Elysium: On board the Sunseeker 131 transformed into a personal paradise

Carefully detailed customisation transformed a Sunseeker 131 into an owner’s exclusive slice of heaven, finds Sam Fortescue...

“If you find yourself alone, riding in green fields with the sun on your face, do not be troubled. For you are in Elysium, and you’re already dead,” says Russell Crowe’s Maximus in the 2000 blockbuster Gladiator . And so ran the thinking of Ron Gibbs when he named his Sunseeker 131 Elysium , after the Ancient Greek concept of a heavenly paradise.

And like any decent depiction of heaven, Elysium is heavily influenced by the mind of its beholder. Gibbs took Sunseeker at its word when it said its Bespoke programme offered “a clean canvas” for yachts of more than 30 metres – with the result Elysium is comfortably the most customised of all the 14 Sunseeker 131s delivered to date. An experienced owner, with four Sunseekers from 15 metres to 35 metres already behind him, Gibbs was clear from the start on the features he wanted to personalise. “I wrote the spec before I ordered the boat,” he says. “That way, the yard has everything up front and it minimises costly change orders.”

His list of custom features was long and detailed, with a first draft extending to 120 pages. And it drilled down as far as details such as not using push-in power sockets behind the bridge console – he’s had problems in the past with plugs rattling loose, requiring major surgery to access. “Why would you use a push-in fitting on a boat that is subject to vibration and movement?” he says. By the end of the build, they were on version 11 of the document.

Many of the changes boil down to just two things: Gibbs’s love of taking the wheel himself and his preference for a big tender . “I like driving the boat myself and I like being in the open air. I didn’t want to be in the same situation as with the Sunseeker 115, where you have to run between the sundeck and the bridge.” He specced a fully functional helm station up under the hardtop with an unparalleled view ahead. Literally every function on the bridge is replicated up here, from chartplotters to FLIR night-vision cameras and even the Bridge Navigational Watch Alarm System that spots when the helmsman has nodded off – a requirement of coding.

To complete his eyrie up in the fresh air, Gibbs wanted to put a new companionway in to connect the main bridge and the sundeck helm. This, in turn, meant extending the large fibreglass hardtop, to protect the stairs. “On the 115, you got drips from the hardtop going down the companionway. Every morning, the guys would be out with sponges and a chamois to clean it up, then 15 minutes later the water would be back. Sunseeker made me a whole new mould for the hardtop and there was no extra charge for that. They could not have been more helpful.” It now appears as an option for the 131.

The bigger roof needs a couple of stainless steel pillars to support its leading edge, and that has meant reconfiguring the forward sundeck area as well – all knock-on consequences. The spa pool that would usually sit here has been moved back behind the bar area. In its place, the sunpads have been extended to provide cover for raising the deck beneath, increasing headroom in the gym.

To finish the job, he had a custom mast put in forward with a bit of extra height that puts the yacht’s steaming light out of sightlines above the edge of the hardtop. “Otherwise you’re blinded by it for night sailing,” he says. Also, the elegant sweep of the bar up here has also been enlarged to make it a really convivial space for pre-dinner drinks.

It’s November and, even here in Italy’s San Remo, there’s a chill in the air. But it doesn’t take much effort to picture the sundeck as the nerve centre of the boat. It is with a wistful last look around that I take Gibbs’s new companionway down to the atrium on the bridge deck below. It’s a functional space – attractive enough – but this rather belies the effort it took to design. “There was a lot of work in the lobby,” Gibbs recalls. “We had to move the air conditioning and technical cupboards. I think we were all worried about that, but I’m astounded with the end result.”

On the standard 131 layout, stairs come up from the main deck to give access to the bridge, the skipper’s cabin to starboard and a pantry and dayhead to port. They also lead to a large saloon aft with sofas and a bar. This page of the general arrangement has been torn to shreds. The stairs have been rerouted and the cabin turned into a gym housing bikes and cross-trainers. Meeting Gibbs, all six-foot-plus of him, it is suddenly clear why the deckhead above had to be raised.

The pantry is now a bathroom, but the most impressive change concerns the saloon, which has been transformed into the owner’s cabin with an emperor-sized bed, floor-to-ceiling windows and even a walk-through wardrobe. Interestingly, it is smaller than the designated owner’s cabin forward on the deck below, but it is a really clever move from an experienced owner. “If you’re going to do overnight cruises, do not put your master cabin in the bow,” says Gibbs. “In my configuration, it is so stable and so quiet. You also have your own private deck behind you. In the morning it’s great, too: into the gym, then straight to the shower, change…”

Despite these layout tweaks, the project manager at Sunseeker, Mark Chinery, points out that much of it is just skin deep. “Although Elysium does have some bespoke elements, the core of the yacht, layout of systems and engineering and structural bulkhead positions remain faithful to the original 131 design. Without this element of control, we would not be able to deliver four 131 yachts per year.”

Gibbs’s view is that you only need one interior lounging area since you spend most of the time outside. There may be another strand to his thinking, though. Uniquely, Elysium is run without cooking on board. Oh, it’s got a galley (complete with two ovens, a microwave, four fridges and two freezers) – you wouldn’t build a 40 metre yacht without one unless you had no thought for its resale value. But Gibbs organises life on board so that hot meals are always taken ashore – for crew and guests alike. The galley is just used for preparing occasional snacks, breakfasts, sandwiches and so on.

“Trying to get cooking smells out of a boat with curtains is very difficult. It ages a boat very quickly,” he says. “Then there’s the time it takes to get food on board and waste off. And however good your chef is, after two weeks on board, you become pretty bored with what they do.” It is too comprehensive an argument not to have been well rehearsed with other sceptics. The point is that it works for Gibbs and his family.

I open one of the ovens to confirm that the crew doesn’t occasionally sneak a cheese toastie past the boss, but it contains only the original instructions, still in plastic. “Ask most of my family what the dishwasher’s for, and they’ll say ‘To store the crisps.’” This strategy also has the benefit of freeing up the neighbouring dumb waiter area for use as a laundry room. The other big area of change is around the transom, where skipper Chris Averis leads me next. A small 4.3-metre Ribeye tender lies lengthwise on chocks in the garage, alongside two Sea-Doo personal watercraft, Seabobs, inflatable kayaks and two inflatable Nautibuoy platforms. In short: lots of toys, but not a boat capable of getting guests from the boat to dinner ashore dry and unruffled.

That’s because Gibbs had the transom of the boat re-engineered to accommodate the largest tender possible – a 6.8-metre Ribeye with a 200hp engine – out on the bathing platform, rather than under cover. “Garages are always too small even on 40-metre to 50-metre yachts – plus there’s the height restriction for deep-V hulls,” he explains. “I like to get the biggest tender possible into the water – we lower it down on a full-beam hydraulic platform. You need a decent tender to get people aboard in rough seas.” Sunseeker once again had to build a new mould and beef up the structural members of the transom to support it. “We had to redesign the bathing platform so it would take the full beam,” says Gibbs. “This required a whole new mechanism.”

The skipper estimates that he can have the tender deployed in 90 seconds. “Plus we gain an entire extra RIB.” He admits that when entering a busy port, they may choose to first remove the tender before jostling into a berth. And using a bigger tender means they had to beef up certain stanchions to support the weight of a boarding ladder. The extra weight could have been a problem, but in fact it is very nicely offset by an extra tonne and a half of chain and anchor at the bow. “She balances up nicely on her lines,” Gibbs says.

This leaves the bow free of the rescue tender and davit that it would otherwise house, and this extra real estate has been put to good use. Gibbs has planted a plunge pool module here, with sunbeds and half a dozen big speakers. In the event of a sale, it can just as easily be returned to its standard use for storing a rescue boat in order to meet classification rules. “There were a lot of the standard ‘hidden’ components installed, such as crane sockets, wiring, plumbing and deck plates to make retrofit a lot easier,” says Chinery.

There are steps down to the bow, where the vast Lewmar capstans gleam like sculptures. In one of Gibbs’s final tweaks, the tip of the bow has been filled in and upholstered, with a lug for rigging a parasol. “This is one of my favourite places,” he says. “Sitting on the edge of the foredeck, out of the wind.” Here, then, is the man’s true Elysium – his paradise within a paradise.

More... and bigger

Quite early in our conversation over lunch, Elysium owner Ron Gibbs casually mentions that he’s negotiating over three new 50-metre yachts. We were here to discuss how much of his own vision he’d poured into the Sunseeker 131, so I’m surprised, to put it mildly, to hear that he’s already thinking about the next project. “I’m looking at hull No 2 of the Sunseeker 161 , being built by Icon ,” he explains. “Also a 52-metre Heesen and a custom Mercedes yacht.” The Sunseeker he likes because the yard already knows how he thinks, making the build process less fraught. The Heesen speaks for itself, and the Mercedes would be a custom project with Gibbs’s own Silver Arrows Marine business, which builds the striking 14-metre Arrow 460 to Mercedes-Benz styling. Elysium is on the market with Burgess for just shy of £18 million, although Gibbs intends to sail her intensively over the next few years, unless a good offer comes in. And why does he want a bigger boat? Well, I get a sense that he really enjoys the design experience, hard work as it is. But he explains it differently. “I’d get a slightly larger tender and a pool on the bow with jets to swim against,” he says. “Then I wouldn’t need to go off the boat any more.”

John W Henry, Liverpool's majority shareholder, apparently left people in Aberdeen in shock after arriving in the city over the weekend.

As reported by the The Press and Journal , Elysian, a 66-metre-long-yacht owned by the American billionaire docked in Aberdeen Harbour around 2.30pm on Saturday, although it's not clear as to how long it remained in the city.

Nevertheless, Elysian is a £66 million yacht built in Germany by Bremen-based company Lurssen Yachts and Henry acquired it in 2016 from Russian entrepreneur Georgy Bedzhamov after he became wanted on fraud charges in Russia.

Furthermore, at 66 metres long and 12 metres wide, containing an outdoor swimming pool, a spa centre, a gym and a helipad among its features, the luxury yacht ranks among the top five per cent of the world’s largest yachts, according to B oat International .

How smart contracts revolutionize superyacht ownership.

elysian superyacht owner

In the world of high-end and exclusive things, superyacht ownership has always been a symbol of wealth and status. However, this coveted status quo is on the verge of a major transformation, thanks to the groundbreaking technology of smart contracts.

These digital agreements, fueled by blockchain technology, harbor the potential to overhaul superyacht ownership, rendering it more efficient, transparent, and secure than ever before. What advantages can you, as a superyacht owner, glean from this revolution? Let's delve deeper into this!

The Challenge

Maintenance schedules and tracking the distance traveled are crucial aspects of yacht management. They affect safety, the longevity of the vessel, and the overall cost of ownership. Traditional record-keeping methods, often reliant on manual entries and paperwork, are prone to errors and can be tampered with, making it challenging to ensure accuracy and accountability. This lack of transparency can result in disputes between yacht owners, charter companies, and maintenance service providers, potentially leading to financial losses and damage to the reputation of the industry.

The Solution: Smart Contracts

Smart contracts, powered by blockchain technology, offer an innovative solution to the transparency and accountability challenges in the yachting industry. These self-executing contracts are designed to automatically enforce and record agreements when specific conditions are met. What can smart contracts do in yachting?

Smart Contracts Automate Administrative Tasks

elysian superyacht owner

The sheer complexity of superyacht ownership often entails a multitude of administrative tasks. Thus, smart contracts are the key to liberating superyacht owners from the drudgery of paperwork and time-consuming chores.

Maintenance Scheduling:

Smart contracts can be used to create and maintain digital records of maintenance schedules. These contracts can set predefined maintenance tasks, schedules, and budgets. When the time for maintenance comes, the smart contract triggers an automatic notification to the relevant parties. Payments for maintenance services can also be automated, ensuring that the agreed-upon tasks are completed before funds are released. This reduces the risk of neglecting essential maintenance and disputes related to service quality.

Distance Tracking

Yacht owners can struggle to accurately track the distance a yacht has traveled over time, which is essential for maintenance, fuel consumption, and charter agreements. Smart contracts can integrate with GPS and tracking systems, automatically recording and verifying the distance traveled. This data is stored in a secure and immutable blockchain ledger, providing an indisputable record of the yacht's journey history.

Smart Contracts Enhance Transparency

Transparency is a cornerstone of trust in any business venture, and superyacht ownership is no exception. The transparency offered by smart contracts is achieved by maintaining an incorruptible, tamper-proof ledger of all interactions and transactions related to the yacht.

The blockchain technology underpinning smart contracts acts as a guardian of truth, making every operation involving the yacht accountable and visible to all parties. This transparency reduces the likelihood of disputes, discrepancies, and fraud. It ensures that all stakeholders can have complete confidence in the fairness and integrity of the superyacht ownership process.

Smart Contracts Bolster Security

elysian superyacht owner

The security of data and assets in superyacht ownership is of paramount importance. Smart contracts leverage the robust security features of blockchain technology to safeguard sensitive information and protect against unauthorized access.

All financial information, maintenance records, and crew certifications can be stored within smart contracts, ensuring the utmost privacy and security. The decentralized nature of blockchain technology makes it nearly impervious to cyberattacks, offering peace of mind to superyacht owners.

The winds of change are blowing through the world of superyacht ownership, and smart contracts are leading the way. All about the $40m bayesian yacht that capsized, leaving 6 dead and 1 still missing.

The massive superyacht Bayesian that sank off the coast of Italy on Monday won numerous awards for its sleek interior design — and was sold to its original owner for nearly $40 million.

The luxury sailing ship was carrying 22 people when it capsized and sank during a fierce storm early Monday.

A handout picture, provided by Perini Navi Press Office, shows the ''Bayesian'', the 56-metre sailing unit sunk in a violent storm off Palermo, Italy, 19 August 2024

The bodies of five of six missing passengers, including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch , 69, have been recovered. His daughter, 18-year-old Hannah, is the only one of six known killed in the tragedy yet to be found, a source close to the rescue operation told Reuters.

The ship’s chef, Recaldo Thomas, has also been confirmed dead.

Divers continued searching the wreckage of the 184-foot-long, British-flagged vessel, previously called Salute, on Wednesday after discovering four of the bodies.

When it was built in 2008, the Bayesian had the tallest aluminum mast in the world, standing at 237 feet, earning it the award for best exterior styling at the World Superyacht Awards in 2009, the Telegraph reported.

The sprawling superyacht’s interior, decorated with sleek, minimalist furnishings created by Remi Tessier, has also won numerous awards.

The ship, which accommodated 12 guests, had a master bedroom and three double and two twin bedrooms.

It also featured beige sofas, dark wood furnishings, and a teak deck equipped with a large canvas awning to keep guests cool, according to the outlet.

Some of the ship’s styling, including thin brown pillars and miniature terra cotta sculptures, was inspired by Japanese culture.

What to know after a tornado sank the yacht Bayesian off the coast of Sicily:

  • A superyacht capsized off the coast of Sicily after a tornado hit the area early Monday, killing seven passengers.
  • British tech tycoon Mike Lynch was identified as one of the bodies pulled from the wreckage. His teenage daughter, Hannah, was the final one to be recovered.
  • Lynch — known as “Britain’s Bill Gates” — had invited guests from Clifford Chance, a legal firm that represented him, and Invoke Capital, his own company, on the voyage,  according to the Telegraph .
  • Security camera footage shot from 650 feet from where the  Bayesian sank Monday  shows it disappearing.
  • A rare and unexpected “black swan” weather event may have led to the  Bayesian’s speedy demise , maritime experts say.

The extravagant ship won best interior at the International Superyacht Society Awards in 2008 and was also voted one of the best large sailing yachts at the 2009 World Superyacht Awards, according to the outlet.

The yacht’s original owner, John Groenewoud, a Dutch real estate developer, reportedly bought the ship for £30 million ($39 million) when it was built. In 2014, he sold the ship with an asking price of £27 million ($35 million).

The Bayesian is currently owned by Revtom, a company that listed Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, as its legal owner.

It was named after the Bayesian statistical model that helps financial investors calculate risk — the subject of Lynch’s PhD that later helped him build his empire.

The vessel, operated by yachting company Camper & Nicholsons, had twin 965hp MTU engines, which gave it a range of 3,600 nautical miles at 13 to 15 knots (14 to 17 mph).

An ambulance carries the body of a person which was found at the scene where the luxury yacht sank.

RSB Rigging carried out rig service works on the ship with Astilleros de Mallorca, a shipyard facility in Palma, in November 2016.

The Bayesian returned in September 2020 for scheduled service works, including having its mast removed and reinstalled.

Steve Branagh, managing director of RSB Rigging, told the Telegraph: “At this time, our deepest sympathies go out to the friends and families of all those affected by this dreadful tragedy.”

Vessels like Mike Lynch's stricken superyacht are "unsinkable", according to the chief executive of the firm which makes and sells them.

Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, told Sky News there are no flaws with the design and construction of the Bayesian superyacht which capsized in a storm off the coast of Porticello, Sicily, on Monday.

Five bodies were found by divers on Wednesday - taking the number of confirmed dead to six.

The Italian Sea Group also owns the firm that built British tech tycoon Mr Lynch's Bayesian, and Mr Costantino said the vessels "are the safest in the most absolute sense".

News of the sinking left CEO of The Italian Sea Group Giovanni Costantino in ‘sadness on the one hand and disbelief on the other’.

"Being the manufacturer of Perini [boats], I know very well how the boats have always been designed and built," he said.

"And as Perini is a sailing ship... sailing ships are renowned to be the safest ever."

He said their structure and keel made them "unsinkable bodies".

Mr Costantino said news of the sinking "put me in a state of sadness on one side and of disbelief on the other".

"This incident sounds like an unbelievable story, both technically and as a fact," he said.

It is understood Italian prosecutors investigating the incident are continuing to hold interviews with the survivors.

On Tuesday they questioned the captain for more than two hours to help reconstruct what happened and provide useful technical details.

Four British inspectors are also in Porticello and have begun a preliminary assessment of events.

It is understood they will look at all relevant aspects of the incident, including the design, stability, and operation of the vessel. They will also examine the effects of the weather conditions experienced.

Twenty-two people were on board the vessel, 15 of whom were rescued - including Briton Charlotte Golunski and her one-year-old daughter Sofia.

Divers will resume efforts on Thursday morning to bring ashore a body they found earlier. One more person remains missing.

Yacht with 1,000 rounds of ammunition and fireworks burns in Marina del Rey

An investigation is underway at the scene where a luxury yacht went down in flames Wednesday night in Marina del Rey.

Marina del Rey’s harbor produced an unexpected light show Wednesday evening as a luxury yacht loaded with ammunition and fireworks burned for more than two hours before flames were extinguished, authorities said.

Flames leaped 20 to 30 feet from the 100-foot vessel, dubbed the Admiral, while live ammunition rounds could be heard firing from the boat, according to videos from the scene .

Thursday morning, the charred yacht was lying on its side, and the water around it was tinted red from the diesel fuel dumped from the vessel. A Coast Guard spokesperson said an estimated 4,000 gallons of diesel was dumped into the water. The total is not official as monitoring continues.

Los Angeles County Fire Department officials said two passengers aboard the boat exited safely. No information was available about the cause of the blaze.

An L.A. County Fire spokesperson said one individual suffered minor injuries, was treated at the scene and was released.

The boat, traveling at a high speed, crashed into the jetty near its slip, killing a man. It would have been much worse, if not for the quick thinking of a passenger.

Firefighters responded to a call around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday and eventually knocked out the flames at 10:33 p.m. The boat was declared fully submerged at 11:33 p.m.

The yacht’s owner, who was not identified, told fire officials that the vessel was carrying 1,000 rounds of ammunition and fireworks.

U.S. Coast Guard personnel confirmed they were on the scene evaluating cleanup options.
