The Truth About Katie Maloney And Tom Schwartz's Relationship

A closeup of Tom Schwartz, smiling

"Vanderpump Rules" has been on air since 2013, and there have been more hookups and breakups than we can possibly hope to count. Lisa Vanderpump's "The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" spinoff series follows the interpersonal lives of a group of fabulous waiters and bartenders at her West Hollywood restaurants. Or at least, it did before they all got rich and became reality TV personalities instead of struggling service-industry workers. While Stassi Schroeder and Jax Taylor broke up, through Tom Sandoval and Kristen Doute 's neverending relationship fallout, through a Scheana Shay wedding and quick divorce, only one couple remained consistent: Tom Schwartz and Katie Maloney.

"Katie Maloney, you're the love of my life, and I want to spend the rest of my life with you," the TomTom owner said, down on one knee in a Season 4 episode . Katie, who had given her floppy-haired boyfriend an engagement ultimatum that he blew right through, said yes. Their relationship, though, hasn't been a fairy tale; although their relationship's length far outweighs their friends', they have had their ups and downs, their arguments, and their cheating scandals, just like everyone else in the "Vanderpump" cast . Read on for the truth about Katie Maloney and Tom Schwartz's relationship.

Tom Schwartz got confused during their first blind date

Before the reality show that would make them famous was a mere glimmer in Andy Cohen's eye, Katie Maloney's SUR coworker (and future "Vanderpump Rules" co-star) Kristen Doute introduced her to Tom Schwartz, then a "mactor" — a model-slash-actor. Schwartz was living with another Tom — Tom Sandoval — who Kristen was dating at the time, and she figured he would get along great with her friend Katie. Schwartz didn't quite get the memo, though, and apparently brought someone else to the hangout where he was supposed to be meeting his future girlfriend. Katie later recalled to Bravo's " Daily Dish " that, "He had a girl with him, that was the funny part was that finally I'm meeting this guy that supposedly wants to meet me, that's so perfect for me, and he's got a girl with him." Schwartz's own memory of the event is a little more harsh. "The very first night there was no spark," he said. "But the second night I was introduced to her and given a little backstory, that's when it clicked."

On a 2020 episode of Katie's podcast " You're Gonna Love Me " where she interviewed her partner, she recalled how she made the relationship official. "I basically asked you to be my boyfriend and you said, 'Well, I don't know if I'll be a very good boyfriend, but I'm down to give it a shot,'" she reminded Tom.

The early years of VPR

A split image of Katie and Tom arguing

In the early years of "Vanderpump Rules," Tom Schwartz was more of a friend-of rather than a full cast member; he appeared on screen mostly in the context of being Katie Maloney's boyfriend and Tom Sandoval's roommate, and he didn't even make it into the group shot in the infamous slow-mo opening credits . Though he still hadn't been promoted to full-time cast member status by Season 2, Schwartz was fully involved in the drama. In a shocking episode set in Mexico for Stassi Schroeder's group birthday trip, the two argued over a comment from Scheana Shay that Katie might have a drinking problem. Schwartz defended Scheana from Katie's anger, leading Katie to ask her boyfriend, "Why do you insist on humiliating me?"

In a shocking moment, the fight then culminated in Schwartz dumping a drink on his girlfriend's head while telling her, "F*** off, man." While her friends dried her with napkins, Katie realized aloud, "I have this relationship all wrong. This relationship is so ... this relationship is f***ed, man."

Schwartz apologized, and the two were able to rebuild their relationship. Years later, on " Watch What Happens Live ," the man who played a fairy in the background of a "True Blood" episode told Andy Cohen that he still made amends for the drink-tossing incident. "I have thoroughly [apologized]," he insisted. "I do on a weekly basis."

Tom Schwartz walked off a job

Tom Schwartz bartending at Pump

By the third season of "Vanderpump Rules," Tom Schwartz joined the cast full time. However, after donning the bar's trademark pink shirt and loose tie, he walked off the job his first day after suffering from a panic attack. "I was crippled with the fear of not being able to keep tabs/make drinks/make service drinks/chat with customers, etc.," he wrote for a Bravo blog . "I started to get into a negative thought loop, which eventually led to shallow breathing, which soon escalated into a full-on panic attack."

The show has had some questionable approaches to mental health over the years, and this incident was no different. As the New York Post noted, Lisa Vanderpump called her instantly-fired employee a "p***y" for not being able to handle the pressure. She wasn't the only one; Katie was unhappy with her man and laid into him during an argument at home , saying she felt embarrassed for having asked Lisa to give him a job. "If we have kids, what, are you gonna have a panic attack?" she snapped, before adding sarcastically, "My boyfriend couldn't handle his bartending job, but he's gonna be a great father."

"This makes me so mad! If Schwarz genuinely had a panic attack, then Lisa is being extremely insensitive," one fan wrote on Reddit .

They share a nickname

Tom Schwartz wearing a Bubba necklace

Anyone who has watched a bit of "Vanderpump Rules" that includes both Katie Maloney and Tom Schwartz knows what we're about to say: the two really, and we mean  really  love to call each other "Bubba."

In a behind-the-scenes feature for Bravo , the couple discussed the origin of the nickname. Katie told the cameras that it came about early on, before they were on television. "Bubba started from babe," she explained. "And then it went from Babe to Baby to Bebe... to Bub to Bubs to Bubba." Language sure does evolve ! Schwartz pointed out that it wasn't just a random, but a nickname that worked for them. "It felt right without thinking about it too much or dissecting it," he said. Before their marriage, Katie joked , "I can't wait to be Mrs. Bubba Schwartz," and it frequently shows up in her Instagram captions for her husband.

The word has ricocheted around the Bravo-verse, and it figured into one of the couple's most explosive fights: the aftermath of cheating allegations. In a 2018 episode of the show, Lala revealed that a friend of hers claimed to have made out with Schwartz while he was drunk, and that he called her Bubba. Katie told Us Weekly that she was particularly upset with that detail, explaining, "That really is our name for each other. For this girl to insinuate that he was mistaking her for me or that he was, you know ... that's what grossed me out."

Lisa Vanderpump officiated their wedding

Katie Maloney, Lisa Vanderpump, and Tom Schwartz at the altar

It famously took forever for Tom Schwartz to propose to Katie Maloney. At Scheana Shay's wedding, Schwartz got his girlfriend alone and took out a jewelry box, leading Katie to fear he was about to propose at someone else's wedding. Instead, he pulled out a ring on a necklace, which Katie was not happy with. "It's not really what a girl pushing 30 wants to hear,"  she told him . "At this point in our relationship, a ring should have strings attached, not attached to a string. I felt like it was a pacifier without really having to make commitments," she wrote in a blog for Bravo .

An actual proposal followed, and in 2016 they were soon wed in front of their closest friends and family (and the Bravo television crew). The wedding was officiated by none other than the namesake of "VPR," Lisa Vanderpump herself. Reading out their vows, she asked Katie if she took Tom as her husband "for richer and for richer," drawing big laughs from the audience.

Afterwards, Lisa gave them her gift: a business proposal for Schwartz and his best friend, Tom Sandoval. She told the Toms that she and her husband were considering opening a new restaurant in West Hollywood, adding, "A bar always needs a face, and we were thinking of calling it TomTom." The commitment-phobic Schwartz immediately replied, "I can't let you do that. If it fails, it's on us!" He would ultimately come around, and TomTom was born.

Their sex life is fodder for fights

Tom in bed, looking insulted

The famously argumentative couple got into numerous on-camera fights over the course of their time on "Vanderpump Rules," with both members of the couple learning early how to push each other's buttons. One of Katie Maloney's favorite insults has to do with Tom Schwartz's manhood. In an argument leading up to their wedding (used to promote Season 5 ), she shouted after him, "Let's talk about how your d*** doesn't work." He fired back, "My d*** works great."

Years later, on yet another group vacation to Mexico, Tom and Katie argued so loudly on their hotel balcony that their friends in nearby rooms could hear every word. On the same trip, Katie insulted the size of Tom's member, taunting, "Tom, your p**** is this long" (She held up her fingers close together to indicate the size). "It's just a nice, classic p****," Tom protested. Talking with his friends Tom Sandoval and Ariana Madix after the fight, Schwartz reflected, "I don't like when Katie belittles my p****. It's nice."

One of their worst sex-based arguments happened in Season 8, when Tom and Katie fought at Jax Taylor's 40th birthday party. "That's why I don't have sex with her," Schwartz spat, upsetting his wife and their friends. Though he apologized on a "Vanderpump Rules" After-Show (via Bravo ), Katie clarified, "We go for the jugular a little bit. We just say outlandish, mean s*** that we don't mean. And we don't take it seriously. It's f***ed up."

Cheating allegations dogged Tom Schwartz

Though their relationship made for one of the longest-lasting commitments on a show where it seemed like their castmates hooked up and broke up every other week, Katie Maloney and Tom Schwartz had their rocky moments, too. Throughout their relationship, the two repeatedly butted heads about various incidents where Tom may or may not have cheated on his wife.

After rumors flew about a drunken make out in 2018, Schwartz admitted that he had been drunk enough that he wasn't sure whether he had cheated on his wife. "I don't even know how that happened and it's so regrettable, I'm so embarrassed ... especially for my age," Schwartz told Us Weekly . After the incident, though, Maloney insisted that she trusted her husband. "I generally think that if he did in fact make out with this person that he doesn't remember, that it was just simply because he was blackout drunk."

Still, though, Maloney told Us Weekly that she did worry about her husband's inability to discuss serious issues together. "I get frustrated with Tom ... Oftentimes when there's serious issues or something that he ... confrontation that makes him feel uncomfortable, his go-to is just joke and laugh about it," she reflected.

They bought a house together

Katie Maloney and Tom Schwartz posing together

In early 2019, "Vanderpump Rules" stars Tom Sandoval and Ariana Madix bought a $2 million home in the Valley Village neighborhood of Los Angeles (per RealityBlurb ). It turned out, they wouldn't be lonely in the area for long: in quick succession, two more "VPR" couples took the same step. Katie Maloney and Tom Schwartz bought a similar home with a slightly-less-hefty $1.9 million price tag (per RealityBlurb ) that spring, and then Jax Taylor and Brittany Cartwright were soon to follow (via E! ).

In a series of Instagram stories, Katie and Tom showed off their new abode by inviting some of their famous friends over to check it out. Former SURver Kristen Doute (who dropped a cool million on a house all on her own around the same time, per Bravo ) told Katie (via Us Weekly ), "I think this hallway is bigger than your old apartment!" A more official get together aired on the Season 8 premiere of "Vanderpump Rules," which saw Katie describing her view for the party as "Not a housewarming; it's a house-chilling." Both members of the couple agreed that the image they wanted their marital home to give off was "comfy chic," and when Schwartz gave a house tour to their co-stars, he made sure to point out what he called "a great pooping bathroom." As Lisa Vanderpump would say, Oh, Schwartzy.

They remarried

Katie Maloney and Tom Schwartz posing at their second wedding

Even though Tom Schwartz and Katie Maloney were married by Lisa Vanderpump back in 2016, a couple of years later they realized there was a problem: they never filed the legal paperwork. Lance Bass leaked the news, according to Us Weekly , a few weeks ahead of what wound up being a second wedding altogether — this time in Vegas. The wedding was Western-themed; Schwartzy dressed up in a fringed outfit and cowboy hat, according to photos from the event on Instagram . The happy couple also received a gigantic flower heart arrangement from their former officiant; the sash across the gift read, "Let's get it right this time!"

Katie was in good spirits about the situation, explaining in a behind-the-scenes Bravo video that she actually wanted to have a Vegas wedding as a kid. After her mother reminded her of her childhood wish, she recalled, "I was like, 'Oh my God!' Dreams don't always look the way they look." Lisa, too, found humor in everything that went down. "That was kitsch and it was funny. It was everything that a wedding kind of shouldn't be," she said.

Though Katie's commitment-averse husband wound up having to marry her twice , he told Bravo he would recommend other people avoid doing the same. "I like wearing the ring and I like saying 'wife,' but I don't think you need to bring the government into it," he joked. "I don't know. People should be very careful."

Tom's bestie came between them

There are lots of things that can cause arguments in a relationship, and Katie Maloney and Tom Schwartz are no stranger to several of them. One major source of strife in their marriage: their "Vanderpump Rules" co-star and Tom's BFF Tom Sandoval. "VPR" fans know that " Schwartz & Sandy " have been inseparable best friends since before either one signed up to be on reality TV, and thanks to Lisa Vanderpump's idea to make both of them business partners in a restaurant bearing their names, Sandoval is inextricably a part of the Maloney-Schwartz family life.

However, Katie's not much of a fan; she expressed on Season 9 of the show that she wanted to be more involved in her husband's business, especially as he and Sandoval planned to open up a second location. Sandoval considers himself a big-picture guy, while Schwartz is happy to go along with whatever his friend wants; that partnership doesn't sit well with Katie, who expressed multiple times on the show that she wishes her man would stand up for himself more. According to Bravo , Katie was especially upset when Sandoval took credit for bringing money into their marriage. "Without Schwartz, there would be no Tom and Tom," she insisted. "You can't take credit when there's two people in a duo."

Addressing their frequent and intense quarreling on " Watch What Happens Live ," Sandoval insisted, "We love each other, man!" Schwartz agreed, "It's love-hate. Mostly love... some hate."

They tried to have kids

When Katie Maloney dropped the news that she was purchasing a house with hubby Tom Schwartz on an episode of " Watch What Happens Live ," she agreed with host Andy Cohen that the news was exciting. "I know; now we can have babies," she said. However, even though numerous "Vanderpump Rules" couples became parents over the COVID-19 pandemic — including Stassi Schroeder and Beau Clark , Lala Kent and Randall Emmett , Jax Taylor and Brittany Cartwright , and Scheana Shay and Brock Davies — no Maloney-Schwartz baby materialized.

Schwartz told People , "As far as the timeline, I'm still noncommittal, but I'm on the record — it's official, we do want to have kids, and I love kids." He added that Kent's daughter Ocean was cute, clarifying, "I don't have baby fever, but yeah, love some babies."

Their fertility journey was chronicled on Season 9 of "Vanderpump Rules," which revealed that they had been trying for a child but had not yet been able to conceive. In a memorable scene from the show, Schwartz went in for fertility testing, and part of the paperwork caused the couple to disclose that they chose to have an abortion early in their relationship. Agreeing with one another that it was absolutely the best decision and they likely would have broken up had they tried to become parents so early, Katie concluded (via E! News ), "Everyone, every woman, every person should be able to decide what's best for them."

They share two adorable pups

dogs Butter and Gordo, sopping wet and peeking out of a bath

The early years of the COVID-19 pandemic were hard on everybody, and a lot of people turned to their pets for a source of comfort. That was true, too, for Katie Maloney and Tom Schwartz, who have two dogs together named Butter and Gordo von Friedenheimer. Schwartz told Bravo that their pups were essential in getting them through, recalling, "They were our companions, you know, when things were at their worst. They were always there for us. They brought us a lot of joy this year."

Schwartz first brought Gordo home in 2014, surprising Katie. In a blog for Bravo , the commitment-phobic reality star wrote, "I joked about getting a dog to buy me time in regards to having kids/marriage but I was being facetious. I wanted to get a dog to surprise my girl and because we have a lot of love to give! I love dogs." However, when it came time to add Butter to the family, Schwartz admitted being hesitant in a video for Bravo . "I was a little standoffish at first, I didn't like the idea of having another puppy ... but now I've fallen head over heels for Butters too."

In the wake of their later split, Katie told the " Relationsh** " podcast that she and Tom would be sharing custody of Gordo and Butter.

They announced a divorce in 2022

Katie smooching Tom's cheek in selfie

Season 9 of "Vanderpump Rules" depicted a number of intense arguments between Tom Schwartz and Katie Maloney, including numerous fights about Katie's potential involvement in Schwartz's new bar with Tom Sandoval. Not all of the fights were shown on camera; in a confessional, Katie spoke about being "really annoyed" by her husband staying over Sandoval's house late into the night. "So I jammed the door shut," she confessed. "When he came home, Tom busted down our door like the Kool-Aid Man." Fans online were concerned by the revelation; one Reddit post, for example, questioned why the show played off what seemed like a serious incident as "a cute funny story."

Sure enough, mere months after Season 9 finished airing, Katie and Schwartz shocked the Bravo universe by posting a divorce announcement to their respective Instagram pages. In her post , Katie wrote, "After twelve years on an adventure through life together Tom and I are ending our marriage." Schwartz, though, went into much more detail; in part, he wrote to his fans, "Well this sucks ... Katie & I are separating. I'm not quite ready to use the 'D' word yet bc it's too painful." Painful or not, Katie filed divorce papers several days after the announcement (via TMZ ).

Though that seems pretty final to us, their TV boss Lisa Vanderpump told Us Weekly that she disagreed. "I don't think the fat lady has sung yet," she said.

They're trying to stay friends

Tom Schwartz hides his face while Katie Maloney makes a goofy face in selfie

News of Katie Maloney and Tom Schwartz's impending divorce shook the Bravo universe; the couple had been one of the longest-running on the show, but it was not to last. Still, in their announcements of their split, both indicated that they didn't want people to feel torn between them. "As sad as I am, still happy to say there's zero anger or bitterness," Tom wrote on Instagram , while Katie's post read, "This ending is not met with resentment or animosity, no sides to choose ... we cherish our friendship." A source elaborated in an interview with People that the two had felt more like "roommates" for a while.

It seems that, so far, this approach is working out. The two posted a "cheers to friendship" on their Instagram stories (via RealityTitbit ), and they traveled to Italy (via E! News ) to support former co-star Stassi Schroeder at her wedding to Beau Clark. They even showed up to the Vegas opening of Lisa Vanderpump's newest restaurant, where Katie told Us Weekly , "Tom and I have been really supportive. It's been, you know, the best, healthiest, positive thing that I can ask for, honestly."

Schwartz's business partner and best friend Tom Sandoval, though, was shocked by the news. "It literally, like, b***h slapped me across the face. I had no idea," he said. "Like, totally knocked the cool out of my walk." Thoughts and prayers for Sandy at this difficult time.

Katie Denies Motorboat Accusations On 'Vanderpump'

did katie motorboat a guy reddit

It's been a few weeks since one Vanderpump Rules cast member hurled infidelity accusations at another, but don't you worry. That wasn't the last cheating rumor of the season. Monday night's episode hit us with a brand new Vander accusation: Some time before the episode taped, Katie allegedly not only kissed a random dude’s neck, but motor-boated his crotch at a club. (Um, I'm sorry. What? Motor-boated his crotch? MOTOR-BOATED HIS CROTCH?! To quote Stassi, “Wait, do people do that?”) Jax and Scheana say they witnessed the aforementioned motorboat display. Katie denies it up and down. Tom Schwartz doesn’t care either way. He says hooking up with other guys is not Katie’s modus operandi, so if it really did happen, he'd dismiss it as being nothing more than a "piss drunk" one-off. Both Tom Schwartz and Katie want to let it go.

But Scheana, Jax, Tom Sandoval, and Kristen refuse to let it go. They don't care that Tom Schwartz wants to move on. Scheana, Jax, Tom Sandoval, and Kristen A) are not fans of Katie and B) were not let off the hook that easily when they cheated. They are not ready to let Katie off the hook that easily for allegedly motor-boating some guy's junk.

Something that hadn't dawned on me before: Prior to Monday night's ep, Tom Schwartz and Katie were the only two SURvers in the main cast who have not been at the center of at least one cheating scandal on this show. (OK, OK, Scheana’s drama happened pre- Vanderpump Rules , but I'm going to count it.) Looks like the universe/the producers/the stars in the night sky deemed it Katie's turn to be raked over the coals.

Did Katie actually motorboat a rando's groin and smooch said rando's neck? I don't know, man. Jax and Scheana stuck to their story, and Katie stuck to her story. I hoped for a definitive answer by episode's end, but that answer never came.

Next Monday, the script is flipped: Tom Schwartz is accused of cheating on Katie. OH, BROTHER. It never ends. (And thank goodness for that.)

Vanderpump Rules Season 3 Episode 5 Recap: Does Katie Maloney Motorboat Crotch?

By Author Free Britney at Dec 02, 2014 • Category Ariana Madix

Last night on Vanderpump Rules Season 3 Episode 5, Kristen and Tom returned to work at SUR after being suspended, while Stassi was given a big opportunity by Lisa.

Meanwhile, Tom Schwartz made a HUGE commitment (well, for him anyway) in hopes of appeasing Katie’s concerns, while she also faced some hard core accusations.

What did those consist of, and how did everything go down (sort of literally)?

The Hollywood Gossip Logo

Picking up where Episode 4 left off, Vanderpump Rules Season 3 Episode 5 saw Schwartz try to get out of the doghouse after quitting his job at PUMP spectacularly.

To show he can commit to stuff, while also delaying marriage talks with Katie Maloney, he adopted a rescue dog! Which was silly looking but so, SO cute.

So cute, in fact, that she envisioned the puppy as the ring bearer in the wedding Tom desperately wants to avoid thinking about! So that totes backfired!

Meanwhile, if you watch Vanderpump Rules online , you know Lisa Vanderpump and Stassi Schroeder are often at odds. Well, this week things are good.

In fact, Lisa hired Stassi to be her stylist for a photo shoot, a gesture she felt was generous as the youngster could put the experience on her resume.

Yet Stassi didn’t see it that way, feeling Lisa treated her like an assistant and not a professional. Lisa, for her part, felt her former staffer was ungrateful.

All of that took a back seat to the drama with Katie and Jax Taylor , however.

According to Jax and Scheana Marie, not only is it possible to motorboat someone’s crotch, but Katie did just that, between some unidentified actor’s legs!

Jax began relaying that Katie had cheated on Schwartz in this manner, a dubious claim because it’s Jax, a man who lies like he gets pointless nose jobs.

Still, Scheana claimed she saw the entire incident, so the rumors spread.

Sadly, the actor who supposedly had his crotch motorboated by Katie Maloney was never revealed, but Jax and the accused motorboater had words.

When Tom Sandoval , Tom Schwartz and Jax joined Katie for brunch, Sandoval and Jax just grilled her on this alleged incident, while Schwartz did nothing.

Seriously. He just freaking sat there while Jax tore his girlfriend a new one.

The Hollywood Gossip

Vanderpump Rules Cast Photos

Beyond whimpering “Bubby” a few times (whatever the heck that means), he did not stick up for his girl one iota … or ask if the rumor was true for that matter.

Katie eventually stormed off after getting railroaded by that douche Jax.

When Tom Schwartz ran after her, did he at least defend her stance or comfort her? No, he told her that she was basically the instigator in all of this.

Now there’s a standup guy. Totes future fiance and husband material.

Short Answer

Motorboating is a behavior often associated with men, typically in a social setting such as a bar or club.

It involves moving the face rapidly from side to side, in close proximity to a woman’s chest.

It is often seen as an expression of male sexual attraction and is sometimes used as a way to show off to other men.

It is also sometimes used as a way to show respect or appreciation for a woman’s physical features.

What is Motorboating?

Motorboating is a term used to describe a physical interaction between two people in which one person places their face close to the other person’s chest and makes a motorboat sound with their lips.

This behavior is often seen as inappropriate, and it is not uncommon for guys to engage in this activity.

The motorboating sound is created by puckering the lips and blowing air out of the mouth.

This causes a motorboat sound, similar to the sound of a motorboat engine.

The sound is often accompanied by a physical gesture, such as shaking the head or body, or a combination of both.

The reasons why guys motorboat may vary, but some of the most common motivations include a desire to be humorous, to express an appreciation of the other persons body, or to show off in front of friends.

Whatever the motivation, it is important to remember that motorboating should only be done with the permission of the other person.

In addition to the physical act of motorboating, it is also important to take into consideration the cultural and social context in which this behavior occurs.

For instance, motorboating may be seen as a form of flirting or a way to show off in front of friends.

It is also important to note that motorboating may be seen as an act of disrespect or even sexual harassment in some cultures.

Therefore, it is important to take into account the cultural and social context in which motorboating is taking place before engaging in this behavior.

This could be an attempt to appear cool or confident, or to make an impression on those around them.

This behavior could also be a way of demonstrating a sense of humor, as motorboating is often seen as a humorous gesture.

Finally, some guys may motorboat simply out of curiosity.

They may be curious about how it feels, or they may be intrigued by the notion of motorboating and want to try it out for themselves.

Whatever the reason, it is important to remember that motorboating should always be done with the consent of the other person.

The Appreciation of Physical Appearance

It is important to note that motorboating is only acceptable when both parties are comfortable with it.

Even if a guy is joking around or trying to show off in front of his friends, motorboating should never be done without permission.

If the other person is not comfortable with motorboating, it can be seen as disrespectful and intrusive.

Additionally, motorboating should never be done in an unprofessional setting.

It is inappropriate and improper to motorboat in the workplace or any other place where boundaries should be respected.

In order to ensure that motorboating remains an enjoyable activity, it is important to remember to always respect the wishes of the other person.

If they are not comfortable with motorboating, then it is best to stop and apologize.

Motorboating should only be done with mutual consent, and with an understanding that it is meant to be a fun and lighthearted activity.

Respectful Tips For Motorboating

When it comes to motorboating, it is important to remember to always be respectful and courteous.

Motorboating should only be done with the permission of the other person, and it should never be done in a way that could make the other person feel uncomfortable or violated.

Before engaging in motorboating, it is important to ensure that the other person is comfortable with the idea.

If the other person is not comfortable with motorboating, then it is important to respect their wishes and not proceed with the activity.

When engaging in motorboating, it is important to be aware of the other persons body language.

If the other person appears to be uncomfortable or uneasy, it is important to stop immediately.

It is also important to be aware of the situation and the people around you.

Motorboating should only be done in private, as it can be seen as inappropriate and disrespectful in a public setting.

Finally, it is important to remember that motorboating should be done with respect and consent.

Motorboating should never be done in a way that could make the other person feel violated or uncomfortable.

If the other person is not comfortable with the idea of motorboating, then it is important to respect their wishes and not proceed with the activity.

Final Thoughts

Motorboating is a behavior that is not uncommon among guys, and can be motivated by several different reasons.

While it can be a fun way to express an appreciation of physical appearance, or to be humorous, it should always be done with the permission of the other person.

Respectful motorboating is the key to ensuring everyone feels comfortable and valued in the situation.

Whether your goal is to show off in front of friends or to express appreciation, remember to always ask for permission before motorboating.

No Proof For Rumors That Katie Ledecky Had 'Come Out' as Trans

Ledecky is the first woman to earn 20 world championships gold medals. it's not the only reason people were searching her name in july 2023., izz scott lamagdeleine, published july 27, 2023.

On July 25, 2023, U.S. swimmer Katie Ledecky tied Michael Phelps' record for the most individual swimming titles at the 2023 World Aquatics Championships. She also became the first woman to earn  20 World Championships gold medals.

However, that wasn't the only reason people were searching Ledecky's name online in July 2023. Around the same time, rumors began to spread that Ledecky had "come out" as a transgender woman.

The claim spread as rumors continued to swirl about Lia Thomas, who has faced  anti-trans vitriol while becoming the first transgender woman to claim a national title in swimming. They also spread as World Aquatics, the governing body of swimming, was reported  to have an "open category" that would include transgender swimmers in a trial of such a category after effectively  banning trans people from competition previously.

We found posts about the claim on Twitter and Facebook . In addition, we received reader mail asking us about the claim. An article wondering if Ledecky was a trans woman appeared as a top Google News result when we searched "katie ledecky":

A screenshot of top stories from Googole News includes one that asks if Katie Ledecky is transgender.

 (Google News)

We also found claims about Ledecky being trans had been posted on social media platforms like Twitter since at least 2022.

There is no evidence that Ledecky has come out as trans. In this story, we'll break down how the rumor spread, previous accusations of Ledecky being trans, as well as how these accusations have been leveled against other athletes and celebrities. We reached out to Ledecky and will update this story if we get a response back.

How Did July 2023 Rumor Spread?

As we stated above, Ledecky has never said she is trans. We could find no public statements she had made about trans swimmers, other trans athletes, or trans people in general, which would have been widely reported by reputable publications.

Nevertheless, that didn't stop many articles to baselessly state Ledecky had recently "come out" as transgender. When we searched "Katie Ledecky trans" on Google , we found at least two articles with the baseless claim had been written since July 25, 2023, in addition to the featured Google News article.

The article aggregated by MSN and featured by Google News was written by a publication called MEA WorldWide (MEAWW). On the website's About Us page, it described itself as, "One of the world's fastest growing entertainment news publishers." The article's date of publication was July 26, 2023. It was headlined, "Is Katie Ledecky transgender? Swimmer ties Michael Phelps' record for most individual titles at World Championships."

The article claimed:

American competitive swimmer Katie Ledecky recently came out as a trans woman, as per several reports. Her career took off when she made her international swimming debut at the 2012 London Olympics at a young age.

The article didn't link to "reports" as proof of the claim, and there's no proof the reports exist in the first place. Citing anonymous or unknown sources of information is often indicative of misinformation. We reached out to the organization about the claim and will update this story if we hear back.

Previous Allegations About Ledecky Being Trans

The claim about Ledecky being trans has spread before. In 2022, a screenshot of a Twitter   exchange about Ledecky went viral on the platform and spread to other social media platforms like TikTok .

The screenshot showed an exchange between three different Twitter accounts. The first account posted a picture of Ledecky, along with the caption, "Idk that's just kind of how athletes look." The second account replied to the post and said, "Very male build. Maybe this individual should compete with the…males." A different account replied to the second account and said, "That's Katie Ledecky. A cisgender woman."

We CaN AlwAyS TeLl pic.twitter.com/c2nj1Oarur — Erin Reed (@ErinInTheMorn) March 20, 2022

The picture was indeed of Ledecky. We found the photograph on Getty Images with the caption, "Kathleen Ledecky of United States celebrates her victory in women's 1500m freestyle on day five of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games at Tokyo Aquatics Centre on July 28, 2021 in Tokyo, Japan." The picture was taken on that date.

In addition, we also found at least one article that included the baseless claim about Ledecky being trans from 2022 when we searched her name on Google.

Other Baseless Allegations About Athletes Being Trans

Ledecky isn't the first athlete to have her gender questioned in such a manner.

In fact, it's happened for decades: NBC News reported that U.S. Olympic runner Helen Stephens' photograph appeared below the caption, "What Do You Think? Is This a Man Or a Woman?" in 1937. Her biographer  told the publication that Stephens lost valuable career and scholarship opportunities in the aftermath of the incident.

It happens to other celebrities, as well. In 2023, baseless claims began to spread that actor Daniel Radcliffe's pregnant girlfriend, Erin Darke, was a trans woman. In an article about the incident, Irish public broadcaster RTE said:

Not looking 'feminine' enough has been a rod used to beat successful women throughout history and is still employed today (Michelle Obama, Lady Gaga, Simone Biles, Caster Semenya) which quickly bleeds into homophobic rhetoric, where cis women are attacked for looking 'manly' or 'like lesbians'.

There is no evidence that Ledecky is trans. The story picked up steam as articles baselessly spread the claim, even though we could find no public statements from her about trans swimmers, other trans athletes, or trans people in general.

Motorboating; what is it, 'why?', and how to fix it?

I just completed a build of a little Single Ended EL84 guitar amp. I tried to follow a schematic from a Fender Tweed Princeton amp as best I could, but this was a 'left-over' parts project and I really had to rather 'make due' in some cases. The Princeton schematic uses a 6V6 and is at a much higher voltage than my PT could produce. I have a schematic for a similar amp that Antique Electronic Supply sells as a 'kit'...there MOD102 kit. I also incorporated parts of it into this build as well; particularly the output section and PS supply. I did use a choke......a Hammond unit, a 156 I believe......1.5H, 200ma, 50 ohms. Anyway....... the amp is about 98% there! It's up and working, has 'acceptable' numbers in most places. I've got about 230V on my EL84 plate, about 190V on the screen, and about 125V on the two 12AX7 plates. I'm running a 150 ohm cathode resistor, bypassed with a 100uf/100V cap, and showing about 5V across that resistor which I believe calculates to about a 32ma current draw on the tube...which is a 'new' JJ 6BQ5. I say I'm at about 98% because I have one remaining issue, which is that the amp will 'motorboat' from about 3/4 volume level on up. If kept below this level, it sounds and plays fine. But, hit about 2/3 to 3/4 on the VC and it breaks into this oscillation........audible even with the guitar vc turned all the way down. So, just looking for some suggestions as to what to do about this? Any help would be appreciated. Many thanks!! Tom D.

Tom Bavis

Motorboating is a low frequency oscillation, often due to feedback though the power supply. Coupling caps shouldn't be too big, power supply filters may have to be larger if your supply has more droop than Fender's original. The original 5E2 circuit used 22K and 8 uF for the filter to the two 12AX7 stages - you may have reduced that resistor - if so (or even if not!), increase that filter cap and see if it helps. Also try a bigger filter cap after the choke.

BinaryMike

Ultrasonic oscillation due to poor circuit layout can sometimes present as motorboating, if it pulses because of grid blocking. It's especially important to keep output stage anode wiring well away from the signal path in low-level stages. A scope would tell the story.

My PS filters are: 1 & 2, 47uf @ 350V, 3, 22uf @ 350. That should be more than ample to support the 'upgrades' from Fender's 8uf. Coupling caps: Actually this amp was built using the tone circuit from a 5E2 Princeton. That amp uses a 250K pot for it's tone control, with a .0005 on one side of it.....going to the plate of the 12AX7, and the other end to the input side of the tone pot. The other side of the tone pot goes to a .005 which goes to ground. There's still a .02 from the first plate connected 100K ohm resistor...then to the input side of a 1 meg VC pot, where the other side of the VC pot simply goes to ground. I should mention that the wiper of the tone control goes to the junction of the 100K resistor at the input side of the VC pot. MIke, I'm going to go back and look at layout issues...... but I'm thinking I should be OK. Hard to tell.......and I wish I had the 'scope' skills to figure it out that way. I'm wondering if the fact that this problem doesn't resent itself unit you get to 2/3 to 3/4 of the drive level on the VC doesn't mean something? If I were to cut the voltage by increasing the resistor......do you think that might change anything? TSD

dr*audio

Fish fingers and custard!

Does it motorboat with no input connected if you turn up the volume? If so check all ground connections and look for ground loops caused by multiple connections

Dr. a, yea, it does do it with nothing plugged in. I also have a 'grounding' input jack......so, the input grid on the first section of the 12AX7 is 'grounded' . I guess that means that the problem lies somewhere within the tone control part of the circuit, the Volume control, and the second stage 12AX7, yes? I didn't see any obvious 'grounding' issues, but I don't have any kind of 'star' ground with this......it's more of a 'chassis' ground much like the way the AES kit is designed and built.

The 6BQ5 screen shouldn't be connected to the same power supply node as the 12AX7s - it draws more current than they do, so variation in screen current makes the supply voltage change, which makes the plate voltage on the first stage change, which gets amplified by the following two stages.. and the screen current changes some more. So, move the 6BQ5 screen to the FIRST B+ point like Fender did, and increase your cathode resistor to get back to the previous bias point.

If you can post a high resolution schematic, such that we can zoom in on it and it doesn't look too small to read, that would be helpful.

Doc, posting a picture of the AES MOD schematic. That was what I used as the basis for both the power supply and output section. The tone section came from the 5f2 Princeton schematic. I used a 10K on the input (along with the 1 meg), and the both 1.5K 12AX cathodes are bypassed with 25uf/25v caps. Tom, my PS is a CT type PT with the CT to a chassis ground, and both HV outputs to a 1N4007 diode. The output of the diodes goes to a 47uf cap and the Hammond choke. The output of the choke is the B+.....along with another 47uf cap. The OT is connected here as well. From there I go to a 18K / 1W resistor, which feeds the screen, a 22uf cap, and a 1K resistor. This 1K feeds the 12AX7. What I'm now thinking is that I should have yet another filter cap in this section.......as at this point, I don't. I'll try putting something there and see what happens. Would be great if that's all it took!!

Are you saying you did not have a power supply cap for the 12ax7 preamp section? And do you have that 100k resistor there as well on the 5f2 schematic?

Yes, I came off the 22uf to the screen......and also a 1K that fed the two 100Ks that went to each 12AX plate. Tomorrow I'm going to see if I've got another 22 or a 20uf @ 350 or 300V and put that at the 1K and see what happens! Hopefully that'll fix it!! If not....back to the drawing board.....and the forum!! TSD Larry.... you know I've got one of each around here, plus a little Yamaha on the little John boat! TSD

Inclined to agree about splitting the screen and the driver stage power supply up. Honestly I'd run the output transformer from HV, the screens from B1 and the driver from B2 but thats me. Adjust the 200 ohm cathode resistor if needed to get the bias right, and/or increase the size of the 100 ohm resistor if you really need less screen voltage. As it is, the screen supply will sag horribly through a 22K resistor. I guess that might be on purpose, I can't get my head around guitar amps though. Stuff that is sometimes done on purpose there would be something you'd just cringe at in a hifi amp.

Thain, that's rather the idea behind me doing this. In having built about 20 of Mr. Gillespie's Magnavox 8600 amp, I think I understand that unit fairly well now. Not completely, but I think I've got the basic idea. I also built that MOD102+ kit from AES. Pretty simple, and it worked perfectly well. I ended up finding 3 power transformers, 2 of which were the 269EX and one that was about as close to the 269EX as I think you could get. I also had some SE 5K output transformers, so I decided to attempt to build another of the amps similar to the 102+ kit. If I haven't mentioned it already, the '+' version of the 102 Kit is rated at a slightly higher output wattage (8 vs 5), and comes with a few extra bells and whistles like having a 'pull' switch on each of the 3 controls; 1 for 'bright' on the treble control, pull for 'mid boost' on the bass control, and the VC pull switch adds some further gain to the amp.....or so it's supposed to do. The '+' also comes with a 3-way off/standby-on/run power switch vs just off/on. Anyway, I wanted to build just a simple SE EL84 version of something like the tween Princeton of Champ.......so using those diagrams as well as both the MOD102 and the '+' diagram, I set out to build the thing based on using the 3rd of my PTs as well as one of my existing OTs. The idea was to keep it as simple as possible, but have a 'tone' control vs no tone or Bass/Treble. So, I had to figure out how to run all these different aspects together into one amp....using my parts, and actually making it work. And, aside from the motor-boating problem, I'm 'almost' there! So, to address this motor-boating, the suggestion is to move my screen supply to the same place as the B+. Just another question before I do this, and I think Tom Bavis addressed it with his post above. But, in doing as suggested, the Plate and the Screen on the OT are going to be at 'about' the same voltage.....and in so doing, I'm going to experience a pretty significant increase in current draw from the tube. In looking at that MOD schematic (in my post #9), they're running both the 6BQ5 screen AND the 12AX7 from the same B+2 position and that amp doesn't have that problem. I also wonder if the difference in voltage between 6BQ5 Plate and Screen....if that's not part of what is producing some of the characteristic sound of the amp? I know that in many Hi-Fi amps the screen and plate are at about the same voltage level. I've seen some schematics where the plate is actually running at a lower voltage.....but I believe most of these diagrams are where a UL OT is used. But, in this MOD design, the difference is pretty great.....like 75+volts! In moving the plate and screen voltages to being nearly equal, will I loose some of the performance aspects of the amp that are actually rather appealing as a guitarist? Also, I think this is going to play hell with the Bias......and I'll be looking at using something like that 470 ohm resistor that Fender used on that Princeton as pictured above in post 9???

OK, after reading Tom Bavis's post above, I got to thinking about how I'd addressed my builds on Dave Gillespie's Maggie revisions.......and in that build, like the MOD102, both have only 3 stages to the PS. However, when I construct Dave's amp, I add a 4th stage because I add a dropping resistor after my 5AR4 rectifier. In this revised MOD build, I added a choke. So..... in effect I also had 4 stages, but had only put a PS cap in 3 of them. My 1 - 3 stages had 'capacity', but my 4th stage, after my 1K resistor and in feeding the plates on the 12AX...I had no cap. So.....I added one! I dug through my supply of filter caps, found a 20uf @ 350, and installed it at that 1K resistor. Problem fixed!!! Motor-boating is gone, and the amp plays great from just barely opening the VC all the way to full throttle! The ONLY symptom that it exhibits that I find a bit odd is that at about 3/4 volume there is a dip in the noise level. As you go from all the way 'down' to gradually turning 'up' the VC, you begin to hear some amplification coming from the speaker. Even with nothing plugged into the amp...which 'grounds' the input jack...there is still some audible noise as you turn it up. But, at about 3/4 to 7/8 of the way up...there's like a 'spot' where the noise level drops off. Yet, when I 'play' the amp......the sound increases throughout the sweep of the VC. So, no 'dead spot' in amplification......just in that background noise. I'm going to live with it for now! The amp sounds great and performs well, and should be easy to 'repeat'. My next step will be to attempt to draw up a diagram of the final product, post it, as well as do a little photo shoot of the thing and post that as well. To all above, MANY THANKS for the guidance and suggestions. I'm sure the other changes suggested might have worked equally well......but this 'final fix' seemed easiest to try, and having it solve the problem, I'm just glad I don't have to go through and mess around with trying to get the bias right again. Happy Soldering!! Tom D.

I don't know that I'd move the screens to the same place as the B+, I'd move both the screen and the plate "over one". Output transformer straight off the rectifier, screens after the 100 ohm, driver after the 22K. If the screen sag is integral to the sound of the amp, leave the screens where they are and add another branch off the supply with a 22K resistor to a cap. Feed the driver off that. I wouldn't tie the driver downstream of the screen just because they will still have some level of interaction that might cause you trouble. basically the idea is to not have the screens and the driver connected together so they can't interact with each other.

Thain, I get what you're saying, and I understand the idea. I may give a shot at trying your suggestion....just to see if it makes the amp sound any different/better. BUT...that said.....as it's working now, it's really pretty impressive for a little 'flea' guitar amp. I've heard a lot of these over the years, including OE Fender units......and a good number of them didn't sound nearly as good. This one is still a bit 'gainy'......in that it's into 'break-up' after about 1/4 to 1/3 on the VC. But......from a 'player' perspective, that's not necessary a bad thing. It becomes a matter of 'how' it breaks up.....if it's 'controllable'.....and not so compressed or 'faltering' that it just sounds bad. So, I'm really not all that disappointed with that aspect of it. The little 'noise' glitch rather confounds me.....but not to any level that I believe it's in need of further attention. Rather, I'm just going to consider it as a personality trait. But, if changing the PS leads around as you suggest can correct that....then perhaps it's worth a try. I just know that this change will 'initially' play hell with the bias......and that's another balancing act that takes time too. Anyway.......all good comments and thoughts......so, many thanks! Tom

I'd say the noise is VERY 'typical' of guitar amps! As my amp is built, I have a 10K resistor off the input jack and going directly to the input grid on the first stage of the 12AX7. The MOD amp uses just a straight wire, and the original Fender uses a 68K. I chose the 10K only to temper the input just a bit, without really bedding it down. I tried to build it such that all the passive parts made connections without needing any further leads or wires. But, where the VC connects to the input grid of the second stage of the 12AX, I DO have a shielded wire there! With the exception of the plate lead to the second stage, I don't think I have any 'wires' cut to make any connections. Even my input grid connection to the 6BQ5 is made directly with the resistor vs any leads. I just built one of the MojoTone Tweed 'Deluxe' kits......and this amp that I just build is, I believe, much quieter. 'Noise' isn't really a problem. You mention taking a class.......is this one of Gerry Weber's 'Amp Camp' deals? I know he does those pretty regularly! I have had many good conversations with him over the years. About 20 years ago (or so) I was DEEP into guitar amps! I not only owned a good number of them, but I had people in the area bringing them to me for 'repair'. I think over the course of about 6 to 8 years or so, I must have gone through well over 200 guitars amps for one reason or another. In 'collecting' them myself, I couldn't afford to have them professionally 'tuned up'.....or have hums fixed, or anything else for that matter! I was buying these things at junk stores, pawn shops, music stores, etc, all over the east coast as I traveled from town to town, state to state. Any 'deal' I could find on a guitar or amp.....I bought it! Single life and 'divorce recovery' will do that to you. I also got myself into a band......so I justified all this by 'playing' as well. Of course, I'm absolutely NO GOOD!!......lol. But....I had fun. Anyway, the need to fix all these things necessitated me learning how to do that myself....as I couldn't afford the professional costs of service. Luckily for me, I had a good Mentor in the form of Jeff Bober, formerly of Budda Amplification and now of 'East' amplifiers! Budda got sold to Hartley Peavey....but it was quite successful for a good long run. I think Hartley killed it! Anyway, to finish the story...... the band broke up....and I wanted to move......so I sold about 90% of all that I had, closed up the basement shop, and move from Annapolis to Baltimore. Along the way I discovered an old Dynaco ST-70. That was 20 years ago now.....and it's been 'home audio' ever since. But, this sticking my toe back into Guitar amps is kind of fun. I believe I was still very much in the early learning stages back then. While I could 'set a bias' or change coupling caps, or even make a broken amp work again.....I had no real understanding of what I was doing. That has come to some level over the past 20 years with the home audio stuff. But, even now, I struggle, as indicated here in this thread. Not putting a 4th cap into the PS filter section is rather a 'rookie' mistake IMHO! I hope you have fun with building the amp you're going to build. I think the Princeton schematic above is a pretty good choice if you want at least one tone control. I think some of the Champ amps had just a VC....which in retrospect is perhaps how I'd do it next time! The guitar already has a tone control....so why add one to the amp? (rhetorical question....not a conversation starter!!....lol) OK.....gotta run! TSD

Very cool! I would enjoy one of webers classes, I will be using one of his alnico speakers in my amp but no to it being his class. My circuit analysis teacher is really into building guitars so he has a guitar building class at the college that I don't need but just want to take for fun. I'm always showing him the stereos I'm working on and he is always working on his guitars, really cool electronics teacher. Thanks to getting into audio circuits about 5 years ago and audiokarma and youtube the electronic courses are a breeze.

Motor boat

With so many different types of boats available, we bring you this beginner's guide to Motorboats. We hope it will help you make the right choice when buying a boat.

What is a motorboat?

A motorboat is a power driven vessel with an internal combustion engine driving a jet pump or propeller. Even a sailboat, while it has an engine running, is technically a power driven vessel. The term motor boating refers to motorised cruising vessels used for leisure.

A little bit of history!

Many names contributed to the invention of the motorboat. Charles Raymond Hunt was responsible for introducing the deep v-shaped hull in 1963, one of the motorboats most important advances. Renato Levi is given credit for the evolution of the motorboat, particularly developing unique concepts - improving the performance of racing boats. Rudolph Diesel also helped make advancements in motorboat industry. He is best known for inventing a 25-horsepower, four-stroke, single vertical compression engine.

Types of motorboats

A speedboat is a small motorboat designed to move quickly. It is often used in races and for water skiing. Even inflatable boats and dinghies with a motor attached are classed as types of motorboats.

The three popular variations of motorboats are: inboard, inboard / outboard and outboard. If the engine is fitted within the boat, it's called a powerplant. If it's a removable section attached to the boat, it's known as an outboard motor.

Motor cruisers offer a range of amenities, depending on the number of passengers and the type of the cruising. They range from small vessels equipped with basic essentials for a short cruise to much larger holiday crafts complete with shower, cooker and sleeping accommodation.

Where to begin

All first time motorboat cruisers should have some form of training. As a rule, the larger the motorboat and the longer the journey, the greater the level of training is required.

Beginners can rent small vessels for a short cruise, without needing much training. This will help you get to grips with the basic motorboat controls. Courses are available for beginners which cover the basic areas of handling the boat. The Royal Yachting Association offers three levels of courses, from a two day helmsman course offering basic boat handling, helmsmanship and engine maintenance to a five-day coastal skipper course.

A great way to start motorboating is to combine your motor boating course with a holiday, either in the UK or across the European mainland. A number of well known activity holiday companies are RYA training centres and offer courses with certificates.

Where to use your motorboat

Motorboating is the perfect way to explore Britain's many rivers –the Norfolk Broads, the Yorkshire dales, the historic city of York and the River Thames.

But there is no need to limit cruising to UK waters. Ireland, Germany, France and many other European countries offer a number of beautiful and interesting waterways.

From inland lakes to rivers and overseas, motor boating offers a relaxing and fun pastime. Unlike sailboats, there is no need to wait for the right wind conditions before setting sail.

2 cycle or 4 cycle??

It's a low frequency oscillation that can sound like someone blowing rasperries, ir can even sound like a very low note played on a tuba. If the frequency is really low, it an sound like a small engine putting.

In reference to scanners and digital audio, it refers to hearing the digital noise that is a voice transmission, before it's been decoded back into voice. I never considered it to be a motorboat type sound until people on RR started calling it that - it was most often referred to as a diesel engine before the motorboating comment came around. There's a sample of digital Motorola IMBE audio (sometimes called P16) here .
