Boat of the Week: How This Award-Winning 164-Foot Superyacht Got Smarter—and Greener
Based on heesen's 2011 satori series, 'aquamarine' is sleeker and more fuel efficient, with a much shallower draft than its predecessors., julia zaltzman, julia zaltzman's most recent stories.

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. That saying might sound like simple common sense to an American or Briton. Just don’t say it to a Dutchman, especially one bent on designing and building best-in-class superyachts. Even though Heesen ’s Satori 50-meter (164-foot) class was considered top of its class—immediately attracting eight buyers after the model was launched in 2011—the Dutch builder decided to create an even greener, sleeker and more hydrodynamic yacht with a highly catchy, seafaring name.

Aquamarine , which will be delivered early next year, is the first yacht in Heesen ’s new 5000 Aluminum Class. Boiled down, she’s essentially an upgrade built around a proven platform. Oh, but what an upgrade.
Heesen’s naval architects designed an optimized and sleeker semi-displacement hull in partnership with Dutch hydrodynamicists Van Oossanen. Omega Architects created a sportier exterior. The Japanese-inspired interior by Italian designer Cristiano Gatto is sheer elegance, thanks to its simple execution, but the simplicity leaves the owners with a blank canvas to customize the important spaces, including the palatial master stateroom on the main deck and four guest suites on the deck below.
Heesen raised the height of the transom to create a rear space that can be used as both beach club and tender garage. The foldout swim platform adds an extra dimension to enjoying the water. Heesen Yachts
“We gave the yacht a facelift,” says Thom Conboy, Heesen’s U.S. representative, about the changes in Aquamarine compared to the Satori series. Actually, the biggest structural changes are more akin to a tummy tuck. The 164-footer’s altered running surface includes a significantly reduced draft that makes it a much more versatile cruising machine. “The propellers are tucked up into tunnels beneath the hull, as on the previous design, but we also raised the transom,” says Conboy. “That decreased the yacht’s draft by more than a foot and a half, which makes Aquamarine quite favorable for shallower waters like the Bahamas.”
The raised aft deck, which is finished on top in a collection of sunpads, allowed the designers create a full-height, multi-purpose tender garage that also works as a luxury beach club since it connects directly to the flush swim platform. “It’s a wonderful platform when anchored up somewhere for people to enjoy watersports and a swim,” says Conboy.
On the top deck is an open area for sunbathing and a Jacuzzi, with a hardtop for shade. On the forward section of the yacht is a private nook with twin lounges and a table.
The new hull bottom on this next-generation Heesen went through extensive tank testing to prove that it would be more efficient than the last running surface.
Omega Architects used large swaths of glass for both form and function; excessive amounts of light bathe the interior, but also create beautiful, black lines that give Aquamarine her lean profile. The bulkheads flow nicely along the hull, culminating in a curved bow.
Another of Aquamarine’s next-generation features are MTU’s new “green-ocean” 16V4000 M65L engines, which are rated to a total of 7,500 horsepower. While that translates to a lot of horses under the hood, these engines are actually smaller than the previous MTU generation, but have the same power-to-weight ratio. That means less fuel is required to hit the expected top speed of 23 knots. Aquamarine will have transatlantic range of 3,100 nautical miles at 11 knots.
The yacht will also be the first in her size range to have selective catalytic reduction (SCR) that reduces NOx emissions, for IMO Tier III compliance. “We evolve with our industry and comply with new regulations, but we always try to stay a little ahead of the curve,” says Conboy. “I would say Aquamarine is as green as anything that’s being done in the yachting industry today.”
The light-colored minimalist sky lounge is representative of the rest of Cristiano Gatto’s interior, which has a Japanese-inspired sensibility. Heesen Yachts
In terms of missions, Conboy sees this all-aluminum yacht as a versatile cruising machine that would be suited to just about any waterway in the world. “She’ll probably attract a pretty traditional buyer,” he says. “She will have the type of owner who will use the boat in the Mediterranean, Maine or the Grenadines.”
Aquamarine is for sale for $40.3 million. Check out this virtual walkthrough as the interior is now being completed in the Heesen shipyard. Here are more images of what promises to be an exciting new generation of yachts for Heesen.

One of Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich’s more ‘modest’ superyachts changed ownership on the same day Russia invaded Ukraine
- A yacht linked to oligarch Roman Abramovich changed hands hours after Russia invaded Ukraine.
- Abramovich appears to have transferred it to his associate, David Davidovich, The Guardian reported .
- At 164 feet, the Aquamarine is modest compared to Abramovich's 536-foot Eclipse and 460-foot Solaris.
On February 24, the day that Russia invaded Ukraine, a $40.3 million superyacht named the Aquamarine changed owners, according to an investigation The Guardian published Friday.
Based on public records, Roman Abramovich transferred ownership of the Aquamarine to an associate, the businessman David Davidovich, the outlet reported.
Forbes has called Davidovich "Abramovich's much lower-profile right-hand man."
The Guardian tracked the yacht's apparent ownership swap through two companies, MHC Jersey Ltd, which is registered in New Jersey, and an entity called Norma Investments, which is listed in the British Virgin Islands.
Abramovich was thought to be in charge of Norma Investments, but mere hours after Russia attacked Ukraine, Davidovich became the owner, per securities filings previously reported by the Wall Street Journal .
The Guardian reported that Norma Investments is the only listed shareholder in MHC Jersey Ltd, per New Jersey public records. MHC Jersey Ltd is also the owner of the Aquamarine yacht, per MarineTraffic.
The Aquamarine is currently dry-docked Vlissingen, a port in the Netherlands, and while Dutch authorities seized 14 yachts on Wednesday , representatives declined to comment to The Guardian if the Aquamarine was among them.
Compared to Abramovich's megayachts, the Eclipse and the Solaris, the Aquamarine is modest: it comes in at 164 feet. The Eclipse is 536 feet , and the Solaris is 460 feet .
The $600 million Solaris and the $700 million Eclipse are docked in Turkey , and two other yachts are in the Caribbean . All appear to be on the run from sanctions.
The UK, EU, and Canada have sanctioned Abramovich, but Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy asked the US not to sanction him, saying that Abramovich could potentially be a peace negotiator, the Wall Street Journal reported . He has reportedly assisted with prisoner exchanges and escape routes .
Related stories
Davidovich told The Guardian in a statement that he could "confirm that I am the owner of MHC Jersey Ltd and the Aquamarine yacht," as well as the majority owner in Norma Investments, and said he did not think the Aquamarine was subject to sanctions.
Representatives for Abramovich told The Guardian that he is not the ultimate beneficiary of MHC Jersey.
The Aquamarine is currently moored for repairs at Damen Shiprepair, where an anonymous source told the Guardian it was "generally understood that it had been Abramovich's yacht," the outlet reported.
The source added that the vessel went into Damen in November 2021 but that no one but its existing crew has worked on it since March 10, when Abramovich was sanctioned by the UK.
In addition to his status as a Russian oligarch , Abramovich is known as the owner of Chelsea FC, the English Premier League soccer team, which he bought in 2003. Last month, he announced plans to sell the club amid sanctions, apparently for $2.5 billion, the New York Times reported.

The World's First Hydrogen-Powered Superyacht Has a $644 Million Price Tag
Superyachts seemed to be among the last modes of (luxe) transportation to bend toward the growing consumer demand for eco-friendly engine designs. But if news from last week’s Monaco Yacht Show served as a bellwether, the industry meant to cater to the wealthiest among us made a progressive splash with the unveiling of Aqua, the world's first hydrogen-powered superyacht.
Designed by the Dutch firm Sinot Yacht & Architecture Design, Aqua is a nearly 400-foot-long vessel that's run entirely by a renewable energy source. "Water is the eternal fuel of life, the life-sustaining force that makes planet Earth habitable," says Sander Sinot, founder of the firm that bears his name. "Water is soft, yet at the same time it cuts through hard rocks." It was this appreciation of water that helped the firm find balance between the natural world and the technological. The propulsion system is made up of two 28-ton vacuumed tanks that each contain liquified hydrogen which are stored at -423 degrees Fahrenheit. Along with being eco-friendly, hydrogen-based energy means for a quieter experience aboard the ship in comparison to traditional engines. That said, there will be backup diesel generators handy should the captain ever need them.
The infinity pool aboard AQUA.
There was much confusion on Monday if there was already a buyer who had paid the hefty $644 million price tag. Reports spread throughout the internet that billionaire Bill Gates had purchased the superyacht, rumors that proved to be false. Yet readers couldn't be blamed for believing such reports, as images show Aqua to include its own infinity pool, helipad, spa, and gym—amenities meant to attract billionaires such as Gates.
An aerial view of the superyacht shows how close passengers can get to the water, as well as the cascading design of the infinity pool.
Sinot and his team designed the vessel to safely bring passengers as close to the water as possible. "Water is relaxation; it makes us calmer and more creative," Sinot comments. "We wanted to provide those on board with the closest possible proximity to the water. The aft deck features an innovative series of platforms cascading down towards the sea, while a large swim platform allows all passengers to enjoy the optimal experience of accessing the water at sea level."
One of the bedrooms inside of Aqua shows a minimalist aesthetic.
Aqua can reach speeds of up to 19.5 mph and features enough room for 14 guests and 31 crew members. The firm plans to complete the vessel by 2024.

Aquamarine - 2021
Built to impress, designed for living
Possessing a narrow, curved and sporty superstructure, Aquamarine is a 50m fast-cruising aluminium semi-displacement yacht with crisp design language and enviable appeal. A shallow draft of just 2.15m makes her a versatile cruising yacht for both the clearwater bays of the Bahamas and the Mediterranean sea. Equipped with MTU’s new "green ocean" engines with reduced NOx emissions, Aquamarine is the first fast-cruising yacht below 500GT to be IMO Tier III compliant.
First impressions
The steepness of Aquamarine’s bow is an aesthetic detail that forms an integral part of her crisp design language.
"Aquamarine fits into the Heesen heritage of producing sporty boats, but the whole design language is a little bit more distinct"
Frank Laupman
Omega Yachts
Step aboard
Simple in its complexity, Aquamarine’s interior design perfectly matches her contemporary and dynamic exterior line. Large windows result in gorgeous vistas from within, providing an uninterrupted sense of freedom that embodies the spirit of the yacht as a whole. Textures and geometric patterns work in harmony with the calming, colour palette.
"There is a sense of intimacy throughout the yacht, an understated elegance that helps guests to feel comfortable and at ease"

AQUAMARINE // Heesen Yachts
Aquamarine marks the new 5000-series by heesen yachts.
Heesen Yachts optimized their proven 5000-series together with Omega Architects and Van Oossanen. The yacht got an updated exterior design for a fresher look and a new optimized hull design that enables the efficiency of 12 %. Moreover, it features the new green oceanic engines (16V4000M65L) by MTU with an SCR unit (Selective Catalytic Reduction) to reduce NOx emissions to meet the TIER III rules.
“The design we created for the new 5000 Aluminium Class combines our own heritage with that of Heesen as a builder of elegant and sporty aluminum motor yachts,” comments Frank Laupman of Omega Architects. “The ‘integrated hull and body design’, which was first seen on the iconic 65m Galactica Star , gives a strong character to the yacht’s profile.”
Thanks to propellor tunnels, the 50m yacht has a draft of just 2.15 to reach shallow waters.
Project AQUAMARINE (YN 18950) is ready in January 2021.
Interior of AQUAMARINE
Cristiano Gatto designed a light and bright interior with big windows to enjoy panoramic views. The designer also selected furniture from Armani/Casa and Bottega Veneta.
Cristiano Gatto comments:
“I believe that Japanese accents help to create the right mood on board. Simplicity, linearity and bright colors are the main themes throughout. Our aim was to provide the owner and guests with a sense of wellbeing and relaxation. Clean and uncluttered living gives a sense of balance and love for beauty.”
