South Bay Racing and Del Rey Yacht Club Host Hands-On Introduction to Yacht Racing

south bay yacht racing club

MARINA DEL REY— South Bay Yacht Racing and Del Rey Yacht Club have partnered again to bring Introduction to Yacht Racing (IYR) to Marina del Rey. The event will be held on March 18, allowing people to try yacht racing without being a yacht club member or committing to extensive, expensive sailing lessons. No experience is required, and sailors with experience are also welcome. After the event, those interested in racing this season will be assisted in joining a racing crew and invited to future sailing occasions.

The entire day costs just $30 and is an 18-and-over event. Information and required advance registration can be found at Meetup.com/intro-to-yacht-racing.

Over the last 12 years, IYR has helped hundreds of people to try out yacht racing. The event gets people past the yacht clubs’ “Members Only” signs and onto a boat in one day. Experienced skippers and sailors teach the new people basics of how a sailboat works and what it takes to be a crew member. Then, the new crew members are given hands-on experience in small groups aboard boats that actively race in the marina’s numerous events throughout the season.

The day starts with a basic orientation about sailing while emphasizing safety. Then, the group, which usually totals 50 participants, is broken into small groups and rotated among boats for instruction. Aboard different types of boats, participants are shown the essential equipment and how it’s properly used.

The group is given lunch at midday while learning basic racing rules and procedures, including how races are started and managed. Next, the small groups are assigned to boats, after which they will go on the water and practice boat handling. All boats then participate in a mock race around the marina.

At the end of the day, the group reassembles to debrief and answer questions. Those who want to get aboard a racing boat as a regular crew for the season may sign up to meet boat owners. Additional resources are provided to help new people learn more about how sails work, basic rules, racing tactics, etc., to become fully-fledged boat racers.

Business name : South Bay Yacht Racing Club

Until Marina del Rey and King Harbor were completed in the early 1960‘s there was little moorage available for sailboatsso there was little racing. Back then the Santa Monica Yacht Harbor was behind the now demolished breakwater off the Santa Monica Pier. South Coast Corinthian Yacht Club was represented there as was one of the original ‘Snipe’ one-design fleets (they launched from their trailers on the pier with the hoist used to off load commercial fishing boats.) When the two marinas opened, yacht clubs began to form and the foundations of a vital boating area were laid.

Click on the Year Book of 1968 picture to view it: Yacht racing requires lots of support: from the buoys anchored in the water, to the Race Committee boat that signals the races’ starts and records the racer’s finish times, to the yacht club that organizes the race and hosts the festivities after, and to the group empowered to create handicap rating systems – yacht racing requires many supporting institutions. The first Santa Monica Bay yacht clubs had to raise funds to construct their clubhouses, so joining a yacht club required a substantial financial commitment, and there was even a waiting list to get in line to pay those thousands of dollars. This expensive ‘buy-in’ was an especially big obstacle to the less permanent sailors in the local military and aerospace industries who would not be around to enjoy their yacht club investments for years to come. That was the environment that led founding Commodore Mitch Dazey and a few other King Harbor sailors to start the South Bay Yacht Racing Club in 1964. Within a decade the Club moved to Marina del Rey and has supported area racing ever since. I joined SBYRC in the mid-70’s when I moved into the area with a Ranger 26’ sailboat and a recent infection of the racing bug. My application to join my friends’ “landed” club was stuck on a waiting list, and club membership was a requirement to enter races – a reasonable rule to make sure each racer paid his share to the various organizations that supported the racing. There followed more than a decade of rapid expansion and interest in racing sailboats, and SBYRC thrived on the influx

Mayor’s Cup Races to Help Save The Great South Bay

by Robyn Silvestri, Executive Director | Sep 27, 2021 | Featured , Fishing and Boating , News

south bay yacht racing club

The 2021 Mayor’s Cup Charity Regatta & Soir ée took place on Saturday, September 18 on the Great South Bay followed immediately by what is quickly becoming an annual favorite celebration at the Long Island Yacht Club benefiting local environmental non-profit Save The Great South Bay.

One of the largest sailboat races on the Great South Bay, the Mayor’s Cup is organized by the Great South Bay Yacht Racing Association in association with the South Bay Cruising Club. Returning Race Committee Chair John Davis oversaw  the 7.8 nautical mile course which proved a tough battle for the skippers and their crews.  The light and variable winds, that changed direction multiple times throughout the race, made for very difficult conditions to keep the boats sailing.

Mayor’s Cup: A Multi-Class Regatta

Captain Rick Latorre and his crew aboard Dark Star won line honors and came in first place in the Spinnaker Division.  Eric Winberry and crew aboard Aleboat came in second place.  The Non Spinning Division was won by a great sailing performance by Gary Sebouhian and his crew aboard S/V Pandemonium.  Second place boat was Merry Ann and crew followed by Ed Anderson’s boat At Last.

The Cruising Division was won by Chris Demmarco who sailed single handedly and was the only boat in his division to complete the race in such light wind.  The Multi hull boats were sailing all over the racecourse looking for wind and was won by Kim Schaefer and his crew on the Trimaran Trillium.  Their competition was close behind aboard the Trimaran Getting There.  There were a total of 15 boats racing in the four classes.

The action was beautifully captured by Mike Busch of Great South Bay Images and Rich Labella of RJ Labella Photography and is available to view at www.greatsouthbay.org.

View the full event photo gallery here.

Then The Celebration…. The Soir é e

Directly following the Regatta and set to a stunning background with views to the Robert Moses Bridge, this year’s celebration was presented by York Analytical Laboratories at the Long Island Yacht Club. Celebrants were treated to live music by the ever-popular No Request Band along with tasty seafood delights served up by Bill and Maureen Zeller of Captree Clam .

We are thrilled to once again support this dedicated and action-oriented organization. – Michael Beckerich, CEO, York Analytical Laboratories

Under beautiful blue skies, Chuck Westfall of Thatch Island Oysters shucked hundreds of fresh Great South Bay oysters and guests dined on tasty treats from Coastal Kitchen , Mary Carroll’s , Ristorante Gemelli , Village Meat Market and Southside Fish and Clam .  As they raised funds to support the organization’s three core programs, guests enjoyed an exclusive tasting of beautifully aged armagnacs and cognac with local importer Larry Reiter of Columbus Wine and Spirits . Others had their fortunes told by the Collective Consciousness of Oakdale.

The Yacht Club’s grounds were decorated with a wide selection of native trees, bushes and plants donated by Long Island Natives . The plants were repurposed to build a native garden in Amityville’s Nautical Park after the event.

Remembering the Past, Celebrating the Present

The 2021 Mayor’s Cup Charity Regatta was dedicated in memory of former Babylon Village Mayor Ralph A. Scordino who sadly passed away in October 2020. Mayor Scordino was a longtime supporter of the Mayor’s Cup Charity Regatta and an avid supporter of Save The Great South Bay, 501(c)3. Current Babylon Village Mayor Mary Adams spoke of her predecessor’s love of the Bay and commitment to the environment.

Congratulations to grand prize winner Jay Price who won the 9’ 6” Paddleboard donated by Karen Marvin of South Shore Paddle Board.

Save The Great South Bay is grateful to event supporters Blue Point Brewing and the Lessing’s Hospitality Group along with South Shore Paddle Boards  and Spadefoot Design and Construction .

Support The Movement

If you missed this year’s celebration, you can still help. Go to www.savethegreatsouthbay.org to learn more about their programs and donate to support their work.

About Babylon Yacht Club

Committed to our members.

Babylon Yacht Club was founded in 1903 for two purposes, “…to encourage members to become proficient in the handling of their yachts,” and “…to promote sociability and recreation among its members.”

The Babylon Yacht Club is a private club. Prospective members must be sponsored by two current members of the club. Membership is granted by the Board of Governors following an application and interview process.

Our History

The Babylon Yacht Club was established in 1903. Our sailing history dates back to 1904, and our first 4th of July Regatta was held in 1905. In 1906, our members helped form the Great South Bay Yacht Racing Association.

Our location “at the foot of Eaton Lane” is the third home of the Club since first established in 1903. In the mid-1920s, a real estate firm which was developing Sequams Colony offered the Babylon Yacht Club the land on which it now sits, in exchange for the land the Club then sat on at the Babylon Dock. The clubhouse was moved by barge across the cove to what has been our home now for almost a century.

The Club has withstood the test of time thanks to our dedicated members. In more recent history, the BYC sustained major damage from both Hurricane Gloria and Superstorm Sandy; however, thanks to our members and their love for our club – the Babylon Yacht Club stands today better than ever on what could arguably be considered one of the most perfect spots on the Bay.

We continue to proudly serve the Great South Bay Community and seek to provide our members with an environment where they can learn, relax and have fun – on and off the water.

I bike ride on the levees at lunch. Lots of good place to ride to. 10 minutes of riding and you feel like you are in the middle of no where. You can also ride to the town of Drawbridge.

Yeah, I ride around there all the time. There's street and dirt paths.

TCK!

BARF is not M4M

Boats probably got stuck there when they stopped dredging out there. They once had plans for making that area a huge cargo harbor but the sediment rate made the dredging too costly.

This part is from memory: It was the floods of, maybe '86 that silted up Alviso Harbor. Then, if I've got it right, the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission (BCDC) made it a pure crystal bitch to get permission to dredge. (Same problem shut down Palo Alto and keeps any deep-keeled vessels out of Redwood Creek[1]) What's new in Alviso is that they are finally dredging the yacht harbor (not the creek where the photos come from). If you follow the railroad dracks on the levees from the east end of the Alviso Marina parking lot, you will eventually reach the ghost town of Drawbridge, where there are still the remains of some fishing shacks. I used to do that on a dirt bike at lunchtime when I worked on North First Street. But note the shiny surfaces on the tracks, they are used by trains. [1] No dredging of Redwood Creek upstream from the Port of Redwood City, coupled with continual deposit of silt from construction upstream means that the houseboats at Docktown settle down into the mud at most low tides. One time in the late '80s a corpse was found pinned face down in the mud half-under a houseboat. Stoned or drunk, maybe, or maybe somebody helped him along. Today, the houseboats on the upper reach of Redwood Creek at Docktown are much more elaborate than when I was a liveaboard across the creek at Peninsula Marina -- when there was a Peninsula Marina.
