. For the first time in more than eight years, Huntington Beach voters will seat a new city clerk when the general election is held in November. Current City Clerk Robin Estanislau is retiring, and two candidates — Regina Blankenhorn and Lisa Lane Barnes — are vying for a four-year term. The first couple of weeks of the campaign have already proven contentious. Barnes hired an attorney to challenge Blankenhorn’s ballot designation of “city executive coordinator.” Her team argued that this was misleading, since Blankenhorn held that position in the city of Tustin — not in Huntington Beach. “The ballot designation is very important, and when you use the word ‘city’ … it implies that you work in that city,” Barnes said. “Your ballot designation cannot be misleading, and that is misleading.” The issue did not require litigation. On Monday, Estanislau agreed to reject Blankenhorn’s initial ballot designation and change it to her second alternative “municipal executive coordinator.” Blankenhorn said she respected the decision. “Executive coordinator is my job title, and I work for a city,” she said. “I thought it made sense. They said it was misleading, that people would think I was appointed to something or that I worked in Huntington Beach. I was like, everyone Googled me already and found out I worked for Tustin.” For the record, Barnes’ ballot designation lists her as “businesswoman/Huntington Beach commissioner.” Blankenhorn has been an executive coordinator for Tustin for 11 years, providing support to its city manager and city council in their dealings with the public and outside agencies, including media, while ensuring that policies and procedures are adhered to by the council. A 25-year resident of Huntington Beach, she was previously an instructor in the Coastline Regional Occupational Program. She’s currently the chairperson for the Enterprise Corp. for the Coast Community College District, a for-profit corporation that operates the swap meets at Orange Coast and Golden West colleges. Blankenhorn, who said she was listed as No Party Preference for years before recently registering as a Democrat, believes her experience in municipal government sets her apart. “I want to make sure that a person who’s in there is experienced, because that person is going to be a department head and they’re going to have to lead that department and staff,” she said. “It’s not just a matter of conducting city council meetings. The city clerk is the elections official, and they’re also the records keeper.” Among Blankenhorn’s endorsements are the city clerk of Laguna Beach, Ann Marie McKay. Blankenhorn said that when she found out that Barnes was the only one running at the time, she decided to throw her hat in the ring. “I didn’t know her name,” Blankenhorn said. “I just knew someone was running that was a Realtor in town and had absolutely no municipal government experience. I thought that was wrong. As a resident myself, I would not want to have an inexperienced person in that position. So that’s why I decided to run.” Barnes countered that she directly serves the City Council in her current role as a Community and Library Services Commissioner , a position to which she was appointed by Councilman Tony Strickland in 2022. Her background is is business. She said she previously worked for a global chemical manufacturing company before settling in as a local real estate agent two years ago. “It’s always been one of my goals to be deeply involved with my community,” said Barnes, who has lived in Huntington Beach for a dozen years. “When I was working corporately, I did a lot of travel, and that really prohibited spending as much time as I would like to within our community. When that changed and I became a Realtor, it was a great opportunity for me to really anchor myself in the city and just become involved.” She sees becoming the city clerk as an extension of that. As to Blankenhorn’s contention that she is unqualified, she noted that she’s proud to be on a commission that advises the City Council on what to do with Huntington Beach’s 78 parks, five libraries and one golf course. Barnes said she has conservative values. She has endorsements from the Republican Party of Orange County, Mayor Gracey Van Der Mark, Mayor Pro Tem Pat Burns, City Atty. Michael Gates and state Sen. Janet Nguyen, whose District 36 includes Huntington Beach. “I’m embedded in the fabric of this community,” Barnes said. “I’ve never met [Blankenhorn], I’ve never seen her at a City Council meeting. I’ve never seen her at a city event in Huntington Beach, because she’s in Tustin.” As the conductor of municipal elections, the city clerk could see increased importance in Surf City in future years. In March, Huntington Beach voters approved Measure A , which means the city could require voter identification, provide more in-person voting locations and monitor ballot drop-boxes starting in 2026. Weeks later, California Atty. General Rob Bonta and Secretary of State Shirley Weber filed a lawsuit in Orange County Superior Court , arguing that Measure A was illegal and preempted by state law. Blankenhorn said she’d be ready to go on day one if elected. “When I don’t know something, I’m going to have my staff to help me, guide me and direct me,” she said. “And I’ll have other city clerks that I can turn to. I know city clerks.” Barnes also believes she is qualified, adding that the livelihood and well-being of the community were important to her. “When I became involved, I loved it,” she said. “I absolutely loved it, and I wanted to do more for our community … I believe I am the best candidate.” All the latest on Orange County from Orange County. The Enterprise dinghy was designed in 1955 for the News Chronicle. This national newspaper wanted to encourage the public to get sailing and sponsored Jack Holt to design a new class of boat that would not only be cheap, but also easy to own and use. The Enterprise was the result, and it launched to huge publicity after a ground-breaking sea-trial, sailing at night across the Channel in January 1956. Now 60 years later over 24,000 boats have been registered worldwide and it remains a popular and affordable dinghy which is instantly recognisable by its light blue sails. Many national, world and Olympic champion sailors have raced Enterprises and the class continues to grow through a wide choice of affordable new and second-hand boats for racing and cruising activities.

British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, 59, was confirmed dead by local authorities on Thursday after the yacht he was holidaying on sunk in the early hours of Monday. Family release statement; superyacht sinking latest Divers recovered the final missing body from the wreckage on Friday , which is believed to be that of his 18-year-old daughter Hannah. Her mother and Mr Lynch's wife Angela Bacares survived the disaster. 'She is my little angel, my star' Miss Lynch's sister, Esme, said in a statement on Friday: "Hannah often burst into my bedroom and lay down with me. "Sometimes beaming with a smile, sometimes cheeky, sometimes for advice. "No matter what, she brought boundless love to me. She was endlessly caring, passionately mad, unintentionally hilarious and the most amazing, supportive and joyful sister and best friend to me. "And on top of all this, she had even more love to give endlessly to all her friends and passion to give to her incredible studies and goals. She is my little angel, my star." A spokesperson for the family said in a statement on Friday: "The Lynch family is devastated, in shock and is being comforted and supported by family and friends. "Their thoughts are with everyone affected by the tragedy. They would like to sincerely thank the Italian coastguard, emergency services and all those who helped in the rescue. Their one request now is that their privacy be respected at this time of unspeakable grief." Tributes have since poured in for both members of the family. 'Lit up the classroom' Miss Lynch "lit up the classroom with her energy, passion for learning and sheer intelligence", Jon Mitropoulos-Monk, head of English at Latymer Upper School in west London, said. "I've never taught someone who combined sky-high intellectual ability with warmth and enthusiasm in the way Hannah did," he said on Friday. He added that when she was awarded her place to study at Oxford she sought out every member of staff to "thank them individually and give them a hug". Family friend Patrick Jacob said he has "never met anybody like Hannah", describing her as "charming and ferociously intelligent with an insatiable thirst for life and knowledge". "We have lost one of our brightest stars whose future held so much promise. Her loss is unbearable," he added. Miss Lynch's school friend Katya Lacie said she had a "beautiful soul". "Being with Hannah made me feel whole and happy. She is the most special friend anyone could ask for and I will always love Hannah," she said. Andrew Kanter, a close friend and former colleague of her father, described Mr Lynch as "the most brilliant mind and caring person I have ever known". "There is simply no other UK technology entrepreneur of our generation who has had such an impact on so many people," he said. Sushovan Hussain, a school friend and former colleague of Mr Lynch, also knew Morgan Stanley chairman Jonathan Bloom, his wife Judy, and Mr Lynch's lawyer Chris Morvillo, who also died when the yacht sunk. He said Mr Lynch's death "leaves an unfillable hole in my life", adding it is "tragic beyond words". 'A heart as big as his brain' Family friend Albert Read said he "never met anyone like Mike". Mr Read described him as "a searing intellect, a steel that would transform the world around him, an instinct for family and friends - organising children's treasure hunts, big gatherings of neighbours in Suffolk - and, with Angela, a determination to light up the worlds of art and science for his two beloved daughters. "Warm, funny, brilliant, loyal and exceptionally brave, with a heart as big as his brain." 'Fantastic neighbour' Ruth Leigh lived next door to Mr Lynch in Suffolk for 15 years. On Thursday, she described them as "fantastic neighbours" and said the tech tycoon "never played on his position" and was "very friendly and down-to-earth" despite his fortune. "Even though they were wealthy and influential people there was never any airs and graces," Ms Leigh told Sky News. "He always went to the trouble of remembering your name, of asking after your partner or your children. From the very start they were fantastic neighbours - very friendly and down-to-earth. "He'd come from a very ordinary background and through his own brains and intellect, he'd made a really great company and come up with some incredible ground-breaking tech. He was always very moral. He gave to charity very generously and never played on his position." She described his death so soon after the end of his legal troubles as "the saddest thing I've ever heard". "The whole point about this trip to Italy was taking his friends and family to say thank you. That's what makes it even more tragic," she added. "Losing somebody so kind, compassionate, and full of integrity must leave a hole that cannot be filled." Read more Who were the people on the yacht? What we know about the sinking so far Doctor reveals how British mother and baby survived Mr Lynch was extradited to the US and spent a year under house arrest in San Francisco before he was cleared of 15 charges of fraud earlier this summer by a jury. Prosecutors claimed he deliberately overstated the value of Autonomy, the company he founded in 1996, when he sold it to Hewlett Packard in 2011. He always denied wrongdoing. 'Brain the size of a planet' His former colleague told Sky News on Thursday he had a "brain the size of a planet" and was a "lovely man". David Tabizel co-founded Autonomy with Mr Lynch and the pair remained good friends. He described him as a "remarkable individual" and the "brightest man I've met in my life". "He had a remarkable set of personality traits that we rarely see in Britain," he said. "Before him there was no British tech scene. He showed us we can be world-class." Mr Tabizel told of Mr Lynch's "inner child", that he "loved video games", had a life-size train set in his garden, and how they animated a cartoon dog for their office, for which they both recorded the "barking noises". Commenting on his legal struggles, Mr Tabizel said he "never heard him lie or exaggerate" and he was "interested in the truth... in cutting through the noise". "For him to be accused of manipulating his profits. It was an extraordinary thing. It just wasn't Mike. I loved that man and he should be celebrated as a hero." David Yelland, Mr Lynch's former PR adviser and former editor of The Sun newspaper, paid tribute to him in a post on X. He said: "All those that knew and loved Mike are thinking of Angela and their surviving daughter Esme as they struggle to come to terms with such unimaginable loss. "We have lost a man who was failed in life by his country and his peers when he needed them most - as he looked for help in the unjust US demand that he be extradited - and he has then suffered the most unfair and brutal of fates." Mr Yelland said he had spoken to Mr Lynch just before he set sail on the yacht. He also described him as a "dreamer of dreams not just for himself but for all those that knew him, worked with him or invested with him". The entrepreneur had "exciting plans to contribute much more to the country he loved," he added. Lord Browne, former chief executive of BP and now chairman of BeyondNetZero, said Mr Lynch was "the person who catalysed a breed of deep tech entrepreneurs in the UK". "His ideas and his personal vision were a powerful contribution to science and technology in both Britain and globally. We have lost a human being of great ability," he wrote. 'Privileged to have known him' Sky's Ian King said he "feels very privileged to have known and spoken with Mike Lynch over many years". He described him as a "visionary and original thinker with a passion for building businesses". "There are sadly too few like him in the UK," he added. Read more: Ian King: Why the odds were stacked against Lynch The Royal Academy of Engineering, where Mr Lynch was a former council member, donor, and mentor, said it is "deeply saddened to learn of the death of Mike Lynch". Sending condolences to his family, they added: "Mike became a fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2008 and we have fond memories of the active role he played in the past as a mentor, donor, and former council member. He was also one of the inaugural members on the enterprise committee." A spokesperson for technology industry group TechUK said: "Mike Lynch was a hugely significant and pioneering figure in the UK technology sector. "Our hearts go out to all of the families and friends who have been impacted by these tragic events," they said. Mr Lynch's Autonomy software was based on Bayesian statistical inference - where his family's ill-fated yacht got its name. The software's global success earned him a reputation as the "British Bill Gates" and enabled companies to trawl through huge swathes of data more efficiently. His Cambridge thesis is thought to be one of the most-read pieces of research in the institution's library. There was huge outcry from politicians and business leaders when Home Secretary Priti Patel approved a judge's extradition order for him to be sent to the US for trial in 2023. Related Topics
British tech mogul Lynch’s body found in luxury yacht wreckageFifteen of the 22 people aboard, including a mother who was reported holding her one-year-old baby over the waves to save her, were rescued by sailboat sir robert baden powell.. The Italian coast guard on Thursday said that the body of British tech magnate Mike Lynch, 59, was among those recovered off the coast of Sicily from the wreckage of a superyacht whose builders had called it “unsinkable”. One woman remains missing. She has not been identified, but Hannah, Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter, is reportedly unaccounted for. The family was celebrating Lynch’s recent acquittal on fraud charges with the people who defended him at trial in the US. All passengers were his guests. Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, was among the people rescued. The Bayesian — a 56-metre (185 feet) British-flagged sailing boat — was anchored some 700 metres off Porticello, near Palermo on the north of the Italian island. It was then struck by a waterspout — akin to a mini-tornado, and sank within minutes on Monday. Fifteen of the 22 people aboard, including a mother who was reported holding her one-year-old baby over the waves to save her, were rescued by sailboat Sir Robert Baden Powell . Termini Imerese public prosecutor’s office investigators were collecting evidence for a criminal investigation, which they opened immediately after the tragedy despite no formal suspects having been publicly identified. According to the New York Times, the yacht was anchored on a stretch of water favoured by the Phoenicians thousands of years ago for its protection from the mistral wind and, in more recent times, by the yachts of tech billionaires. The chief executive of The Italian Sea Group, which owns the Bayesian ’s manufacturer, said superyachts like these are “the safest in the most absolute sense”. “First of all, because they have very little surface compared to a yacht facing into the wind,” CEO Giovanni Costantino told Sky News on Wednesday. “Second, with the structure, the drift keel, they become unsinkable bodies.” Investigators are now looking at why the Bayesian, built in 2008 by Italian shipyard Perini Navi, sank while the Sir Robert Baden Powell remained largely unscathed. The sailboat’s captain, Karsten Borner, said his craft sustained minimal damage — the frame of a sun awning broke — even with winds that he estimated had reached 12 on the Beaufort wind scale, which is the highest hurricane-strength force on the scale. He said he remained anchored with his engines running to try to maintain the ship’s position as the forecast storm rolled in. “Another possibility is to heave anchor before the storm and to run downwind at open sea,” Borner told AFP. But he said that might not have been possible for the Bayesian , given its 75-meter (246-foot) tall mast. “If there was a stability problem, caused by the extremely tall mast, it would not have been better at open sea,” he said. Yachts like the Bayesian are required to have watertight compartments that are specifically designed to prevent a rapid, catastrophic sinking even when some parts fill with water. Lynch is the only person confirmed dead; the other bodies have not been formally identified. “Everything that was done reveals a very long summation of errors,” said Costantino, adding that bad weather was forecast and all the passengers should have been gathered at the assembly point, all the doors and hatches closed. Security camera footage of the ship from the shore showed the lights on its mast going out, which Costantino said indicated a short circuit, meaning that the ship had already taken on water. “It is good practice when the ship is at anchor to have a guard on the bridge, and if there was one he could not have failed to see the storm coming. Instead it took on water with the guests still in the cabin... They ended up in a trap, those poor people ended up like mice,” he added. Lynch’s death happened less than a week after his co-defendant, business partner, and former Autonomy executive Stephen Chamberlain, died after being hit by a car on Saturday in England. Both Lynch and Chamberlain were acquitted of fraud charges in the US by a San Franciscio court in June after a decade-long legal battle with US firm Hewlett-Packard (HP). Lynch was once dubbed Britain’s “Bill Gates”, indicating the enormity of his business empire. However, the fraud allegations tarnished his image as a UK tech success story. Since returning home, Lynch — an advisor to two British prime ministers — had criticised the government for allowing his extradition to the US in the first place. Lynch and his wife, who also had an older daughter aged 21, had a combined fortune of £500 million ($648 million) according to the latest Sunday Times “Rich List”. He owed much of that wealth to his software firm Autonomy, which he founded in 1996 in Cambridge and turned into a leading British tech company. Autonomy’s search software was informed by Bayesian learning frameworks, inspiring the name of the ill-fated yacht. Lynch sold Autonomy to HP for $11 billion in 2011 in a mega deal that raised eyebrows at the time. Just one year later, HP reported a write-down of $8.8 billion — including more than $5 billion it attributed to alleged inflated data from Autonomy —plunging Lynch into the fraud case he spent over a decade fighting. The US prosecutors accused him of taking part in a massive scheme as Autonomy’s chief executive to deceive HP by pumping the value of the company. Lynch was extradited last year and spent a year under house arrest before being cleared. He could have faced two decades in jail, an ordeal the entrepreneur said he would not have survived due to various medical conditions. Lynch, who made around $815 million from the Autonomy sale, always denied the fraud charges, accusing HP of making him a “scapegoat” for its own failings. He was honoured by Queen Elizabeth II in 2006 with an Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his services to enterprise and appointed to the board of the BBC the same year. After the Autonomy sale, he founded venture capital firm Invoke Capital, which was an early investor in cyber security firm Darktrace. However, despite the US acquittal this year, the legal saga was not over for Lynch. In 2022, London’s high court ruled in a civil fraud case that HP had been duped and had overpaid for Autonomy. The court has yet to rule on the billions of dollars in damages claimed by the US group. David Yelland, a reputation management advisor who described Lynch as a client and friend, said in an X post it was “devastating” to think he had lost his life just as he had began to rebuild it. “His entire life is one of beating the odds in the most extraordinary of situations,” Yelland said.
