Trump Vs. Harris Fundraising Race: Harris Raises $540 Million Since Biden Dropped Out, Campaign Says

Vice President Kamala Harris’ entrance into the presidential election last month has blown up her fundraising race with former President Donald Trump, with the combined Biden and Harris campaigns raising more than four times as much as Trump in July and erasing the ex-president’s cash advantage—and Democrats say pro-Harris groups have raised over $500 million since Joe Biden left the race.
Vice President Kamala Harris speaks during the Democratic National Convention on Aug. 19 in Chicago.
The Biden—now Harris—campaign committee raised $516.8 million and Trump’s campaign committee raised $268.5 million in total between January 2023 and July 31, 2024, the most recent date for which Federal Election Commission filings are available.
Harris also ended July with far more cash on hand than Trump—with $219.7 million to Trump’s $151.3 million —erasing a previous cash advantage the Trump campaign had at the end of June, before President Joe Biden dropped out of the race.
The Harris campaign raised $204.5 million in July alone, while the Trump campaign raised $47.5 million , shaking up what was previously a more evenly-matched cash race (Biden and Trump had raised $284.1 million and $217.2 million in total as of the end of June, respectively) as Harris entered the race on July 21 and quickly posted huge fundraising numbers, with her campaign reporting $81 million in donations in the first 24 hours of her campaign.
The fundraising surge reportedly continued into August: On Aug. 25, the campaign said Harris For President and allied groups had raised a combined $540 million since Biden dropped out, including some $82 million during the Democratic National Convention (those fundraising totals won’t be verified until official August data is released next month).
Harris announcing Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her vice presidential nominee has also fueled fundraising, with the campaign reporting it raised $36 million in the 24 hours after the running mate was announced.
Biden’s campaign committee was renamed for Harris when he dropped out and endorsed her, and though Trump has challenged that with the FEC, his challenge isn’t expected to impact the election.
Many top donors also bankroll independent political groups like super PACs, which aren’t beholden to the FEC’s $6,600-per-person limit for direct campaign donations—which is where Trump still holds an advantage, at least for now.
FEC filings through Aug. 21 show super PACs have spent approximately $64.5 million supporting Harris since the beginning of July, while PACs have spent approximately $38.9 million supporting Trump during that same period.
The top 10 super PACs supporting Trump have collectively raised approximately $305.6 million since the beginning of the year, however, compared with $199.2 million raised by the top 10 PACs supporting Harris—though she may be able to narrow that gap in the weeks ahead.

Surprising Fact
Harris’ fundraising surge after she first announced her campaign surpassed the Trump campaign’s biggest donation bumps. The Trump campaign reported raising $52.8 million in the 24 hours after he was convicted on 34 felony charges in Manhattan in May, which led to the WinRed platform for small GOP donations temporarily crashing from the traffic. That was soon surpassed by the $81 million Harris raised in the first 24 hours of her campaign.
What To Watch For
We won’t know for sure how the two candidates’ fundraising matches up as of August until September 20. That’s when the campaigns will submit their FEC filings for how much they raised this month.
How Much Are The Parties Raising?
Democrats are also outraising Republicans at the party level, with FEC filings through July showing the Democratic National Committee has raised $316.8 million , while the Republican National Committee has raised $290.7 million . That comes even as Republicans very slightly outraised the Democratic Party last month, taking in $30.94 million and Democrats $30.9 million . Democrats still had more cash going into August, however, holding $65.8 million to Republicans’ $30.9 million and erasing the GOP’s previous cash advantage they held at the end of June.
How Much Are Harris And Trump Spending?
The Biden—now Harris—campaign has historically spent its cash earlier than Trump, reporting through June that it’s spent $189.7 million, versus $92.1 million by the Trump campaign. That trend has remained the case now that Harris has entered the race, with the Harris campaign spending $80.7 million last month to Trump’s $24.3 million . The Biden and Harris campaigns have now spent $329.5 million in total this election cycle, versus $117.2 million by Trump. There are signs that the ex-president’s campaign is ramping up its spending as Harris has narrowed the polling gap between the two sides, however, making a $12 million ad buy for advertisements in battleground states through mid-August that Axios reported was believed to be Trump’s biggest ad buy since the primary election.
Who Are Billionaires Giving To?
Billionaires have broken out their checkbooks for both candidates. Trump’s biggest donor is billionaire heir Timothy Mellon , who’s given an eye-popping $115 million to support the ex-president, including a new $50 million donation to Trump’s Make America Great Again super PAC in July. Trump’s other top billionaire supporters include Linda McMahon, wife of wrestling mogul Vince McMahon ; energy executive Kelcy Warren ; ABC Supply founder Diane Hendricks ; oil billionaire Timothy Dunn and well-known conservative donors Richard and Elizabeth Uihlein . Tesla founder Elon Musk has also backed Trump through the newly formed America PAC, but he has denied reports saying he would donate $45 million per month to the super PAC. After Biden attracted billionaires like Michael Bloomberg and LinkedIn founder Reid Hoffman , Harris has already got the backing of a number of wealthy benefactors herself, including Hoffman, Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings , former Meta COO Sheryl Sandberg and philanthropist Melinda French Gates . More than 100 venture capitalists signed a letter on July 31 backing Harris’ candidacy and pledging to vote for her, which included such billionaires as entrepreneur Mark Cuban , investor Vinod Khosla and Lowercase Capital founder Chris Sacca .
In addition to helping his campaign, Trump’s donors have also helped to finance his personal legal bills through his leadership PAC Save America , which has been used to pay his legal fees as cases against him have piled up. Trump’s campaign initially skimmed money from small-money donors for his legal fund, siphoning 10% of every dollar raised through his website for Save America. That ended when Trump joined forces with the RNC in March, but the ex-president is now soliciting help from bigger donors who give to his Trump 47 Joint Fundraising Committee . Donations to that committee first go to the Trump campaign—with a maximum contribution of $6,600 to his campaign and recount efforts—and up to $5,000 then goes to Save America. It’s only after that maximum has been reached that any money left over will go to the RNC and state parties.
Key Background
Harris entered the presidential race on July 21, as Biden announced he was leaving the race and endorsed the vice president minutes later. Her candidacy has reignited the presidential race as Biden faced growing questions about his mental fitness and polling showed Trump pulling ahead, with the VP’s enormous fundraising haul reflecting a broader enthusiasm about Harris on the left that’s also included an explosion of social media memes and thousands mobilizing for her campaign. Harris’ fundraising hauls come as Biden had long maintained a fundraising lead over Trump throughout the campaign. That narrowed more in recent months as Republicans have ended their primary and coalesced around the ex-president, Trump first outraising Biden in April as he joined forces with the RNC and as his criminal trial was underway.

Experts puzzle over why Bayesian yacht sank. Was it a 'black swan event'?
The Bayesian set off on a leisurely cruise around Italy's southern coast on a sunny day in late July.
The luxurious super yacht − which boasted one of the largest masts in the world and carried a crew of business moguls, including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his family and a chair of Morgan Stanley − set sail from the Amalfi Coast, bound for Sicily.
Less than a month later, the ship had sunk 160 feet under the water , leaving its cook dead and six of its passengers, including at least two Americans, missing and prompting a massive search that has drawn international attention.
Now, experts are trying to piece together why in the early hours Monday the Bayesian was quickly pulled under the waves amid a storm that saw at least one tornado spin up over the water.
Breaking news to start your day smart. Sign up for USA TODAY's Daily Briefing newsletter.
A perfect storm led to Bayesian sinking, experts say
The combination of unlikely factors that could have contributed to the ship's fate constituted a "black swan event," Matthew Schanck, chairman of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, told USA TODAY.
The Bayesian was well-built: A 2008 product of Italian ship maker Perini, it was constructed in accordance with international maritime standards and commercially certified by the U.K.'s Maritime and Coastguard Agency, according to Schanck.
The bout of bad weather that swept the area when the ship went down was also out of the ordinary in the northern Mediterranean, "which isn't renowned for prolonged, significant stormy weather," he said.
"The fact that those two elements have then resulted in the foundering of a super yacht is pretty extraordinary," Schanck said. "These things don't happen every day."
After the ship sank just before 5 a.m. local time, 15 people, including a 1-year-old, were pulled from the water. Some were rescued from a life raft by the crew of a ship docked nearby.
Ricardo Thomas, the ship's cook and a native of Antigua, was found dead, according to authorities.
As of Tuesday, six people were missing, including Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter. Several missing passengers were involved in Lynch's trial on fraud charges, including Jonathan Bloomer, a Morgan Stanley chair who served as his character witness, and one of Lynch's attorneys. Lynch, accused of fraud after he sold his company to electronics giant Hewlett-Packard, was acquitted of all charges weeks ago.
Who is Mike Lynch? UK entrepreneur among those missing after superyacht sinks off Sicily
Tornado formed over unusually hot water
Storms in the area that night may have whipped up a water spout, a tornado over the water , according to local meteorologists.
It was likely triggered by the water's unusual warmth, said Rick Shema, a certified consulting meteorologist who served in the Navy.
"The water spout was an uncommon occurrence," he said. "But again, these things happen, especially in warmer water."
At 83.7 degrees, water in the area was more than 3 degrees hotter than average on the day the Bayesian sank, likely the result of climate change, Shema said.
"Hurricanes can form at 80 degrees. This was almost four degrees higher than that," he said.
The water spout may have spun up when cooler air dropped from mountainous places nearby onto the hot water, he said. "A water spout is a vortex, basically like a tornado, spinning real fast, sucking up water and moisture as the column rises," he said.
Although water spouts only reach around 120 mph, as compared with tornadoes on land, which can reach up to 300 mph, "you don't need 200 mph to sink a ship," he said.
"Even an average tornado, 120 miles an hour, that's a lot of wind," he said, "which would heel the boat over for sure."
Water spouts spring up suddenly, Shema said. Before they strike, winds can be slow, but "once the water spout comes over, bam, it's on," he said.
Before sunrise, the ship's crew may not have seen the water spout coming. "The visibility was probably a big factor," he said.
With the windows of the yacht opened, as they likely were in the hot weather, the water spout could have triggered water that flooded through the portholes, Shema said, causing the ship to sink.
Tragedy strikes: Scramble to find survivors after Bayesian yacht sinks off Sicily coast
Search continues, but shift to recovery phase approaches
Italian authorities said the Bayesian was probably at anchor when the storm struck, meaning it couldn't maneuver and ride the waves, according to Mitchell Stoller, a captain and maritime expert witness. Other ships in the area that turned on their engines rode out the storm, he said.
"When you're at anchor and you see weather, you start your engine and you put the wind on the bow. You don't let it get on the side," he said.
Schanck said another key question concerns the position of the keel, a heavy weight underneath the boat that acts as a counterbalance to keep it upright, when the ship sank. When lifted, "that's going to affect the stability of the vessel, because, obviously, you've now raised the center of gravity of that vessel," he said.
The Bayesian was floating over 160 feet of water at the time, deep enough that the keel would likely be deployed. But the fact that "the vessel heeled over so heavily makes me question that," Schanck said.
The cause of the disaster may not be known until the ship can be examined in more detail, experts say. Prosecutors in a nearby town have already opened an investigation.
Schanck said investigators will have plenty to work with once the operation moves into a recovery phase.
"The vessel is intact and in good condition on the seabed," he said. "There's a lot of eyewitness accounts from other vessels in the area and the shore."
As the search entered its second day on Tuesday, the rescue effort may shift in that direction soon. "I suspect, later on, today or tomorrow, we'll probably see some mention of a recovery operation being stated," Schanck said.
The decision to would depend on whether rescuers find signs of life in the ship and air pockets or survivable spaces, Schanck said. At this point, survivors on the water's surface looks unlikely. "My professional opinion is that the casualties will be located within the vessel," he said.
"There is a risk versus benefit in all maritime search and rescue incidents," he said. "Where we start transitioning to a recovery phase, that line shifts."

Who Was on the Sunken Yacht? Tech Mogul Mike Lynch, His Family and Friends.
Mr. Lynch, the former chief executive of the software firm Autonomy, who was acquitted on fraud charges in June, was with friends and family when the yacht went down in a severe storm.

By Michael J. de la Merced
Michael de la Merced reported on Mike Lynch’s career and legal battles over the course of 13 years across two continents.
A cruise on the Mediterranean Sea aboard a superyacht was supposed to be a celebratory event for the British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch , who was acquitted in June of fraud charges tied to the sale of his company, Autonomy, to the tech giant Hewlett-Packard.
Instead, it turned into a disaster after the yacht, a 180-foot boat called the Bayesian, sank off the coast of Sicily in a violent storm. Of the 22 people aboard, 15 were rescued and seven others died . Search operations ended on Friday after the final body was recovered from the site of the sunken yacht .
Here’s what we know about the passengers.
Mike Lynch and his family
Mr. Lynch, 59, is a British software entrepreneur who had once been described as his country’s Bill Gates. He founded the software firm Autonomy, which analyzed clients’ unorganized data, and turned it into one of the most prominent British technology companies of its time. He became a widely known corporate leader, who advised David Cameron, the British prime minister at the time, and joined the board of the BBC.
In 2011, Mr. Lynch sold Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion, which was far above its market value, earning him hundreds of millions. But HP investors almost immediately soured on the transaction, and the American tech giant quickly fired its chief executive — and then Mr. Lynch.
HP later accused Mr. Lynch of misleading it about the state of Autonomy’s business, setting off a decade-long legal ordeal for the British executive, who denied the accusations. U.S. prosecutors charged him and other executives with fraud, and Autonomy’s chief financial officer was convicted in 2018.
Despite appeals to the British government, Mr. Lynch was extradited to the United States last year and was confined to a townhouse in San Francisco ahead of his criminal trial, which began in March. Facing the possibility of decades in prison if convicted, Mr. Lynch and another colleague were instead acquitted of all charges.
An official in Palermo, Sicily’s capital, said on Thursday that Mr. Lynch’s body had been recovered. His wife, Angela Bacares, 57, accompanied him on the yacht, and she was rescued on Monday when it sank. She was a consistent presence at his trial in the United States. Records show that she controlled Revtom, the company listed as the owner of the Bayesian.
The body of Hannah Lynch , Mr. Lynch and Ms. Bacares’s 18-year-old daughter, was thought to be recovered on Friday.
The other guests
Jonathan Bloomer, 70, chair of Morgan Stanley’s international arm and the chairman of Hiscox, an insurance provider that trades on the London Stock Exchange, was on the yacht when it sank, along with his wife, Judy Bloomer, 71. Their bodies are thought to be among those recovered, but Italian authorities have not identified them.
Christopher J. Morvillo, 59, a New York-based partner at the international law firm Clifford Chance, was also on the yacht. A former federal prosecutor who comes from a family of prominent lawyers, Mr. Morvillo represented Mr. Lynch during his criminal trial in San Francisco. His wife, Neda, 57, was with him on the yacht. Their bodies are also assumed to be among those recovered.
“We are in shock and deeply saddened by this tragic incident,” a representative of Clifford Chance said in a statement.
Surviving passengers rescued from the yacht include Charlotte Golunski, a partner at Mr. Lynch’s venture firm, Invoke Capital; Ms. Golunski’s husband, James Emslie; and their one-year-old daughter Sophie. Also rescued were Ayla Ronald, a lawyer at Clifford Chance, and her partner, Matthew Fletcher.
The yacht had a crew of 10, and nine were rescued. The body of the chef, Recaldo Thomas, was recovered from the water, the Sicilian Civil Protection Department said.
Elisabetta Povoledo contributed reporting, and Kitty Bennett and Susan Campbell Beachy contributed research.

YB Tracking
Keep up with all the exciting action on the water during The Tall Ships Races 2024 with YB Tracking.
During The Tall Ships Races 2024, each participating ship in the Races will be fitted with a YB satellite transponder, a self-contained battery operated tracker which allows tracking of a vessel’s position from anywhere on earth.
All vessels taking part in the Races will be equipped with one so you can follow the fleet – anytime, anywhere – as they sail from Klaipeda, to Helsinki, Tallinn, Turku and Mariehamn before finishing in Szczecin.
The Tall Ships Races 2024: Race One Preview
Ahead of the first race of the series, Race Director, Magda Makowska, previewed what is looking set to be an fast paced passage through the Baltic Sea.
How Does YB Work?
YB “wakes up” on a regular basis (for example, every hour) to obtain a position using the GPS satellite network, and then transmits that position back to an online map, which is embedded on the STI website during a Race, or viewed directly. If you own a Yellowbrick you get your own personal map, which you can embed into your own website. Vessels taking part in STI events are now being offered a unique opportunity to purchase their own Yellowbrick device, at a substantial discount to the normal price. And for each take STI then benefits from a rebate on its cost for hiring Yellowbrick for our Races.
HOW TO USE YB TRACKING
YB Tracking features a big selection of different sailing events; the event you are interested in should be chosen on the PC or app home screen by its event name.
Once the event is loaded, the user will see a satellite view of the first race course for that event. The system works slightly differently between PC and phone app – but the basic functions remain the same.
There are multiple legs (or courses) in the event – you can click on the race leg you want to see from a drop down menu. Each race leg page shows the satellite positions of competing vessels and different view options including Overlays, Teams, Leaderboard and Social.
Overlays can provide latitude and longitude lines, day and night indicators, course waypoints, up to date wind directions and speeds, and change the overall map style.
Teams shows vessels in alphabetical order along with nationalities and further information. If you can’t find the vessel you are looking for, it might be you are looking at the wrong division/group. Click the “Groups” button on the top right, and choose the right group. Touching the name of the boat should then take you to the boat on the map.
Leaderboard is a list of the vessels, start time, DTF – Distance To Finish and VMG – Velocity Made Good (the progress made to the finish that is the speed along the rhumb line – the straight distance from race start to race finish).
Please Note: All stats are before the Sail Training International Time Correction Factor has been calculated.
Choose Leaderboard separates the ships into classes for more detailed race tracking. Clicking one of the vessels will centre the map on their location, and highlight them on the map. If a user clicks on or hovers over a vessel, key information – including skipper’s name, current sailing speed, last recorded position and their place in the class leader board and overall leader board – will be shown.
Zoom allows users to select one of three race overviews All, Leaders and Course. Users can zoom into the lead three teams and add different overlays to the event map.
CAN YOU REPLAY THE RACE?
Yes – once all the data has loaded, a scroll bar will appear at the bottom of the map. Clicking and dragging this will move you backwards and forwards through time, so you can replay the race and see the vessels move.
HOW UP TO DATE IS IT?
The mobile app will show the latest data we have at all times. If viewing on a PC the data will usually be refreshed at least every fifteen minutes.

Follow The Tall ships Races Magellan-Elcano
Once again, during The Tall Ships Races Magellan-Elcano you are able to follow the Tall Ships fleet as they make their way along the Race route thanks to the YB satellite tracking system.
You can follow each race leg and ensure you miss none of the sailing action below.
The Tall Ship Races Magellan-Elcano: Race One, Report Three
Weather conditions came to the fore on day three of Race One as light winds leading the Race Committee to announce a Finish at Sea. The weather had already presented the fleet with a number of tactical decisions to make and made for a challenging race across the classes.
With a revised finish deadline of 0800 UTC today (22 August), the fleet will now continue their journey to A Coruna and the next stop on The Tall Ships Races Magellan-Elcano. Provisional results show the Class B Gaff Cutter, Jolie Brise , and Class D BM Yawl, Stella Polare coming out on top, but all results are still pending until the fleet reach the next Host Port.
“The Race Committee brought the time limit forward to 0800 UTC in view of the light headwinds encountered by the fleet. Bring the timeline limit forward will allow ample time for ships to make A Coruna and the next scheduled celebrations. We’ve seen an exciting race from Falmouth and it has been fascinating to see the different tactics being deployed across the fleet, in particular the close battle between the Polish ships, Fryderyk Chopin and Dar Mlodziezy. Well done to all crews who have completed such a challenging race!” The Tall Ships Races Magellan-Elcano Race Director, Paul Bishop
Provisional placings of each Class at the time of publication are below, these are subject to change based on the final race declaration forms which will be submitted by each ship upon their arrival in A Coruna.
Fryderyk Chopin (Poland)
Dar Mlodziezy (Poland)
Capitan Miranda (Uruguay)
Jolie Brise (UK)
Stella Polare (Italy)
Challenge Wales (UK)
Juan de Langara (Spain)
The Tall Ship Races Magellan-Elcano: Race One, Report Two
The fleet are continuing well on the race to A Coruna, with Fryderyk Chopin (Poland) and Jolie Brise (UK) continuing to lead Classes A and B respectively, and Stella Polare (Italy) pulling ahead in Class C/D.
As the fleet enter their second full day of sailing, we asked the crews of the fleet for their favourite moments of the race event so far. The answers give a great insight to life on board during the races.
Cuauhtemoc: Cadet Gerardo Motta
“I want to write about the best things that has happened to me since leaving Falmouth. The first being the teamwork I’ve had with my fellow crew, throughout all the efficient manoeuvering that hopefully will have positive results at the end of the competition, and also the learning and experience I’ve gathered through our navigation.
In the end all of the dedication the crew brings to accomplish our final goal, to have a positive experience and live an adventure, memories that will stay with us for a lifetime.
Now, this is the best experience of my life.”
Challenge Wales
“Bioluminescence at night where the water would glow before the dolphins break the surface. Shooting stars and how bright they were. Seeing dolphins in general were pretty amazing and we liked seeing the ship lights at night from other vessels as most of us had never seen that before.
We’re excited for the night watch tonight to hopefully see more amazing things. Also, passing the waypoint!”
Dar Mlodziezy: Trainee Hubert
“Our arrival to waving people Falmouth, walking down the streets of Falmouth and our first pint in Falmouth. Watching the setting sun seen from the very top of the mast and seeing all the other vessels”
Fryderyk Chopin
“When our engineer finally fixed the toilets!”
“Putting up sails without blowing them out! And celebrating an 18th birthday on board.”
The leaders of each Class at the time of publication are:
Georg Stage (Denmark)
The Tall Ship Races Magellan-Elcano: Race One, Report One
With a little over 24 hours of the race completed, it has been a tale of different tactics for the fleet on their way to A Coruna.
Following a dramatic start, which saw Capitan Miranda (Uruguay) cross the start line first as Storm Betty created large swells to contend with, the fleet have looked to differing courses in their efforts to reach the finish line first.
Race Director, Paul Bishop, explains the different options on offer to the Captains.
“The vessels have had a challenging night tacking into the SW headwinds towards WP1 off the north west coast of France. The trainees are beginning to get their ‘sea legs’ as the large residual swell from Storm Betty has subsided and are now enjoying more settled conditions. Essentially, there seem to be three different tactics going on. Some captains and navigators have opted to go south, some to the west whilst others have decided to take the more direct route. Each have their potential merits and it will be fascinating to see which pays off they round WP1. The wind is forecast to become light and variable over the next 24hrs before a more favourable northerly sets in later on Tuesday.” The Tall Ships Races Magellan-Elcano Race Director, Paul Bishop
Relive the Tall Ships Races 2023
The Tall Ships Races 2023 saw the Tall Ships fleet take part in an epic race series as they sailed from Den Helder, Netherlands, to Hartlepool, UK, Fredikstad, Norway, Lerwick, UK, and finish in Arendal, Norway.
You can relive each race leg thanks to the YB satellite tracking system below.
The Tall Ships Races 2023: Race Two, Report Four
Race Two of The Tall Ships Races 2023 has continued in exciting fashion and seen a number of the fleet cross the finish line.
The race between Statraad Lehmkuhl (Norway) and Fryderyk Chopin (Poland) continued down to the wire, with the Norwegian Class A finishing only 20 minutes ahead of her Polish competitor in a photo finish.
Elsewhere, Class B saw Jolie Brise (UK) continue their longtime success in the races as the only ship to finish so far. In contrast, Class C is balanced between finishers and those still sailing, with Esprit (Germany) leading the way in the water.
Of course it’s all still to play for in the final placings once the Time Correction Factor is applied and final declaration times are submitted by the Captains.
The leaders of each class at the time of publication are:
Statsraad Lehmkuhl (Norway)
Betty (Denmark)
Rupel (Belgium)
Esprit (Germany)
Belfer (Poland)
Saeftinghe (Belgium)
Urania (The Netherlands)
Tara (Denmark)
Patricia (Belgium)
The Tall Ships Races 2023: Race Two, Report Three
The third day of racing has seen the Tall Ships fleet continue to enjoy excellent sailing conditions and the leading ship on the water, Dar Mlodziezy (Poland) delivering a stunning performance to cross the finish line at 21:53 UTC last night (Tuesday 12 July).
Throughout the fleet, there has been an exciting battle with changes in the top positions in Class A, Class B and Class Class C. With the TCF factored in, Dar Mlodziezy has jumped up two places to lead Statsraad Lehmkuhl (Norway) in second and Fryderyk Chopin (Poland) in third in Class A. Both ships are within touching distance of the finish line, fighting neck and neck.
In Class B, Denmark’s Betty has made amazing progress to pass both Swan (UK) and Rupel (Belgium), putting them second behind leaders Jolie Brise (UK), who are no strangers to success in The Tall Ships Races. In Class C, it was another Polish ship, Belfer , who made their way up the placings to third in Class.
Class D saw no change with Urania (the Netherlands) still leading Tara (Denmark) and Patricia (Belgium).
The Tall Ships Races 2023: Race Two, Report Two
After two days of sailing, Dar Mlodziezy (Poland) leads the way on the water as the fleet close in on waypoint one, closely followed by Patricia (Belgium) and Urania (the Netherlands) vying for 2nd and 3rd place in line honours. With the crucial Time Correction Factor in place though it’s another Class A ship, Norway’s Statsraad Lehmkuhl, who leads the field overall.
The fleet have enjoyed more favourable sailing conditions with 25-30 kts wind speed pushing the fleet to over 15 kts on their way to Fredrikstad. With these conditions set to continue, it won’t be long before the first arrivals in Fredrikstad.
Swan (UK)
Vahine (Finland)
The Tall Ships Races 2023: Race Two, Report One
After yesterday’s dramatic race start, the fleet are making progress towards Fredrikstad and experiencing some excellent sailing conditions.
“To quote the captain of Urania, they are enjoying ‘champagne’ sailing conditions! The sun is shining and they have 15 knots of wind. All appears to be going to plan and it seems that the fleet, who are in quite a compact area, are all getting similar wind conditions and speed.” The Tall Ships Races 2023 Race Director, Magda Makowska
Betty (Denmark)
Belfer (Poland)
The Tall Ships Races 2023: Race One, Report One
With challenging head on westerly winds still affecting the Tall Ships fleet as the make their way to the start line, the Race Operations Committee decided that the start gate will remain open after 1200 UTC.
This change will mean all ships in the fleet will have the chance to pass the start line for Race One, with final placings decided by their progress over elapsed time.
When the time came to start the race, it was the Class D yacht Patricia (Belgium) that made it across the start line first. Race Director, Magda Makowska, gave an update on the fleet’s progress and the upcoming weather conditions.
“With the start gate still open, we’re just waiting for the remaining vessels to pass and begin their race to Hartlepool. There are some big waves out there still providing challenging conditions for the fleet.
The forecast is looking to improve for the fleet in the coming days though, and we expect them to enjoy some great sailing conditions as they make their way along the course to the finish line and the upcoming celebrations in Hartlepool – which will be well earned after Race One!”
Race Director, Magda Makowska

Ratings and Reviews
Great app but needs update.
I love this app! It is amazing to watch your races in simulation. However, the app needs refreshing and bug fixes as iOS updates seem to be causing more frequent crashes.
UNBELIEVABLE! Your own race analysis!!!
This app is completely unreal! The level of in-depth analysis performed completely blows my mind! Forget watching the America's Cup, download this app and use it in your next race (and get your competitors to do it too) and you can have an in depth analysis of the race! Who was late to the start? Where was the lay line? How much of a lead did you have in the middle of leg 2? Best VMG? Who was in a wind shadow? What angle got you your best speed? Did you really have overlap when you got the the mark circle? What was your top/average speed? Who sailed the shortest distance? Did you miss the tack on that big header? We're your tacks wider than Jim's? Anything you want to see, this app can do it! Note that the analysis is best viewed on a computer; the app records your track, speed, pitch, heel, distance, etc, and will display it in real time, but to really get the most of the analysis and compare your performance to that of the other boats, you need to go online on a PC or Mac, or possibly a tablet. Create an account. It's easy, it's free, and it's just so you can track and manage your replays. No spam emails or paid subscriptions. This app is a phenomenal tool to review your races to learn and improve performance, or even just to compare and get Bragging rights! Recording is simple, tap the button and go! And with raceqs geovids, you can even sync your GoPro footage to the raceqs replay!
This is amazing!
Could not say enough great things about RaceQs. Super in depth and very versatile, this app does everything from Course Over Ground to heel angle.

- The 10 best smartphone apps for sailors: proven through experience
Technology is evolving. Gone are the days when sailors relied purely on the basic equipment on board their boat — a chartplotter, GPS navigation and a pilot of the region. Nowadays, almost every modern sailor has a bunch of apps installed on their smartphone. So, we've asked our skippers which are their favourite apps they use the most. Here is our list of the top 10 sailing apps tried and tested over hundreds of logged miles.
1. Navionics: Boating Marine & Lakes
In our opinion, this is the best app for navigating your boat (but also for diving, fishing or other water sports). You'll find an incredible amount of information in it, from conventional GPS navigation to bay depths, harbour data, and contacts . Plus, it allows you to share your live location so your friends or family can follow your route online. We at yachting.com consider Navionics to be a basic part of any smartphone sailing kit ! The only downside is that it is a paid app, but it's worth every penny.
- Purchase Navionics at www.navionics.com
2. Windy.com app
The Windy app and the windy.com website are one of the most well-known sources for boaters to check the weather forecast. In addition to wind direction and strength, you can find forecasts for temperature, waves, rain and cloud cover. Just like with any forecast model, it can't be relied upon 100%, so you should always pay attention to the actual conditions around you as well. Windy Premium, the paid version provides a more accurate forecast and more regular updates without ads.
- Download the Windy app at windy.app
YACHTING.COM TIP : Clouds have been a source of fascination since the dawn of time. However, you don't need to be an expert meteorologist to know what to expect from looking at the clouds. In fact, this knowledge is practically essential for sailors. So, how do you read the clouds? Check out our article to find out — Sailing: how to predict the weather by reading the clouds .
3. Anchor Watch / Alarm
An anchor drag alarm or anchor watch basically does exactly what the name suggests — it emits a signal (alarm) when your boat drifts outside your designated security zone when at anchor . There are many apps available with this function, but Anchor Alarm is the one that works best for us. When you drop anchor, simply press the position button and adjust the perimeter you don't want to leave — for example, after taking into account the surrounding rocks and your proximity to shore, you might decide that you want to set the perimeter so that your anchor won't drag more than 15 metres. The app will remember where your anchor is located and will keep an eye on your position throughout the night. Should your boat move outside the set boundaries, it will trigger an alarm on your phone.
- Get the app on the App Store or Google Play.
YACHTING.COM TIP: Review the basic rules of anchoring in our complete guide to anchoring and moorings . We've covered two specific scenarios where you might need a little extra help. The first is on how to prepare your boat for a stormy night at anchor and the second one is a guide to the Mediterranean Mooring technique, a combination of anchor and mooring lines often used in Greece — How to moor stern-to: a step-by-step guide .
Navily is more of an app for recreational sailors where you'll find more than 14,000 anchorages and 6,000 marinas with photos and reviews from the community. There are also more than 700 partner marinas where you can book a berth directly via the app. The premiums version unlocks core features, such as automatic itineraries and distance calculation at sea. Navily claims to be the most innovative cruising guide.
- The app is available at navily.com
5. How to Tie Knots
Every skipper should have a masterful knowledge of sailing knots for every situation and should ideally be able to teach the crew. But, at the very least, you could install an app on their phones and get them to learn themselves. For this, we recommend the app How to Tie Knots which uses 3D animation to provide a realistic experience of tying knots using a virtual rope. There are countless apps out there for learning to tie knots so if you find something more suited to you, there are plenty of options. After all, they all have the same goal: to teach you how to tie knots.
- Find this app and similar ones on the App Store or Google Play.
YACHTING.COM TIP: Ropes or lines are one of the most important things on board any yacht and you simply can’t do without their ability to fasten, join and connect. Mastering at least a few basic sailing knots is essential for sailing, anchoring and moorings. It's not just beginner sailors who make mistakes , so we've prepared a guide to 9 essential sailing knots for all your boating needs.

This is one of the best-known breakdown assistance services for sailors. SeaHelp is a 24/7 rescue service that includes insurance and reliable assistance at sea should you break down or have an emergency. There are three types of membership available online and the app can then help you with things like towing your boat, starting, bringing fuel, fetching parts, freeing lines from the propeller and weather advice. The SOS button can also be used by non-members of this service and sends out a distress SMS with your current location and mobile number. After receiving the message, SeaHelp immediately calls back to verify there is a problem and if there is a real emergency, sends a rescue boat. If you sail frequently or are planning a more challenging voyage, we highly recommend setting up this service.
- Find the app and purchase a membership at sea-help.eu .
YACHTING.COM TIP: In the event of an accident or mishap during your voyage at sea, deposit insurance will save your nerves as well as money. Are you hesitating whether it is worth taking out? In our experience, it definitely is! Check out our article on the most common reasons for losing your boat rental deposit and if you would like advice on deposit experience, feel free to get in contact with one of our representatives .
MySea is a free interactive guide to marinas, harbours, jetties, buoy fields and restaurants in Croatia, Greece and Turkey . For each marina, it provides information on the type of mooring, safety regarding the direction of winds, services (showers, toilets, petrol pumps, supermarkets, etc.), entertainment and dining options on-site. There is also a current weather forecast for the area with a bird's eye view. The app includes thousands of user reviews on individual marinas and berths can be booked directly via the app. Even admission to Croatian national parks can be paid for via MySea.
- Find it at my-sea.com .
8. Marine Traffic
Marine Traffic comes in especially useful if you are sailing in areas where there are a lot of cargo ships. This platform provides real-time information on marine traffic, live port arrivals and departures, as well as gross tonnage and registration number of the cargo ships moving in your area. If you are heading to the English Channel, the Baltic Sea or are planning a voyage further offshore, the risk of collision with a cargo ship is much higher. Bear in mind that the captain of a large tanker cannot see small sailing vessels, so it is best to give them a wide berth.
- Take a look at the live map of cargo ships at www.marinetraffic.com
9. VesselFinder
Similar to Marine Traffic, VesselFinder provides a live map, on their website and app, of the network ships using the AIS system — over 200,000 ships a day! In addition, it allows you to search for a specific ship and find its current location and more information on the vessel itself. View the ships and their position on the map in real-time or look at their previous routes, sailing history and, where applicable, marina reservations. It is also possible to create your own fleet of friends and track the individual boats of the whole group.
- Find out more about the app at www.vesselfinder.com
The VesselFinder app displays current marine traffic on a map, but you can also search for a specific ship, and view its current location and sailing history
10. Tide Alert (NOAA)
Recommended for all those who sail in tidal waters (France, the Baltic, Scotland...), it provides all the information you need so you don't get caught out by the tide, such as predicted tide height, the moon phase, etc. The whole Tide Alert (NOAA) environment is user-friendly, intuitive and easy to use. Plus, there is an alarm feature to alert you to a low or high tide. And best of all, the app even works offline if your signal drops out.
- Download it on the App Store or Google Play.

Offshore sailor Henry Bomby shares his top iPad yacht apps for racing and cruising
- April 7, 2015
Solo sailor Henry Bomby uses an iPad for everything from navigation and AIS to weather forecasts and routeing. We asked him to choose his favourite apps

Few new products have changed the way I navigate at sea so much as the tablet computer. In my case that means the iPad, although most of the sailing apps I mention here are also available for Android tablets.
Although iPads should only be used as a back-up or as an aid to a standalone navigation set-up, their high GPS speeds and accurate charting applications make them really useful as chartplotters. Only the 3G iPad has a built-in GPS aerial (lower spec models use wi-fi). This will pinpoint your location regardless of whether or not you have a mobile phone signal.
It just connects via bluetooth so you can mount it anywhere in the boat. I use the GNS 2000 MFI, which costs £89.50. Although it is a bit of a bulky set-up, it has a super-fast GPS speed and is a cheaper option than upgrading to a new iPad 3G.
There are two ways to use an iPad, or other tablet device, on board: as a standalone computer using apps or as a remote display link to another computer (or as both). All of the best boating apps can be downloaded from the likes of iTunes or Google Play and manufacturers’ websites are provided for more information.
Best iPad apps for navigation
Transas iSailor
This is my favourite navigation app. iSailor has one of the largest chart databases worldwide. Its charts are generated from official vector charts and I have found them to be very reliable. It’s a useful tool when you’re racing as far inshore as you dare off coasts such as Brittany. The charts are continually updated and the updates are free. However, charts per zone are among the most expensive, the UK South Coast charts cost £17.49. Price: app free, average chart price £17.49. www.isailor.us
TimeZero is a part of MaxSea, the renowned routeing software company. An appealing part of this app is that you can opt to use raster charts, which are scanned copies of paper charts, for many areas – a comfortable transition to electronic navigation for anyone used to paper charts. You can also download areas to your iPad, so chart loading while zooming in and out is extremely fast. TimeZero provides a 3D perspective, which is great for entering unfamiliar ports. I use this app more and more. Price: app free, average chart price £34.99. www.maxsea.com/maxsea_timezero_ipad_app
The most popular charting app, Navionics has similar tools and functions to TimeZero. I don’t use it because I have the routeing program Adrena for more complex tasks. However, it is a very sound bet and its charts for numerous sailing areas are cheaper than those of iSailor. For example, high-definition charts covering the whole of UK and the Netherlands cost just £39.99. Price: app free, average chart price £34.99. www.navionics.com/en/mobile-pc-app
Best iPad apps for race starts
This is packed with features, including GPS, AIS and an NMEA input for displaying boat instrument data (available as additional in-app purchases). I primarily use this for the start line feature. It calculates line bias and has a metre countdown for distance to the line. Price: iRegatta Basic £6.99. www.zifigo.com
This app has impressive starting features, including time and distance to the line, and it works well as a big and easily viewable COG and SOG display, freeing up your other instruments to display other useful information. Better still, it’s free.
Price: free. www.itactic.it
Best iPad apps for weather forecasting
This app demonstrates the potential of tablet navigation. It is only available on Android for now, but there are plans for a release in the Apple app store soon. It lets you download and view weather models from a variety of sources, including Great Circle, Saildocs and NOAA. You can run routeing information through the app. A growing catalogue of polars helps make the routeing calculations more accurate. GRIB files, polars, routes and routeings are all saved in standard formats and are transferable. Impressive. Price: standard app free, Pro £3.99, WR routeing £20. www.sailgrib.com
The iPad equivalent to SailGrib, though also available as an Android app, Weather4D is less powerful, but is still packed with some great features. It has a good GRIB viewer, including a 3D view of the world, which I really like. As with SailGrib, a subscription allows you to download different weather models such as GFS, CMC and the French WRF model, down to a resolution of 0.04°. Weather4D Pro can run routeing in a similar way to SailGrib. However, the operation for this is more complicated. Good, but not quite the complete package yet. Price: standard £7.49, Pro £23.99. www.weather4d.com/en
Best apps for wind tracking
iRegatta has a great, user-friendly interface to track the wind. You can set the wind angle on each tack and can shoot head-to-wind just before the start by taking a photo directly into the wind. The app then helps to keep track of windshifts and easily illustrates the timings of an oscillating breeze with a neat diagram in the bottom right of the screen.
Price: iRegatta Basic £6.99. www.zifigo.com
Best apps for tides
Tides Planner
This is my favourite app to keep track of tides and currents. You simply scroll through its list of destinations to find the tidal height at different times at 8,000 world locations, including all US, Europe and Australasia stations. Tidal stream data is provided for UK, Ireland, Belgium, Holland and parts of Germany and Denmark. The app also has useful information such as tidal coefficients and the times of sunrise and sunset. It is free, but it’s worth buying its tidal atlases of the UK coast and the Bay of Biscay for only £2.49. You can easily flick through this to get an understanding of what the tide is doing.
Price: free, UK/Bay of Biscay tidal atlas £2.49.
www.tucabo.com/products/tides-planner
My iPad set-up
I use my iPad on deck all the time, so I need a fixed point on deck where it can be left on charge and can be detached easily if I need to move around. I have mounted it near the companionway, on the starboard side using 3M Dual Lock, the very strong Velcro-style fastenting strips.
Secured by this, my iPad is easy to view from the helming position on both sides and is well protected, so I can use it when starting a race as easily as when I head offshore and switch it to charting and navigation, using software to display AIS data and position myself within a fleet. I also have a 12V charging port just inside the companionway, so that the iPad is charging when it is in its dock.
Short-handed offshore racing is all about making life as easy as possible and the iPad is a great tool for supplying all the information I need, and more.
Henry Bomby, 23, is one of Britain’s most promising young offshore solo sailors. As part of the Artemis Offshore Academy Scholarship scheme, he completed a fully funded season in the solo one-design Figaro class. He sailed in this circuit for a further year and is currently competing for his third year on the Figaro circuit. See www.henrybomby.com
