Summary Analysis of the Design Ratios for the Alden 50

eBook: How to Avoid Buying the Wrong Sailboat

1. A Sail Area/Displacement Ratio of just 15.5 suggests that the Alden 50 will need a stiff breeze to get her going. In light conditions, unless you've got plenty of time on your hands, motor-sailing may be the way to go.

2. A Ballast/Displacement Ratio of 42.9 means that the Alden 50 will stand up well to her canvas in a blow, helping her to power through the waves.

3. A Displacement/Length Ratio of 333, tells us the Alden 50 is clearly a heavy displacement cruising boat. You can load her down with all your cruising gear and equipment and it will hardly affect her waterline. Not an ideal choice for coastal sailing, but she'll come into her own on an offshore passage in testing conditions.

4. Ted Brewer's Comfort Ratio of 44.7 suggests that crew comfort of a Alden 50 in a seaway is similar to what you would associate with the motion of a heavy bluewater cruising boat. Pitching and rolling will be well damped - your cup of coffee on the salon table stands a reasonable chance of staying there in most conditions.

5. The Capsize Screening Formula (CSF) of 1.6 tells us that an Alden 50 would be a safer choice of sailboat for an ocean passage than one with a CSF of more than 2.0.

Cruisers' Questions

What are the pros and cons of a stub keel with a centerboard rather than a fin keel?

That's an interesting question. There are different types of keels that have different advantages and disadvantages depending on your sailing goals and preferences. Here are some pros and cons of a stub keel with a centerboard versus a fin keel:

  • A stub keel with a centerboard allows you to adjust the draft of your boat by raising or lowering the centerboard. This can be useful for sailing in shallow waters or beaching your boat. A fin keel has a fixed draft that limits your access to some areas.
  • A stub keel with a centerboard may have less performance than a fin keel, especially when sailing upwind. A fin keel offers better lateral resistance and stability, which translates into higher speed and less leeway. A stub keel with a centerboard may also create more drag when the centerboard is down.
  • A stub keel with a centerboard requires more maintenance and complexity than a fin keel. You need to operate the mechanism that controls the centerboard, which may involve ropes, pulleys, winches, or hydraulics. A fin keel is simpler and more robust, as it is bolted to the hull.
  • A stub keel with a centerboard may take up some space inside the boat, depending on how the centerboard is stored when raised. A fin keel does not affect the interior volume of the hull.

As you can see, there is no definitive answer to which keel type is better. It depends on your sailing style, preferences, and needs. Some sailors prefer the versatility and shallow draft of a stub keel with a centerboard, while others prefer the performance and simplicity of a fin keel.

Who was John G Alden, and what were the best-known of his sailboat designs?

John G. Alden was a naval architect who opened his design office in 1909 and became famous for his fast and seaworthy offshore boats. He designed a broad range of boats and yachts, many of which have become true classics. Some of his best-known sailboat designs are:

  • The Malabar series, which won many offshore races between 1923 and 1932.
  • The Sakonnet One-Design, which was designed for the Sakonnet Yacht Club, where Alden learned how to sail.
  • The Cheoy Lee Offshore series, which were built by Cheoy Lee Shipyards in Hong Kong and became popular cruising boats.
  • The Boothbay Challenger and Boothbay Explorer, which were large ketch-rigged motor sailers that combined comfort and performance.

Other sailboats in the Alden range include:

Review of Alden 50 (1986)

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season.

The boat is equipped with 643.0 liter fresh water capacity.

CentreBoard

The Alden 50 (1986) is equipped with a centreboard keel. A centreboard keel is a pivoting lifting keel, allowing to sail both coastal and inland waters.

The keel is made of lead. Compared with iron, lead has the advantage of being 44% heavier, which allows a smaller keel and hence less water resistance and higher speed.

The boat can enter most marinas as the draft is just about 1.68 - 1.78 meter (5.51 - 5.81 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Alden 50 (1986) is typically equipped with a Westerbeke diesel engine at 70 hp (52 kW). Calculated max speed is about 5.8 knots.

The fuel tank has a capacity of 568.0 liters (150 US gallons, 124 imperial gallons).

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Alden 50 (1986) is 1.38, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 7.7 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Alden 50 (1986) is about 240 kg/cm, alternatively 1348 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 240 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 1348 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is a Ballast Ratio?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 51m 2 (548 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

If you need to renew parts of your running rig and is not quite sure of the dimensions, you may find the estimates computed below useful.

UsageLengthDiameter
Jib sheet 15.2 m(50.0 feet)16 mm(5/8 inch)
Genoa sheet 15.2 m(50.0 feet)16 mm(5/8 inch)
Mainsheet 38.1 m(125.0 feet)16 mm(5/8 inch)

Cheoy Lee Alden 50

Cheoy Lee Alden 50 is a 50 ′ 3 ″ / 15.3 m monohull sailboat designed by John G. Alden and built by Cheoy Lee Shipyard starting in 1967.

Drawing of Cheoy Lee Alden 50

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

WHIRLAWAY | Alden 50 | 50ft

Jamestown, RI, US

WHIRLAWAY is a very special thoroughbred. It was imagined by the team at C. Raymond Hunt Associates and brought to fruition by the professionals at Alden Yachts. Under the stewardship of three owners, the vessel was admired in every harbor it entered. It was the fourth owner that transformed it into a 21st-century motor yacht. WHIRLAWAY now runs faster, the three staterooms are more comfortable, the new salon windows allow for the sea breezes, the galley has been modernized, and the flybridge, with its carbon fiber hardtop, is the central gathering area.

Some of the most recent work done on WHIRLAWAY:

  • Cummins Diesels installed  2020
  • Transmissions installed  2020
  • Running gear installed  2020
  • Custom teak occasional chairs double as dining chairs, upholstery  2020
  • Headliner custom fitted to house LED lighting  2020

Bvi yacht sales overview, 1990 50′ alden 50 ‘ronald van bremen’.

Rarely does a classic of this pedigree come on the market in such upgraded and well-maintained condition

With her powerful engine and efficient, easy to handle sail plan, ‘Roland Von Breman’ is a joy to experience underway. Below decks she is welcoming and elegant with private accommodations for six to eight and a galley that is both easy to work in underway and is well out of the traffic flow with more than adequate counter space and storage.

Never mind that she receives compliments everywhere she goes, the best thing is how an Alden sails! Certainly a head turner, and likely one of the most beautiful American yacht designs ever built. This Alden is a once in a lifetime type of vessel that was custom built in 1990 , to the tune of (adjusted for inflation) $1.3 Million. With her incredible solid wood cabinetry and highest quality hardware, this is vessel that would be difficult to impossible to reproduce today. She has crossed the Atlantic three times, sailed around the world and made multiple passages between the east coast of the US and the Caribbean islands. If you are looking for a proven blue water cruiser, look no further….. She will not last long at this price!

Halekai is a luxurious, semi-custom sailing yacht, designed by John G. Alden, Inc. and built in Portsmouth, RI to the rigorous standards of American Bureau of Shipping-A1 offshore certification. She’s a proven world cruiser, having earned the rare honor of completing a circumnavigation.  Alden Yachts is a renowned top of the line yacht builder since 1909, known for rugged construction, superior joinery, high quality equipment and speed. She was customized by her current (and only) owners for self-reliant world cruising and outfitted specifically for their ten year circumnavigation. They refer to her as the “ultimate cruising boat,” based on their  extensive blue water experience sailing aboard their two previous boats.

“Halekai” has been meticulously maintained and constantly upgraded to the highest standards. The dark green hull was awl-gripped and the diesel engine was rebuilt during a $50,000 refit in 2011/12. A complete electronic refit was done in 2019. The layout consists of a large chain locker/storage compartment with watertight door, forward guest stateroom with head/shower, main salon, nav station, walk-in workshop, walk-through galley, and aft master stateroom with head/shower.

Due to her partially enclosed center cockpit from which they can set and adjust the roller-furled sails, they “never needed foul weather gear in 120,000 miles of sailing.”

YOU DON’T WANT TO MISS THIS BOAT! She’s the perfect world cruiser for a couple or family, and she has the experience and pedigree to prove it. Her stunning lines and graceful curves speak to her performance at sea, and the modifications that her owners have made to her have made her a self-contained “island” where you can be fully self sufficient.

Basically, all the work has been done for you to make this boat the ideal world cruiser. All you have to do is provision and set sail.
