Striking, powerful, and with one of the most beautiful interiors of any yacht her size, world-renowned MY SIROCCO - from the hugely respected Dutch Heesen Yachts shipyard – makes for an envy-inducing and wonderful charter option for family and friends. Spread out over three highly luxurious and spacious decks, every guest’s whim is catered for. So-called after the southern Saharan winds, this feeling of warmth and African exotique is encapsulated within the interior design of the yacht, the product of the genius Omega Architects. Every design element has been carefully considered, and the use of the incredible Makassar wood, selection of natural stones, leather, and marble is truly exquisite. Dual transom stairs – with protective gates - lead up from the extendable swim platform onto the spacious main deck, whose enclosed, built-in U-shaped seating makes for a relatively private and very comfortable al fresco dining option. From here, the teak continues forward, leading guests to the bow on the bridge deck – accessed by exterior staircases. Here, there is a U-shaped soft and coffee table and large sunpad, a beautiful area on board where one can enjoy the warming sea breeze while underway, or a private and romantic cocktail to watch the sunset. Also accessed from the main deck aft is the bridge deck aft, again, very spacious, and with a more informal seating area and removable bimini. This deck also doubles up as a large exterior party area, and is also adjacent to the master suite, whose large windows astern provide a 1800 view of the passing seascapes, truly magnificent to wake up to. The sundeck is also expansive: there is a large spa jacuzzi and surrounding sunpads aft, a skylounge amidships – housing the gym where, with all windows open onto the deck and birdseye view, provides a workout to remember – and semi-circular seating forward. This is a yacht of vast entertaining and socialising possibilities. The warm earthy tones of the saloon, and wide beam, instils an instant calming atmosphere. Beautiful wicker sofas surround a large coffee table, where guests can either enjoy the state-of-the-art entertainment centre, part of the 2016 refit, or sit at the fully stocked bar. There is a second, and more informal saloon, on the upper deck, which can be turned into a cinema. All cabins are en suite, and whereas the master suite is unusually on the upper deck, the remaining guest cabins are located below deck; the two VIP staterooms are identical, both with double baths. Rather uniquely, and continuing the African theme, the double and twin cabin have walls lined with bamboo. Each have private airconditioning, AV systems, and WiFi. Each is also uniquely decorated with African artefacts, colours, and patterns, and make for a very impressive sight. Built to ABS class, and with her zero speed stabilizers, MY SIROCCO is a very comfortable cruise – a maximum speed of 26 kts is matched to a cruising speed of 22kts. She also has a garage full of watertoys for guest enjoyment, including: waterskis, wakeboards, snorkelling gear, an inflatable donut and sofa, as well as inflatable slide, and SeaBobs, making the ocean your playground.

Since then, the yacht has been exceptionally well maintained, with constant annual upgrades and improvements. SIROCCO sleeps up to 12 charter guests in 6 luxurious ensuite cabins. The yacht’s interiors are by Omega Architects. Motor yacht SIROCCO’s exceptional crew of 9 are entirely charter focused and regarded as one of the best crews out there. SIROCCO delivers yacht charters of an exceptional quality and a great many guests return to the yacht year after year. Luxury yacht SIROCCO is also a very popular yacht choice for events such as MIPIM yacht charters, Cannes Lions yacht charter and Monaco GP yacht hire.

The weekly charter rate for SIROCCO is €195,000 in July/August, €180,000 other months.

SIROCCO Yacht for Charter

SIROCCO is an exceptional tri-deck yacht launched by Dutch shipyard Heesen in 2006. Boasting African inspired interiors by Omega Architects, SIROCCO offers something truly special for your Mediterranean charter vacation. Family-friendly and luxurious, SIROCCO has been meticulously maintained since her launch with regular upgrades and more comprehensive refits in 2013 and 2017. Her impressive entertainment systems and spaces for socializing make her the perfect yacht for cruising adventures with family and friends.

Earthy yet opulent, SIROCCO’s interiors combine leather, marble, intricate wood detailing and stone to create spaces that are visually interesting and with a tribal feel, particularly in the staterooms. The main salon has comfortable sofas and large wicker chairs adding texture and depth to space. There is formal dining for 12 and a marble-topped bar. There is a dedicated cinema room with large leather ottomans covers in exotic leathers.

Accommodations

SIROCCO’s six staterooms sleep up to 12 guests in opulent comfort. Her full beam, upper deck master is stunning and spacious with 180-degree views thanks to floor-to-ceiling glass doors and windows to each side. There is a comfortable seating area and massive en-suite bathroom with a gorgeous marble tub and gold his-and-hers sinks. On the main deck, the stylish VIP stateroom also has its own seating area, en-suite and marble bathtub. Two further doubles and two twin cabins are located on the lower deck. Each stateroom exemplifies incredible attention to detail in a design that is both intricate and thoughtful.

Luxurious Outdoor Living

Generous deck space across SIROCCO’s three levels allow for intimate gatherings, alfresco dining and sunset cocktails in impeccable style. Aft on the main deck is the place for entertaining with ample lounge seating, dining for 12 and access to the main salon bar. An intimate social atmosphere can be found on the upper deck which also has a beautiful table for alfresco dining. The sundeck is an inviting space for relaxation and lounging with a large Jacuzzi and ample sun pads for soaking up the rays, while a shaded gym allows guests to work out while taking in the stunning views

Entertainment

When it comes to toy, SIROCCO is well-equipped with three tenders, Jet Skis, inflatables and a fun water slide. There is also plenty to do inside while the friendly crew of nine are happy to create fun activities and recommend shore excursions that will help you get the most from every moment.

As the weather heats up on the French Riviera , so does the anticipation for the Monaco Historic Grand Prix and the infamous Formula 1 Grand Prix which both take place in May. Chartering a luxury yacht in the harbour puts you at the heart of the action for both events, and the glamourous parties hosted against the historic architectural background of Monte Carlo.

Cars from the golden era of motor racing between 1930 and 1980 will be tackling the legendary Monaco circuit a few weeks before the challenging Formula 1 race attracts motorsports enthusiasts and the rich and famous alike. Drawn by the thrill of the trackside and the allure of the champagne, visitors crowd the streets, but on board a charter yacht you get to watch the races in comfort while enjoying the amenities and service on board.

Classic Motor yacht NERO

The classic styling of superyacht NERO will no doubt turn heads in any harbour, but particularly in Monaco. Al fresco entertainment space is in abundance and her brand-new interior reflects the care and attention paid during the refit. Conflict in Ukraine’s Donbas: A Visual Explainer

The armed conflict in Eastern Ukraine started in 2014. Between then and early 2022, it had already killed over 14,000 people. 

On 24 February 2022, Russia attacked Ukraine on several fronts beginning a major invasion. Ukraine's president declared martial law, vowing stiff resistance, as Western powers condemned Moscow's actions. Crisis Group will be covering this crisis in depth as it develops [ see our Ukraine page ]. The visual explainer below focuses not on the full-scale escalation that began on 24 February, but on fighting in the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine that began in 2014. This provides crucial background for understanding what is happening today.

The armed conflict in Eastern Ukraine started in 2014. Between then and early 2022, it had already  killed over 14,000 people. Over the course of eight years, Ukrainian government forces fought  Russian-backed separatists for control over much of the two heavily industrialised regions of Donetsk and Luhansk, also known as Donbas. Fierce battles in 2014-2015 ended with one third of the regions' territory, its most urbanised part, occupied by two Russian proxy statelets, the  self-described Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics. Between September 2014 and February 2015, Russia, Ukraine, France and Germany signed several iterations of the so-called Minsk agreements, which eventually stopped the forward movement of troops and reduced fighting significantly. But the agreements were never implemented, and the fighting transformed into a trench war, with roughly 75,000 troops facing off along a 420-km-long front line cutting through densely populated areas. The war ruined the area's economy and heavy industries, forced millions to relocate and turned the conflict zone into one of the world’s most mine-contaminated areas.

Some months saw heavier fighting, and more deaths and injuries than others. Geographically, casualties tended to be concentrated where the sides were especially close to key infrastructure, to each other, or both. You can hover over the heat map and click on individual communities to get a sense of how casualties fluctuated over time, and where they occurred most often.

Civilian casualty data in this heat map includes those killed and injured by live fire – in artillery or mortar strikes, or by bullet wounds from rifles or heavy machine guns. It also includes victims of landmines or explosive remnants of war, as well as those who died of natural causes queuing at checkpoints to cross into or from Ukrainian government-controlled territory. The intensity of the fighting differs from month to month. Our way to measure it is to rely on numbers of explosions as recorded by the Special Monitoring Mission of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE SMM) on a daily basis. The SMM was the only international observer mission allowed to collect information from all sides, and its data, while incomplete, remains the best available.

To illustrate the correlation between diplomatic efforts and the dynamics of warfare, we provide the dates of ceasefire recommitments, overlaid on this chart showing the rise and decline of explosions over time. The number of reported explosions often decreased after ceasefires, only to rise again in the absence of a durable settlement.

In 2021-22 two Russian military build-ups along the Ukrainian border foreshadowed an escalation, one in March and April 2021 and a second one in December 2021 through February 2022. Both these phases also saw an increase in reports that the OSCE Missions were denied access to the war zone by  armed formations.  This means that with the invasion drawing closer, the visibility of what was going on in the Donbas conflict zone declined. Eventually, on 24 February 2022, the day of the invasion, the OSCE announced it would evacuate its Mission. On 8 March, all of its international staff had left Ukraine. Local  Mission members will remain in administrative functions in anticipation of the Mission’s revival, but the OSCE has suspended its reporting activities. https://www.osce.org/special-monitoring-mission-to-ukraine/513424

The decision of the Russian government to recognize the independence of the two separatist republics on 21 February 2022 effectively put an end to discussions of Minsk implementation. Three days later, Russia invaded Ukraine, heralding a new phase of the war with a scope of violence far beyond what is depicted here.

Donetsk and Luhansk: What you should know about the ‘republics’

Who has followed Russia in recognising the controversial, Moscow-backed statelets in Ukraine? And what is life like there?

Kyiv, Ukraine – Moscow-backed separatists have controlled the southeastern Ukrainian regions of Donetsk and Luhansk, known collectively as Donbas, for almost eight years.

But Russian President Vladimir Putin recognised them only on Monday, paving the way for the official presence of Russian troops in the rebel-controlled areas that occupy about a third of Donetsk and Luhansk.

So far, only Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua and Syria have joined Putin in recognising Donetsk and Luhansk – along with breakaway Georgian provinces of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. They all did so also on Monday.

The central question is whether Russia would recognise them in their current borders. Should it decide to help the rebels “restore” their statelets to the original borders, it may spell a large-scale war between Moscow and Kyiv.

At the moment, Russia will recognise “the borders, where the leadership of the DNR and the LNR are executing their authority,” Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko told the Interfax News Agency on Tuesday.

But the foreign ministry also said on Tuesday that the issue of the borders is yet to be resolved.

While Ukraine and the West try to avoid war, other questions loom.

What are the roots of the region’s separatism? What has kept these areas alive since 2014? And what is their future?

Neo-Stalinism

A 13.5 metre-tall statue of Soviet founder Vladimir Lenin still dominates the main square in Donetsk, the capital of the eponymous breakaway region in southeastern Ukraine.

And the constitution adopted by Lenin’s successor, Josef Stalin, has been restored by the Moscow-backed separatist leaders of Donetsk and neighbouring Luhansk after they broke away from the central government in 2014.

This constitution prescribes the death penalty for a number of crimes, making the separatist “People’s Republics” – and authoritarian Belarus nearby – Europe’s only homes to capital punishment.

After almost eight years of existence, the “republics” are understood to have evolved into totalitarian, North Korea-like statelets.

It is near impossible for foreigners to enter the areas. Ukrainians can only visit if they have relatives in Donetsk and Luhansk, and would have to cross into Russia first, which takes about 30 hours and costs $100 – a journey that also involves bribing officials at times. Residents need a Soviet-era residency registration.

In the statelets, secret police and “loyal” residents monitor every word, phone call and text message.

Dissidents or businessmen who refuse to “donate” their assets to the “needs of the People’s Republic” have been thrown in “cellars”, or dozens of makeshift concentration camps, without trial.

“It looks like the 1930s in the Soviet Union, a classic gulag,” Stanislav Aseyev, a publicist who was kidnapped in 2017 in Donetsk and was sentenced by a separatist “court” to 15 years in jail for “espionage”, told Al Jazeera.

For almost two years, he was incarcerated and tortured in these “cellars” until separatists swapped him and dozens of other prisoners in 2017.

Thousands of others were tortured and abused in the “cellars”, according to rights groups and witnesses. The grave human rights abuses make Donetsk and Luhansk far worse than today’s Russia, an international human rights advocate said.

“The cellars where prisoners are held in Donetsk, and the widespread use of torture, are among the most obvious human rights issues,” said Ivar Dale, a senior policy adviser with the Norwegian Helsinki Committee, a human rights watchdog group.

But there are much wider problems such as civil and political rights, he said.

“You could say that the political repression in Russia is doubly felt in Donetsk and Luhansk and other areas effectively under control of the Putin regime,” Dale told Al Jazeera.

Rust-belt ruins

These tendencies have gone hand in hand with economic degradation.

The living standards are “many times, if not dozens of times worse than in pre-war 2013”, said Aseyev, 32, who now lives in Kyiv and has published a novel about the events in Donetsk.

This regress looks even more staggering considering Donetsk’s and Luhansk’s not-so-ancient history. The cities were founded by two Brits.

Englishman Charles Gascoigne built a metal factory in what is now Luhansk in 1795, shortly after czarist Russia annexed Crimea and eastern Ukraine from the Crimean Khanate, a mostly-Muslim vassal of Ottoman Turkey.

Decades later, in 1869, Welshman John Hughes started a steel plant and a coal mine in what is now Donetsk, and the city was named after him – Hughesovka or Yuzovka – until the Soviet era.

The birth and rapid growth of both cities followed the czarist government’s drive to develop the immense coal and iron ore deposits of what is now eastern Ukraine.

Communist Moscow further spurred the region’s development, and tens of thousands of ethnic Russians settled there, making urban areas almost exclusively Russian-speaking.

Coal and mines grew deeper next to hillocks made of spent ore, and foundries, chemical and power plants dotted the region.

The political heyday of Donetsk began in 2010, when its native Viktor Yanukovych became Ukraine’s president – and brought cohorts of his cronies to Kyiv.

They tried to wrestle control of Ukraine’s politics and economy – but triggered months-long protests that began in November 2013 and ended in February 2014, when the Ukrainian parliament voted to remove Yanukovych from office.

The protests are known in Ukraine as the Revolution of Dignity – but Russian President Vladimir Putin still calls them a “coup”.

‘Russian spring’

In the czarist era, the region was known as Novorossiya – or New Russia – and the Kremlin would use the name in 2014 as it proclaimed the “Russian Spring” or “liberation” of Russian-speaking regions in eastern and southern Ukraine.

But pro-Russian rallies and uprisings in Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, and Odesa, its largest seaport on the Black Sea, failed.

However, thousands of Russian volunteers flocked to Donetsk and Luhansk to aid separatist militias – while many locals were ecstatic about the “Russian Spring”.

“Putin will come and restore order here,” one of their supporters, a rotund minibus driver named Valerii, told this reporter in April 2014 in Donetsk.

But four months later, after the separatists tried to confiscate his minibus, he locked his apartment, loaded the bus with his most valuable belongings, and left for Kyiv.

‘Price tag’

Even though Ukraine barred any economic ties to the separatist regions, they still exist – and even involve top politicians.

Pro-Western President Petro Poroshenko, who came to power after the Revolution of Dignity, admitted that he channeled government funds worth tens of millions of dollars in exchange for Donetsk coal in the winter of 2014-2015 because otherwise “half of Ukraine could have frozen”.

But Russia still had to bankroll the separatist provinces spending billions of dollars a year.

So, what are Moscow’s economic goals in Donbas?

“Very simple – to lower the price tag of maintaining the occupied territories,” Aleksey Kusch, a Kyiv-based analyst, told Al Jazeera.

To achieve that, Russia may want to remove the middlemen who pocketed the lion’s share of profits from the export of coal and steel and the delivery of humanitarian aid that was immediately resold on the black market.

“They kept up to 70 percent of the profits,” Kushch said.
