Altena Yachting is a shipyard in Raamsdonksveer that was founded by Gerard Pols. The yard specializes in building luxury yachts and has built up an excellent reputation in the shipbuilding industry over the years.

The origin of Altena Yachting is due to Gerard Pols' passion for boats. In the early days of the yard, Altena Yachting mainly built steel motorboats and hulls. However, the focus soon shifted to building luxury motor yachts. Altena Yachting has now built a wide range of yachts in different sizes and styles.

Since the foundation in 1969, Altena Yachting has expanded to an impressive and reliable company, that builds yachts with a distribution all over the world. We build high quality motor yachts in the range from 12 metre till 20 metres and chine as well as multichine. In jubilee year, Altena Yachting trawlers keep coming

RAAMSDONKSVEER – Altena Yachting marks its 50th anniversary year by delivering an aluminum, 15m (50ft) semi-displacement trawler for a repeat client who is downsizing from a 24m (78ft) Altena. And in this jubilee year, it is building an 18.6m (61ft) Vripack-designed Altena OC for delivery in 2020.

Half a century of steel and aluminum yacht building at Altena Yachting has left a significant mark. The family-owned yard has to date built more than 800 vessels. In 1969, founder Gerard Pols – then a diesel engine repairman – started his yard by finishing someone else’s 9.5m cruiser. Soon he was building his own. Ten a year, from 8 to 15m (26-49 ft) a year.

Ah, life was a such breeze then. Boat drawings were simply scaled up a tad, if a client wanted a slightly larger boat. These days, Altena Yachting builds 2 or 3 full-custom yachts a year, with chine or multi-chine hulls. All luxury craft, rated for inland, coastal or white-water yachting.

Altena Yachting is one of two dozen or so Dutch builders making premium quality, under-30m (98ft) luxury cruisers and trawlers. Many Altenas come off the boards of house designer Otto Brinksma who is responsible for the yard’s Blue Water Trawler and Coasthopper. Altena has also relied on designers Pieter Beeldsnijder, Theo Werner and the Vripack studio,

“We build everything, also for other shipyards”, says Altena Yachting Director Marcel Pols. “We are always open for cooperative projects.” A good example: the Vripack-designed  Vryburg PB 61, an all-weather roundbilged yacht that is suited for transatlantic crossings launched in 2018. “We also completed one in 2016,” says Pols.

The 18.6m (61ft) Altena OC (open cockpit) he is building now is a Vripack design. The 46-ton displacement yacht will be powered by twin 220HP John Deere diesels. Altena’s Blue Water Trawlers have been a hit from the day in 1994 when the first was launched. By now, it has sold 40, in lengths from 48 to 58 feet (157 to 190ft). A steel displacement yacht designed for coastal waters and open sea, the Blue Water Trawler has a no-nonsense, classic look, a flared bow and comes in single and double-prop versions.

The boat has 5 watertight compartments, including the engine room, fore and aft ship accommodation. The aft-placed owner’s cabin has an en suite bathroom. Forward are a guest cabin, a dinette, bathroom and toilet and galley. There is a deck house steering position and saloon below the flybridge.

Altena Yachting takes on challenging repair and rebuilding jobs, most notably the transformation of a Dutch fishing cutter into an expedition vessel for the Swish Arctic Project. The San Gottardo ship was given a new wheelhouse, accommodation and a mast with an observation crow’s nest. The ship sails from Spitsbergen.

Altena 61′ open cockpit.

De Altena 61’ OC (open cockpit) is een goed geproportioneerd motorjacht, gecombineerd met traditionele en moderne elementen. De rondspant romp heeft een moderne spiegel, klassieke waaiersteven en een lichte zeeg. Rvs dorades en een scheepsbel op de boeg zorgen voor een mooi klassiek contrast tegenover de moderne vormgeving van het stuurhuis met zijn grote ramen. De brede gangboorden liggen op gelijk niveau met achterdek en voordek, ze zijn omgeven door een robuuste rvs zeereling, wat de veiligheid ten goede komt. Om van het uitzicht te kunnen genieten, heb je de keuze uit de voorkajuit met geïntegreerde bank, vanaf waar je het voordek op kunt, óf de royale spiegelbank in de open kuip. Het zwemplateau is te bereiken via één van de twee trappen in de spiegel.

Betrouwbare technologie

De lazarette is toegankelijk door een grote elektrisch-hydraulisch bedienbare klep, die omhoog wordt gehouden door twee robuuste hydraulische cilinders. Er is een kraantje aanwezig om de fietsen en de bijboot van en aan boord te hijsen. Voor de fietsen is plaats genoeg.

Vanuit deze ruimte is via een kneveldeur de machinekamer te bereiken. Hier is alle techniek goed bereikbaar voor controle en onderhoud. Voor een snelle inspectie is de machinekamer ook te betreden via een luik in de kuipvloer. De machinekamer heeft traanplaat op de vloer en platen, voorzien van gaatjes, tegen de wanden en het plafond. Hier achter is het isolatiemateriaal aangebracht. Er zitten twee John Deere dieselmotoren van 230 pk in met 6 cilinders. Ook zitten er waterafscheiders in voor de twee voortstuwingsmotoren. Het water wordt onder water afgevoerd en alleen de uitlaatgassen verdwijnen via de uitlaat in het achterschip, dit zorgt voor een enorme geluidsreductie. Daarnaast is een brandstofcentrifuge aanwezig, die de brandstof vanuit de tanks laat circuleren. Hierdoor wordt de kans op bacterievorming in de diesel verkleind. Op een paneel in de machinekamer zitten de analoge motorinstrumenten. Het schip is voorzien van een CAN bus systeem, waardoor alles is geïntegreerd in een centraal bedieningssysteem van Yachtcontrol. Dit is bedoeld als back-up, mocht er sprake zijn van een storing in het boordnet. De accu’s, laders en omvormers staan op een koele plek buiten de machinekamer opgesteld.

Met de afstandsbediening van Hydronautica is het schip zelfs van een afstand te besturen. De stuurstand bestaat uit maar liefst drie grote displays. Hier is dan ook zo ongeveer alles op af te lezen en te bedienen, van navigatiegegevens van de Simrad-apparatuur tot de motorgegevens en het boordnet. Verder zit er op het dashboard een gashendel, het stuurwiel en de bedieningen van de hydraulische boeg- en hekschroef.

De Altena 61’ OC heeft met ca. 1400 toeren een mooie kruissnelheid van zo’n 14 km/uur bij een verbruik van 11 liter per uur per motor. Vanaf 1500 toeren gaat het voorschip iets omhoog en neemt ook de hoogte van de hekgolven toe.

Ruim interieur

De Altena 61’ OC heeft een ruim stuurhuis, een grote keuken en twee hutten met eigen badkamer. De salonbank komt uit een meubelzaak en is zo opgenomen in het interieur, dat je niet ziet dat het een losse bank is. De taupekleurige lederen bekleding van het meubel komt dan ook terug in de stuurstoel en de passagiersbank. Het zicht vanuit de luxe stuurstoel is perfect, mede dankzij de fraaie ronde hoekramen vooraan en de lage betimmering. Samen met de eiken vloer en kersen betimmering is er een prettige sfeer gecreëerd. De trap aan bakboord daalt af naar de centraal geplaatste keuken en dinette benedendeks. Hier heb je wat meer privacy. Aan de dinette kan met vier personen gegeten worden. De grote keuken heeft een witte uitvoering, die in de hoekopstelling aan bakboord is geplaatst. De gastenhut heeft alle benodigdheden, namelijk een ruim tweepersoonsbed, goede kastruimte, voldoende lichtinval, ventilatiemogelijkheden en een vluchtluik. In de badkamer is de wand tussen de douchecabine en de gastenhut van melkglas. Dit zorgt voor extra lichtinval.
