Monohull one-design racing is as popular as ever, but it can be harder to find affordable one-design multihulls, especially trimarans. Corsair Marine aims to change that with its Pulse 600, a trailerable, 20-foot trimaran designed and built for the one-design market. 

Successful one-designs must be able to travel to compete, and that requirement can hinder wide-beamed multihulls. The Pulse’s beam is 19 feet 8 inches, but the boat folds down in minutes to 6 feet 11 inches. It weighs less than 1,000 pounds and comes with a composite cradle that is adaptable to a trailer cradle or a beach dolly. 

The Pulse 600 isn’t just a one-design racer, it’s also an entry-level trimaran. The beach is a perfect place to daysail a Pulse because it has a 9-inch board-up draft and a cassette-style rudder. The self-draining cockpit comfortably carries a crew of four, but it can be singlehanded. The Pulse’s two headsails are roller furling and all the controls are within reach of the helmsman. The mainsheet is on a traveler aft.

There is plenty of extra room on the trampolines. The forward cabin is weatherproof and is about the size of an adult, and there is a watertight storage compartment forward of the mast. The mast is alloy composite and the hull is GRP on a carbon frame.

The mainsail and jib are 290 square feet; the Pulse also has a spinnaker and a 206-square-foot headsail that Corsair calls a “flying headsail,” and says is similar to a code zero or A1. For comparison, a 19-foot, 700-pound Lightning’s sail area is 61% of the Pulse’s, giving some idea of the trimaran’s horsepower.

The Pulse 600 is built in Vietnam, but North American Corsair owners have formed a vibrant sailing community with an up-to-date website, sail.corsairmarine.com . The 30-year-old boatbuilding company provides considerable support for its sailors and boats. 

Placed between stocky cruising multihulls and racing multihull development classes, Corsair Marine’s Pulse 600 is in a sailing sweet spot.

The back story.

Fans of fast multihulls will be familiar with Corsair trimarans which have been admired all around the world for over 30 years, for the ingenious folding system for the arms and for their performance. Ever since the emblematic Corsair 27, the yard has offered numerous multihulls ranging from pure racers to (fast) cruising boats. The pulse 600 is the latest boat from the yard which is now located in Vietnam and which was bought in 2010 by the Australian builder Seawind Catamarans.

A boat which can be raced and enjoyed by even the most experienced crews!

A guided tour

The first impression you get with the Pulse is that it feels much bigger than the six meters shown on the technical specifications. Notably, the cockpit is very welcoming, being three meters long and 1.45 meters wide. But with the trampolines, this width increases to 4.50 meters, offering a gigantic platform to bring the children along on a trip. At the front of this small trimaran, there is a very practical cuddy which is easy to access to stow your things. The "coachroof" (which is offered in three colors: red, yellow or blue) is removable, allowing you to free up even more space and making the access to the foredeck even easier. An option which will no doubt be favored when racing. So the roof is removable, but once it is fitted, it is completely watertight. The yard also wanted to offer a locker with a watertight lid which is located forward under the coach roof. You can easily stow your belongings here. In order to provide stowage, a large cockpit and good performance under sail on a boat just six meters in length, they had to find a neat trick for fitting the mast. The solution is a structural frame with a hexagonal shape. This means that you can still get into the little cabin and that the mast is solidly and reassuringly supported. Clever. Designed by Franois Perus, the Pulse 600 has a modern look which will be a real head turner in a harbor. The three inverted bows give it an undeniable racing look, which the modern and well cut (North) sails further reinforce. Those who have had the chance to sail on the latest offering from the yard claim that the boat can easily be sailed at the speed of the windƒ WeÍll confirm this in our (forthcoming) test. The racing look was important, but the safety of the boat and the crew was the priority during the development of the trimaran, where the choice of high volume hulls gives minimum risk of tripping up during boisterous runs! In the same vein, the cockpit is self-draining. As for the anti-leeway system, Corsair has opted for ease of use. The trimaran is equipped with a single rudder blade and one a deep daggerboard (1.10 meter draft). Both the daggerboard and the rudder blade lift up easily and without effort. The Corsair Pulse 600 is an innovative new design from Corsair Marine and upcoming French designer, Francois Perus. The Pulse combines the convenience and affordability of trailer sailing, with the speed and performance of a trimaran, packaged as an easy to operate sailing boat.

Travel by road and explore further

Folding easily down to a normal trailer width, you can travel long distances by road and explore the hidden gems by water. There is no need to dismantle beams or rack and stack the Pulse, it folds away neatly by just releasing for bolts. The mast lowers on its own base. This can be done by one person in about an hour with some practice.  

Fast easy and safe

The Pulse features large buoyant floats making it very safe to sail fast downwind and upwind. You can sail up to 20 knots if you push it, or just wind back into cruise mode by easing sails. This boat can be sailed easily by two people with a furling mainsail, furling jib and optional furling spinnaker.
