hatteras 43 motor yacht review

My wife and I presently own a 1980 61ft Hat MY Wide Body. Love it and cruise and live-aboard last 3.5 years. We are looking at downsizing and having owned a number of boats over the course of 40 years.....Grand Alaskan, Offshore and others. Still consider the Hats to be the best we have ever owned. We are looking at the 40ft and 43ft double cabin. The 40ft looks to be a little small coming out of the 61ft. We do have a desire to up our cruising speed. I see specs that say the 43ft with the 320hp Cats will cruise at 14 kts. Can any owner verify cruise, wot at what rpms and fuel consumption. Overall running characteristics? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Re: 43 Double Cabin Performance

Hi Barry, Years ago I owned 2 43 DC's (at different times of course). My last one was a 1980 tri-cabin which was subsequently converted to 2 cabins. We cruised that boat extensively including our annual trip from NJ down to south FL in the fall and return in the spring. I think it was an exceptionally fast boat for it's power and size and we normally cruised at 16.5 - 17 Knots. That was done at about 1950 rpm's. The engines were not cats however they were the 6-71TI's done by a company in NC who did many of Hatteras' engines. I think what you are looking at with the Cats are the later model which replaced the DC in the mid 80's and was called a MY. That replacement boat used the same hull as the former DC but with a total redesign of the house, bridge and interior. Mostly a better layout I think, except it had no dinette. That later model was available with Cats, 6-71TI or 6-71JT. Back to performance... At the normal cruising speeds of 16-17K it burned about 28 gals per hr according to the flow scans which I had installed. That 43 was probably the best boat I have ever owned and I have had many but I wanted more space for my granddaughters so I sold it and bought a 48'Series I MY. My old boat is my dock mate at our club in NJ and is still a great boat. My only recommendation however is as you search out the available boats, I think you should try to get one with stabilizers (mine didn't have them). One of our friends had the same model as mine with Niiads and it made a tremendous improvement in the ride. There are lots of 43 owners on this forum and I'm pretty sure they will concur with my assessment of the virtues of the 43's. Good luck Walt

My 43 with 671N's cruises at about 14 knots at 2200 RPM. About 22 GPH total fuel consumption. I just did valve, injector, rack adjustment at the end of the season and waiting to see if it makes any difference in the fuel consumption. Turns out one engine was set with the wrong injector timing. They run noticably smoother and quieter.

We also own a 79 model with the queen stateroom. We spend most of our time @9 kts and 1.6 NMPG. We recently made a 9 hour run at 17 KTS and burned 32-34 GPH. 6-71TI's 1100 NM trip this summer quite comfortable with 2-4 people

I have 6v92s. She has Naiad stabs. Very level ride when others are rolling. Cruise is 17 kt. Fuel burn 30 ish. Easily handled by 2 people. Have single handed too.

Thanks to all for the information. Much appreciated. I should have mention that the model we are exploring is the mid 80's model of the 43 Double Wide Motor Yacht. I believe they were in production 1984-1986 or something close. I would of course much prefer stabilized but have not seen any on the market. Again, thanks for the info.

I think our 43 MY is what your talking about. They donor really call them double cabins. MY is what they called them for some unknown reason. My cats are 3208 but they are turned down to 300 hp. No inter cooler or after cooler. Just straight turbo. We are pleased at the fuel economy. I have documented 3.6-4.2 gph at 7 kts. Seems like I used to get 7.5 kts for some reason. This is done at 1250 rpm. I run the engines up to 200o rpm's about every three hours to blow the soot out and achieve a whooping 10 kts. WOT is 15.5 kts but I haven't opened it up lately. We don't get in a rush and like the lack of noise and wind at low speeds. Plus love getting 2 miles/gal. We really like our 43 but recently wanted to buy a sail boat ( I know, don't throw tomatoes). We want to cruise to BVI and farther. You can see it on yacht world. Blue bayou in ft pierce Florida. We also love the floor plan and sundeck. It's the perfect size. Not stabilized and a few times wish it was but only a few times.

Pate, Thanks for the response and performance info. I did look at your boat on-line. Nice looking boat. I was raised in Wilmington so know the Southport area very well. We are used to traveling at 8-10kts in our 61 and are really looking for a 14-18kt cruise in our next boat. Barry

hatteras 43 motor yacht review

Hello all, we are thinking of purchasing our first Hatteras, a 1980 43' motor yacht: Used 1980 Hatteras 43 Double Cabin Motor Yacht, Michigan - 48043 - BoatTrader.com I don't know too much about these boats other than their brand recognition and first-rate build reputation. Can anyone give me advice on how I should spend my time during our showing this coming Wednesday? What to look for/ask about? I currently have a 33' Chris Craft Coho (which I restored) so I am familiar with boats in general. I'm looking for Hatteras-specific info, or info related to this model. For example, to what extent was coring used in the construction? Are the stringers cored or FRP box beams? Much obliged to any insight, photos, etc.

We just shopped for, bought and refilt a 1981 56. Even checked out boats in your area. Here's some of the things we've run into: blisters, a leaking water tank, 32V systems, corroded sea strainers, water intrusion in the forward compartment through the bilge pump (we remidied by putting a flapper behind the clamshell), some leaking windshields and old weather-stripping. These are mostly normal things you'd expect to find after 30 years. Great boats. I just got back from living on her for about 9 days, and cruising from Long Island to Philadelphia to the C&D. We chose her for cruising the Greeat Loop. Good bones, major class, solid boats. The one thing I do want to alert you to that these are high boats. We carry on board a ladder, stepstool and sea-step and always try to get side to docking. They're also not speedboats. Don't sink your last dime into buying the boat, because you'll want to spend some money taking care of some age issues, but unlike most 30 year old boats these are worth doing it to. BTW, if you need someone to check out the boat I've got a good guy in Detroit.

Thanks for the replies Good advice, thank you. I'm not a fan of wood cored stringers; I'll be sure to bring my plastic hammer for sounding. I am 6'1" so thanks for the heads up (pun intended) on the headroom. I'm looking at the helm arrangement-which I like for the reasons you mentioned-but are the gear levers on the outboard side? Seems like those should be the throttles. The boat is in Huron, Ohio. Any suggestions on Hatteras people out that way?

43' Hatteras DetroitCoho, Great to see that you've just joined, and welcome to YF, great to see another Great Lakes person on here. I'm actually from Huron and will be there this weekend. In terms of the Hatteras your mentioning, I would definitely be interested in it for you and your cruising / living arrangements. In terms of service in that part of the Lakes, you have MarineMax in Catawba, but I would suggest SonRise Marina over in Sandusky. They have a great facility and covered storage for a boat of that size, and are reasonable on rates. I would be willing to help you out as well if you need some advice on things, as I'm up there quite often nowadays. Good luck.

43 dc I have a 43 dc down in Florida and the 3 biggest issues I have discovered since owner her are, very tight engine room space, window leaks at the frames and potential for soft deck core areas, the vessel condition re, hull and topsides etc is a lot dependent on previous owners attention to detail and maintenance, the price on the one you are looking at is, in my opinion, based on a Bristol condition, I would consider a price more in the 60's provided no major issues. Mechanical and structural surveys etc are of course mandatory along with sea trial. Good luck, the layout of these models was excellent for two couple cruising.
Actually, being a 1980 model ...that boat may have foam core stringers.
thank you for all the responses Thanks everyone, good input here. I'll post how our visit went, possibly with pictures and questions

Current Status? So did you ever buy this 43? Since I have been looking for one for about a year i'm interested in how this turned out for you. I have looked at several 43's on the Florida West Coast but have not found any worth close to there asking price. Very disappointing what has become of most of these older DCMY's. Still Looking!
HI, thanks for the reply. No, we did not do a deal on the Hatteras. We bought a 1968 Chris Craft Roamer Riviera (46'). I think the DC we looked at might still be for sale. She was located in Huron, Ohio. In fact, there are 2 nice 43's for sale in Huron. Good luck!
Wow...must be a really nice Chris? Was there something that you saw that made you change your mind? Something I need to look out for that I may have missed? I do agree that fresh water boats are generally in much better condition than Florida saltwater boats. I may take your advice and look north if I don't find what i'm looking for down here. I'm in no rush, just trying to find that boat that someone really maintained properly. Congrats on your new Chris!

I just bought a 43 foot 1967 Hatteras twin cabin on Tablerock lake in Missouri. Did have some head issues and some electrical problems at first but we just love it. It is in amazing shape for its age, just had a survey done and it went great, he told us that we did very well and that the age of the boat did not reflect in its condition. It has never been in saltwater, so that was a huge draw to us. Pretty new to the bigger boat scene so pardon any crazy questions I might have.

Thank you for the welcome. Table Rock is beautiful and such a great place to have a boat this size, before buying this the biggest thing I had ever been on was a pontoon boat. I love the room it has in it and on deck, since I have 9 kids and 9 grandkids. It will be amazing to make family memories on and enjoy alone as well. I am planning on staying on it most of the winter, and thinking about living on it, any advice about this would be greatly appreciated. Y'all have a great day

Hi stacysmom, Welcome to YF, NYCAP123 is exactly right, you put 20 people (regardless of their size) on a 43 foot boat, and you'll have to tie a floating barge to the stern just to break out the grill. I don't know how old the grandchildren are, but anyone under the age of 12 needs to have a pfd (personal floatation device) on at all times. It's really easy to fall off a boat like that, especially when the decks get wet from people coming aboard after a swim. I hope you have thousands of hours of enjoyment aboard your new boat (well, new to you). I would dare say with that many children and grandkids...one of these days you'll utter those famous words from Jaws..."We're gonna need a bigger boat!"
Thank you all so much for the advise, I've learned that I will never get too much feedback or advise. No way are they all coming at once, I did buy it to retire and take it easy. Yes I am well equipped with many pdf's, plus I tied a tether to the younger ones so they can only go to the edge and not overboard. It has been a wonderful learning experience, many ups and downs and y'all are right it does feel a little like a lunchbox after living onboard for 7 months now. Storage is a huge issue, especially in the galley since I love to cook I am always looking for new ways to store things. Hope y'all have a great summer and again any advise is greatly appreciated. Yes it is sad that Hatteras dumped the smaller market, there are so many things I need that I just can't find so I improvise, overcome, and adapt.

Hatteras 53

Convertible, motor yacht & extended deckhouse, by david pascoe.

Without doubt, the 53 Hatteras Motor Yacht is the most successful medium sized motor yacht ever built, with over 600 of them between their various incarnations. The main flavors are the standard motor yacht, cockpit motor yacht, the extended deckhouse (ED) version of the early 1980's, and the 53 Convertible which is the same hull. They were in production from 1971 to 1989, a full nineteen years.

My view of why this yacht was so popular is a combination of excellent quality, good design, and a fair price. It certainly didn't have anything to do with performance because it is a relatively poor performer. Coming in at a whopping 55,000 lbs. in its original version, you need 1600 HP or more to move this yacht at the kind of speeds people like to have today. Instead, you're only going to get 850 from a pair of 8V71's or 924 from the 6V92's found only in the 1983-84 models of the motor yacht. In all the years of its production, the weight never changed much.

53HatLines.gif

The hulls and superstructure are built like a tank with the bottoms about an inch thick with balsa cored sides and decks. The coring is rarely a problem unless someone has drilled the decks full of holes and improperly attached equipment. Quite often you'll find that the pedestal seats on the sport fish bridge have let water into the core, and this will be notable from water dripping out of the aft housetop overhand in the outboard corners. Or you'll see green mold, water stains or cracks here. Shown nearby is a photo of one that survived Andrew after taking out a dock and mangling a concrete sea wall with little damage to the boat.

And, of course, you'll probably find the famous Hatteras blisters on the bottom, but with laminates this thick, who really cares? Hatteras probably should have taken out a patent on the blistering process.

Speed wise, you could only describe these boats as just plain doggy, if you're a speed freak. If you want to cruise at 20 knots or better, these boats aren't for you. They're just too heavy to make them go any faster. People have managed to squeeze another two knots out of the 53 convertible by adding 3-4" chine extensions, and a lot of them have them.

All things considered, these are first rate production motor yachts, although you'll find the electrical systems in the North American Rockwell boats from the second half of the 1970's leave a bit to be desired. Other than that, these boats have no major problems. Nor should they after Hatteras had 19 years to work out the bugs. That's the advantage of long-term production.

The primary weak point is the 8V71TI engines which have a poor turbocharger/intercooler system. The two part AirResearch turbos are held together with acorn clamps that frequently crack and leak. And the intercoolers are notorious for getting clogged up with sludge and causing high engine temperatures. Plus the venerable 8V71 was never intended to put out this much power, so its being run on the edge  of her power range. The Allison M20 gearboxes were another weak point. They had trouble with getting adequate lube oil to the upper shaft bearings, which was a design defect. Many of these got a fixit kit installed after the boxes went bang.

Most of these boats through the early 80's had upsweep, water jacketed risers. Which means that if the riser leaks, as it eventually will, the water runs into the engine. Many of these systems were revised, others were not. Best to look for one that has insulated risers.

Leaking windows in these boats were not much of a problem except for the Convertible front windshields, many of which have been removed and filled in. The anodized frames don't last forever and a lot of them will have holes in them which can be repaired in most cases by just welding up the pitted holes. This happens because nobody ever bothers to clean out the salt and debris from  the bottom of the slide tracks.

All models have dual control stations, so you don't have to look around for this feature. Another good point for folks in bad weather climates is that visibility from the lower station is quite good.

With her 15'10" beam this is a big 53 footer and the layout takes maximum advantage of that space. Most people love the galley down layout with the dinette opposite which is great for informal meals.  And the galley is big enough, and well enough equipped with a full sized Moderm Maid range top, oven and dishwasher for the serious chef, while still having adequate counter space as well as plenty of storage space.  The owner's stateroom is adequate but the guest stateroom is cramped and many prefer to use the forward crew or guest stateroom instead, despite the upper and lower berths. Heads and shower size is more than adequate.

Seaworthiness? I hear a lot of captains complaining that this isn't a good sea boat. To which I respond, "compared to what?" A lot of these guys get off multimillion dollar custom yachts and complain how these boats handle. Apples and oranges. These are not designed as passage makers, nor do they have the fuel range. If you want the accommodations that a full bow gives, this is what you get. In my view, it handles okay, and does especially good in a short 3' chop where most folks in this size boat have trouble. The deep entry hull design is one of the reasons she doesn't go so fast. Being built like a tank means that it doesn't bob like a cork. She's a slow roller and she'll throw water like a busted fire hydrant.

The style of the earlier models is definitely pass, so the prices have come way down and a lot of people who can't afford a boat this size have purchased them. That means that they can't afford to maintain them either. Which means that you can find them at very good prices, but the older ones are essentially restoration projects. The ED models are still very popular and command good prices. Also, they changed the hull shape a bit so you'll get a little better speed out the 1980's models. If you want to know the specifics, call Hatteras.

Taken altogether, the popularity of this yacht is well deserved.

53 Convertible was discontinued in 1983 with the introduction of the more efficiently designed hulls of the 52 and 55 Convertibles. You'd think the convertible, being the same hull would weigh less than the motor yacht without a superstructure. But it doesn't; it weighs more at around 61,000 lbs. Part of the additional weight comes from the usual 12V71TI's and Twin Disc or Allision M20 gear boxes. Where the rest of it comes from I haven't the slightest idea.

Hatteras 53 Convertible survived hurricane Andrew with virtually no structural damage.

This is one of the ways we get to find out just how well built a boat really is. In the 160 MPH winds of hurricane Andrew, this 53 Convertible  took out several 12" dock pilings and the bottom battered against the concrete seawall  with virtually no structural damage resulting to the hull. Nor did the windows blow out or suffer from any major leaks.

Shown above is a photo of a late model 53 that survived hurricane Andrew after taking out some 12" pilings and battering the hell out of a concrete seawall without much damaging the boat. When it comes to talking hull strength, I often draw my conclusions on situations like this, not just tapping around a bit with a hammer.

The standard 650 HP engines are just barely adequate for this boat, and generally give good service. But a lot of folks have souped them up, sometimes correctly, often not, so you find engines going "bang" a little more frequently than they should. At least you don't have to tear the boat apart to get at them as there are plenty of hatches above so they can be lifted right up.

Undoubtedly the most popular large sport fish ever built, its still a neat boat in my view. With much of the weight further aft, her performance is quite a bit better than the motor yacht, and I love to watch one these thing plowing through the tide rip heading out Port Everglades with a halo of rainbows glittering in the sun. She does throw a bit of water. On the later models they added propeller pockets which lowered the shaft angle and supposedly gave a little better speed.

For a long time I thought they were terribly squatty until one day I realized that that is partly an illusion presented by the unusually low cockpit, magnified by a very high freeboard forward. My view is that these are all-around neat boats, just that they don't perform by today's standard. The strong suit of the layout is a huge cockpit, salon and bridge, with the forward accommodations being sacrificed for these spaces, as is appropriate for a real sport fisherman. Not quite as macho as a Bertram of the same genre, this is still a muscle boat with interiors that are hardly plush.

The main flavors were galley up and galley down, with more of the former in later years, and more of the later in early years. All had transom doors that never worked so good. Plus the optional tackle centers had too much wood in them. Later models come with a built in bow pulpit, and all have transom doors. Earlier models have a bridge layout that's not nearly as nice as the 1980's models. Nor are they known as leakers, despite the forward windshields which needed infrequent rebedding.  The window frames do support the bridge, and boats that have been abused will often have cracked window glass. Otherwise, its not much of a problem.

Aside from forward windshields, there are few faults to be found with these boats. The age old problem of broken forward cabin soles appears in many, particularly when there is a built in washer/dryer combo up forward, but this is no big deal. A little more serious, and frequently overlooked, is the fact that the engine room vents pull a lot of salt spray in that can really wreck equipment and engines. If you buy one, you need to install filters on the vents.

The hull/deck joint back aft is a bit weak and you'll often find a lot stress cracks in this area. At least it doesn't have those horrible aluminum rub rails like Bertram used. Rather have cracks than that unsightly stuff. Even in the early years the cockpits were full Fiberglas liners, and although the hatches were kind of crummy, at least it isn't wood like a Bertram. The bait wells aren't too swift either, being narrow and deep. With fuel tanks on center line, there isn't much storage under this large deck which is very low to the water, which definitely is nice. Nor does that fact have the tendency to sink these boats.

For some strange reason, Hatteras never did a very good engine room layout in these boats, and this never changed throughout all the years of production. The engine room is big enough, but also feels cramped with accessibility not as good as you'd expect in a boat this size. Perhaps that's why E.R. maintenance in these boats tends to be substandard compared to others. Things are hard to get to, and a bit disorganized to boot. At least the generator isn't under the cockpit deck. Its shoved back against the aft bulkhead where you can only reach one side of it.  And whereas the wiring in the 53 Motor Yacht is nice and neat, for some strange reason in the convertible it is messy.

During the early 1990's quite a few people poured a lot of money into some of these boats. That wasn't a particularly good investment. While a lot of them thought they'd get their money out, they didn't. That means that there were (or are) a lot of good deals to be had on 53's that are all dolled up, including some weird paint jobs like blue or yellow hulls.

If you want a big, serious sport fisherman, but find a new one way out of reach, the 53 Convertible is still worthy of consideration.
