Seafarer 30
- Add to quote
I looked at a very nice Seafarer 30 over the weekend. Does anyone have any thoughts or comments about this boat. Before seeing it, I had never even heard of them.
Does anyone know anything about these boats?
Judging by the lack of response, apparently not, Jotun. Ive heard of them, and have seen drawings, but think there are so few around that there's no real consensus on their quality or characteristics. Sorry.
I believe that each previously owned boat should be viewed as an individual case. The only thing that certain models truly have in common are the original design. After that many things happen to the boat regarding upgrades and or the lack of maintenance. I would strongly suggest that you get a copy of Don Casey's Sailboat Maintenance Manual and follow his guidelines for doing your own personal survey. Then if the boat still fits your needs and looks good for the price, hire a good surveyor to look it over.
I'd also recommend getting your hands on the Practical Sailor two-volume boat buying guide. It has the specifications for the boats, as well as owner interviews and known pros and cons specific to the various boats.
I don't have any personal experience owning a 30 foot Seafarer yet, but I owned a 1983 Seafarer 23 that was a McCurdy and Rhodes design. We absolutely loved that boat. It was very stable reasonably fast and well layed out to our thinking. The construction seemed pretty good compaired to most of the production boats that I work on. They made three completely different 30 models, the most common is the McCurdy and Rhodes designed Swiftsure. They were apparently made from the mid seventies until they stopped production in 85. As near as I can remember the other popular boat from the sixties was a Bill Tripp design and was a good sailor, well built and stunning Eye Candy to my way of thinking. The other was the 30R I am not sure who designed it, but it looks like a little different Tripp design to me. I am told that the R stood for racing version although I haven't been able to confirm that information. I spent the day on one of these several years ago and was pretty impressed with how well it was put together. I just sold my Morgan and am currently looking for a late model Seafarer, although we haven't decided whether we want a 26 or a 30. I want the smaller boat for ease of handling and the wife wants the bigger boat for more room. Assuming that you are looking at one of the later model thirties, make certain that you take a close look at the rudder. The bracket at the bottom ofthe rudder is bad about breaking due to electrolisis. The only other thing is that they have an interior liner that makes it a bit tough to mount anythying on the deck and make rewiring something of a pain. The other side of that is that it is a breeze to keep clean. Good luck on your search Dirt

The fix isn't the end of the world type thing. I heard one guy say that he had a boat yard fix his and it cost about $ 850.00. You may want to consider joining the Seafarer email list that is available on this site. They are a lively bunch and are a wealth of information about this kind of thing. The last time that I heard them reference the this fix, they were discussing having several of the pieces in question made up and selling them at cost to other Seafarer owners as we are all in the same boat more or less. Again this is not a reason to turn the boat down, but it is unquestionably something that needs to be looked at. It may well be that the current owner has already done the fix. Regards Dirt

Review of Seafarer 30
Basic specs..
The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all.
Unknown keel type
The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 1.43 - 1.53 meter (4.69 - 4.99 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.
Sailing characteristics
This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.
What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?
The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 6.4 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.
The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Seafarer 30 is about 119 kg/cm, alternatively 666 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 119 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 666 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.
Sailing statistics
This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.
What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?
Maintenance
When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 21m 2 (226 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

Found a nice looking S30 for sale in my area (chesapeake bay). A 1984, for $14k. Looks reasonably clean. Any thoughts on this model? Sailing characteristics? Esp for light wind.. "livability" for coastal crusing? Anything to look for if I go check it out? thanks
Did you ever get any answers to this question? I am interested in one also. Thanks

@tciavola welcome to SBO forum. You indicated an interest in a Hunter 40. A Seafarer 30 would be a very different boat. have you thought about what you want a boat to do for you? Or are you just chasing costs. A cheap boat that does not fit your needs ends up being an expensive adventure that you throw money at, never finding satisfaction.

Seafarer Yachts
Seafarer Fiberglass Yachts, Inc., of Huntington, New York began as the US distributor for the SWIFTSURE, MERIDIAN, and RANGER, all designed by Philip Rhodes. These were first built at the Amsterdam Shipyard, Inc., by G. DeVries Lentsch, in the late 1950’s. In 1965, however, all production moved to a new plant in Huntington, NY. At around this same time, production of a Bill Tripp designed 31 footer began. A Tripp 39 footer was later added to the group. During the ‘70’s, most designs were from McCurdy & Rhodes. These were probably the largest group of models produced, including another popular SWIFTSURE. Other yachts included 48 and 23 footers by Sparkman and Stephens. Seafarer also built some of the 31’ ATLANTIC Class sloops, designed by Starling Burgess. They also offered many of their models in kit form. No longer in business.

The original S&S design lists LOA as 22'. KESTREL seems to be an earlier name that Seafarer gave to this design. By 1970 a boat with this same profile was being promoted by Seafarer as the SAIL'N TRAIL 23 OLYMPIC. Further adding to the confusion is the later, American built SEAFARER 23, which is a completely different design.
