What is a Gulet?

A Gulet is a traditional Turkish wooden sailing yacht that is designed explicitly for cruising along the beautiful Turkish coast. These vessels are known for their elegant design, spacious interiors, and comfortable accommodations. Gulets typically range in size from 15 to 40 meters and can accommodate anywhere from 6 to 20 passengers.

Gulets are built with a combination of traditional craftsmanship and modern amenities, offering a perfect blend of authenticity and comfort. Each Gulet is unique in terms of design and layout. Still, they generally feature cosy cabins with en-suite bathrooms, a spacious deck for sunbathing and dining, and a fully equipped kitchen where the onboard chef prepares delicious meals.

The beauty of a gulet lies in its ability to provide an intimate and personalized cruising experience. Unlike larger cruise ships, gulets can access smaller and more secluded bays and coves, allowing passengers to explore hidden gems inaccessible to other vessels. With their friendly and experienced crew, gulets offer a warm and welcoming atmosphere, making you feel at home throughout your journey.

Gulet Cruising in Turkey: The Best Sailing Holiday You’ll Ever Have

Historical ruins, beautiful beaches, sleepy fishing villages and world class marinas make gulet cruising in Turkey an experience no other country in the world can replicate. Cruising the Turkish Riviera is not a new phenomenon, but it never appealed to mainstream holiday markets until the last decade when the Internet shifted people’s perception of travel.

Pre 2000, holidaymakers relied on travel agents to plan itineraries; but they now embark on independent forms of travel including gulet cruises around Turkey’s stunning coastlines.

Nostalgic Beginnings of Gulet Cruising in Turkey

Gulet cruises also called Blue Voyage routes began 70 years ago. The exiled “fisherman of Halicarnassus” Cevat Sakir Kabaagacli, arrived in Bodrum in 1925 to explore the Aegean Sea and surrounding coastline destinations.

He invited friends to join him, and they spent their time sponge diving, fishing, and wandering the Turkish Riviera. As a talented group of authors, word soon spread about their lazy days and explorations.

We wonder if he knew his lazy days would later become a popular aspect of holidaying in Turkey. From a three-day mini Blue Cruise to a two-week itinerary, experts with years of experience and passion for showing off the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts plan the adventure.

Holidays in Turkey: Sail the Turquoise Coast

A gulet boat is a Turkish wooden sailing vessel. As masters in building gulet boats, Turks used them as fishing vessels, but when tourists requested accommodation overnight so they could stay on board, they adapted the design and these days, they feature all modern cons of a luxury vessel.

beautiful beaches in Turkey

Resorts like Bozburun on the Marmaris peninsula and many Bodrum peninsula villages have established strong reputations for boat building expertise and experience. A gulet boat varies in size and carries from eight to twenty passengers, each with private sleeping cabins. Everyone gathers on deck in the communal area for breakfast, lunch, and dinner if they choose not to dock into seaside resorts to visit restaurants.

Most equipped boats have scuba diving, fishing equipment and designated sunbathing areas if the holiday plan is to soak up Mediterranean sun rays. Traditional boats are the perfect sailing vessels, but in recent years, modifications turned vessels into motorised yachts. Either way, it is a thrilling experience.

Cruising Hubs in Turkey: Antalya, Marmaris, Fethiye, Bodrum

The Turquoise coast stretches from the northern Aegean to the eastern Mediterranean. Winding its way from West to South, it comprises over fifty small bays and villages and many ancient ruins that add a twist to cruising the Aegean and the Mediterranean Sea. Passengers put together itineraries depending on historical sites or Turkish coastal resorts they want to see. They also follow established Blue Voyage routes. Out of all the coastal hubs, four emerged as major destinations.

Gulet cruising in Turkey

Bodrum: As the heart of where it all began, Bodrum’s reputation stems worldwide as an expert in gulet cruises, private yachts charters, and sailing holidays. The peninsula comprises a major town centre and smaller coastal resorts that do luxury in style, as often seen in substantial mega yachts docked into bays. Out of all the seaside resorts, Yalikavak has shot to yachting fame because of its mega yacht marina.

Fethiye: While Bodrum does luxury in style, Lycian Fethiye attracts budget holidaymakers with low cost, three-night trips to Olympos, further east along the coastline. This blue voyage route takes in many delights like Fethiye’s twelve islands, Oludeniz and the Blue Lagoon, the prestigious resort of Kalkan, and Kekova sunken ruins.

marinas in Turkey

Marmaris: As a pioneer of Turkey’s tourism industry, international sailors have always favoured Marmaris. During summer, cruises depart from the harbour area to cruise around the coastline to visit hidden coves, off the track islands, and beautiful beaches.

Antalya: The eastern Mediterranean is home to Antalya , the second most popular holiday destination. Antalya’s reputation for top-notch hospitality also wins it rave reviews from the yachting world. Even just sailing the Antalya coastline delights everyone as excursions to attractions like Mount Tahtali, Aspendos and Chimaera’s burning flames make every day different.

Themed Gulet Cruises Around Turkey

Gulet holidays are the epitome of rest, relaxation, and fun under the sun. Turkey’s various coastal resorts and mass range of historical landmarks are core themes, and most cruises are all-inclusive or half board, so all you must do is remember your swimsuit and sun cream. But holidaymakers take it one step further by theming their cruise.

Yoga cruises have received much fame over the last five years, and we understand the popularity. Nothing rejuvenates the sense more than the sea, while sun provides copious amounts of vitamin D. Combine that with a healthy fresh diet and morning and afternoon yoga sessions on deck, you’ll return from your cruise as a new person.

Sail Turkey

A lot of round-the-world backpackers enjoy single cruises on party boats, while couples often choose luxury cruises on small boats. Three other alternative themes are private yacht rentals, where you and the captain craft your itinerary. Cruise and stay gulet holidays are the perfect way to combine sailing with around the country land tours, and island hopping between Turkey and Dodecanese or Cyclades Greek islands combines two cultures with one.

Whether you sleep in your cabin or on deck, under the stars, wake up to a delicious breakfast. The Captain then starts sailing to the next destination, to dock anchor and serve lunch on board, or if the yacht docks into a coastal resort, passengers enjoy free time to explore and eat in many restaurants.

Depending on where you are, they run excursions to archaeological sites or you can take advantage of water sports like jet skis, swimming and snorkelling and para-gliding. Contact us to receive more information via email on what you need to know when sailing Turkey.

Ionian Islands Cruise Itinerary

Aphrodite /   harmonia  /  eros /   hera   (or similar gulet) .

Take an Ionian Islands gulet cruise and enjoy the beauty of Corfu, Paxos and other stunning Greek Islands.  The Ionian Islands are an emerald scattering of seven main islands:  Ithaca, Corfu, Kefalonia, Lefkada, Paxos and Kythira – found off the west coast of mainland Greece. The region is famed for pristine beaches, the unforgettable blue of the sea, and the lush Mediterranean landscape. Several lesser-known smaller islands make up this paradise cluster. The Ionian Island Gulet cruise is best suited for those who want to set sail with simple style basic Gulet (not expected any luxury)  for discovery, heritage and historical sightseeing, the best of nature and deserted beaches, on-deck sea-view unwinding and the friendly atmosphere of a traditional Gulet cruises. The friendly crew will attend to all your needs along the way. There are freshly prepared meals (Breakfast and Lunch), and all cabins are simple style basic furnishing include a private bathroom and air-conditioning.

Day 1:  Corfu - Kassiopi

As today is the arrival day and we don’t set sail from the Old Port (NAOK marina) until after sunset, you have plenty of time to explore the wonders of Corfu Island. The UNESCO World Heritage town of Kerkyra (Corfu Old Town) is full of cultural heritage from its days under Venetian, French and British rule. From architecture to traditions, towering fortresses to the narrow medieval streets, you can feel the multi-layers of Corfu island history. If you have time to see more of the island, don’t miss the chance to explore the fishing village of Agni Bay, the dramatic cliff drops of Cape Drastis, the picturesque channel of the Canal d’Amour and the tucked-away community of Palaiokastritsa. In the evening, we get acquainted with our sailing home for the next few days and get settled in, starting by dining with a view of the ocean as we set sail towards Kassiopi. Note: On the rare occasion of any issues that may result from late arrivals, there is a possibility that we do not depart Corfu on Monday evening, and instead set sail on Tuesday morning.

Day 2: Sivota - Mourtos

The rainfall on the Ionian Islands is what enables its lush and verdant landscapes to flourish. Think of thick forests, natural coves, green hills with olive groves, and ardent valleys that sit back-to-back with crystal clear waters and sparkling white beaches. You can find this in the Mourtos and Sivota Islands, south of Corfu, where we sail and stop to marvel at some of the island best natural highlights. This includes the striking Papanikolis Cave and the famed Blue Lagoon Bay, where you can swim in the iridescent blue waters. In the evening, stroll the traditional Marina village and take your pick of Greek eats from the idyllic tavern-lined promenade, where you can watch the sunset.  - Optional local tours: Syvota Cooking Class

Day 3: - Parga

Nestled on the Ionian coastline of the Greece Mainland, Parga has been described as one of the region’s most beautiful villages. This is because of its two crystal clear bays that line either side of its main town and the iconic Venetian fortress that forms an impressive backdrop. Known for its stunning natural environment that gives it an island feel, there are plenty of beachside hangouts and watersports to enjoy the coastline views, especially in the large bay west of Parga town. We will have lunch onboard, but stay in town for an evening of Greek feasting and hospitality. Note: If the vessel manages to dock in the port, you will not need to use a water taxi. However, if you need one, the cost of the Water Taxi is not included in the overall price package.  - Optional local tours:  Parga Wine Tasting

Day 4: Antipaxos

Not many people know of Antipaxos, overshadowed by the main island of Paxos, but you will be glad you got to experience this lesser-known beauty spot. First, we fuel up with a lunch before stopping for some coastal relaxation time at some of the islands secluded, tranquil bays that are home to the beaches of Voutoumi and Vrika. Go snorkelling in the turquoise waters, feel the pebbles under your feet, take a walk amongst the clifftop surroundings and visit one of the three main towns – Gaios, Loggos and Lakka. We will dine at a pop-up beach tavern in a secluded bay tucked away from the crowds, and later watch the stars from the deck of the yacht.

Day 5: Gaios - Paxos

With white pebble beaches, striking blue seas and lush green countryside, Paxos is one of Greece’s best-kept secrets. We will dock at the port of Gaios ready for a full day on the island. You can easily explore with a motorcycle, although it’s also easy by foot, bike or car too. Spend the day seeking out the secluded coves and bays for swimming, enjoy the Venetian architecture of Gaios town or sample the world-renowned olive oil from the surrounding groves. Watch the fisherman go about their work from one of the seafront cafes, before enjoying some of the best and freshest seafood at one of the excellent local tavernas that stock the best catch of the day.

Day 6: Lakka – Paxos

Dotted with secluded bays and sea caves, with shallow waters for those keen to explore the underworld of the Ionian Sea, this part of Paxos Island is an explorer’s dream. Enjoy lunch on the vessel while we sail towards bustling Lakka, the second largest village on the island set in a horseshoe bay to a backdrop of olive and cypresses trees. Visit the pebbled Kanoni beach and sandy Harami beach and wander amongst nature. Later, stroll the vibrant promenade along the seafront. Full of bars and tavernas Lakka is the epitome of old school Greek charm. We will dock overnight at a picturesque bay here.  Captains evening dinner.  Note: The vessel cannot dock in the marina in this area.

Day 7: Corfu

Before we head back to the mainland of Corfu Island, with free time to explore, we take the chance to fit in one more of Corfu’s long sandy beaches. We visit the beautiful Benitses Beach and village on the east coast of the island, enjoying an onboard lunch on the way for some final sweeping sea views. We spend the night in the Marina of Corfu Old Town, where we enjoy a Captain’s dinner with the group in our final farewell. - Corfu Bus Tour - Corfu Greek Night

Day 8: Return Journey

As we come back in full circle to Corfu , this is our departure day, where you’ll say goodbye to your new friends and your crew. Hopefully, we have inspired you with this Greece sailing trip and hope to see you next year for more sailing around the Greek islands.
