Did you know?

From their beginnings in 1965, over 17,000 Princess Yachts have been manufactured. Now, they build an amazing average of 270 yachts a year. This means that every few days another yacht is completed which is incredible!

Over 21 miles of cable go into a 40 M yacht. If you laid the cable along the road, it would take you all the way from Plymouth to Totnes.

In the furniture factory, the team processes 500 sheets of wood a day. The sheets of walnut or oak are produced in Holland and the trees they are taken from are hand-chosen for Princess.

Around 7 times each month, roads in Plymouth are closed between 2.30am – 4.30am so the yachts can be pulled around the roundabouts and down streets in the wrong direction!

The biggest boat has only 13 mm height clearance under the Marsh Mills flyover and in warm weather the tyres need to be deflated to make it under and through.

Princess Yachts own 4 police cars which are driven by police officers (on non-emergency duty) to escort the boats during the early morning moves.

Princess Yachts

Princess Yachts are famous for building some of the world’s finest and most luxurious yachts, which they manufacture at their  5 different sites in Plymouth and sell all over the world.  The company is extremely proud of their Plymouth heritage – their logo includes the words “Crafted in Plymouth”. 80-85% of everything you see on a Princess Yacht has been made in-house by the company’s Plymouth teams.

“Where there’s warm weather and water, you will find Princess Yachts. There’s always a carefully crafted part of Plymouth floating around some of the most beautiful places in the world”   Antony Sheriff, Executive Chairman, Princess Yachts

Princess Yachts is also honoured to be the first luxury yacht manufacturer to officially partner with the Marine Conservation Society. Since 2016 they have worked together to support marine environments, preserving reefs and sea life for present and future generations.

Typical job roles include: Marine Engineering, Fabrication/Welding, Carpentry, Computer Aided Design,Composites, HR, Learning and Development and Finance

LUXURY MOTOR YACHTS AND SUPER YACHTS

Princess Yachts craft a range of highly developed luxury yachts, which are said to be the envy of the yacht manufacturing and retail community.

At 40 metres long, the Princess 40M is the company’s largest yacht to date and is classed as a super-yacht. It has the luxury price tag of £18 million! Across the yacht’s three decks, there are sunbathing hideaways, a spa bath, dining areas and even a walk-in beach club.

Click here to take a 360 tour of the Princess 40M and see the amazing craftsmanship of the Plymouth yacht building teams.

The M Class super-yachts are constructed in one of Plymouth’s most historically important areas at South Yard, which is a former naval yard dating back to the 17th century and where the city’s dockyard originally began.

CAREFULLY DESIGNED INTERIORS

As you can see here, the Y85 caters for relaxation as well as speed. The flybridge has a fantastic deck for enjoying the sights and sounds of the ocean and marinas while the saloon creates an elegant space for seating and dining.

There is a careful design process for every element of a Princess Yacht. Each newly designed yacht goes through a Mock-Up stage. This is a one-to-one scale replication of the final yacht to test exactly how the new layout works, to check head heights, door way functionality, and how the furniture and materials will feel in the space. You can watch a film about the Mock-Up Stage here.

NEW PERFORMANCE SPORTS YACHTS

The R Class is the brand new range of performance sports yachts by Princess. The R35 pictured here, is a revolutionary yacht which was designed in conjunction with Ben Ainslie Racing Technologies (yes – Ben Ainslie – one of the most successful Olympics sailors of all time!) and legendary Italian car designers, Pininfarina.

This yacht can reach a top speed of 50 knots. Only the fastest swimming fish in the world could keep up with the R Class yachts.

To confuse the eye and help conceal its design until its official launch, the prototype R35 was actually covered in dazzle camouflage which was created by Plymouth College of Art student, Katie Sheppard. Take a look at the sea trial of the prototype R35 in its dazzle camouflage design here.

Princess Yachts eyes Plymouth freeport as site for new factory

UK's largest luxury yacht manufacturer needs more capacity and more staff after seeing order book reach US$1bn

Luxury boat maker Princess Yachts wants to build another factory in Plymouth’s freeport area so it can produce more vessels, employ more people and fulfil a US$1bn order book.

The manufacturer is considering a new production facility at its South Yard base, in Devonport, which is included in Plymouth’s £50m tax-break freeport area.

It is early days and no plans have yet been drawn but the firm and Plymouth City Council have confirmed a new factory is very much on their radar.

And Princess Yachts is just one of several businesses, including some from abroad, which are eyeing the freeport, to be called the Plymouth and South Devon Freezone.

An outline business plan is due to be submitted to the Government before the end of November, and if all goes smoothly a full business case will be approved in Spring 2022, unlocking £25m in Government funds, which will be matched locally.

The Freezone could be up and running by summer of 2022 and would include sites at Devonport's South Yard, Langage Energy Zone and the as yet unbuilt Sherford Business Park next to the A38.

It would create space for businesses to import goods and materials, add value to them by manufacture, and export them, benefiting from simpler planning procedures, infrastructure funding, and lower taxes.

Caroline Cozens, strategic projects manager for Plymouth City Council, outlined the freeport process to about 100 construction industry bosses at a Meet the City Buyers event, called to brief the industry on major Plymouth building projects, at City College Plymouth.

She said: “We are getting great interest from the market that wants to invest. Local businesses wanting to expand and foreign direct investment in the city.”

And she said: “Princess Yachts is looking at a new factory in that location and we are working with them to bring that forward.”

Princess Yachts already has several production bases in Plymouth, including at South Yard, where the X Class super flybridge yachts are constructed. The former naval yard, which dates back to the 17th Century, is earmarked as part of the freeport.

Paul Turner, Princess Yachts’ HR director, said Princess Yachts was considering a new factory in the location so it could make more vessels and employ more people.

He said: “There is a lot of space there, so a potential opportunity for future capacity there. An opportunity for increased capacity and headcount.”

He said the plan was in a very early stage and would need funding and planning permission but said: “The reality is we need additional capacity. And it's about an opportunity in Plymouth to create more jobs.”

He said the freezone would provide a “fantastic opportunity” for Princess Yachts, particularly as the firm prides itself on making every vessel in Plymouth.

“Our strapline is ‘crafted in Plymouth’,” he said. “So we have to build everything in Plymouth, and we are proud of that.”

In October, the company revealed a “record-setting commercial performance” with sales surpassing production, with almost all output through to the end of 2022, and more than 60% of 2023 production, already covered by orders.

This year it has already sold 20 of its flagship Superfly X95 and has 57 orders for the new Y72 model which launched in the summer. The company is now poised for further growth with the new Y95, X80,and V50 already in production, as well as five further new model launches by the end of 2022.

And, despite being in a Covid-19 recovery phase, intensive recruitment continues with increased investment in skills training and award-winning apprenticeship programmes.

The firm, which employs about 3,200 people in Plymouth, faced challenges from the Covid-19 pandemic and the ongoing supply chain issues affecting the UK and turnover and profits dipped in 2020 as the company was affected by a temporary Covid-related closure. But it bounced back strongly and sales have grown to the highest levels in company history, with an order book exceeding US$1bn.

Plymouth was named as a recipient of one of the country’s eight new freeports by Chancellor Rishi Sunak in his March 2021 Budget. It meant Plymouth could benefit from a £100m investment and employment boom, with an estimated 1,000 jobs created in the first two year. Plymouth was named as a freeport alongside East Midlands Airport, Felixstowe and Harwich, the Humber region, the Liverpool City Region, Solent, Thames and Teesside, but it must have its case approved by ministers.

Plymouth City Council has been working with Devon County Council and South Hams District Council on the outline business case for the Plymouth and South Devon Freezone. Ms Cozens said the council had been talking with key stakeholders and landowners, particularly at Langage, where the local authority owns significant land in the Freezone area, but not all of it.

Written by Chelsea Smith

Plymouth based Princess Yachts International has won financial backing from the Government’s Regional Growth Fund (RGF) for a major investment in Plymouth’s Devonport dockyard.

Plans to create a world leading boat building facility at the company’s South Yard site were approved by Plymouth City Council last year, following which the company sought a Government contribution to help secure approval for this major investment from its French parent company.

Princess Yachts receives Government support for new manufacturing facility in Plymouth

The new production site will be used to build Princess M Class yachts, a range of 100-foot plus vessels developed to meet the growing global demand for craft of this size. The new facility is planned to be operational by early 2013 and will create or secure over 1,000 jobs both directly and indirectly in the wider Plymouth economy.

Princess Yachts exports 90 per cent of its production and has built a global reputation for quality and craftsmanship. It is already Plymouth’s second largest private sector employer, with just under 2,000 employees, and supports several hundred supply chain jobs.

Last month Princess Yachts completed the purchase from Defence Estates of a freehold interest in the 18-acre South Yard site within the historic Devonport Naval Base.

Chris Gates, Managing Director of Princess Yachts, said:

“I am delighted that the Government has decided to back our investment in a new production facility to meet the global demand for larger vessels. This recognises the fantastic work being achieved by our company as it competes on a global stage from its Plymouth base. We are extremely grateful for the local support given to us during the application process, including our local MP’s, the leaders of the Council and the numerous business and community leaders, all of whom clearly recognise the significant contribution we bring to the City of Plymouth as a strong local employer.”

Vivien Pengelly, Leader of Plymouth City Council, said:

“We are delighted that Princess Yachts has won support from the Regional Growth Fund. The company is one of the biggest employers in Plymouth and is a local success story. Their ambitious plans will kick start the regeneration of South Yard within Devonport dockyard and create a focus for excellence in marine engineering.”

Princess entered the superyacht market this year with the launch to wide acclaim of the Princess 32M long range cruising yacht at the London Boat Show in January 2011. The company is already working on the new flagship Princess 40M, a 130-foot tri-deck yacht to be launched in 2012 and with a strong forward order book the company is confident of further growth in this market.

Princess Yachts: Advanced Technology

Tuesday 10th December 2019

The sun appears to be shining at Princess Yachts. After announcing record financial results for 2018, with orders worth more than £700m, the firm’s product development cycle has been remarkably prolific. Having already made a strong move toward fresh markets with the radical new R35, 2019 has seen the release of the V78, Y85, F45 and F50, plus the S62 and S66, as well as the formal unveilings of both the V55 and the prodigiously spacious X95. It’s a compelling illustration of the company’s success – and while the lovely artisan romance of Princess’s painstaking in-house approach to design and build has certainly been at the heart of that, there’s no doubt that technological advances have also played a very major part.

Strength and lightness

Princess runs a variety of dedicated departments across seven manufacturing facilities in and around Plymouth – and one of the most vital of these is the mould shop. This specialised department enables Princess to build its own plugs for each new design and to create its own components using a sophisticated resin infusion process. While the company originally adopted resin infusion in 2005, it is now applying it on everything from the R35 right up to the X95 and beyond, and the implications of that are huge…

The fact that the process is controlled by computer and put under vacuum means that the fibre to resin ratio is always exact. That ensures a stiffer, stronger, more accurate structure, as well as a cleaner, more perfect finish. It also uses far less material, which makes each yacht lighter, faster and more efficient – and the fact that it minimises the need for cumbersome stiffening beams means that designers are able to take advantage of the extra volume with larger, brighter, more versatile living spaces.

With the emergence of the new R35, Princess is also now beginning to take those principles a touch further with the use of carbon fibre, not just as a stiffening supplement but as a building material in its own right. According to Princess CEO, Anthony Sheriff, the use of carbon fibre instead of fibreglass shaved around half a metric tonne from the R35, while also adding significant extra stiffness to the boat’s structure. The R35’s fully carbon fibre construction might have been a world first for a production sports yacht, but it seems reasonable to assume that we will see plenty more of this from Princess in the future.

Uprated interactivity

Third-party technology has also become an important element of the Princess experience, with a range of optional features now available at the point of specifying your new yacht. The company’s Garmin chart plotter and radar screens use interactive streaming which means that, if you buy the latest Garmin watch, you can control your navigation equipment from your wrist. The company’s yachts all now have Wi-Fi, and you can also have CCTV surveillance on board, so you can dial in and keep an eye on things from home. And for even greater control and confidence, Siren Marine’s ‘Connected Boat’ technology enables owners to remotely monitor all kinds of boat-related issues – from checking that the fridges are still on and the shore power connected to ensuring that their batteries are properly charged and their bilges are dry. It means that, when you turn up to use your boat, you can have the utmost faith that it’s in sound operational condition.

While it’s easy to imagine that a classically understated marque like Princess might keep the rate and scale of technological integration on board its yachts quite low and measured, Leon McGregor, Technician at Princess Motor Yacht Sales, insists that Princess owners are thoroughly prepared to embrace such things. “If you look at a top-of-the-line S-Class Mercedes or a Rolls Royce Phantom, which is what our owners are driving, these technologies are already there. Our customers are already enjoying the benefits of fully integrated suites of smart equipment, so nobody is scared by it. On the contrary, everybody wants it – and there’s no reason why yachts at the upper echelons of the market shouldn’t cater for that.”

A test platform with a purpose

The most conspicuous exponent of Princess’s modern technical prowess is the R35. When the boat was launched in September 2018, it was designed to expand the company’s reach to a broader audience – not just by undercutting the smallest craft in the fleet by five feet but by helping illustrate just how innovative the builder could be.

It featured hydrodynamic input from Ben Ainslie Racing Technologies, aerodynamics inspired by Formula 1 and styling input from Pininfarina SpA. It also became the world’s first production sports yacht fully constructed from carbon fibre and it used a foiling system that altered the way the technology was applied. While traditional foils aim to increase running efficiency by lifting the hull free of the water, the Princess Active Foil System (AFS) uses a pair of foils that adjust automatically in collaboration with the hull, optimising the boat’s running attitude both in terms of lateral heel and longitudinal pitch to reduce drag, increase speed and optimise handling.

Despite the fact that AFS is the leisure market’s first active foiling system, the results have been astonishing. With up to 27 adjustments per second, the hull can be perfectly tuned to changing conditions, not just increasing cruising range, but reducing the boat’s environmental impact and radically improving passenger comfort. By ensuring a near perfect running attitude, the boat reduces vibration, improves stability and delivers a drier, more refined and more comfortable ride. And because Princess’s extensive hydrodynamic research has been supplemented by carefully considered aerodynamics, the R35 also channels air over its various surfaces to optimise laminar flow and reduce the turbulent low-pressure zone at the stern, which can so often suck spray back into the boat.

The core caveat: people v progress

As materials, processes and operating systems become ever more advanced, there is a line to be trodden at Princess Yachts. While some builders are happy to associate themselves very closely with the cold, hard efficiencies of technical ingenuity, Princess continues to take great care of the human element of its character. Its reputation is built on the quality of its craftsmen; of people who have grown up in boat building and who care about their work. And today, it remains the human story, as much as the technical rigour, that makes a Princess yacht special. That cultural provenance is likely to remain at the heart of the work Princess does, however ambitious the advancement of technological methods enables the company to become.

Sailing yachts like Mike Lynch's are 'unsinkable bodies', CEO of boat manufacturing firm says

Bayesian superyacht which sank off Italy is an "unsinkable" vessel, Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, said.

Vessels like Mike Lynch's stricken superyacht are "unsinkable", according to the chief executive of the firm which makes and sells them.

Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, told Sky News there are no flaws with the design and construction of the Bayesian superyacht which capsized in a storm off the coast of Porticello, Sicily, on Monday.

Five bodies were found by divers on Wednesday - taking the number of confirmed dead to six.

The Italian Sea Group also owns the firm that built British tech tycoon Mr Lynch's Bayesian, and Mr Costantino said the vessels "are the safest in the most absolute sense".

News of the sinking left CEO of The Italian Sea Group Giovanni Costantino in ‘sadness on the one hand and disbelief on the other’.

"Being the manufacturer of Perini [boats], I know very well how the boats have always been designed and built," he said.

"And as Perini is a sailing ship... sailing ships are renowned to be the safest ever."

He said their structure and keel made them "unsinkable bodies".

Mr Costantino said news of the sinking "put me in a state of sadness on one side and of disbelief on the other".

"This incident sounds like an unbelievable story, both technically and as a fact," he said.

It is understood Italian prosecutors investigating the incident are continuing to hold interviews with the survivors.
