Review of Capri 14.2

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all.

The boat equipped with a fractional rig. A fractional rig has smaller headsails which make tacking easier, which is an advantage for cruisers and racers, of course. The downside is that having the wind from behind often requires a genaker or a spinnaker for optimal speed.

CentreBoard

The Capri 14.2 is equipped with a centreboard keel. A centreboard keel is a pivoting lifting keel, allowing to sail both coastal and inland waters.

The boat can sail close to the beach as the draft is just 0.10 - 0.20 meter (0.33 - 0.63 ft) dependent of the load. See immersion rate below.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Capri 14.2 is about 50 kg/cm, alternatively 284 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 50 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 284 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Want to buy Capri 14.2 or Performance 15

  • Add to quote

I am interested in buying a used Catalina Capri 14.2 or Performance 15. Having a difficult time finding something close to home that is reasonably well maintained. Possibly interested in a similar sailboat. My key criteria is that total length including trailer is less than 20'. Whatever I buy has to fit in my garage. I am in Houston, Texas. Thank you.

A similar boat is the Lido 14, check the interweb for owners associations, often the best source for one designs. When I was a kid I cut a little door in the tilt up garage door for the mast to stick thru. Lido 14 Classified Ads

capttb - Nice looking but quite a bit more than I was hoping to spend. Also, that is quite far.

Um, I've not heard of the Performance 15. Is it perhaps a Precision 15? The Capri 14.2 is a great little starter boat. Forgiving, light, easy to trailer, but still has a crude traveler, mainsheet, vang, and basic jib sheets and cleats. Boat will plane over 12 knots wind with 1 person in it, especially downhill... with 2 in it, it'll take closer to 18 knots of wind, and when you steer up in that kind of wind, you'll be struggling to keep it flat. Overall a pretty lively boat, while still being pretty easy to keep dry... it'll punish you quickly if you don't move to keep it flat. Fast learning curve no that boat. If we are talking Precision 15, that's a pretty equivalent boat to the Capri 14.2. Really a Ford versus Chevy argument, both are pretty even boats, I think the Precision 15 is slightly faster. Also it should be noted that both the Capri 14.2 and Precision 15 come in centerboard (common) and keel (mostly sold to training schools) models.

So I just found another boat that I can't seem to find much information about. Monark (Monarch?) 14 I have done about 30 minutes of searching and cannot seem to find much about this boat. The photo does not show the jib, but I am told it has one.

  2. CAPRI 14.2 (CATALINA)

It takes into consideration "reported" sail area, displacement and length at waterline. The higher the number the faster speed prediction for the boat. A cat with a number 0.6 is likely to sail 6kts in 10kts wind, a cat with a number of 0.7 is likely to sail at 7kts in 10kts wind. KSP = (Lwl*SA÷D)^0.5*0.5

  4. Capri 14.2 or 16.5?

The 16.5 has much more room for under deck storage. Both have self bailing cockpits with inner and outer hulls. Check space between for accumulated water (hull leak - rain or sea) by removal of drain plug. Check for "oil canning" or hull deformation due to improper bunk support.

  5. Sailboat Catalina Capri 14.2 review

The Catalina Capri 14.2 sailboat does not stand upas well in a crash as our other boats do. In our sailing camp we frequently have head-on and T-bone crashes during races. Usually the boats come out with visible cracks or stress lines. A good fiberglass repair person can fix this, but it is very frustrating to pull boats out of the water every ...

  6. Capri 14.2 vs American Sail 14.6

New Member. I have sailed both, and I think the catalina 14.2 is a much sportier boat. The main reason I like the catalina is the heavy metal centerboard, hiking straps, and boom vang adjustments. The furler jib is a nice touch as well. Now, the american 14.6 that I have seen have a old fashioned boom, no fuller jib, fiberglass centerboard, and ...

  7. First Boat? Any of these: O'Day Mariner, Balboa, or Capri 14.2

I was originally completely set on a Catalina Capri 14.2, but the more I look around, you are almost paying the same price for a used one of those as a nice 20 foot boat with some interior space. I'm just not sure that getting a 20 foot boat would be wise as a first boat. There is a 1974 O'day Mariner 2+2 for $4,500 in the area, and a Balboa 20 ...

  9. Capri 14.2

    103. 0. Southern Maryland--Patuxent. Jul 28, 2009. #3. The Capri 14.2 is a fun little boat for just knocking around with the family, and for casual sailing. It's a stable platform, good for the kids. Simple rig and setup. I raced one in our local Thursday smallboat fleet for a few years until I picked up an Albacore.

  10. Small Boat sailing (Capri 14.2)

All the sail controls of bigger, including vang, sheet, traveler, jib, cunningham, leach lines rig tension, the whole gambit. Most of what works on your 14.2 will translate well into bigger boats. However, once you get to a certain size, surfing easily starts to require big waves, or an ultra-light displacement boat.

  12. Looking to buy a Capri 14.2

North Sails has a post regarding how to adjust sails on a 14.2. The keel version draws two feet, adds 200 pounds of ballast, and I use a Honda 2.3 long shaft outboard which provides plenty of power and is a four stroke engine, air cooled, with a centrifugal clutch which effectively gives you a neutral/idle feature.

Fully agree with all of the other comments people have made. I have both a Sunfish and Capri 14. 21. Why is the Capri 14.2 so slow?

I'm referring to the Portsmouth rating of 99.8-100.2; which is significantly slower than very similar boats (such as the Lido 14 with a rating of 98.3-99.7). The Capri looks so sleak and fast, it's hard to believe that it should take such a speed penalty just because it's 30 pounds heavier (especially since a lot of Lido's are 30+ years old and ...

  23. Capri/Catalina 14.2 definition

"The Capri 14 W.D.Schock ( Lido's , Santana's , Harbor series) made is a Lido with a fixed keel ." The Lido is a Schock product. The Capri 14.2 is not . The Lido is the superior race boat between the two but I have enjoyed my Capri 14.2 as a nice all round boat. My 2 cents.
