The Outbound 46 has a well-deserved reputation as the gold standard of blue water cruising sailboats. Designed by renowned naval architect Carl Schumacher, built to the highest standards and continually refined over more than 20 years in production, the Outbound 46 will take you comfortably across any ocean. Her long waterline, moderate beam, high righting moment and efficient foils provide exceptional sailing performance. At the same time, her solid fiberglass hull is robust and safe, well reinforced by strong structural members that are bonded to the hull. Ballast is integral to the fin keel (no bolts) with a deep sump. Water and fuel tanks are built in fiberglass below the cabin sole – maximizing capacity (190 fuel and 200 water) and ideally distributing weight. Her elegant hand-crafted American cherry interior features a semi-raised salon that is only three easy steps from the cockpit. Natural light from large windows floods the salon and galley spaces, and good ventilation is provided by hatches and opening ports. Her master stateroom is forward with a walk around island berth and quarter cabin aft provides comfortable accommodations for owners and guests. Systems installations and access are prioritized, with the famous Outbound 46 “garage” with work bench in the starboard quarter.
Turtle’s Back (hull 66) is the most highly optimized Outbound 46 available. She has only seen light use in Pacific Northwest waters since new – logging only 105 hours on her Yanmar diesel. Her cabin sole varnish gleams, systems show virtually no wear, and compartments behind the scenes are clean and tidy. See detailed photos of these areas in this listing. Turtle’s Back must be seen to be appreciated.

Turtle’s Back interior is beautifully finished in American cherry with satin varnish. All hatches and screens are finished this way as well. The cabin sole is thick teak and holly over plywood and has been finished in high gloss two part Awlgrip for durability. Locking drawers and cabinets can be secured. Large salon windows fill the living areas with natural light. Opening ports and hatches with screens provide excellent ventilation. There are plenty of handholds to make passage easy and safer when the seas kick up or you are heeling over. She can sleep six comfortably in two separate cabins and the salon.
The master stateroom is located forward, featuring a walk around island berth. This berth hinges up to reveal storage below, with additional drawers below the aft end. Sliding door lockers run along the hull sides, with a shelf below. There is a hanging locker aft and to starboard. The head is located to port, with a sink outside of the compartment in the stateroom just forward.
The main salon is aft of the master stateroom. There is a seven foot long U-shaped dinette to port with a drop leaf table with a straight settee to port. The mid-section of the backrest of the starboard settee drops down to become a small table perfect for playing cards or having a drink. There is a wine cabinet behind this table. Bookshelves with adjacent lockers are above and behind both settees. The settee coverts into a generous sea berth when underway. The battery bank and inverter/charger is accessed beneath the starboard settee. Cushions are covered in ultra-suede fabric in excellent condition.
The U-shaped galley is located to port and aft of the main salon and includes Corian counters, double stainless sink and Scanvik faucets. There is a dish storage rack above the sinks. There are two large access hatches to the fridge and freezer on the port side as well as a three-burner gimballed Force 10 stove with oven. There is generous storage including a pantry with generous open storage.
Across from the galley to starboard is the navigation station . Situated adjacent to the companionway, the navigator will be in close proximity to those on watch allowing communication with the helm. The top opening chart table easily accommodates all the necessary navigation equipment. There are drawers and lockers for tools, winch handles and binoculars. The chartplotter screen is here as well as VHF and SSB radios, electrical and tank monitors and generator controls. The electrical panel is a short reach across the passageway beneath the starboard side of the galley counter and hinges open to allow full access to the back for service.
The guest stateroom is located aft of the galley. This is a comfortable quarterberth with hatches and ports providing light and ventilation including into the cockpit. Lockers are above and outboard of the berth with additional storage in cabinets along the aft bulkhead. There is a large hanging locker a bookshelf as well as two drawers below the berth.
The aft head is to starboard. This is the ideal location near the companionway for access to the on watch crew or storage of foul weather gear. Molded surfaces that are easy to clean and impervious to moisture. A stainless steel sink is set into a counter forward and there is a mirror above. The Raritan electric head is outboard. A separate shower stall is located aft.
The garage is accessed via the shower stall. This space features a work bench with storage, Splendide washer/dryer and excellent access to the generator and other systems. The starboard cockpit locker lid opens to give this space standing headroom and ventilation. A door in the bulkhead aft allows access to the lazarette and steering gear.

Hull and Deck
The Outbound 46 design was conceived for serious offshore cruising. Each Outbound Yacht is constructed of 100% hand-laid fiberglass with a massive system of stringers, longitudinals and bulkheads that are carefully bonded directly to the hull while still in the mold. Laminates are increased in high stress areas and in the bow and bilge for added strength. Bi-axial cloth adds to the overall impact resistance and outer layers of vinylester resin protect against osmotic blistering. Ashland Maz-Guard premium ISO-NPGH gelcoat is used to protect the laminate and provide a superior gloss for years. To eliminate keel bolt troubles, the hull and keel are molded as a single lamination. The hull is coated with five layers of Interlux 2000 barrier coat before bottom paint. After the deck is through bolted and sealed to the hull with 3M 5200 sealant, the bulkheads are fiberglassed on their entire perimeter, not just screwed in place. All furniture is then carefully bonded to the hull adding to the structural support system.
The deck is cored with balsa and vacuum bagged with the core materials removed and replaced with solid fiberglass and stainless backing plates in critical areas. There are removable overheard access panels throughout to get to deck hardware. Pushpit, pulpit and mast rails are oversized 1.5” stainless tubing. Lifelines are taller than average at 30”, with a solid handrail leading from the boarding gates aft. There are stainless handrails on the cabin top and padeyes to connect jacklines and harnesses. Mooring cleats are 12” stainless, suitable for a large ocean-going yacht. There are ten stainless steel opening ports and eight Lewmar hatches. Four dorade vents and Nicro solar fans provide plenty of ventilation.
The cockpit is a safe and comfortable place whether driving the boat in a gale or resting in a placid anchorage. The long seats provide plenty of room for entertaining, sleeping outside or sunbathing. Most importantly, the cockpit is deep and narrow with seat backs ergonomically designed for maximum comfort. For safety and comfort, the Outbound 46 was designed to make moving about the cockpit and cabin as easy as possible. The three step companionway allows easy transit from cockpit to salon without having to use a steep and long ladder. A factory installed hard dodger protects the cockpit. Lights are installed in the dodger overhead and two hatches provide ventilation. A walk thru transom with boarding platform and fold down swim ladder make access to the dinghy and water easy. And there is a built in liferaft storage container accessible to the cockpit and platform.
Excellent stowage and load carrying capacity are designed into the Outbound’s hull and deck. 200 gallons of water and 190 gallons of fuel are stored in integral fiberglass tanks beneath the cabin sole which aids in upwind sailing performance and opens space under the settees and bunks for other stowage. There is a large foredeck locker at the bow, separated from the cabin by a watertight bulkhead and accessed from on deck. The locker also offers standup access to the anchor locker and makes stowing an asymmetrical spinnaker a breeze. In addition to the forward locker there is a giant cockpit lazarette, a large propane locker and access to the “garage” aft of the after head.

Outbound 56, BAREFOOT
Han Sheng Yachts, Outbound 56 Built 2019; commissioned 2020 / €1,090,000, + VAT
Broker’s Comments
Outbound 56 BAREFOOT – otherwise known as a highly customised Hylas 56, is a powerful and capable German Frers design built by Han Sheng Yachts, with sparkling sailing and a superb layout for long distance cruising. Of recent build, she was completed in the last quarter of 2019 and commissioned in 2020.
After taking delivery of the yacht, this owner decided to make many upgrades and improvements and so a work list was drawn up and this work was carried out in 2021 – 22 by Nautor’s Swan Global Service in Badalona on the mainland of Spain. They were selected because of their capability working on high quality yachts like Nautor’s Swan.
There is a full refit report available on request.
Outbound 56 BAREFOOT is virtually a new yacht with the advantage that she has had many new boat niggles sorted post-delivery. Her owner cruised her 3 months in the Bahamas during the early days of Covid, and then a just few weeks in the Mediterranean during the summers 2020-2022 and spring of 2023. Her engine and gen set hours are very low. She has been professionally managed and is on a strict preventative maintenance schedule. BAREFOOT is now ready to cruise, extensively, with a very high level of specification. She is also a fast sailing yacht and fantastic looking.

Owner’s Comments
We are a family of four with two very young children. We were looking for the highest quality centre-cockpit bluewater sailing yacht we could find in the 55–60-foot size range. Our criteria were uncompromising quality of construction and safety at sea; sea kindliness for comfort offshore; followed by a ‘superyacht’ calibre interior.
Our Outbound 56 is really an upgraded, customized Hylas 56. The Hylas 56 mould was sold back to the original builder-owner (Jachney family) and moved to Han Shang in a partnership with Outbound Yachts, who have been building at Han Sheng for decades.
After searching extensively for a recent second-hand yacht, we concluded that we would need to build to achieve the quality we desired. Outbound, almost uniquely amongst the few remaining blue water yacht builders, allowed us to extensively customize the yacht to our liking. Secondly, we found that the Hylas 56 simply sailed circles around her principal competitors, while having the most sea kindly motion in her class. Our conclusion, after years of searching and sailing on every competitor yacht, was that the product is superior, despite not being well known in Europe.
Building the yacht with Outbound at Han Sheng surpassed our expectations. The yard has huge experience in building high quality blue water yachts (Passport, Outbound). Over the last 30-years, Han Sheng developed traditional boat building crafts that are being lost in the West. Highlights include the bulletproof (literally), hand-laid fiberglass & Kevlar hull, exquisite joinery work, and excellent electrical and mechanical installations. The yard is also extremely flexible and accommodating. We were able to modify the interior spaces extensively to maximise space and comfort with the heads being a prime example. The materials available were also first rate. My wife specified custom mosaic tile flooring in the heads, and it was carried out to perfection. Nigel Leamon, who spent 25-years at Oyster, was our project manager and closely oversaw the build, traveling nearly monthly to the yard.
Hylas 56 BAREFOOT was built for a world cruise, and spec’d accordingly. The yacht was designed to be off grid for more than a month at a time in remote places. Redundancy, simplicity, and ease of maintenance were important as we anticipated repairs in remote parts of the world. Most components were over-spec’d. For example, the windlass is a Maxwell 3500. We spec’d maximum tankage with nearly 1,250 litres of fuel and 900 litres of water. Onboard power was also a focus, and we wanted to be able to go long periods without running the generator. We spec’d a large, deep discharge carbon-foam AGM battery bank, extensive solar capacity, over-spec’d inverter/chargers, and installed a commercial shipping generator. We can cook on electricity or gas. We spec’d the same DC watermaker (Spectra Cape Horn 330) that long-distance solo sailors use. The deck is Flexi-Teek for ease of maintenance and environmental friendliness. We also incorporated other unique details like glassed in chain plates aft designed to hold a Jordan-series drogue. You can pick the yacht up with just one of them.
The sail plan is a classic cutter for maximum flexibility. We also had a custom carbon bowsprit built with a Bamar electric furler that controls a North Sails top-down furling MPS / Code Sail. Everything is controlled from the re-designed, custom helm station.
We have loved everything about BAREFOOT. Sailing her single-handed is a breeze, and she sails beautifully. She is always comfortable; she never slams in a seaway. She is the star of every anchorage. Life aboard is luxurious and unfailingly a pleasure.
In the years before COVID-19, I anticipated either winding down my businesses or being able to reduce my work hours materially so that we could take 2-3 years as a family to cruise the world. During and post-COVID-19 my businesses expanded considerably, and I found myself unable to take time off as I had envisioned. We made the decision to upgrade to a larger crewed sailing yacht so that I can still manage my businesses but spend the rest of the time with the family rather than navigating, engineering, cleaning, and cooking. The alternative would be to wait another 5-years, but then we might miss the window with our children. We elected to continue with our extensive sailing plans, but in a different format with help.
Building BAREFOOT was a labour of love for us and we would like to request a right of first refusal if/when the new owner sells her.
