An inside look at jeff bezos’ $500 million superyacht and what it costs to keep it afloat.
Cliché but true, the second-richest man on the planet, according to Forbes , owns the tallest sailing yacht in the world . In fact, the 417-foot Koru is so big, it has its own 250-foot support vessel .
Priced at $500 million, the Koru hit the sea for the first time in 2023 and has since ferried Jeff Bezos and company around the globe. Complete with three massive 229-foot masts, it can reach a top speed under sail of 20 knots, according to the New York Post — which is approximately 23 miles per hour.
Made for a group, up to 18 guests can set sail on the yacht, allowing Bezos to bring family and friends on vacation with him. Here’s a look at the Koru’s extravagant features and how much it costs to operate his floating mansion.
Also take a look at Bezos’ mansion collection.

Key Features
As expected Bezos’ yacht is dripping with luxury. With a net worth of $203.8 billion — as of May 4, 2024, according to Forbes — he can afford to outfit the Koru with nothing but the best and he did just that.
The superyacht has three outdoor decks, with two containing swimming pools, according to the New York Post. It also features a cinema, several lounges and multiple business areas, according to Luxuo .
Highly personalized, the yacht is complete with a figurehead modeled after Bezos’ fiancée Lauren Sanchez. Even its masts are luxurious, as the Amazon founder chose in-boom furlers, which keep the canvases at the bottom of the mast above the deck, creating a pristine and spacious rope-free deck.

Support Vessel
One of the most shocking features of the Koru is the fact that it requires its own support vessel. The $75 million Abeona features a helipad that Sanchez has been spotted using to park her personal helicopter, according to the New York Post.
Designed to carry extra gear, four jet skis, two fast launches and a dinghy were spotted on the Abeona during a 2023 trip to Mallorca, Spain, according to the New York Post. It’s also capable of lifting a small submarine, but Bezos isn’t believed to own one — at least not yet.
Additionally, the support ship has two extra staterooms, which can accommodate four guests. This could come in handy if Bezos wants to entertain a larger group than can fit on the Koru.
On-Board Crew
It probably isn’t a surprise that operating both the Koru and the Abeona is no small task. From staff to drive the boats and maintain them to caring for guests onboard, Bezos needs a small army at sea.
The Koru has a crew of up to 36 people, according to The New York Post. If you think that’s a lot, the Abeona requires up to 45 crew and support staff.
Annual Operating Costs
Purchasing the Koru and Abeona cost Bezos more than half a billion dollars, but his expenses didn’t end there. As you might imagine, the annual cost to maintain a superyacht and its own enormous supporting yacht is more than most people earn in a lifetime.
The Koru costs approximately $25 million in operating expenses per year, according to the Daily Mail . Much less, but still sky-high, Bezos spends around $5 to $10 million on annual maintenance costs for the Abeona, according to Super Yacht Fan ).
When their owners are on dry land, yachts have to find a parking space. However, even this doesn’t always come cheap for Bezos and the Koru.
In November 2023, the billionaire’s yacht arrived in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, but was too big to fit in the port with all the outer superyachts, according to the Daily Mail. Therefore, it had to be docked with cruise ships at Port Everglades, at a rate of $16,500 per week.
While one week of storage might be more than the average person can afford, picking up the tab for any number of weeks would clearly be no issue for Bezos. While his superyacht and the many expenses surrounding it are clearly astronomical, he’s still living well within his budget.

Sailing yacht KORU: What we know so far about Jeff Bezos’ 127 meter yacht

By Nina Done 15 December 2022
Recent footage showcasing the vast proportions of the Amazon founder’s new 127m (417ft) Oceanco sailing yacht KORU , known throughout her build as Project Y721, has provided some valuable insight into one of the yachting industry’s best-kept secrets.
The megayacht’s specifications and amenities had been kept completely under wraps until she was forced to move from the Dutch yard’s primary facilities in Alblasserdam to get her masts fitted elsewhere in order to avoid dismantling the Koningshaven Bridge after huge public backlash.
In August, the yacht was spotted in the Port of Rotterdam after her trio of masts had been successfully stepped, with pictures barely doing justice to the monolithic proportions of the sailing spars, reportedly up to 70-80 meters tall.
World yacht rankings
KORU will replace Oceanco’s BLACK PEARL for second place in the world's largest sailing yacht rankings behind Nobiskrug's 143m (469ft) sailing yacht A .
Oceanco's newest yacht is understood to have an internal volume of 3,300 GT and will undoubtedly offer a wealth of luxurious accommodation and amenities. Although we have scant information about the yacht's features, we do know that she will have an aft dip pool along with a further Jacuzzi on her sundeck and variety of alfresco social spaces. She also has a crow's nest attached to her central mast, offering lofty panoramic views for her more adventurous guests.
From the pictures we can see KORU also benefits from full-length windows across her superstructure allowing plenty of light to infuse her interiors.
Design inspiration
Built with a steel hull and aluminum superstructure with teak decking, she reportedly takes her design cues from the 93-meter Lürssen sailing yacht EOS , perhaps inspired by the entrepreneur’s visits to this yacht in previous years.
Showcasing a midnight-blue hull with a distinctive red stripe running along her waterline, KORU’s exterior styling mirrors this traditional schooner style, with an elongated bowsprite and canoe stern. Another similar style yacht is the 90m (295ft) Royal Huisman sailing yacht ATHENA .
Kinetic energy technology
As expected from a tech entrepreneur, known for pushing boundaries and driving innovation, sailing yacht KORU will be trialing a prototype for a new kinetic energy recovery system. This is based on a conversion of wave induced motion, heave, pitch and roll into electric energy, with initial tests showing early promise.
With a nod to her green credentials, this will provide an additional power source for the yacht allowing for more sustainable cruising.
Tenders and toys
Access to sailing yacht KORU will be via folding passerelles, discreetly hidden in the yacht's hull on either side. Rescue and work tender launches will likely take place further forward, as per regulations. Recent pictures show a large hatch opening in her lower deck aft, which may contain further tenders and toys, but may also double as a beach club.
Sailing yacht KORU comes complete with a support vessel built by Damen Yachts, reportedly known as 75 meter (247ft) yacht WINGMAN .
Once delivered, it is understood that she will act as an official support boat for the sailing yacht , carrying the larger toys, including a submarine for thrilling excursions beneath the waves, plus a helicopter and landing pad. She is also believed to play host to an array of PWCs, with rumors of a speed boat and luxury car adding to the fleet, as well as providing accommodation for additional crew and staff.
When is sailing yacht KORU expected to be delivered?
From here she will undertake the all-important rounds of sea trials before being delivered to her owner sometime in the new year. It is understood that the yacht will be officially christened KORU upon delivery, and will operate under the Cayman Islands' flag. It is not believed that superyacht KORU will be available to charter.

Has the World Finally Had a Glimpse of Jeff Bezos’s $500 Million Mega-Yacht?
Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is appears to be getting closer to welcoming the superyacht he reportedly commissioned in 2018: a fancy toy fitting for the world’s second-richest person, given that it costs a reported $500 million and breaks one world record after another.
Called Y721, this vessel of all vessels is being custom designed by Dutch builder Oceanco and was spotted at a shipyard last week in Zwijndrecht, a town in the western Netherlands. It’s reportedly heading to another Netherlands town, Alblasserdam, for a final fitting. With a length of 417 feet, Y721 is the biggest sailing yacht in the world and the longest vessel to be built in the Netherlands. Features include a black hull, classic shape, three large decks, and three masts.
Superyacht Bravo Eugenia , belonging to the U.S. billionaire Jerry Jones, owner of the Dallas Cowboys, was built by Oceanco, which is also rumored to be behind Bezos’s new massive vessel.
Y721 is going to totally change the world of yachting with its design and innovation, says Fernando Nicholson, a luxury yacht sales broker with the yachting company Camper & Nicholsons. “It’s a boat with the latest technology and bells and whistles that have never been seen,” he says. “This will be the standard for all superyachts to follow, but in years to come, when its features become more affordable. Right now, only someone with Bezos’s wealth can swing the cost.”
The superyacht is said to be modeled after Oceanco’s famous yacht, the Black Pearl , which the company site says , “is one of the largest and most ecological sailing yachts in the world. She can cross the Atlantic without burning even a liter of fossil fuel.” Y721 will go through sea trails following its fitting-out in Alblasserdam and is expected to be ready sometime next year.
The Flying Fox , allegedly owned by Bezos.
However, it’s only one of two new boats for Bezos: He has also commissioned a shadow vessel called YS 7512 from builder Damen Yachts. This support ship measures 246 feet in length and accommodates 45 additional crew and guests. It will also feature a helipad and meeting space and have a vast amount of storage for Bezos’s endless number of water toys, with diving and snorkeling gear, jet and water skis, waterslides, and surfboards among the bunch. Shadow vessels are a growing phenomenon in the superyacht industry and one more extra toy that their owners want to have at the ready, says Nicholson. “You see them more and more now as an add-on to a superyacht purchase,” he says. “They’ve almost become a must.”
There’s no doubt that Bezos will be sailing the high seas in full panache and style come 2022. But really, is there any other way when you have more money than almost anyone else in the world and attract an endless amount of attention too?
Jeff Bezos' yacht reportedly cost $500 million and is the largest sailing yacht in the world. Here's what we know.
- Jeff Bezos ' new $500 million megayacht Koru set sail this summer.
- At 417 feet long, it's the world's largest sailing yacht and even boasts a sculpture resembling his fiancée, Lauren Sanchez.
- Here's everything we know about Bezos' yacht.
Jeff Bezos' new megayacht set sail this summer, with the founder and former Amazon CEO and his fiancée Lauren Sanchez crisscrossing Europe to show it off.
At 417 feet long, the vessel is the world's largest sailing yacht and cost an estimated $500 million. The yacht is named Koru , which means "loop" or "coil" in the Māori language and often signifies new beginnings.
Koru joins a large class of flashy billionaires' yachts , including the 305-foot-long Eos, which belongs to billionaire Barry Diller and fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg.
Oracle cofounder Larry Ellison owns a yacht called Musashi, which is 288 feet long.
Bezos commissioned the enormous boat from the Dutch custom yacht builder Oceanco, and it took years to construct.
In February, the yacht underwent its first sea trials, a series of tests usually conducted in the last phases of construction. Koru made its maiden voyage in April, traveling from the Netherlands to Gibraltar.
Related stories
The vessel has a pool on deck, and the prow features a mermaid sculpture that bears a striking resemblance to Bezos' then-girlfriend Sanchez. A second "support yacht," which has an on-deck helipad, accompanies Koru on its travels.
Sanchez has said the sculpture affixed to Bezos' yacht isn't her. "I'm very flattered, but it's not," she told Vogue. The sculpture is apparently of the Norse goddess Freyja, one of Bezos' favorite figures from mythology.
Bezos and Sanchez were first seen aboard the yacht along the coast of Spain in May, shortly before news broke that the couple had gotten engaged. The couple spent the rest of the summer on board traveling to various destinations, stopping at the Cannes Film Festival, sailing down the Italian Riviera, and making their way to Croatia.
In August, the yacht played host to an engagement party for Bezos and Sanchez , which reportedly drew guests including Bill Gates, Whitney Wolfe Herd, Ari Emanuel, and Leonardo DiCaprio.
While yacht season was apparently enjoyable for the couple, it was only after the vessel stirred up quite a bit of controversy: Koru's masts were so tall that the yacht nearly required the dismantling of a historic bridge in the Netherlands in order for it to pass through.
Locals planned to egg Bezos' superyacht if the bridge came down. Following the public outcry, Oceanco withdrew its request for the city to take apart the bridge.
And despite this massive purchase, Bezos' net worth is still well over $100 billion.

Jeff Bezo's $500m superyacht Koru: A New Era of Superyachts
The world of superyachts has been buzzing with excitement since the unveiling of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos' newest acquisition: the 127m (417ft) sailing yacht Koru. Built by Dutch shipyard Oceanco, Koru is a testament to the remarkable engineering and design prowess of the superyacht industry.
Koru's impressive specifications and luxurious amenities have been the subject of much speculation since the project's inception. However, it wasn't until recently that the public got a glimpse of the megayacht's vast proportions and incredible features.

Breaking news, how bezos stacks up against other tech titans in super-yacht size race.
After all the fuss over his suggestively shaped space rocket, it seems Jeff Bezos is still obsessed with the idea that size really matters.
The world’s third-richest man (behind Elon Musk and LVMH CEO Bernard Arnault) is building a megayacht in Holland on a scale so excessive that it looks like the boat from “Gulliver’s Travels” washing up on the island of Liliput.
To get out of the Rotterdam harbor where it is being built, a bridge will have to be dismantled.
The $500 million Y721 will be, at 417 feet long, the biggest sailing yacht in the world when it launches this summer. In a pissing match with other tech billionaires — Google co-founder Sergey Brin, Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison and media mogul and new People magazine owner Barry Diller — Bezos, 58, wins.
In fact, even his yacht’s secondary support boat is bigger than Brin’s elegantly futuristic $80 million yacht, the Dragonfly.
The Y721’s main vessel boasts three decks — one with a swimming pool — and, with three gigantic masts, it can claim eco-credentials by being powered largely via a cutting-edge propulsion system that harnesses kinetic energy under sail.
Still, the Y721 will cost around $25 million a year to run. There is space for 18 guests on board, and it will require a crew of 40. Inside, it is said to be modeled on Diller’s yacht, Eos (a favorite of celebrity friends including Kate Perry, Prince Harry and Bradley Cooper) — although Eos stretches out a mere 305 feet. (When Diller bought it, the boat was the largest private sailing yacht in the world.) Ellison’s Musashi, meanwhile, comes in at 288 feet, while Brin’s Dragonfly is just 240 feet.
Its tender will carry toys such as jet skis and smaller boats and also provide a helicopter landing pad — vital as Bezos’ high-flying girlfriend Lauren Sanchez, 52, likes to fly her beau on dates
The half-billion price tag is a relative drop in the ocean for the Amazon founder, whose net worth was valued at $181 billion by Forbes this week.
And yet, not everyone is impressed.
“If I was Jeff Bezos I would have gone for something a bit more radical, but it is a big yacht, which I guess is the point,” said Russell Crump, an independent broker of bespoke yachts. “It will be beautiful . . . Oceanco are the biggest and the best builders in Holland.”
The key word there is “biggest”: Even without the masts, Bezos’ yacht reportedly stands at over 131 feet tall, meaning Oceanco will have to temporarily dismantle the Konigshaven Bridge, known as De Hef, to allow the boat to pass.
Local authorities are expected to debate the request later this month, while a petition against it has been launched by local opponents (who have threatned to pelt the boat with rotten eggs) and collected more than 58,000 signatures.
“This man has earned his money by structurally cutting staff, evading taxes, avoiding regulations and now we have to tear down our beautiful national monument?” Rotterdam politician Stephan Leewis tweeted of Bezos. “That is really going a bridge too far.”
Oceanco declined to confirm that Bezos had commissioned the new boat.
But will Bezos be able to top the others in the name department? One suggestion: The Compensator.
Here are the tech titans’ boats by the numbers:

Jeff Bezos’ Superyacht: Everything You Need To Know
When it comes to superyachts, people tend to save their attention for builds that have actually been delivered. The forthcoming Project Y721, on the other hand, deserves inspection well before its due date; not just because it has been commissioned by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. What’s fascinating about the Jeff Bezos superyacht? It’s reportedly so ridiculously big, it needs a ridiculously big second support yacht just for the helipad.
Scheduled for delivery later this year, the 127-metre long superyacht will reportedly set Bezos back over US$500 million (AU$636.5 million) – chump change for the world’s richest bloke , of course – and is currently being built by Dutch yachtmaker, Oceanco.
What We Know About The Design Of Project Y721
There is no question that the new Jeff Bezos superyacht will be the largest sailing yacht ever built in the Netherlands. So far the internet rumour mill is buzzing with speculation that Project Y721 will essentially be a bigger version of the Black Pearl. The award-winning, 106-metre-long superyacht also has three masts and has since become one of the most recognisable builds in the world – perhaps even more so than the 108-metre-long Bravo Eugenia, which Oceanco built for Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones.
To date, no images have been released of Bezos’ new superyacht. Oceanco have been so tight-lipped about the project, which they have been working on for the past few years, that we don’t even have visuals of anything to do with the construction.
Black Pearl was built by Oceanco back in 2016 and delivered two years later, constructed with a steel hull and aluminium superstructure in collaboration with Nuvolari-Lenard, and Dykstra Naval Architects. Head of Interior Design at Nuvolari-Lenard, Valentina Zannier, worked with French architect Gerard Villate, as well as Ken Freivokh, BMT Nigel Gee, and Gerard P. Villate, to curate a raft of lavish features including extensive outdoor living spaces and two enormous spa pools.
Three portholes run along the Black Pearl’s main deck bulwark to help crate an arc from the sundeck hardtop through to the main deck aft. This flowing superstructure and a single-level engine room helps maintain a total interior volume of 2,700GT – enough space for 6 cabins and 12 guests. Onboard, guests can spread out across the multi-level atrium, which has a glass lift, and enjoy the spa pools, hot tub, and a beach club cinema.
Black Pearl is rated for top sailing speeds of 30 knots.
Where Is Project Y721 Being Built?
Project Y721 will be moved to a new shipyard for completion next month, where Oceanco will refine the billionaire’s passion project so that it spans several decks and features three enormous masts.
As previously mentioned, Project Y721 will have its own support yacht with a helipad, just in case the imposing main yacht wasn’t enough to reiterate just how much this industry has swelled in the past year. This is due to the main yacht’s tremendous scale and requisite sails, leaving little room to fit a helipad.
The support yacht will, reportedly, be used to store a number of other “toys” for Bezos, including a personal submarine, aircraft, super cars, and anything else that won’t be able to fit on the enormous main vessel. Although the actual size of Jeff Bezos’ superyacht’s yacht has yet to be revealed, along with details regarding how the two will travel in tandem while cruising the open seas.

Superyacht Demand Is Through The Roof
It seems the global COVID-19 pandemic has only strengthened to resolve of the ultra-rich, who are now increasingly looking towards ambitious sailing yachts, perhaps as a way to to more frequently travel on the open seas where they don’t heave to deal with pitiful land-dwellers.
According to the National Marine Manufacturers Association, US boat sales saw a 13-year high in 2020. When considering the changes brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, the skyrocketing demand makes perfect sense. Most land-based galas and lavish parties were cancelled, so the super rich turned attention to the open seas as a way to take a trip, host private events, socialise, and seek some privacy away from the ever-prying eyes of the paparazzi.
The COVID-19 pandemic only serving to accentuate the divide between the world’s richest people. According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index , the upper echelons of society managed to add another US$1.8 trillion (AU$2.2 trillion) to their collective wealth. Orders for new superyacht builds were apparently pumping by the time US summer rolled around, eschewing the idea that the pandemic would supress all transport industries and allowing the super rich to further indulge their seafaring fantasies.
As reported by Bloomberg , Sam Tucker, head of superyacht research at London-based VesselsValue, there has been massive demand industry wide.
“The market’s been roaring,” says Tucker. “It’s impossible to get a slot in a new-build yard… they’re totally booked.”
“The second hand-market is red hot,” he added. Which is no surprise, given the second-hand market for just about everything is going gangbusters at the moment, from cars and basketball cards , to these extravagant sailing yachts.
Megayacht icons Azimut Benetti Group currently have almost three dozen superyachts in the order book, a surge in demand the group’s vice president, Giovanna Vitelli, explains rather profoundly.
“The type of wealth has changed, but not the wealth itself,” says Vitelli. “This is the difference with 2008, when the [global financial] crisis was really widespread.”

T he largest sailing yacht in the world is owned by Jeff Bezos and is worth $USD500 million. According to an analysis by Wilk and Barroz the vessel emits 7,154 tonnes of CO2 a year.
In order to combat their extensive amount of environmental pollution, Bezos fiancé has tried to justify their usage by saying that the couple are committed to climate change which leaves some people skeptical.
In an interview with Vogue , she said, “I think Jeff and I are really focusing on the long-term commitment to climate and we’re extremely optimistic about it. Ten billion is just the beginning.”
Sanchez said that they only use green aviation fuel when possible and the yacht which is called Koru is also able to sail using wind power.
However it’s really not that simple. Because the yacht does not have a helipad. Bezos has a shadow vessel called Abeona to follow the yacht which houses a chopper for Sanchez to pilot in and out.
Koru the super yacht
The Koru measures 417 feet and took three years to build. It is the largest sailing vessel in the world and has triple masts reaching 230 feet. Although it can use wind power, it uses up a lot of diesel when it doesn’t. The pollution it emits is equivalent to that caused by 1,521 people annually.
Oxfam International’s inequality policy adviser Alex Maitland says , “Billionaires generate obscene amounts of carbon pollution with their yachts and private jets – but this is dwarfed by the pollution caused by their investments. Through the corporations they own, billionaires emit a million times more carbon than the average person. They tend to favor investments in heavily polluting industries, like fossil fuels.
“The world’s poorest communities, those who have done the least to cause climate change and are least able to respond and recover, suffer the worst consequences. This is unfair and immoral.”
The Guardian reported that Jeff Bezos, Roman Abramovich, Bill Gates, Larry Page, Michael Dell, Elon Musk and Carlos Slim are responsible for producing more greenhouse gas emissions than the annual energy emissions of two million homes.
