L’histoire discrète du “Badis 1”, le nouveau voilier de Mohammed VI
Mohammed VI est le nouveau propriétaire d’un voilier de 70 mètres de long, actuellement au mouillage au large de M'diq. Le navire, ancienne propriété de l’Américain Bill Duker qui en demandait 88 millions d’euros, a été rebaptisé “Badis 1” et bat pavillon marocain depuis mars 2019. Selon nos informations, il pourrait avoir été offert. TelQuel passe sous la ligne de flottaison pour raconter son histoire.

C asablanca, le 24 juin. Sur la terrasse d’un centre commercial fraichement inauguré sur le littoral de la capitale économique, les visiteurs s’adonnent à quelques selfies, face à la mer. Au deuxième plan de leurs clichés, une lourde digue protège la partie militaire du port de Casablanca des assauts de la houle. Elle laisse deviner le haut de quelques navires : la frégate multimission Mohammed VI, reconnaissable à sa peinture grise militaire et ses formes étudiées pour demeurer furtive sur les écrans radars ; la goélette El Boughaz 1 et ses trois mâts blancs ; les deux mâts du yacht Badis 1 , dont le principal en carbone culmine à près de 72 mètres au-dessus du niveau de la mer, qui permettent de hisser près de 3000 mètres carrés de voilure.

Un premier propriétaire haut en couleur
Si la digue ne laisse pas apercevoir sa coque, le Badis 1 est bien amarré là, comme en témoigne l’observation à l’oeil nu de sa mature et les informations des sites de suivi du trafic maritime. Ce navire de 70 mètres de long et 13 mètres de large – il fait partie des 10 plus grands yachts à voile du monde – est arrivé à quai à Casablanca courant du mois de juin, suscitant l’interrogation des plus curieux. Ce nouveau voilier peut-il accoster dans tous les ports du pays ? “ Au vu des dimensions de ce bateau, il peut accoster à Tanger ville, Marina Smir, Mohammedia… Ce sont des ports qui accueillent des bateaux de plaisance qui font jusqu’à 90 mètres de long et Tanger ville par exemple, reçoit des bateaux de croisière de 360 mètres” , nous explique Khalid Samir, commandant du port de Tanger Med, et vieux routier dans le domaine maritime.
Construit par le chantier naval italien Perini Navi, le Badis 1 a été mis à l’eau en 2016 sous le nom de Sybaris . Son propriétaire d’alors, Bill Duker, un ancien avocat américain révoqué du barreau dans les années 1990 et reconverti en homme d’affaires dans la technologie via sa société Amici, a dépensé entre 70 et 100 millions de dollars pour en faire l’acquisition via la société “Sybaris Ltd”, basée sur l’île de Man.
Après sa mise à l’eau, Ducker l’a fièrement exhibé dans de nombreux rassemblements de yachts où il a raflé plusieurs prix, dont celui du “ meilleur intérieur ” au Monaco Yacht Show en 2016. Les images du bateau ne sont pas rares , et témoignent du confort des 6 cabines (1 master suite, 2 cabines VIP, et 3 cabines doubles) pouvant accueillir jusqu’à 12 invités, outre les 12 membres d’équipage. Cockpit de 87 mètres carrés, 157 mètres carrés de salon, finitions au titane, pont immaculé, escaliers transparents… Le Badis 1 mérite sa réputation.
Bill Duker est-il en escale au Maroc ? Non, car il n’est plus propriétaire de ce voilier. Son bateau était à vendre depuis avril 2017, et la presse spécialisée dans le yachting annonçait que le ketch avait trouvé preneur en octobre 2018, grâce à l’entremise de Jamie Edmiston, de la société éponyme “Edmiston”. Sur son site , l’entreprise revendique avoir “ vendu certains des yachts les plus importants du monde ”. Dans une publication d’Edmiston à mi-chemin entre un magazine et un catalogue , datée de 2017, la société fait la promotion du Sybaris , dont Duker demande “88 millions d’euros”. Comme argument de vente, Edmiston compare, non sans ironie, les intérêts d’un yacht par rapport à d’autres acquisitions réservées aux multimillionnaires. Une île privée dans les Grenadines à 100 millions de dollars ? “ Pas de villa, pas d’énergie. En fait, rien à part du potentiel… ”
TelQuel a téléphoné à l’agent d’Edmiston que le catalogue recommande de “ contacter pour plus d’information sur cette opportunité unique ”. L’échange fut bref. “ Je vous arrête tout de suite, je ne suis pas habilité à commenter sur les transactions. Bonne fin de journée, au revoir ”, coupe-t-il avant de raccrocher. Deuxième tentative, sur le standard d’Edmiston cette fois : une collaboratrice de Jamie Edmiston, après avoir soigneusement noté nos coordonnées, nous promet que ce dernier nous fera parvenir des réponses. A l’heure où nous publions, nous attendons toujours.
On ne peut plus officiel
Alors qui est le nouveau propriétaire du luxueux voilier ? Ce n’est pas un secret pour les utilisateurs du forum FAR Maroc, réputé proche de l’armée. “ Le nouveau yacht de SM le Roi -BADIS 1, ex-Sybaris – […] est arrivé début de ce mois au quai royal sur Casablanca, ” a posté un administrateur du forum le 11 juin , avec une photo aérienne du bateau à quai, juste derrière El Boughaz 1 .

Effectivement, Mohammed VI est bien le propriétaire de ce bateau, comme le confirme de manière officielle la base de données publique et gratuite du projet Equasis.
Né en 1998 de la volonté de la Commission européenne et de l’administration maritime française de “ développer un système d’information qui agrège les informations de sécurité existantes sur les navires ”, Equasis est approvisionné par plusieurs sources publiques et privées, dont Lloyd’s qui est la nouvelle société de classification du Badis depuis le 15 novembre 2018 . Le conseil d’administration d’Equasis est composé d’une dizaine d’administrations publiques de différents pays et d’organisations internationales.
Le nom du propriétaire est également confirmé par la base de données de l’Organisation maritime internationale (IMO), consultée par TelQuel .
Selon Equasis, recoupé par d’autres plateformes, le bateau est passé sous pavillon marocain en février 2019 et été rebaptisé “Badis 1” en mars.
Escale à Abu Dhabi
Le bateau avait été une première fois rebaptisé “Badis” (sans le “1”, NDLR) en octobre 2018. A ce moment-là, le bateau a aussi changé une première fois de propriétaire. Alors détenu par la société offshore “Sybaris Ltd”, le bateau devient le 10 octobre 2018 la propriété d’une société intitulée “Project S Vessel Ltd”, dont on trouve des adresses aux îles Caïmans et à Abu Dhabi. TelQuel n’est pas parvenu à identifier qui était la personne physique ou morale derrière cette société. Entre octobre 2018 et mars 2019, le bateau est également confié en gestion à une société émiratie, “Al Seer Marine Supplies”.
Basée à Abu Dhabi, la société propose un “ portefeuille de services qui répondent à tous les besoins des propriétaires de bateaux ,” explique-t-elle sur son site . Parmi les bateaux en gestion, chez Al Seer, plusieurs bateaux appartenant à des membres de la famille royale émiratie : le yacht de 73 mètres “ Rabdan” du prince héritier Mohammed bin Zayed al Nahyan (MBZ), le “ Maryah” de Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed, et le “ Topaz” de Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed . Ce dernier est d’ailleurs détenu via une société baptisée “Project A Vessel Ltd”, domiciliée chez Al Seer à Abu Dhabi, et dont l’intitulé rappelle celui de la société qui a détenu durant six mois le Badis entre Bill Duker et Mohammed VI.
Le premier changement de nom, incomplet puis rectifié en mars 2019, laisse à penser que le navire était destiné au roi du Maroc dès sa cession en octobre 2018. D’autant que “Badis” fait référence à ce rocher sur la côte méditerranéenne, à quelques kilomètres à l’est d’Al Hoceima, occupé par des militaires espagnols, et sur lequel le Maroc n’a cessé de revendiquer la souveraineté. Néanmoins, il nous est impossible d’établir un lien entre Mohammed VI et la société “Project S Vessel Limited”. Selon nos informations, le yacht pourrait en fait avoir été offert au roi du Maroc. De la part de qui ? Impossible de le confirmer.
Ballet méditerranéen
L’itinéraire du bateau est ensuite assez clair depuis qu’il est officiellement la propriété de Mohammed VI. Jusqu’à fin mars, le bateau a séjourné quelque temps à La Spezia, en Italie, où le constructeur du bateau, Perini Navi, a une succursale. Dès février, le bateau y avait été photographié par des utilisateurs d’Instagram, attestant que le bateau ne s’appelait déjà plus Sybaris .

Après un rapide passage par Tanger, le Badis 1 arrive mi-avril dans le port de La Ciotat, dans le sud de la France, où il restera près de deux mois. Le yacht aurait pu s’y refaire une beauté. Depuis 20 ans, la petite cité azuréenne s’est en effet transformée en plateforme de construction, réparation et entretien de yacht. TelQuel a contacté par mail plusieurs entreprises implantées sur le site de La Ciotat Shipyards. Les deux seuls chantiers navals ayant répondu ont affirmé ne pas avoir accueilli le bateau.
En juin, le Badis 1 entre dans le port de Casablanca pour s’amarrer derrière El Boughaz 1, construit dans les années 1930, reconverti en yacht de luxe dans les années 1980, et acquis dans les années 2000 par la société SMCD Limited basée dans les Iles vierges britanniques. Le Badis 1 repart le 26 juin au soir du port de Casablanca, plein gaz, pour mettre le cap au nord. Le bateau longe la côte atlantique, franchit le détroit de Gibraltar au petit matin, et s’enfonce à l’est le long de la côte méditerranéenne. Le 27 juin, durant près de 24 heures, le navire fait des ronds dans l’eau au large de Martil, avant de se mettre au mouillage à quelques centaines de mètres de la plage de M’diq, en face du Sofitel Tamuda Bay.
Mohammed VI confirme avec le nautisme une nouvelle passion commune avec son père. Hassan II possédait lui-même deux bateaux, le Oued Eddahab et le Al Massira .
